Well I guess it's time to start a sketchbook.

Before returning to Canada I had the pleasure of having some art lessons with a good friend of mine, Kevin Llewellyn.

The first thing he had me do was this Caravaggio copy.

The second one is just a little sketch I did the other day of a prehistoric creature with some sort of quills.

Enjoy.

Welcome! :)

The rhino is fantastic. I'm curious what are your art goals? Are you aiming at being a painter?

Welcome! :)

The rhino is fantastic. I'm curious what are your art goals? Are you aiming at being a painter?

This question caught me off guard and I thought I should answer right when I saw it.

It is also a question that I am struggling with right now.

I guess goal 1 is to be able to get what is in my head out to the world in a structured, dynamic, highly rendered way quickly!

I want to understand anatomy and be able to put it into practise designing believable creatures and characters.

The painting is just to be able to learn form and anatomy. When you can paint a little it is a lot easier to get people to sit still in front of you to study, many times naked.

I hope that answers your question. If it doesn't please ask again.

I did this as an acrylic painting and than painted over it in Photoshop. About an hour each.

I wanted to using black and white colored pencils on toned paper to see what it was like. I had never drawn this way and wanted to try it out.

Anyways my wife brought me a pic of her trying on her wedding dress before we got married and wanted me to draw it.

This is what I came up with.

The paper was pastel paper with a big tooth so it was tough to get good detail and contrast.

I also should have made her pose a little dynamic, but I guess you give the client what they ask for.

Anyways, this is what it turned out like.

I like most of the stuff here.
The Caravaggio study is very nice valuewise, especially the muscles on the crucified look very nice and detailed.
The quill creature is also great, but the rhino looks better. Especially the shadow of the horm. Good job there.
The womans portrait looks nice, only the lips bug me, because they look detached. Check out some fotos and study how lips attach to the skin of the face.
The skeletal baby looks cut, but where the hell did he have one of those from? :P
The material on the wedding dress is also very nice and looks silky.
All in all, the only thing to ask from you is more stuff.

Cheers and welcome

Thank you so much for the comments Janos.

I may go back and fix the lips soon.

And more is on the way.

Got some nice work here man, love the renderings :). The paintings are coming along nicely too, I'd just advise that you start paying attention to the edges (thinking of the first portrait in particular). It looks really good and you already have a start with softening the edges, but then you hit the lips, eyes and nose really hard. Rembrandt studies FTW :D. Anyways, keep up the good work.

Hey Lyle,

I really like where this is going....you have some good values on the space explorer only keep in mind that he has quite a number of different materials on his body, but they are all rendered with quite the same value range and brushwork.

I love the animal heads...showing some good design skills..... and the portraits (nice colors!) :sungod:

Keep em coming

cheers

Loving that latest update Lyle.
Small crit.......The hand that is closest (the one on the left of the pic) looks to be smaller than the other, which would be further away. My eye keeps getting drawn to the bigger fingers on the furthest hand. Otherwise it's an awesome design mate.
Keep up the good work my friend.
