SUPER Stylised Challenge - June 2009 - Amazon Woman Warrior

Welcome to the 31st SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread. This month we're basking in the sun and going for a rather hot and sweaty subject: Amazon Warrior Women! We've been advised that we've been choosing lots of male dominating subjects till now, so here we go with a female subject for all those out there itching to stylise some femal characters! Enjoy everyone!

IMPORTANT: By entering this challenge you give 3DTotal.com Ltd. permissions to reproduce the submitted material in 2DArtist Magazine and all subsequent editions of the Work (by which we mean 2DArtist), its ancillaries, and other derivative works, in any form or medium, whether now known or hereafter developed, in all languages, for distribution throughout the world. 3DTotal.com Ltd will credit each artist accordingly, providing they email lynette@3dtotal.com with their full name, conceptart.org name, email address and website (if applicable).

Please always create new and original artwork in order to avoid any issues with copyrights. If you're unsure as to whether your work infringes any copyrights, please don't hesitate to contact lynette@3dtotal.com for advice.

IMPORTANT: Make it original!!!! Make this Amazon your own; something of your own creation that you can claim the credit for. Good luck - & enjoy!

So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!

Please aim to create your final images, and save your WIPS, at resolutions of around 2000 pixels upwards, to ensure that when you images are published they are high quality. Any screebshots are understandably going to be screen resolution (72dpi), so simply capture those as large as you can when saving out your WIP stages.

There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT+1.00 (BST: http://www.britishsummertime.co.uk/). A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.

For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 30th June 11:59PM GMT+1.00 (BST: http://www.britishsummertime.co.uk/) - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th July 2009. Voting will take place from the 8th July to the 15th July 2009, when the winners will be announced!

We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!

[B]Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (310th June 11:59PM GMT+1.00 (BST: http://www.britishsummertime.co.uk/)), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!

Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!

Amazon
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia:
The Amazons are a nation of all-female warriors in Classical and Greek mythology. Herodotus placed them in a region bordering Scythia in Sarmatia (modern territory of Ukraine). Other historiographers place them in Asia Minor or Libya. Notable queens of the Amazons are Penthesilea, who participated in the Trojan War, and her sister Hippolyta, whose magical girdle was the object of one of the labours of Hercules. Amazonian raiders were often depicted in battle with Greek warriors in amazonomachies in classical art. The Amazons become associated with various historical peoples throughout the Roman Empire period and Late Antiquity. In Roman era historiography, there are various accounts of Amazon raids in Asia Minor. From the Early Modern period, their name has become a term for woman warriors in general."

so i have complete creativity yes? like it can be a futuristic if willing? Sure! Just make sure we can clearly see the subject - i.e. Amazon Warrior Woman - in your final submission, and you'll be good.:) Creativity is always encouraged!

Thanks Murdokx for kicking off the WIP, looking forward to everyone elses starting points. Best of luck to all, and happy scribbling! :)

MurdokX very well this drawing, I like the design of the girl and environment
With my drawing just wanted to teach the idea of T-Rex eating the boyfriend of the Amazon, I know it is my drawing disproportionate, is a drawing a quick sketch:)

Just a quick note:

As the top 10 submissions are to go in 2DArtist Magazine, let's keep nudity to a minimum, please. I know that women have boobs, and as this is a stylised challenge you'll be wanting to no doubt make use of these elements, but let's keep it clean and remember that these images may be seen by kids. So keep it clean, guys!! ;)

Please note that I will reserve the right to not publish any images which I deem to be too risky on the nudity front, so if you're unsure of your concept give me a shout and I'll be happy to let you know if I think it could be a problem. The quickest way to reach me as always is at lynette@3dtotal.com :)

Thanks for your understanding everyone. Hopefully you'll see that this makes the challenge more interesting - and of course, more of a challenge ;)

http://www.whoosh.org/issue12/ruffel3.html - found this website on a search, lists all the names of the Amazons and what their names mean...it's quite interesting and gave me some ideas...one made me laugh though:

Deinomache
[33] Deinomache was an Amazon in the Attic War. Her name means, "Terrible Warrior." -

Before we all get obsessed with boobalicious amazons, it's worth noting that Amazon women often hacked off one of their own breasts in order to make them better archers. At least i think they did, I read it somewhere i think, or I may have dreamt it.

This is an old picture i did along the lines of....

pipmonkey: You're right about the amazon women hacking off a breast. It is a true fact or so I've heard.

Think I may give this challenge ago, got caught up so couldn't finish the last one. I've got some thumbnails done for this already. Will post again soon!

Gavage
June 10th, 2009, 06:35 AM
Cool idea. Remember hearing about the breast-removal/archery thing before...

I'm interested in giving this a go. One thing - 'super stylised' - does that mean I should be aiming for something in particular? Like a very stylised figure... or is it just the name of the challenges? (Just realised how ridiculous this question sounds after writing it down, haha.)

I guess I'm just asking if there's anything I should know before starting but I'd probably be better off having a bash at it and posting the WIPs in the hope somebody will tell me if I'm doing it right or wrong.

PS. Guessing blood/violence is a bit of a no-no if nudity is too?

Don't think it matters too much. There was a Centaur challenge where some of the better entries had bodies from animals other than a horse. I think there was a Giraffe, a Lion and an Elephant. Basically you can interpret these challlenges as you see fit. So long as it's imaginative and fun it's always received well here.

Hey, just a bit of feedback.

MurdokX - really like her face, and the scene she inhabits. My only concern is that her hair seems a bit static, and her bikini bottom seems to hang a little low, or looks cumbersome.

loztvampir3 - I like where you're heading with this sketch so far!

Antarctican - Very nice! I like her expression, along with the blue hippo she leans against. Maybe add a small touch that explains the uncertainty of her "friend"?

Macaruba - I would say old and ugly. I know that may not be as much fun as a sexy temptress - but if you want to take a different angle on the theme, it would be interesting to see an old amazon woman perhaps telling stories of when she was young to up and coming amazonians ;)

Tipa - I like the style utilized here. The warrior looks good so far, but I'm having a bit of trouble with the legs and head of the animal. The lower legs look like they aren't strong enough to support, while the upper aren't long enough. The head should be bigger, and perhaps a tad more fierce.

MurdokX
June 13th, 2009, 11:08 PM
Artiphats - dynamic composition with some perspective! the right leg/foot seems wonky, based on the perspective it should face the viewer a bit.
Pipmonkey - i really love the cropping and the character's expression, cannot wait for it to be colored!
Macaruba - nice exploration
tipa- great sketch so far, strong composition
Dreygus- thanks for the critique, I did not notice the hair! thanks the old hair reminded me of that lady who plays Lela in futurama!

I might call this done, although in a few days I might do some small fixes.

Originally thought of a guy in this piece, but since the theme is female, I figured there would be plenty of ladies at the work-place who would like to unleash a bit of the amazon warrior.

In this, you can see my sketch beneath, and my trace lines drawn with tablet in photoshop. I'll do the coloring next.

Dreygus
June 16th, 2009, 06:23 PM
Hi Pipmonkey - nice to see a watercolor! I've dabbled a bit in watercolor, and know that it can be tough to get the color to go where you want. I'd say this looks very good. Have you ever tried mixing mediums? Say, watercolor and ink? I bet watercolor with more definition to the image in ink would really sharpen things up. But I like it. Nice work!

Here's an update on mine, shading and background should be next and I think last steps :)

Dreygus
June 17th, 2009, 08:41 PM
Here's step two and three...I'll probably have a couple more phases to go through on this before I'm satisfied. You can see here how I've enlarged the monitor (felt the old was too small), and added color, as well as a bit of defining to the plants. I plan to continue doing more shading, as well as playing with focus and motion to portray the figure leaping up out of her chair, and onto her desk. I also like the idea of her tearing her clothing - as a way to illustrate her frustration with her meaningless work and desire to get back to the elements :)

Dreygus
June 17th, 2009, 08:47 PM
Hey, what a difference your linework and colors make! It's really made this piece come alive, and I can't wait to see what you do with shading. Do you plan to add a background? I also very much like the snake, but am torn between the humorous expression it has, and the danger she is obviously in. I'm wondering if there's a way to make it more menacing, without losing the humorous aspect? Perhaps open it's mouth up and show some fangs poised over her, but then it's eyes are dizzy as she prepares for the kill. Also, her top looks like it'd have a hard time staying in place. Maybe an extra couple of small chains would stabilize it.

artiphats
June 17th, 2009, 10:38 PM
Dreygus thanks for taking the time to comment :) Right now I have started shading, i am actually trying a new style where I keep the cartoon-style outlines but shade the colors to give depth. As for the background, I have sketched out a couple ideas on paper but right now it's a 50/50 chance - I'll decide if a background is going in after the charcters are done.

My original goal was to make sure there was a bit of comedy in the piece, and make it more cartoony then my last "robot" piece, so we have the snake wrapped around the amazon but ironically she is single handedly squeezing the life out of it. I realize now that maybe I could have done without the dagger to tell the story here, but I'm a sucker for weapons. Besides what would an amazon warrior be without a weapon of some sort? ;) I tried adding fangs on the snake in the drawing stage, but I ended up taking them out because I realized they changed the action in the story. The emphasis is supposed to be on her choking the snake, not the snake trying to bite her. Again, probably should have ditched the dagger, but I'll take it as a lesson learned.

Hopefully on future pieces I'll have more time to think the concept through a bit more, I honestly went with my first idea this time, so I hope that doesn't hurt me too much.

I'll get some comments posted for all the artists who have posted so far, in the next few days. I love what I'm seeing so far!

EDIT: Here is the shaded artwork, still playing with the idea of a background, not sure if I want to add one yet. Feedback is always welcome.

EDIT 2: Ground and background color added, I think it looks better in this last step but let me know if you think otherwise, thanks guys (and ladies :) )

Artiphats- I am not sure a background is needed for this lovely amazonian woman....but I would definitely add something around her feet just to ground her...some rocks or shrubberies.

Here's my last two steps, and then my final (with more motion added)

Had a lot of fun with this - especially the combining of a jungle theme with the modern office. Probably the hardest part was conveying the sense of her jumping out of the chair and onto the desk.

good round again.

btsk, love the clean coloring style and the dynamic, well done!

MurdokX, it's a nice little scene and i like the Inca-Maya feel to it. i't recheck her hips and the way the panties sit on top of the form though, it's all a little wide it seems.

pipmonkey, i like your last sketch best, however, it would be great if you put in something that also says "Fighter" in there.

Macaruba, i think the gesture at the top in the middle looks very promising, has something stealthy about it. look forward to see you pick!

Tommoy, you're doing great man. cool to see something with a franco-belgian touch, you're getting quite a bit of range in your work(thinking about the last CHOW...). cool stuff!

DIMAGYAN, cool costume ideas, very classic greco-roman influences, and also like the girls! i think i'd go for B as well actually.

that's all i can do for today, keep them coming guys :)

here's my 3 sketches, all pencil except the last one, digital.

hope you like:

Thanks a lot, Jpedro! Tough decision you have there, I prefer your third sketch, but I think that´s a matter of tastes, since all three of them are different aproaches to the subject.

Lots of good images pictures this month, hope to have time to comment.

I’ve done so many sketches and thumbnails for this. Finally got a sketch I like.

704085

Needs some work yet! I've got the developed version in progress, which I’ll post when
finished.
Some really nice pieces from everyone so far :)

jpedro: Lovely sketches as always. It’s hard to pick a favourite as they’re all very different. I think the girl on the left with the sword is my favourite, though I like the expression on the centre one and the little one is cute!

bstsk: Great pose and expression! It’s very dynamic. I really like the foreshortening.

Grandmassa Mr Spect: Just noticed you've posted a step by step of your design and the final version is at the end! I like the dark, textured look to your piece, and her expression is pretty funny. I'm not sure about the comic speech bubble, but i guess it sort of works with the effect you're going for!

Dreygus: Interesting combination! I her pencil nose jewellery hehe!

freddydark: Nice scene you’ve got developing. I like the two amazons fighting

artiphats: I really like yours! The linework is great and it’s got a nice clean and colourful finish.

rosatron: Great concept! I love how you’ve incorporated the amazon warrior with amazon! It’s funny :) I like you’re style too. What do you use to colour your art?

pipmonkey: I like her expression and pose. Very exaggerated proportions you have, though I think the waist may be a bit small!

GRMC: Nice work in progress. I like the pose with the bow and arrow which your developing.

DIMAGYAN: Out of all your sketches which were great, I like B the best though I really like the C’s costume. I also like A’s face.

Tommoy: I love your first sketch! It’s really funny and full of action. Your second one is good too but it doesn’t have the same life as the first one.

MurdokX: Great Scene. I love the body design detail on your amazon warrior.

Macaruba: Nice sketches! My favourite is the bottom centre, the sort of tribal woman. She has a good pose and the design looks interesting.

Tipa: Good start! I like the exaggerated proportions on both the amazon and her steed.

The Antarctican: Cute sketch :D Nice character designs!

Albertocubatas: Liked your first sketch the best!

If I left anyone out I apologise!

updated my attachment above, thanks for all the feedback, it is greatly appreciated.

blackcherry - I hope you finish it, I like that sketch a lot. I know it's an early stage, but one thing to note is that that animal looks more asleep then dead. Maybe open his mouth a little to show that he is lifeless, or maybe even turn him upside down, on his back or side? Either way, I like the idea you have here.

jpedro - so much character there, especially in the first two. It's a close call but I think I like the middle one the best. Hope to see one of them finished.

bstsk - great sense of movement and action, love the expression. Small crit would be that hand in front, I couldn't quite put my finger on it, but I think it looks a little masculine. Especially that index finger. The middle finger is a bit more rounded and I think works better on a female, the index is a bit more square. It's a small thing, but I think it stands out to me because that hand is literally right there coming at us in the center of the image. Other than that, I love the entry.

Grandmassa Mr. Spect - That's a crazy step by step you have there. Amazing how you started from a bit of chaos and actually ended up with an image that has some great texture and pretty strong value and form. I think the problem here, however, is that I just know there is a story behind this but I can't tell what it is. Why is she holding a bowl of noodles and chopsticks? What is she looking up at, that has her baffled? Why is she wearing bunny ears? There seems to be something hilarious behind it all, but at the moment the story is hard to read.

Dreygus - I've been following your steps since your first outline and I love where you ended up. A great take on the topic, I think it takes just a bit of wit to make the connection of "amazon" just waiting to break out of the daily office routine, but that's not a bad thing. This is what I would call "smart art" and I like it a lot. You also didn't go overboard with the motion blur, where many others would have, so good job there as well.

freddydark - whoa that's an ambitious piece! I REALLY hope you finish it out, it's a great idea, lot's of action, your anatomy looks good, and even the background draws my attention in just enough, without taking away from the main characters.

rosatron - As I said earlier yours kicks ass. Love the colors, the piece is fun and funny. As mentioned by others it's a smart take on the topic. Good work sir!

pipmonkey - much respect to anyone who goes balls out with watercolors! Your anatomy needs some work, but the style is there and I like the rhino. She looks pissed, she's not wearing much, and she's skinny as hell! Did you base her off of Janice Dickenson? Just kidding, LOL. Oh, I liked your second sketch at the top of this page too!

GRMC - She already looks like a big tall amazon. The upper body is pretty strong, love the pose and the bow and arrow. I think the legs need a bit of tweaking though. Something about her lower half looks a little off, maybe it's just me.

Dimagyan - great thumbs, I like Warrior A2 and B1 the most. Hope to see some follow up steps, even if you end up doing a different one for the final. Post more :)

Tommoy - I like the style of the first one. The giants are great, and the action is funny. Much more "stylized" than the second one. I would just redraw it making sure everything reads a little clearer and looks cleaner. The second one is good, but it just reads as a nice character design, not much more.

MurdokX - Hell yeah! great painterly style. Love the background and the girl. Great tribal designs and weapon, I only wish she was doing something a little more dynamic. When I think "amazon" I don't think innocent, and she looks a little "green". But maybe that's it, she's a little young and not fully an amazon warrior yet? not sure, but there is a lot to like here.

Tipa - yours could be really funny with the right background, and a bit more refining. Are you still working on it? I hope to see more!

Macaruba - Go old, go old!! It would be a great take and different from the rest of us. Post more!

The Antarctican - great character, Hope to see you at the end cause I know you won't dissapoint!

lotsvamir3 - I see a lot of potential there, it's initially a little hard to make out from the small grayscale sketch, but I can make out enough to see that a finished piece would have some good action in it, and looks like good composition so far.

albertocubatas - still working on those? I like the first one the best, just cover up those huge melons she has there, use a little reference for your anatomy, and go for it!

I think that's everyone so far, if I missed you I'll catch you before the end!

Thanks :) Yeah I noticed the problems with the animal. I'm not going to alter the pose now cos I'll have to redraw but I was thinking maybe a bit of blood coming from the mouth? or something like that. I'll experiment when I start on the colouring.

Also, I really like the background you've added to your design, it works really well! It's got enough detail to be interesting and attractive without taking the focus away from your amazon woman. Great piece!

DIMAGYAN - gorgeous lines, man. I really like the three you have at the top.

bstsk - you seriously rock =) awesome pose, perspective and STYLIZATION! I'd tilt the whole thing somehow to give it some more dynamism, maybe give the background some feeling of speedy motion...but it's really awesome.

jpedro - cool sketches. The little one is so cute =) The other two are really nice characters, but their poses are kinda all over the place - each part of the body going a different direction. I think if you unified it a little, let the whole body (or most of it at least) flow along one motion line, it'd make a stronger pose.

This is very close to finished, so I'll post the final soon.

@ilovelso:Nice setting and cool outfit, but watch your anatomy;)
@macaruba: I would chose the old one. Looks interesting and different (in a good way)
@bstsk: Looks good so far. Backround reminds me a bit of Disney's Tarzan...:P
@pipmonkey: It's not easy to work with watercolors and it's hard to get some "clean" shapes. This could need more work, maybe try a different paper and use a bit more water. Just keep practicing!:)

Sry, can't write something for everyone now, maybe later.

Love it, Jpedro,I liked more your third sketch =(, but this is coming along quite well.
Freddy, I like it a lot, the amount of work you´ve left is huge... very ambitious, hope you finish it. The stone ring could be a little bigger.
I translate now for him in spanish:

Freddy, me encanta, el curro que le queda es gigantesco sin embargo, espero que lo termines, la unica critica que se me ocurre es que el circulo de piedras, o ring, podría ser mas grande. Un abrazo!

What a great collection of work from everyone. Looks like another month of great imagination and skill.

Pipmonkey I like the very extreme nature of your design, reminds me of some 70's character designs - but I must admit I prefered your second illustration with the Amazonian 'over shoulder' look.

FreddyDark What can I say; you have a wonderful ability of using all the space available and filling it with great design and action. Often feels like a 'snapshot' from a scene in a film. It's great! Your colour palette seems heavy on the purple, but I guess that's your particular style. Anyways while most undertake the challenge of just the one Amazonian you go for six! Incredible dedication to your concepts.

DIMAGYAN Awesome style! Great anatomy and yet strangely stylized also. Wonderful work. All the sketches are pleasant but I favour the third one (far right) for overall look and functionality. Really can't wait for some colour. She's just such a cute looking individual. Great hair too! Reminds me of Ally Sheedy from the Breakfast Club!

GunTrouverYou had a lot of good sketches there. Interesting to see your progress. You final image is actually kind of fun with the head being dragged along :D (not sure why but your style reminds me of Duckman -remember that:D)

Macaruba - Superb characterisations. Your good with expressions. That old lady Amazonian is fantastic! However I'm actually loving the incidental characters in the top sketch. Plus I like the array of feathers that the warrior has. Good design.

TrashyWinsome and gruesome at the same time. I like your style very much. Your Robot kind of won me over also. Big fan of the colouring on the Alligator/Croc. Great choice of colours on it. But it's the look on the Amazonian's face that makes me smile - you've captured something there! The shocking red hair with the green on the face is superb. Nice work.

iloveso *Snort* That face just cracks me up. She looks peaved!!!

JpedroWonderful pose on your Amazonian. Plenty of energy and life in her - you somehow manage to nail those poses so that the whole form works! It's great work again from you. You have a fine understanding of colour and subject. Your characters always feel so well rounded and complete and yet you manage to stay true to the whole stylized aspect. That's a real talent you have there.

bstskWOW!!!! Wonderrully stylized and great, great action shot! Beautiful finish too. Those rich colours are simply gorgeous. Just one thing... Any chance you can present it a little larger for us? I really want a close up. Just as with your Centuar the character screams dynamic and it's incredibly iconic too. Strong visuals from the design, to colouring to even stylizing a suitably complimentary background. Stella work!

Blackcherry It's looking good! I'm quite excited to see what you're going to do with the colouring. (Still impressed with your joker colours BTW) Those lines are becoming more and more polished everytime you do one of these challenges. Just out of curiosity at what size are you working? Also top pose on the panther/jaguar/Lion?

Marcus Welbey Another contender for nailing the stylization. Bang on! I like the head design very much - just sets it off nicely from the average Amazonian. Super pose too. Not an easy position to illustrate - I think you've done a great job there.

GRMC A classic look and feel to it. Nice dramatic tones too, she certainly looks like the intimidating characters that mythology wrote about. Looking forward to some colour.

Angel in the UK Thoroughly enjoyed the various stages and I like the pose especially of your Amazonian. I like the way the leaves wrap the base of the picture - nice touch. Good anatomy also. Looking forward to more colouring. Keep it up.

Rosatron Very funny!!!! Excellent work and an authentic looking amazonian too. Brilliant realisation of the topic. Very amusing. I love her whole shape and springy pose! Very striking!! Cool colour work !

MurdokXSolid Amazonian feel to it. Love the overall look and feel, both in tone and colour. You've kind of captured that mossy jungle Temple feel. I enjoy the way you daub highlights and shadows on your work. You seem to know just the correct amount. I'm torn though because I feel I want you to go tighter with the finish, but I must admit I like the painterly quality of your stuff!

ArtiphatsAgain great stylization. Nice line-work, very nice in fact. Did you do each of those scales on the snake!? That's patience! And you've manage to make a complicated thing like her hair blowing around , into something very readable and clear. Nifty line work there in particular. Overall an accomplished piece, with parts that could have been very messy and complicated on the eye - yet you've managed to refine it all perfectly. Good stuff!

Dreygus Very post modern interpretation of the subject matter! I like the pencil through the nose. Very well observed and the idea is hip! Cool colours and I like the finish on the backgorund jungle. However i wonder if the background were subdued a tad wether she might stand out a little more... Anyway - plenty of energy to her so it's all cool!

Tipa Are you going to keep at it? Because that's actually a very workable style you have. If you can refine the finish I think you've got something.

albertocubatas That's nice and gorey. I like that. Satisfys the 'Dario Argento' in me....Always partial to a bit of blood and gore. I think her expression on the second picture is outstanding. Very funny!

loztvampir3 Any more from you ? That is looking interesting, would like to see where it ends up.

Grandmaster Spec Sorry I can't quite determine the shape of it.... I'll have to wait for more.

a bit late to the party, hello everyone.

gun trouver: that's ridiculoulsy good and funny! :D

macaruba: i really like the idea and the old lady is great. but i find the pose of the amazon confusing. i'm asking myself what she's doing that requires sitting in such an uncomfortable way.;P i mean, the pose itself is cool but i think i'd expect her in a more dramatic fighting scene, ready to pull some matrix move. :)

cartoon mike: nice amazon. :) i think her forehead isn't properly in perspective, as well as her eye, making her head look bulby.

Ha, ha - DigitallyDumbfounded - mmm, if you don't know, this is a traditional Amazon tribal test of endurance and initiation. The young woman must correctly balance herself guided by the toxins from the skin of the Dendrobates azureus frog. Traditionally she must balance using a small sword and a large weapon, the position must be kept for one cycle of the full moon, before the tribe Chieftains.
God, I can't believe you didn't pick up on that one, it's so obvious!!!!!!

DigitallyDumbfounded - Nice Amazon Warrior (but isn't that Tinkerbell?)
cartoonM!ke - Nice lines
Tommoy - The colours bring out the shapes now
Angel Intheuk - I like her very much, I liked the olive tone to her skin on your first coloured on, a bit too bright now.

The Antarctican: Thanks :) I'm almost done with the colouring so I'll be posting soon. I've been trying to make my linework cleaner for colours. The initial drawing is always a lot messier though lol. Had some trouble with deciding on a pose so glad you like it. As for the animal I'm not exactly sure what I want it to be, but it's definately some sort of big cat! Currently I'm working at the original scanned in size which is around 2250 x 3072 pixels.

You going to submit an entry for this one? Your original sketch was really cute.

Angel IntheUK: Really like your finished piece. She has cool hair :D

Cheers Macaruba for the advice, I knew something wasn't right but I'd sort of lost inspiration at that point - I've olived her up, maybe a bit too much? Not enough? Er..not sure now been looking at it too long, comments welcome.

Thanks for comment as well Blackcherry, i'm interested to see yours coloured :)

Tipa - I'm almost done. Update below. Good luck with the exams. Oh and in terms of refining. Well your figure on horseback is actually crafted out of some nice shapes, you have good preportions to her, maybe you could apply that to the horse too. So make the head a little larger... Also what about some hoof design. It doesn't need to be realistic, but maybe styled similar to the front hooves, just to maintain a style that matches throughout. I realise you've no time to work on it futher - but they're just quick ideas. However I just want to stress; these are just my thoughts, there is no right or wrong about it and I don't meant to imply that you should do any of this. The beauty of drawing is that it's personal to you and I don't wish to contradict your own personal style and approach at all.

Macaruba - Nice details. Cool frog too. Loving the expressions and the use of textures. I like your premise alot. Nifty idea!. Oh and I changed tack completely. Below is the sketch that my final is based on.

Blackcherry. Please don't think I was suggesting you clarify the 'Big Cat' - in fact I like the ambiguity and the fact that it's your creature based on all those feline derivatives. After all we're in the land of the myths right, so why not conjure your own mythic beast to suit your Amazonian. In ref: to the size I also have started working to those parameters.

DigitallyDumbfounded - Looking very nice and 'radiant'. Great use of yellows to achieve that. It really brings the ambient light into play.

Thank you Black Cherry.

Same to you. You've composed a great scene with nice soft gentle hues. It all compliments itself beautifully. Another strong piece. And again - great line-work. I like the beast alot. It has weight to it! You've embued it with genuine personality. Which gives the work a sense of pathos. Ace!

Macaruba - great narrative in yours. You've managed to compose all those elements and avoid making it too cluttered. Great skill and design all around and just plain fun to engage with. :D

Digitally Dumbfounded - it's positively glowing! It really has light and energy. That's some masterful painting/rendering skills you have.

GRMC Great finish and colouring. Very solid strong looking female. Excellent stuff again!

Angel in the UK Solid finish to your Amazon. I like the legs a great deal I think you've nailed the colouring bang on, with some nice soft shading around the knees in particular. Her hair and earings are evocative too, nice observation.

The Antarctican, cool entrie,so weight baggage. I like so much her hair.
GunTrouver, I like so much your sketches, there are the most funny entries in this challenge.
Grandmassa Mr. Spect, WTF! the detail of the noddles is great!

WOW! This is going to be a really tough round!

Antarctican I am blown away once again. What a great character you have there. Love the blues, and the attention to details. Great work sir.

Gnahz, yup, that chick is pretty ugly, but I really like her. I'm a sucker for an artist that takes a direction other than what would be expected within a given topic. She's pretty scary, awesome!

Marcus, BlackCherry, GRMC, JPedro, DigitalDf, Macaruba, AngelInTheUK, and those of you on the previous pages, I don't have time at the moment to comment on any more, but I see you all and I'm honored to be in such great company. See you all on the oter side of voting, look for more comments and crits on my post there.

Oh and Tipa, to answer your question, your piece had some great shapes going in that early stage, but it would have been nice to see the characters rendered out more, and the animal running through a forest, or across a plain or something. I know you had other priorities this month, so maybe next time :)

ok peace!

Well I know it's super late. It's 9:43pm here and I forgot that the deadline was in GMT time. I'm in New York so I was actually at work when I was supposed to turn it in. Anyways, I really just want to post this to say that I set a deadline and met it (even though it wasn't the right timezone, it still has yet to be 11:59pm here haha.) Congrats to the winner.

Time up! I'll set up the Voting thread shortly - and lagiaconda, I've let a few people off for similar lateness in past challenges so I'll be fair and do thesame here - HOWEVER, I can't do this in the next stage, so be sure to post your final in the VOTING thread by the set deadline, as I can't allow work to go through that doesn't hit that deadline, sorry!

Thanks everyone for your finals, i'll post another message soon with further info on the Voting thread - back soon! :)

800 or 1024 sized images are fine for this Voting stage, but please remember that high-res versions are great for 2DArtist magazine, so if you come in the top 10 we'd love it if you could email accross your high-res versions.

Please post all entries in the Voting thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=161977) before 8th July 2009 10:30AM GMT+1.00 (British Summer Time: http://wwp.britishsummertime.co.uk/).

Only entries posted in the SUPER Stylised Challenge - June 2009 - Amazon Warrior Woman - VOTING! thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=161977) before this date will be eligible for Voting!

Voting will then start immediately afterwards and will run until 15th July 2009 10:30AM GMT+1.00 (British Summer Time: http://wwp.britishsummertime.co.uk/)

We will post to commence the Voting on the 8th July.

New Voting Rules and Restrictions

In order for your vote to be valid, your post count must be 50 or above AND you must have been registered on the ConceptArt.org forums for at least 6 months. The ONLY exception to this rule is if you have contributed an entry yourself to the challenge.
If you want to vote but are not a contributor of the challenge, you need to have been registered on the ConceptArt.org Forums for at least the last six months, AS WELL AS have 50 posts already to your name.
It goes without saying that all voters MUST look through each of the entries before posting their score.
Finally, don't vote for yourself or get your friends to vote for you in an attempt to influence votes, it's not an attractive quality.
The 3DTotal team are all able to vote from their CA.org accounts some of us have fewer than 50 posts but we know who we are!

We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!
Please feel free to give reasons for your selection, as it will be good feedback for everyone!

Thanks again for the great work that you have all put in. We look forward to this month's entries! Good luck, everyone!

Many thanks for all your hard work!

www.imissedthedeadline.com. Oh dear. This is my first proper 'challenge' challenge I have entered. And the reason I was late finishing was mostly because I am lazy!! Silly Pip!

I mostly enter/participate in the challenges here on concept to improve/try new things. Everyones work is so inspiring it is hard NOT to want to push yourself further. This is the first digital drawing where i have felt confident enough not to use black outlines (either scanned or drawn). This is quite a big leap.

I have been experimenting with the burn tool too, and although i know you shouldnt over use it ,I think its been fairly succesful here.

I would love some crit on the piece and hopefully next competition i will finish in time!

- DigitallyDumbfounded - mmm, if you don't know, this is a traditional Amazon tribal test of endurance and initiation.

GunTrouver - I love the sic head.
The Antarctican - Have you got any more WIPs, I can't wait to see your progress.
