hellooooooo,

well back in the day i started off a sketchbook, but as these things sometimes do, it kind of eventually died.

in the intervening time i got sucked into "work" work and its only in the last few months i've been trying to rediscover a few things - like drawing and more importantly, enjoying it. For a long time the sight of a blank page (or screen) was enough to paralyse me from the neck down...

...so here's a collection of some speedpaints, doodles and whatnot that i've done since...erm, march i think. Theyre all done purely for my own amusement and as a way to wind down from the sort of stuff i do during the day

*edit* ,moved all images to second post

Cool pictures in here, you have a nice variety in style. My favs of this bunch would be Villain and eyetower, they've that extra je ne sais quoi, you know?

Lots of interesting shapes and ideas that stand out a bit. You do nice things with the colours you use but I think you'd be able to do even more if you varied your line width even more.

Wormhead is a favorite.

So in the spirit of "internation portrait month" i thought i'd contribute something.

rendering it "old-school" with just paper, a pencil, a mirror and MY FACE would be more of a challenge than my usual photoshop based workflow

i spent an hour or so on this, there was only diffuse window lighting so the lack of strong modeling light was a bit of a hindrance.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/selfportrait01.jpg

i hope i can do a lot better than this in the future - must keep practicing!

So here's what i've been doing with myself this week...

"Vampire Hunter" - Speedpaint that took about 30 minutes

An illustration for a newsletter at work. Can't show it all yet, but here's the tiniest most miniscule sneek-peek

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/crypeek01.jpg

And finally, i got a fairly small (7inch) bust off ebay to do some studies with - and thats exactly what i ended up doing. A couple of hours and some graphite ended up producing this.

i've been trying to make sense of an idea for a picture - struggling a little with composition, i think it might be working, but i'm not 100% sure. I might leave it for a bit and see how it looks with fresh eyes...

so here's some work in progress - i'm not going to explain whats going on, as i'm not entirely sure myself.

I didnt get much time for any digital work this week, i've been brushing up on theory/tutorials and also trying to wean myself off a wacom and onto a more nutritious and crunchy diet of traditional media

So to start, here's some random doodles i didnt have time to take any further - even though there's a few i have definate plans for

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchbook_comp10_web.jpg

Then today, using a cast generously on loan from the Cakeypigdog (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42442) collection, i tried my hand at some more still lifery...no plumb lines, i'm trying to just get comfortable with graphite before i worry about that sort of thing

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/stilllife_eyeful01_web.jpg

Ah, isn't she lovely

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sunday_stilllife02_web.jpg

And finally, i finally managed to break the psychological terror barrier that's gripped me every time i even think of using paints.
So even though this is just some hour and a bit of gouache tomfoolery, its a bit of a personal milestone, having not gone near anything paint like for nigh on 6 years...eventually acryllics are on the cards, and who knows, one day, the mother of all media..OIL PAINTS

Baby steps first though

a couple of recent studies here.

The first is from a screen-grab from "Breaking Bad" - i tried to loosen up on the brushwork and go a little madder with the colour, i.e. worrying about relative colour and warmth/coolness rather than exactly reproducing whats "real". Which seems to have worked to some degree.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/study_breakingbad01_04_web.jpg

the second is a from the fillum "The New World" - one of only 2 good films* made by Colin Farrell (and his eyebrows)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/study_newworld_forest01_web.jpg

Both took about an hour and a half each

*The other was "In Bruges"

Went to the inaugural Dr. Sketchy event in Nottingham yesterday (with Mr. Anderson, Mr. CakeyPigDog (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=42442) and some of his very talented co-workers) and had a blast - even if i did almost blow a gasket trying to do some of the drawings within the 10 minute time limit.

So here's some of what was produced - again, 10 minutes isnt a lot of time, and on top of that was my general discomfort with non-digital media. (There's no undo!)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchy_pose01_web.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchy_comp02_web.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchy_comp01_web.jpg

For the final drawing i decided to stop trying to draw "properly" and focus in on the moustachio’d countenance of the compere in the group shot.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchy_tache01_web.jpg

All that and i won a chocolate bun too.

p.s. oh and here's some sketchbook studies from during the week. Frogs and a lonely simian - what more could you want?

Quite a mixed bag this week, so here's what's what

SpeedPaints
A couple based on the topic "Mean Machine", done in the usual hectic lunchtime 30 mins

Mean Machine #1

Mean Machine #2
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/mean_machine02_web.jpg

HEADCASES

I've just started a sketchbook devoted to quick studies - the initial target is 100 heads..after that who knows, hands, gestures, poses, ears and all that
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchbook_headstudies01_web.jpg

And now for some utterly pointless sketchbook doodles

Its a bit rough and ready, but these are supposed to be the sort of thing you DON'T want to wake up and find lurking at the end of the bed
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/baddream_wip1.jpg

And then there's the following - no rhyme or reason whatsoever
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchbook_comp12_web.jpg

another head study to carry on this months theme

not really going for any particularly fancy rendering style, just a simple round brush and trying to make as accurate marks as possible. It's all about the drawing!

not a huge amount to show for my weekend, but i did get round to doing another head ref piece - despite the apparent simplicity, a lot trickier to do than it looks. Craggy old men (no offence mr. henriksen) are a LOT easier to draw...

feels like AAAAaaages since i was on here - not a huge amount to show for my absense, but here's what i've got

a quick head study, going for a more stylised approach, particularly inspired by daniel chavez (http://dc-concept.blogspot.com/) - only about 30 minutes worth though

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/headstudies05_01.jpg

and today, a speedpaint!
BRAIN DEAD

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/braindead01_web2.jpg

so thats it - after a couple more months of studies and speedpaints i'm hoping to be ready to tackle some more finished pieces. Possibly.

another head study tonight. With this one i wanted to do a bit of exploration into colour, so having looked at a picture that had a palette i liked (in this case one of carlos huantes') i tried to recreate a similar feel in my own. Note: This doesn't mean colour picking!

Again, as with the others the actual "finish" of the drawing wasn't too important, so i haven't gone in and smoothed everything off.

All in all, a useful exercise, and something i'm going to try and do more of!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/headstudies06_web-1.jpg

*and in case you're wondering, it's based on a pic of Peter "Robocop" Weller i had lying around*

So "Headruary" has come to an end, it's definitely helped, but it's also confirmed how far i still need to go. I haven't even begun tackling the more tricky areas such as expressions, mood, age etc. I'll probably keep going on this for a bit longer and them move onto something else - hands and gesture drawing look like likely candidates right now

With all that and some busy technical demands at work, not much to show for myself since last time. But here it is anyway

A quick lunchtime speedpaint of this excellent model mini-skull (http://www.freedomofteach.com/products/skeletons/male_skull_student)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/skullstudy01_web.jpg

And then onto the speedpaints

TREE GOD
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/treegod_web.jpg

And

DREAMS
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/dreams01_web.jpg

And in completely unrelated news, I also saw a few things on the interpipes...if this thing (http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/05/microsofts-courier-digital-journal-exclusive-pictures-and-de/) has a decent paint app and pressure sensitivity then i know what i want for christmas

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/03-05-10courier.jpg

Also i saw this (http://toysrevil.blogspot.com/2006/06/new-takara-genx-core-body.html), which frustratingly isn't available to buy as a standalone mannequin. If only it was - it looks so useful. And limber!

A lot of things going on this month, but sadly not as much of it art related as it should be.

Still there was a little activity in that area, so here's what happened

Headruary!
My mission to learn/relearn some of the basics continues in earnest, the picture below is what i've managed to do since starting
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/headuary_sheet_web.jpg

But thats not it! Work picked up copies of a new series of gnomon dvds (http://www.thegnomonworkshop.com/store/product/819/Dynamic-Figure-Drawing:-The-Head) which look like they could be pretty useful, so looking forward to seeing how they go.

I managed to finish off another sketchbook, first one of the year, and so for no other reason than to show i've been doing SOMETHING here's some of the er, highlights from the last few pages

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchbookscan17_web.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/sketchbookscan18_web.jpg

I even took one of the sketches above and developed it a little further - Mermaid!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/mermaid.jpg

And over in the Storytellers forum i had a crack at a book cover for "John Carter of Mars". Still only work in progress (and likely to remain so)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/johncarter_wip01-1.jpg

Dang man, keep pushing those black and white pieces, do you lay color over the top of them? If you flatten out the image and raise the key up a bit, when you glaze in your colors with multiply and overlay layers your shadows will stay warm, the values are just so good in the BW comps. Cheers.

Thanks for the comment!

still struggle with colour, so stick to black and white if i just want to concentrate on form/rendering/technique etc

sometimes do colourise them though (the mr. bongo piece started off monochrome) but can be tricky not "killing" them with lifeless colourisation.

been a few more speedpaints since the last post - heres some of the least worst efforts (i wont even mention what i did to poor Chewbacca in one of them).

They'll have to do until i decide on something a little more substantial to tackle. Have a few ideas for some "projects", but as ever deciding on just one isn't as easy as i'd like.

So some moody thumbnails for a pic that hasnt quite resolved itself yet. No idea what its about, thats probably the problem

did a speedpaint last week and decided it might be worth developing a bit more fully than i usually do

right so heres where things are so far - lot of behind the scenes stuff done, and almost ready to get stuck into something final(ish)

using the 3d as diorama /ref > NOT going to be painting over it (Big difference! ). It's something i've done only a couple of times before, and its also endorsed by James Gurney, so i'm not entirely misguided. Also doing a rough blockout of the ship has helped clarify a few things in my mind...whether any of this will make any to difference to the end result remains to be seen!

so finally, finished! well more or less - its been a bit of a slog seeing this through this far, the initial excitement of an idea is one thing, but seeing it through to the bitter end is another.

Once i've got a few more "completed" pieces under my belt, i'll try and turn my attention to more colourful work - right now, it feels thats a seperate problem to solve, and one that i can tackle once i've worked out some issues with my fundamental drawing skills

anyway, thats it for now. Aaaand rest.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v714/pixelherder/siren_final_web.jpg

*EDIT* DESCRIPTION!

This started as a speedpaint on the topic of "Mythical Creatures", so ended up going with something Siren-Like

"In the picture, the idea is that she sits like a spider at the centre of her lair, hoading trinkets, shiny things and favourite mementos. Waiting tirelessly, she's constantly alert for the movement of her next potential victim, that she can detect through an elaborate and far-ranging network of ropes, strings and threads, strung out across the bay."

Last image turned out great man! Wonderful control of values and edges. The only thing I don't get is the "story" behind the piece. Why is she tied down to a bunch of skulls in a swamp full of wrecked ships?

Its been quiet round here again - as has been the case for most of this year, i've been doing fewer pieces, but trying to spend a bit more time on things when i get the chance. So hopefully a case of quality > quantity. Thats the theory anyway

Having said that i do miss the 'ol speedpaints, so might have switch things up in a bit (but possibly after a bit of a break to recharge the creative batteries, and enjoy whatever sort of summer we're going to get round here)

Right, so what we have here is a couple of more warhammer themed pics - a trusty old spacemarine, and a less well known (to me anyway) Empire greatsword from the warhammer fantasy universe. Theres some process shots and even....ANIMATED MOTHERFLUMPING GIFS!

Very happy with some bits, not so happy with others, but overall represents a big effort at trying to up my game a bit. Some valuable last minute crits from some extremely talented friends really helped too
