Atelier equivalent for graphic design?

Hi, I'm currently looking for a school for a friend of mine that would essentially teach graphic design skills, etc. in the same intensity that an atelier would teach drawing and painting.

I know it sounds complicated but as I know nothing about graphic design I was wondering if there were any small, renowned schools for such a thing, similar to the ateliers in LA and NY.

Preferably in the NY area. Or should my friend really consider going to SVA/big name schools in the city instead?
