Well this is nothing new but I have to say, New updates on the last page!! I mean everybody say it so... I suppose that people normaly don't read the dates of the posts... up in the left corner on this box you know... older first, newes last... like in a "sketchbook".

Like always any C, C or idea that helps me improving would be very appreciated.

Hola! Wow, these are awesome! I really like the sketch with the 3 guys, some pretty difficult poses which you did a really good job on. The environment drawing is great, I hope you got more where that came from. :)

Please post more!

I'm really enjoying the high level of detail in your sketches! Tell me though, do you do any work with color? It'd be awesome to see.
As for how you can improve, it looks to me that you're at a higher level than I am! I'm afraid there isn't really any problem in your drawings that I can point out. lol

June 13th, 2009, 12:59 PM
Wow, thank you very much guys.

Sometimes I like to make some architectural stuff, is good to practice line work and perspective and I find it funny. I´ll work it more then thanks!

Here is one of my first color sketches with Photoshop, made for the development of a concept for my portfolio, And a couple of pages of graphite sketches.

Hummm... don't look too much to the tower sketch. I've been doing strange things with the perspective...

Here I go buddies! :geekg:
As Dethklaus suggested, here comes an environmental color sketch in photoshop. I tried to make some kind of speed painting but I believe that the 5/6 hours that it took me can't be considered too quick...So no speed painting at all. Something to practice. :yayca:

Hey, Raul. I was impressed by the creature that you posted in the finally finished section, so I thought I'd visit your sketchbook.
You've got some great work in here! Your designs are fun, and your pencil skills are killer. I especially enjoy your environment and architecture sketches. Those are subjects that I find extremely challenging, so I was really impressed with what you achieved.
If I may venture a critique, your digital paintings are kind of a mixed bag. Some, like the creature you posted in the finally finished section, are very nice. Others could use a bit more polish. In some of your paintings, such as the robot in post #8, and the hairy lizard type guy in post #5, you need to push the darks a bit more. That is, your darkest shadows are still too light, and flatten the form. Also, in many of your digital paintings, such as the environment in post #6 and, again, the creature in post #5, the rendering seems a bit blurry and muddled in places. Even in the creature you posted in the finally finished section, which is the most refined piece I've seen from you, there is still this sense of blurriness in spots. You obviously have great skills, and great knowledge of lighting, anatomy, and design, but I think your digital renderings could use a slight bit more polish. Hope you don't mind the critique.
Good work, man. I've subscribed to this thread, so I'll be watching.:)

Hope you don't mind the critique.
Not at all Moai, I'm very grateful for your critique :teeth:. I find very useful and encouraging the constructive comments like yours, and in fact, I need it in order to improve and to make a living with my drawings!

That blurred look in some places of my works keeps me a little worried. I have to make some changes in the way I use the brushes in Photoshop. Also there is some kind of insecurity in that blurred/muddled areas, or it can give that impression... I think. Practicing will be the cure I hope!

I glad you keep an eye on my work! :bounce::bounce:

June 27th, 2009, 04:50 AM
damn it, those enviro and archi are great... you could turn them to unbalievable matte-painting.
tell me is true or false:have you done many many drawings of architecture in your country ?
one suugestion: unless is it your style: can you vary your edges in painting (some hard edges)

waiting for more

Raúl.Arbeloa
June 29th, 2009, 05:43 PM
Hi zou, Thank you :D that's very kind of you. The truth is that all that I have done as environmental or Architectural drawing is on my sketchbooks, I think is not really too much/ enough, but I have practice my line quite hard wile I was studying animation and after.

Thanks for your suggestion I'm working on environments right now, and yes I want to improve the way I use the brushes to avoid that blurred feeling.

Also being quicker would be something great so here I go...:yayca:

Some speed painting, this time faster, about an hour and something ... some minutes.

Still looking blurred... :[

I think I will complete it with something on the foreground

Wow, that painting really has something Epic hanging over it. I really liked it, but i think theres something wrong with the lighting in it, it might be the snow thats not reflecting the sun, hmm I dont know. but there is something about the lighting.
Keep up the good work, Hope to see more from you!:D

Raúl.Arbeloa
July 3rd, 2009, 12:27 PM
Yes Pencil_Mage I think the lights on the snow can be better, some strong white reflections would give a better look. Also I put some kind of pink on the snow that I think doesn't fit at all :geekg:.

But I heve to say that is the second time I try to make snow, and the first time was in B&W...!:blahblah::blahblah: I'm going to practice it a little more I think.

A new one.

Hi there,
I came here to congratulate you for your aweseom envirnment skills. These all look great, though I think something gets lost in the translation form paper to pc.
The other thing I noticed is that your epic enviros need more contrast between background and foreground. More colour perspective etc.

Cheers

I love the expressions that are in your last 3 drawings. I find it very hard to get that same likeness when doing different expressions and angles of the portrait, any tips? as i am also interested in taking an animation class soon.

Raúl.Arbeloa
August 9th, 2009, 09:02 PM
Lapada Thank you very much , I hope you'll like next one too.

Ryoma0z Thanks, I'm nothing but an apprentice regarding to animation but I would say that taking your time to understand the volumes which compose the character is quite important... and then stretch, squash and draw it a thousand times!!
Well it's slightly more complicated than that and requires a lot of practice unless you're a genius. So have patience, persevere and good luck with the classes.:rendered:

Corrath
August 10th, 2009, 07:43 PM
Im really impressed with the variety of textures your able to realistically create, from the fur of that bison rhino beast, to the stone work of your building and the sci fi structure of your future buildings and transports. I wish I could do that!

Mind checking my sketchbook and making some critiques?

Raúl.Arbeloa
August 11th, 2009, 04:20 PM
revenebo thank you partner! Sometimes the best solution is not the first one but I think that's more a part of the process than a mistake :geekg:.
Blue pencils saturates the paper too much for me. I like to take care of the paper, I prefer block in smoothly and rough with a 6H, and then go with the 0'5 HB and 0'3 2H (propelling pencils). Sometimes I start with the 0'5 directly if I have a very clear image in mind.
I only use PS to a final clean up if it is necessary but I like to let as much graphite as I can.

Jordan85 thank you very much! Me too!:tihi:

Katanasoul Nice, thank you! :D Train your mind and eyes while you train your hand. Observing... horizon line, Vanishing points... and practicing. I think that's the way.

Corrath Thank you! I think it is just practicing :geekg:

Your critter and enviro designs are really great, especially those sketches.
If you don't mind the critique, I think some of your paintings needs a little more contrast to them, they feel a little flat in terms of lighting.

Overall, awesome stuff!

Hallo? God my SB is full of cobwebs. My appologies for not responding long time before to these comments guys.
I hope you won't mind if I do it now.

daveneale thank you!. I though you were in Australia, maybe I´m confused with some one else.

Growling yeah thank you man I know, they are lacking more practice. I'm working on that. I have been having much more hours drawing traditional than painting with tablet at the moment. Now I'm trying to reduce that difference, but there will be always something to learn.

Dahami thanks! Being compared with Ralph McQuarrie makes me feel good but it is too soon for that IMHO.

Bushido ¡Gracias hombre! Que bueno que pasaste por aquí. Espero que esa mano se esté curando bien.

Pencil_Mage LOOOL!! NONE... at least in the last few years. I hope you keep working and learning, that sounds great to me. Be pacient and don't forget someday you will have to try some anthomy and other basics.

H+D Thanks! And thank you very much for the crit, I think that's the key I was lacking to achieve depht in my enviros.

Olivier H Thank you very much.

Abrodos Hey thank you! I will.

Kuidf^! Thank you buddy.

paran0id Thank you very much

DStraX Thank you very much, I really appreciate that.

duckfukker Thank you very much for the comments man.

Ghosd Thanks! Usually I draw with propelling pencils 0,5 and sometimes 0,3 for details but it's been some time since I don't use this last one. Recently I have been using a TK 4600 also wich is more similar to a pencil but a little heavier. Not specially expensive tools. For the paper I prefer the softest texture with very small grain, and not very absorbent. If you work with graphite this kind of paper treats you right if you threat it right, but it is not suitable for water color and if you use ink you have to let some time to dry.

These are the pencils. I suppopse you can guess it but I won't mention the manufacturer. There is plenty of good ones around and I think that is not the most important thing. It's just up to you.

This is the tipe of notebook I have been using as big sketchbook and works perfectly to me. Is the same kind without grid you will use for school, college or whatever. More exactly it is 215X310mm optic paper 90 gr (whatever it means...)

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4142/4917760752_e9f25a23c4_z.jpg

And this is the small one I´m using now , from a promotion of a beer label so absolutely for free, but the paper is good.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4097/4917760762_1dc78975cf_z.jpghttp://farm5.static.flickr.com/4115/4917760774_7342e2bc95_z.jpg

Like this another one from a promotion of Rum, paper is not so good but works for sketching.

http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4094/4917760780_3873d8f9e3_z.jpg

So you can always make yourselves a nice present and expend 900 USD in a pen and another 200 USD for a very special a sketchbook but, you don't need it, specially if one of your friends is bartender.

And in my opinion, inspiration comes from everywhere, everything you like and attracts your attention since you are a baby to anything you want to know or need to study, so you take adventage of every single opportunity you have to observe what you consider interesting for your purposes. The single act of observing is a huge part of this job. Then from the need of draw or paint somethig in particular is a question of combining basic elements in your mind, a combining exercise if you like from the library of your memory and the references that probably you will need to look for. Choose those wich better fit to what you intend to do and go draw! But you will need patience and a right understunding of things like perspective to put everything in the right place and that requires study and practising.

I suppose you already resolved how to get that thumbnail in place.

Nightblue Thank you very much, for the moment I prefer mooving forward and make new pieces in color, but for sure I will do something else similar to that one in color.

nyyce Thank you very much, you just have to draw a lot! Well I really hope you still being around to see the next updates. I hope you like them too.

I'm closing my other online sketchbook so first I'm going to move here some of my best old sketches. I think they deserve a chance to continue having some visitors.

Wow ,your enviroment drawing and design skills are quite sharp, im impressed definitely.

Values and painting seem to be harder for you , you are definitely lines person. Do you do little value(colour studies from movies? that could help definitely, also i noticed face proportions are bit off the place and faces are really similar and eyes are quite big, face studies would be what the witch doctore cursed.

anyway, take care over there and don't let those bad voodoos or whatever get you

Nettle_MountainThanks for your comment. Despite I desagree almost totally with your criticism I find quite interesting the points you mention. Curious thing that post #121 is precisely from a french film called "Le pacte des loups" from 2001 don't you think? Very interesting film by the way.

A couple colour studies again and some line work for practicing faces in a funny way, kind of a group of alien faces.

I bet somebody is going to find this first one very familiar...
