ConceptArt.Org is proud to announce our latest contest: Newborn! Let’s get started!

Each moment we sit down at our tablets, we have an opportunity to create a beautiful work of art. We can reach for beauty, depth of idea, technical mastery or even personal satisfaction. We can create in hopes of being discovered. We can focus on found inspiration or a simple desire for prizes and loot. We can draw and paint because we understand the importance of promoting ourselves with work of our own vision. We can make art to hone our abilities for the career road ahead. But, the question is not why we create…it is what will we create? What will you create?

As artists, we all have opportunity to bring something into the world from the deepest places in imagination. You have the ability to bring vision to life with your talent. What will you bring to this world? Will you bring something that entertains? Will you bring something that changes minds? Will you bring something which makes you smile or builds your reputation around the world?

TOPIC:

Newborn “Bring Something Into the World” or “To Life”

ONLY USE REF in ways that the ref cannot be realized by the viewer. If someone says hey that looks the same...then NO you may not use ref like that. The owner of the ref must not even see it if they saw your piece...such is the nature of copyright law. NO SUBSTANTIAL SIMILARITY.

cool?

Ilaekae
June 7th, 2009, 02:45 AM
hunchback, your own shot ref is fine.

Now for the required rant...

Not to sound pissy, but I think it's time everybody learned an extremely simple fucking fact...

You shoot ref, you own it, so nobody gives a flying fuck what you do with it.

You lift somebody else's stuff and pretty much use most of it for ref, you're screwed.

If you use somebody else's shots for some minor details like position of a hand, hairstyle, shadow on a nose, warts, or pair of underwear on a much larger and complicated piece of your own, you're using ref in a legitimate fashion. How damn simple is this, people? It's not g'damn rocket surgery!

Use some common sense. If you want to show the Earth in space, you ARE going to have to use reference of the Earth. Your damn memory is just not that good. You trace Miss July 2001 from Playboy and change her hair color, and present the result as your own creation, you're an idiot so get out of here and get a job as an accountant.

Not sure if I have a chance of winning but I'm joining in on this because it's good pressure to get to the canvas and get better. Whether you win or not, it pushes your skills and gives you a finished piece to show for it, right? Progress ftw; Good luck everyone! ^^

Weee! After brainstorming a bunch of idiotic and clichč ideas I've finally found something to work on :) So I'm in. :D It might still be kind of clichč though...

Is making a thread in here the right way to go get some feedback, or is it better not to show anything before deadline?

I guess people like me would only get better images getting as much C&C as possible, but if it's a bad idea to look like an idiot when asking what the golden curve is when mentioned, I'll refrain :P

Jacob Kobryn
June 7th, 2009, 08:31 PM
My brain is churning but I still don't have many ideas. I'm hoping that this piece will be like my masterpiece: a piece that I feel incredibly satisfied with, presents true emotionality, as well as having a clever/original/important idea. My artwork always lacks in ideation. I want this piece to change that.

Mr. Jason Manley/CA.org

Concerning the newborn contest's strict rules on producing your own original work and not using the likeness of other people, does that extend to objects/tools such as Painter/Wacom tablet?

I wish to include the likeness of these products into my Newborn entry, but i would like to know if such a thing is allowed.

I would assume so as both Wacom and Painter are Promoting/Contributing to the contest.

Ilaekae

Can it be a sculpture?

The rules (#3) state that any media can be used, but I would take into consideration that the companies involved would be using the images for promotional purposes, so a free-standing sculpted piece may not translate well into a 2D image. I definitely could see a flat-on sculpted piece similar to a frieze or bas-relief, or even a shallow "box" piece as being quite acceptable for what they have in mind.

Keep in mind I'm not Jason (I'm cuter...) so he may have another opinion. :P

Likeness of other people? What did I miss? I'm using my grandmother in my picture, photos for ref taken by myself. So there's a likeness of grandma in my picture.

You mean likeness of refs that you have not made yourself, right?

Artwork must be 100% original and your own. It can contain no copyrighted materials or unapproved likenesses owned by others. ARTWORK MUST BE ORIGINAL.

So is this refering to celebrities? I was going to include some popular faces as a sort of cameo in my piece (not copied from a photo). It was gonna show some musical artists watching and wondering as a new decade is born. Is this idea in violation of the rules? (their faces would appear in the reflection of the container that the baby is in.) This is a thumbnail:

:jawdrop:

If only I wasn't depressed. I can't help but think it would be totally mind blowing, if ridiculous, if I managed to do a picture with enough quality and ambition to participate in this. I'm not grandiose to think I have any chance of winning considering my lack of everything and the brutal competition, but if only I was well enough to finish something worth presenting I could at least feel proud for once in my life.

Anyway...

Some questions:

So the idea is to put out our most original vision into the world? It doesn't have to be to literally birth a creature, right?

You say any media, but how will Wacom promote itself if a person uses a mouse or traditional media? Is it really any media?

Ilaekae
June 17th, 2009, 12:52 PM
1. Hell no.

2. Hell yes.

hala
June 17th, 2009, 07:08 PM
I think the any media thing is more or less to afford people who don't have the luxury of already owning a tablet, (but may be just as talented and creative as someone who does) the chance to win a tablet if they can't afford to just buy one---and this contest is also about winning some great spots for publicity of your work--so it's not just geared towards wacom's promotional goals. :)

That's what I think anyway. o.O

good luck!

Jason Manley
June 18th, 2009, 04:01 AM
yeah...im hoping to see a lot of ideas that are not just newborn babies...unless it is just handled that amazingly well...the concept is to BRING SOMETHING INTO THE WORLD...whatever that may be. It could be an image that is socially responsible, pure fine art, illustration...the works...

Be creative!!!

Hey...just wondering, but the rules state to enter the image at 1000 pixels wide, and mentioned that the grand prize winner might be on a cover of Imaginefx.......is there a prefered height ?
Just that i know cover art can be a bit restrictive if its in a wide aspect ratio.

Im not assuming that i will win, although that would be sweeeeeet.....just didnt want to enter something that wont work on a cover...just in case :-0
cheers!

ps: rocking idea for a comp - cheers guys

Great competition. Maybe I even have a real chance ^^

Though I would like to know about the picture height too.
Is it just 1000 pixel x anything you want ?

I will give it a shot. This will get me inspired again and it will be a great chance for me to actually brush up on my skills since I have been slacking way off.

Remember, the 1000px rule only applies to the image you send in as the final image.

So make sure the source material is of higher resolution, in case you do win and they have to put the art on the cover of imagineFX. You can always crop so don't worry, just make it high rez plusminus -3600 x 2400 and up. Once its done rescale it to a smaller resolution image with the max width of 1000 pixels.

Height is realative to the aspect ration of your image I believe, so 1600 high, 1000 wide is fine I think.

You will never get anywhere thinking like that---as long as you try your best and don't defeat yourself, you will be worth something because your effort will speak for itself.

Yes, but if you are still learning to swim, you don't go compete in the Olympics yet.

Tbh, we still haven't gotten any sort of answer regarding the height. I'm guessing it's only effecting the width, and you can go crazy with the height, but I would just like some sort of clarification, since 1000x1000 is infinitely different than 1000x1600, etc.

Sorry to nitpick. D:

Use some common sense. If you want to show the Earth in space, you ARE going to have to use reference of the Earth. Your damn memory is just not that good. You trace Miss July 2001 from Playboy and change her hair color, and present the result as your own creation, you're an idiot so get out of here and get a job as an accountant.

Might as well enter man.

It may be a 1/10000000000000 chance that I'll win this, but that's still a chance, plus it'll improve your skills just working on your entries.

Ima brainstorm too.

Is there a limit to the ammount of entries we can do Jason?

Keeping quality in mind of course.

Registration, means only the registration for the forum, so you can wright an entry ^^. You open your own thread in the contest area, put the final result on the first entry and sent a link and all the infos via email. That should be it.

---

About improving: Even if I sont win, this was already worth it. I am working on my 2nd pic and I already learned sooo much.

A question at the end: What is meant with "presentation" ? Are we supposed to make a frame and WIP all together with text in an overall picture ? Not sure about that.

dierat
June 24th, 2009, 10:21 AM
Create your artwork and submit your final entry in jpeg form at 1000 pixels wide to contest@conceptart.org (include your full name, conceptart.org username, address, and phone number in the email with the entry attached). I'm pretty sure that making a thread for your image is optional. The rules state that you are to attach the image in an e-mail and send it to the stated address. I believe the threads are more for your benefit, so you can receive constructive feedback and make the best image possible. By presentation he probably just means that you took the time to make it look finished and presentable.

I too would like some clarification on the dimensions. My painting is very vertical, and a width of 1000 pixels would make it much too tall to be viewable on any monitor.

Is 1000 pixels tall acceptable (which would make my pic's width a much more manageable 400 pixels)? Or do I just stick with a monstrous 1000 x 2500 pixel image?

Is photoediting allowed?

I belong to a few GFX sites, and my friends want to know if they can enter GFX things.

Obviously not just taking an entry and putting it on a cool background, but say I took, a pair of hands, and a baby, and made it look like they were the hands of god holding the baby or something, would that be okay?

Sorry if I'm not making any sense.

Judging: Judges weigh each entry based on idea development (50 percent) and technique (50 percent). Pretty pictures are nothing without great ideas. Great ideas are better without stellar execution.
Idea Development:
Narrative, idea, story, symbolism, design,
Technique:
Composition, execution, presentation, brushwork/surfacing (or lack thereof), color or value use etc…

With 50% of the judging going to idea development are we supposed to post process pics of our ideas?

Also... is their a stipulation on the need for a hi-rez version of the image (300dpi minimum?) for publication purposes in the event that your image wins etc?

Awesome stuff... I'm hoping I can fit this in.

Kudos for all you do for the community!

Don't know much about paint, but if you have photoshop, or if you know anyone who does, open the big pic in there , then scale it with the "image size" option in the "Image" menu. That should be a clean scale ^_^, remember to save as something different, so you still have the big version if they want it later ^_^

Yeah, I know it's 7 pages long. Yeah, I realize that most of those seven pages consists of posts of "Kewl!," "I'm in," "Is this the bus stop?" and stuff like that, but most of the questions being asked in the later pages have been answered already. Please take a few minutes minutes to read through the original rules on page 1 and flip through the other six pages before asking something. If you don't see your answer or a hint as to what to do, THEN ask.

Hi all , just registered. Quick question / confirmation:

Its says in the rules "include your full name, conceptart.org username, address, and phone number in the email with the entry attached)."

But we also have to include what country / continent we're representing too right? Since there are regional Prizes.

Hang on. I skimmed over the "address" part...sorry lol question answered.

Apparently not until the members choice poll goes up. If you know you sent the email, and it didn't bounce back, then relax. Everybody is going through the same thing.

So just to clarify is it due on July 31st at 11:59pm central time? sorry just a little confused on the exact time we have to submit by

chris bass
July 30th, 2009, 04:24 PM
according to Final submissions are due no later than July 31 2009 (central standard time)

you should be right, but a verification would be welcome.

"So just to clarify is it due on July 31st at 11:59pm central time?"

That timing has been traditional here for as long as I've been here. Some idiots running a challenge (dum de dum dum...ahem...) will stretch it to midnight in American Samoa(?) ...as long as its still July 31st...

I know I probably won't get an official answer in such a short time till eadline but maybe someone has the same problem. I already emailed my submission thinking I won't have any more time to work on it, but it ends up I will have another hour or so and I'd like to keep going on it, is it okay if I email a newer version??

I'm going to anyways I guess, I just hope it doesn't confuse the people who are gonna compile the entries.

Here are a few lines from the first post in this thread:
JUDGING PERIOD:
Judging will take place on the date of August 7th 2009. Peoples Choice judging poll will open on August 1 2009 and will close on August 7 2009.

RULES:
1. Multiple entries per participant are fine.

It looks to me like announcements will be at least a week away and that it is OK to enter more than once. I didn't see a rule that said your entries are not allowed to resemble each other. I'd say you might as well make your newer version, fersteger.

Just submitted both mine. Neither have any sort of chance, but they were fun to do, and with some refinement could maybe fit in a portfolio. :)

Does anyone know if the People's Choice Award is opening on August 31, or the August 1-7 like the Judging section states?

PEOPLES CHOICE AWARD!
The talented ConceptArt.Org Community is awarding a Large Intuos 4 12’x19’ and a copy of Corel Painter 11 by voting in the poll which goes live on August 31 2009 in the contest forums http://conceptart.org/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=158 and a the winner of this award also gains a one year subscription to ImagineFX!

Ok so i am confused. i see a Finals Thread.. but no poll to actually vote for the Peoples Choice..
i see that people are ranking posts in the Finals Thread-- is THAT how we vote for this--there's not like the actual list of people at the top to click on?
and ..as a side thought...if it is how we vote-- why are people ranking things so low? i keep seeing like "3 out of 10" why would you do that if its the one you want to win? wouldn't you give it a 10?

August 3rd, 2009, 02:48 PM
riotorange: I think people are using the ratings to "crit" each image right now. It would be weird if they used that for the community poll, I dont think thats what they're doing.

riotorange
August 3rd, 2009, 02:56 PM
Arenyth Thanks, just wondering is all. i figured the poll just wasnt up yet, but i'm confused because i asked Jason yesterday if we were allowed to rank more than one person in the finals thread and he said "no, only rank one and there's just one people choice" -- so either his poor tired overworked and abused self misunderstood my question, or im just stupid all around. ( im leaning towards me being stupid tho, really lol)

LillyCat
August 3rd, 2009, 04:28 PM
@riotorange- Yeah I was thinking the samething and was lost thinking I missed something ;)

Maybe they are wanting help with what images they are wanting to put in the Peoples Choice vote and seeing what ones people would want to vote for? I am not sure...or just letting everyone see all the works and get a good look to find something they really like and when the vote goes live they have a better idea of each picture and make a choice overall.

Vaejoun
August 3rd, 2009, 05:58 PM
I think they will open a special new Thread somewhere else.
Maybe in the finals forum or so, where everybody sees the thread. And maybe wright emails so that a lot of people are voting.
The final-images thread is a little hidden.... at least that what I think ^^

The judges may choose at first, then those pics are taken out from the poll choice. Would make sense. And maybe they dont bring all pics in the choice.

Cant wait for the results. To my feeling there are around 10 really good pictures so far, but I know that jury-desicions cant be foretold so all I can do is sit and wait for the end.

At least I have a feeling of "might have a chance" right now. Which makes me kind of proud. ^^°

August 3rd, 2009, 06:58 PM
well im sure its just to get everyone all together in one thread so we can look at them...just confused about the rank thing. Not important tho, it'll all eventually make sense.

I checked the rules and there is nothing about this.

The Illustrist
August 7th, 2009, 08:01 PM
I am not too sure about that myself, in fact I was just wondering when we are going to get the competition results..at the beginning of the competition thread, Jason said the judging was taking place yesterday (August 7th) so hopefully they will be up soon! At a guess I would say the results will probably be shown either on the home page or at the top of the forum page above the existing competition thread...hope this helps :)

Yeah, I'm hoping this doesn't get drawn out for a long time... There's still no updates on the 'people's choice' voting poll, let alone the main results. :[ I don't know about anyone else, but I'm getting kind of antsy. X)

Yeah... I am nuts to see what happens..I am glad I am not the only one that has no clue what is going on ATM. ^^ I am sure they are having a hard time picking because there are so many great submissions. I can't imagine all the emails to go over.
