View Full Version : Teen Challenge 66: [[Primal God]]
June 3rd, 2009, 05:26 PM
TEEN CHALLENGE 66
Idea by K. Forthun, changed a bit by me.
Anyone ages 13-19 may submit an entry at any time before the deadline. Please host your image on a remote image-hosting site instead of uploading it to the CA server. This makes it much easier to transfer it to the poll thread.
The Topic: A God that is inspired by a certain animal, being or apparition that resembles an animal that holds certain traits. i.e Lion = Pride, courage, determination, strength. Owl = Wisdom, enlightenment, patience. Ofcourse physical 'hints' are a good way to bring your character. Like bits of wolf-fur (clothing?) or feathers.
1. Add a border around your image with your name and the topic, like they do with the other of the week challenges.
2. Please do not use attachment manager, but outside host your image.
3. Mark your final as final
Wednesday June 17th, 2 weeks.
June 3rd, 2009, 05:47 PM

June 3rd, 2009, 07:39 PM

June 4th, 2009, 03:03 AM
Nice topic! ..But wasn't round 65 last round?
June 4th, 2009, 03:45 AM
wish i had PS so i could get my idea across easier than using an A4 page, but i will persevere, i dibs doing turtles :D
June 4th, 2009, 04:02 AM
So if I say something like these Egyptian gods... Like anubis, half jackal and half human.
Hm, Sure thing cuz!
June 4th, 2009, 01:06 PM
this sounds cool.... wouldn't it be TC 66?
oh already said... ah well...
this looks like it'll be fun :)
June 4th, 2009, 05:18 PM
Thanks for the heads up, in my defence, it was late :P.
June 5th, 2009, 05:02 AM
nah is cool :P
my god is going to be an extension of a character i recently designed... ancient god of hunting and ever watching: in a 'modern' context so is now a god of brutal justice after seeing everything, through the act of hunting :)
gonna be so cool... and the fluff relating to the animal is gna be sweet :) will post something less vague when i give a WIP/final...
June 5th, 2009, 09:07 PM
I think I'll be doing this one. :)
June 5th, 2009, 10:23 PM
Great topic, looking forward to the final pieces already! :)
June 6th, 2009, 12:33 AM
Haveing trouble with the arms.. foreshortening and their length >.<
June 6th, 2009, 09:50 AM
30 minutes sketch so far. Time for some ref collecting.
June 6th, 2009, 10:24 AM
Finished my exams yesterday, I'll get straight onto this.
I'm thinking Raven God at the moment, with cloak of feathers etc.
This week's is gonna be fun.
June 6th, 2009, 08:40 PM
for those whom it may concern...
Animal symbolism (http://onespiritx.tripod.com/magick18.htm)
just googled this in case someone needs some ideas. It's just a huge list of animal with some of their traits that you could incorporate into your piece ;)
June 7th, 2009, 01:48 AM
: > This sounds like fun.
Mine I think will be a Hummingbird god, best known for her speed, and something about being a messenger.
EDIT: Decided to go directly to speed and ditch the messenger thing.
EDIT2: Progress Shot. : > ♥
June 7th, 2009, 11:34 AM
Hummingbird based goddess huh?
Unusual idea, but I like it.
Can't wait to see what it turns out like.
June 7th, 2009, 12:34 PM
Corza334: you might want to soften some of the lower part of the dress, too hard and contrasty as of now.
Ronald Liu: Nice speedie, can't wait to see more.
DKHutcheson: Cool stuff. Keep the awesome forehead beak, please! i think it strengthens the silhoette quite a bit.
working on mine at the moment.. gonna spam this thread with these last 2 months as a teen.
June 7th, 2009, 12:39 PM
I am extremely tempted to enter this, it would be the first one I have entered as well! There have already been some really good ideas here :D The question is, will I have time to finish it with exams... I'll give it a go I think :P I have a few ideas circulating in my mind already.
EDIT: Well here is a quick and rather messy sketch of the pose I will be using in my final concept after many thumbnail sketches and poses. I apologise for the awful scanning quality, I am still working out how to get decent scans of sketches :P I wasn't going for accuracy of anatomy in this initail sketch, so ignore the vast amount of anatomy errors! I will be doing the whole piece in traditional media, due to lack of digital software and skills.
I am going for a bird theme, so a Goddess of birds, but I am going more along the lines of birds of paradise.
This is really fun, I will be entering more of these in the future :D can't believe I hadn't done this sooner!
June 8th, 2009, 04:41 PM
Hm, I have quite a lot of ideas, however I kind of failed with my fish one.
My other one is a Phoenix like being -> Reincarnation as the "theme" of it all.
I'm quite getting this one!
That's my WIP so far.
(Wait a sec, this needs to be a PERSON? Whoops, going to give this a twist, heh.)
June 8th, 2009, 09:03 PM
Started heading down another path..
but I think im going to change it again
June 9th, 2009, 05:40 AM
damn birds are popular! I was thinking about doing a parrot goddess. Love the theme for this challenge :D
June 9th, 2009, 08:34 AM
So tempted....to enter.... but test of Macromolecules soon... counts to SABSA.... must study.... must..... study.....
June 9th, 2009, 09:08 AM
Revamp 3 ._.
June 9th, 2009, 11:18 AM
I just hope I have the will power to finish this.
June 9th, 2009, 01:38 PM
June 9th, 2009, 08:53 PM
I'm, kinda new at this nor have i really made a name for myself in the forums yet, so why not start here. i'm 15 years old so i mean i saw teen challenge and i was like hey, i could fit in.
this is my final. can't wait to see the rest. if i did anything wrong please tell me.
wow i left a lot of mistakes.
June 10th, 2009, 03:12 AM
Transitory - nice stuff so far, make sure the antlers get firmed up.
Here's my WIP, yet another messenger goddess. Based on the pronghorn (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pronghorn).
June 10th, 2009, 04:12 AM
NOT MY FINAL!!!
Didn't want to render.. I render too early, so im trying to force myself out of it
June 10th, 2009, 06:32 AM
@corza334- You sure that's all? Not even a little more color? We still have a week, there's plenty of time.
June 10th, 2009, 08:09 PM
My parrot god, god of color and creativity and bless people who she feels are capable of bringing something new into the world. The blessing happens through her egg, which she pours over those are worthy.
June 10th, 2009, 09:23 PM
Yeah I'm going to colour it! Now.. I must think of colours D:
EDIT: Im very happy! I can finally see tinnnny evidence of a uniqueish style that I like in my art! ;-; Can't wait to refine it!
June 10th, 2009, 11:04 PM
Isha, I love it so far. I can't wait to see how it looks finished. ♥
June 10th, 2009, 11:52 PM
omg i wrote a long reply but somehow closed my window... w/e...
took a new direction.
June 11th, 2009, 12:51 AM
Transitory - his/her hips are a little odd, and waist a bit too long.
Isha - wow, very creative and cool. I love it :)
Still working on it...
June 11th, 2009, 02:42 AM
Looking cool guys =]
June 11th, 2009, 07:35 AM
looking sweet guys...
this is THE MURDER!
a primal god of hunting and avenge-ment, animal is the 'crow'...
the crows are everywhere, they watch everything, in ancient time they where used as guides on hunts as they would watch weakened prey, easier to track for a ancient hunter, similar at a murder scene, if there is death, the crows are there... seen as an omen for one who deserved it... not terribly well thought out plan .. but ancient man was like that...
June 11th, 2009, 07:44 AM
Here's my final.
Nice Jerik.. completely different take on a crow god ^_^
June 12th, 2009, 08:47 PM
I havn't done a challenge in such a long time was kinda afraid to post but heres my attempt. The topics awsome couldn't resist to give it a go :yum:
June 12th, 2009, 11:47 PM
I've never done digital painting before, and this is just a rough sketch, got a lot of refining to do first. I'm going for a Sekhmet/Kali-like aggressive maternal thing with a hyena. Hyenas are matriarchal, and it's not uncommon for the females will fight to death only hours after they're born.
I need to reference some zebra skulls and flowers for the background. Anatomy crits are very welcome. Also not quite sure what she should be holding. Right now I just scribbled in some lines for later, I want the main hand to be holding something dangly, just not sure what. Also, I know the elbow is messed up. Need to go in and remove the strange side tumor.
June 13th, 2009, 04:11 AM
ummm a tortoise as u can see, starting to fix up the tortle and then gonna shove the aspects of his godliness onto him, and theres gonna be his human form aswell ;P, even tho technically no one had to incoporate human aspects into any of this....
god of time, growth, and protectionnnnn (shell is protection cbf giving him any armor or that sorrttttt)
June 13th, 2009, 07:40 AM
Been busy on C.O.W, lets see what you guys have come up with....
Awwww, I wanted to do a crow. :(
Meh, I'll just have to see what I can do.
June 14th, 2009, 07:49 AM
"My parrot god, god of color and creativity and bless people who she feels are capable of bringing something new into the world. The blessing happens through her egg, which she pours over those are worthy."
June 14th, 2009, 01:08 PM
only been here a day, but what the hell
here's mine, beginning to take shape
June 14th, 2009, 03:58 PM
This is Aargrith, a Primal God who represents the power and aggression of a tiger. He protects those who care for him, he is a guardian of many people.
June 14th, 2009, 06:02 PM
Alright, I changed for the last time and set myself yet again on the Fish theme!
Well... in the middle (the empty space) might contain a huge fish deity or a mermaid. I still have to think of that one.
50% zoom level
June 15th, 2009, 02:04 AM
update, finished on my turlte part so adding another layer to include godlinessnes and background should only take an hour or so, but yeah :P first real attempt at using photoshop
June 15th, 2009, 04:18 AM
I'm going to do the catfish god of electricity.
June 15th, 2009, 04:56 AM
isha: i'm sorry to say, the lineart was really cool, but the colouring is sorta disappointing
demons_n: i like him, though i think it would be more original if a little less animal and a bit more anthro :P
here is my lineart... http://i86.photobucket.com/albums/k102/kraken543/theMurderLINEARTwip.jpg
didn't want that hard work to go to waste :P i spent like... 30 hours on this piece (teehee)
and here is the final coloured version:
- The Murder -
the murder is a god, the personification of crows, the watch many things, they see murders, dark deeds of the night as well as aid ancient hunters by tracking already wounded or weakened pray.
hope you like it....
June 15th, 2009, 05:19 AM
isha: i'm sorry to say, the lineart was really cool, but the colouring is sorta disappointing
Well then please tell me why :) otherwise i wont learn anything.
June 15th, 2009, 06:15 AM
jerik too right, but yeah first atempt at any true PS painting so trying to keep it easy,
and man ur looks good, specialy now i can tell he wasnt some huge ass birdman as big as a tower, good job mate ur shading is sweet,
and isha i think he was meaning the dull dirt wings and a few other shaby bits but its all good, oh and the backgrounds a fair bit rushed, but i am not one too talk seeing i got lazt once i got past the face on mine hahaaa, still looks sick imo, i shat myself wen i saw ur lines :D
OMG jerik just read that that took 30 hours :O i was struggling so far with 6 hours how the hell can u sit there that long?
June 15th, 2009, 07:39 AM
and sooo heres my final hopefully shrinking it didnt kill it lol :P,
yeah hes fat and rolls from one area to another thru that portal thingo and then grows sum trees and manages time, oh and he has digital wrist watch if u can see it, so much better wen its bigger :P jokes
June 15th, 2009, 07:42 AM
nyehe, yup, 30 hours... irrunno how i managed it... i worked through all the series i had while doing it... (freakazoid, how i met your mother, clone high...)
sorry Isha, i couldn't quite place my finger on it at the time... not so much now...
i think a major factor is your lack of highlights. or at least higher shades, the lines, though being nice, are a bit too dominant in this coloured piece, either darkening the edges works (though not in a piece like this...) so make a new layer over that of the lineart and add shades of brighter colours, particularly to the edges... i'll add later if anything comes to mind...
June 15th, 2009, 07:54 AM
if any of the admins read this, i reckon we need a badge like the Chows and cows, so i reckon that next should not just include our main work ie primal god (themes), but also should place at the same time a thumbnail for the badge, like they had in the other threads, if u get my drift, Big painting, then ur prefered thumbnail for TC, yeah idk either :O
June 15th, 2009, 12:02 PM
Thanks for the critique both of you! I tried fixing some of the things mentioned, and I've gotta admit it sure helped a lot. Also ended up working more on the wings.
June 15th, 2009, 03:30 PM
Isha, I love the description and the final piece. She does remind me a lot of a parrot, and a lot of an aztec goddess actually. The only thing I'd really crit on is her calf, it seems deflated.
Jerik, all those details! And your linework is fantastic. It looks great except, my eyes don't want to rest on your character at all. I'm distracted by your background. Compared to it, your character doesn't stand out at all, color or value wise.
Demons_Nightmare, love his watches. Yours does a great job of conveying all three of his purposes. And I love that monocle, gives him a lot of character.
I'm almost sick of mine. I wish I had thought more about the composition before I started. x D
The Hummingbird Goddess
Her chief responsibility is to spread seeds and hurry the arrival of spring. She is enemy to anyone who disrupts the harmony of nature or ruins her flowers and plants.
June 15th, 2009, 06:14 PM
DKHutcheson - awesome :D
isha - Really like that shiny on the feathers.
demons_nightmare - not a fan of the watches I find them out of place even if I do get the symbolism behind it. :/
jerik - whoah the lineart is friggin awesome. Even though the coloring job is not bad I still like your lines more. I find the building on our left to be distracting. Maybe you should crop it out? :S
Cervus is the primal god of life. Guardian of nature and protector of the living. He nurtures the creatures of the forest and is believed to bring prosperity and love to all those who follow his teachings. Although his true form is unclear to mortals some say he can take the form of a stag or a tree. Witnesses also recall a blinding halo around the stag or tree that blinded them before dissapearing completely.
According to ancient lore, Cervus has a twin brother, Heorot (not pictured). He is the deer god of deceit and suffering. He embodies all the sins of man and flourishes in the cruelty that human civilization exerces on his brother's creatures. It is said that the stag brothers share the same heart and are therefore bound to each other for eternity. They are often depicted strolling side by side in a forest.
About his design: I shrinked the waist length a bit but I still wanted an ellongated feel since I wanted him humanoid but not too human looking proportion wise. I like the fact that one of you got his sexuality confused because that's what I was going for. I wanted to convey a certain feminity found in the deer into the god while keeping a masculine top. And the sketchiness of it is due to my lack of motivation and experience with digital painting. :D
June 15th, 2009, 07:25 PM
Catfish god of electricity, rough.
June 15th, 2009, 08:22 PM
Man too bad I just discovered this, or I would have entered. I dont feel like throwing something together before the deadline, so I'll just have to enter the next teen challenge. (which hopefully will have an equally cool topic...)
Just some quick comments:
DK- awesome concept, very original. I love all the textures you created and the colors are really brilliant.
Jerik- Holy crap great job! The armor design is awesome, especially the beak shaped helm and shoulder thingy. And that city, wow it really shows how much work you put into it!
Good luck everyone!
June 15th, 2009, 10:38 PM
Catfish god of electricity, final.
June 16th, 2009, 01:02 AM
Dforman- great concept :D, and great brush, but man imo u should keep going at it coz it still to me looks too much like ur rough WIP,
Corza- interested to see wat the final comes out as, still not very clear and light and colour is not very well defined, need to get the crow aspect across to me besides just wings, only reason i know its a crow god is coz it says it, but yeah refine it and i will likey :D
Omerta- man this is epic, showed my VA teacher and she was amazed out how u used ur brushes, colours epic and i am guessing its a rhino god :D its great man, love it, cant wait for the finished product,
Fawn- nice concept, finished product should be sweet, only crit is the arms wich u probs already fixed, too flopy specially the right arm, tricep is generally bigger at the top, and the deltoid (shoulder) is quite wimpy, draw over it amd just rough the bone structure in it to get an idea of muscles, sides that should be sick :D
HarryAllard- nice idea on the tiger, u need to define a light source, urs is apparently from behind yet the sword and body all have teh lightsource situated on the left, and the face is way too flat man (or is he a pug? joking,) also anatomy, right arm is too long in comparison to the left, the left arms humerus is too short or the right ones too long,.. also need to check up on muscle composition, if my pecs were that far down my chest i would be a granny and very square torso, but yeah had to get out my anatomy book for that, and to think i study that in bio, pdh and art... spend more time on it, play around,
Mtijn - looking good love the fishies atm, cant wait to see the finished piece,
Jerik- wat can i say urs is epicly good, no offence i almost called u jerk coz u killed me lol. sides that no crits sides the character being too small compared to the scene and wishin u hadnt cut off his left foot lol, but then again to get the message of the god across u need that side of the image, i like it alot man, and ur definately determined 30 hours ur my idol hahahaa , or are u :perv:
Demons_n- u have the gayest name ever made and u got too lazy at ur pic, next time concentrate on lightsource and finish it properly, ur pathetic i spit on u :ilaekae:
Dk- thnx heaps, love urs too, no anatomy crits, no colouring crits really, but as u said u got sick like me and rushed the background sort of, like mine ;) hahaa but we will get better
Isha- looks great, good to see u took the advice, coz brightness helps a parrot :D, only crit is the leg we can see but who cares coz i dont its happy :blahblah:
Transitory- i dont like my watches much either, not a fan of metal, and that was my first atempt at photoshop 7 played around b4 but not serious so got extremely annoyed after i had done the turtle part so rushed he rest abit (shouldnt have said that but who cares i know i dont,). looked at ur sketchbook, and thats very good saw one witha wip and frisbeee that was epic, crits on ur god, cheekbones inconsistent disappears on the left side of the face, hips are too square ie didnt have a smooth transition from waist, sides that and not knowing how long u spent all i can say is its good and gets ur idea across.... and not a fan of the flower in the hands, for a focal point needed more detail :D but ur anime style is awesome if u had done that more in this i would say ur a champion ;D
i think thats all sides ppl on page 1. but yeah hope i wasnt too harsh could have been a hell lot harsher, but then taht would be destructive not constructive, also wouldnt mind knowig how long most ppl took i took bout 10≤ hours over a week to do mine, sides that hope everyones good, and cant wait for next round, now i have some experience
June 16th, 2009, 02:56 AM
Thanks for that, I'll work on it today
June 16th, 2009, 11:29 AM
Demons_Nightmare-Wow your teachers said that :^^: im pretty idiotic when it comes to digital painting haha. But ya its a rhino god or somethin got bored with it not sure if im going to use that one this one or make a new one.
What do you guys think work on the old one more or do you guys like this one better?
June 16th, 2009, 03:05 PM
Final. It's inspired by the Boar, which supposedly personifies the "Warrior's Spirit."
I know I've already had my ass handed to me, but what are you gonna do. Could always use the exercise, right?
June 16th, 2009, 03:18 PM
tried to follow everything demons_n suggested, but i'm out of time, so here's my final:
June 17th, 2009, 12:04 AM
Final entry was really fun and learned alot.
Primal god of mountain goat, Puetrace is what the tribal villagers call him. He lives deep within the mountains caverns. Dread locks from aged time dangle to his shoulders as they blow in the wind. He is the ruler of life and death, on the mountain tundra.
June 17th, 2009, 07:35 AM
here is the final alternative... Dependant on what the man upstairs decides... either can be chosen... this ones less magnificent
whats your animal omerta?
June 17th, 2009, 08:13 AM
Jerik your piece is just amazing, although your DA full version is better ;)
really dig the background, and the armor is really cool too,
You get my vote :)
June 17th, 2009, 02:29 PM
Wow, everyone's primal gods are looking amazing :D I couldn't finish mine in time, but nevermind! Good luck everyone, this is going to be a tough one!
June 17th, 2009, 03:37 PM
aww no, i lost track of time, i wanted to enter this for a first one. ah well i will do the next one, good luck everybody they are all looking wonderfull
June 17th, 2009, 09:56 PM
Final Spider Goddess
a la bapsi
June 18th, 2009, 02:16 AM
jerik: well done piece, though i don't really see how this character's a primal god.
explanation? /is an idiot
June 18th, 2009, 03:57 AM
hunchback just owned everyone.
June 18th, 2009, 04:16 AM
hunchback just owned everyone.
not necessarily, wen u think about it how do u know thats a god via the pic? u dont, or get any sense of a spider, unless ur taking a metaphorical side of one, no offence hunchback, ur good at ur art better than me by far,
June 18th, 2009, 06:57 AM
jerik: well done piece, though i don't really see how this character's a primal god.
explanation? /is an idiot
well... this is a more modern version of him (read the previous page of posts...)
the murder is the god, a personification of crows, a god of hunting for ancient man as crows lead the way, as well as a god of retribution, feeding on the corpses of the deserving dead...
June 18th, 2009, 07:48 AM
really sorry about the double post but for some retarded reason, i couldn't edit my last one :<
i only just realised that me and nightmare are really seeing eye to eye
i'm sad to say, but due to the gift of hindsight: hunchback is very likely to win here... though yes, if you think about it he isn't really totally to the theme of primal god
he has a pretty picture... thats about it... and this is seriously looking far too alike to the gladiator challenge, wherein the prettiest picture was the winner with no evidence of thought behind it, and therefore no concept.
it's really nicely done... but yeah... not great, though inevitability dictates that hunchback is really likely to win :/
(oh.. and just to say... i really believe in 'make the TC badge' plan)
June 18th, 2009, 11:05 AM
Yeah it is a vague picture : /
haha i didnt get a chance to work on it most of the time so i ended up just doing the entire thing yesterday in about three hours. But i do agree we should pic someone who was closer to the brief, that is what its all about. But whhoooooo to pic..
June 18th, 2009, 10:57 PM
Either way, the painting is gorgeous. And ultimately, however cool your concept is, the better rendered piece is going to look more professional and therefore be preferred by a client-- if any of us ever lands an awesome job as an actual artist. : )
Ultimately, winning this shouldn't matter that much. The point of these challenges is to improve your skills, get critique and show off a little. Besides, don't count your chickens before they hatch.
Due to finals I just didn't have the time to paint this. We're out now so I'll finish mine for practice and post it in a sketchbook thread.
Omerta -- I liked your rhino god better, I felt that it fit the theme more. Your goat is beautifully rendered, but seems more demonic than primal.
Isha's is probably my favorite, in terms of both being finished and fitting the theme. I do like Hunchback's though, and I feel that the atmosphere of the picture actually is very on topic. The catfish god was interesting, and I liked that the technique made it look somewhat staticy, but I felt it could be more polished.
June 19th, 2009, 04:11 AM
Heres my final! xD again.
EDIT: :P I lied
June 19th, 2009, 05:01 AM
this is true... i realise the point is to up our skills... 'winning' doesn't really have a point without badges too :P
June 19th, 2009, 08:18 AM
some ppl dont understand the meaning of 'concept' in concept art :P
oh AND HURRY UP AND TAKE THIS TOO POLLS, i am really sick of loging in here and seeing the same thread i want a new one
June 19th, 2009, 08:20 AM
And some people don't get the meaning of 'art' in 'concept art' I guess.
It's an important factor, and should be equally acknowledged to the concept part...
If it wasn't, a written description would suffice as a concept.
June 19th, 2009, 08:25 AM
lol but its the prefix that determines wat form the art takes, writing is an art form so technically writing a description would suffice for the topic, its the broader range of the actual business and digital art medium that makes our drawing the viable and only acceptable submission form, everyones art work here is on topic to a point, its just if u look at past challenges ppl have won due to a pretty picture instead of getting the topic or 'concept' across, thats y me and jerik crited (creativly not demeaningly) hunchbacks submission, also because i was scared heheee, but yeah goes to show the better u are at ur art form the more ppl are gonna like it, therefore the more ppl r gonna vote for u
June 19th, 2009, 09:38 AM
Hunchbacks is just an all round stronger piece.. it deserves the vote..
He got the metaphorical sense of a spider down.. it reminds me of a spider. I guess it just comes down to if you like his concept or not, and it might just be a coincidence that you and jerik both don't.. I dunno =}
Not worth arguing over though! Just enjoy the comp :P
June 19th, 2009, 04:47 PM
I'm kinda disappointed in myself that I didn't get to finish it in time. I'll finish it no matter what, however I'm afraid I missed out this comp T.T
