Choosing multiple selections simultaneously?

Hi guys. Is there a way to choose multiple selections at the same time? Like, I get a polygonal lasso, then select a square, then make another selection somewhere else without canceling the previous one?

Hold shift to add to a selection. One active selection can have several different areas at once.

you can also make pen paths to be more precise then make the paths into selections.
