Update. Looking a way to put that polar karhu there somewhere.
There will be a Finnish spitz puppy behind his right foot, Helsinki is always desperately trying to hide it's country roots and pose all modern to the camera. So ya, kicking baby animals is the way.

Got some more work done. I made a few minor changes and inked him. I'm probably going to go with a really simple color scheme here, it seems like it would fit the drawing and I don't really have the skills or equipment to do a really good job (no wacom).
Anyways, I'm always open to suggestions.

Cosmitron, sweet, the same light touch as in your Erica. But what's the link with Paris.
Progress on Berlin.

Tommoy> that's my vision of paris behaviour.
autoquote: "Dirty, snob, speed, depressed yet charming, sensual, essential, festive. Young as a fresh partying teenager with the heart of a tired mother, Paris has the eyes plenty of lights."
That's my narrow subjective personal vision of it.
Besides, it has nothing to do with the dress/character design, but if you squint, you'll see paris map :D
BTW, I just love your "Berlin" !

Razorleaf - I think what people are talking about with your piece, is that It works as an illustration, But not as a Character Design. If you pulled her of the environment she would loose any Base of personality, a character should be able to stand alone and tell a story. Maybe its different for this CHOW but keep that in mind. Good work though.

Cosmitron: Awesome piece..love the pose and the linework.
Tommoy:Nice take on Berlin...it's of my fav cities though I have a slightly different impression of it...It seems to be getting back a bit of it's bohemian and artistic culture after years of communist rule.
Gah..too tired and it took too long to get to this drawing. Must've gone through dozens of poses to get to this and I'm not fully sure of it..meh, guess I'll have to sleep on it.

Darklogic - I agree, most of my work is illustrative and this piece in particular lacks design. It is hard to step away from the illustrative aspect when I've been doing it so long but thats why I participate in the Chows and Cows so that I can move into a new realm of artistic style. Thanks :)

My vision on Amsterdam: The upper part is the trashy, relaxed partygirl side of the city people have the most fun with. The lower part is the rich history in art and architecture people tend to overlook (because they are looking at the sexy upper part :P)

OK, so here's our somewhat final outcome. Please feel free to comment if something bugs you.
Helsinki, as told before, is very keen to appear as an international metropolis to others. Thus he's smoking three cigarettes at a time and wearing a coat way too big for his thin frame. The design of the coat is loosely based on the clock tower of the Helsinki railway station. The "3T" in his belt buckle symbolizes that Helsinki is the only city in Finland that has trams and a subway system. 3T is the number of the popular tourist tram that goes around the city in circles.
The Finnish spitz puppy at his feet resembles his true self: no matter how much he tries to hide it, Helsinki still is a part of Finland, and therefore is doomed to be referred as "the place where people fight with polar bears" and "the country whose president looks like Conan O'Brien".
And yes, it always snows here and we all born with blue eyes and blond hair.

On a general note: Amsterdam isn't the godforsaken hellhole where hookers and drugs rain down from the sky like some people seem to think. But, as an interpretation it's totally legit of course :D :yayca:

Hi guys,
This is my first post, and I thought this is as good a place as any to start. I really liked this CHOW's idea and seeing everyone's awesome work encouraged me to stop by and post something.
I chose to draw Rio de Janeiro, since that is where I come from and probably the only city I am comfortable drawing in a bikini. ;) I figured if Rio were a girl it would probably be an athletic, beach girl with a penchant for bursts of random violence. Obviously, it is my take on the two things my city is best known for, gorgeous beaches and, sadly, its high criminal rate.
Comments and criticisms are a must! :)
Also, I apologize beforehand for any forum rules I may break in the near future.

wow there have been some amazing entries this round! i decided in the end to change my city to stalingrad ussr, i realise this city has a new name these days but theres no mention in the rules about it being a current city and to many people stalingrad is still a very important place. it has been estimated that 2 millions people lost their lives in this city. let us hope it never happens again.
some of the ideas im toying with:
- named in joseph stalins image
- he leaves skulls in his footsteps (as bones are found even to this day)
- the red star carved into his chest, a never healing wound a reminder to the old soviet history
- soviet flat at his feet along with the hammer and sickle (in ref to the downfall of the ussr)
- smoke in the bg as its a major mining city even to this day (may make this more character related if i can... )
- he is in the shadows but in plain sight (it may be passed but let it never be forgotten. its in plain sight, but no longer in focus)
- soviet superhero?
- bulet wounds still holding bullets in some of them
- classic strongman russian soviet worker stereotype figure in overalls, now - standing at ease after the downfall of communism
im sure theres more but thats kinda the drift, propaganda style layout is very quick and may go/change

arthemis ix- and now my amsterdam totally sucks now! lol
but on a serious note i really like your interpretation of the city. adding the hint of architecture to the skirt is a nice touch and it looks great. the only thing that had me SLIGHTLY raising an eyebrow was the costume itself [ignoring the symbolism in the skirt and all]- don't know why, but it screams old western saloon to me XD

Buffichar: Thank you! I am enjoying the CHOW already. :)
openanewworld: B! I think the pose on B, with the lanterns shows her frame very well, though I am not sure how you will get the overcrowded part across...er...maybe putting the highrises/shards of A into the picture somewhere?
CKLamb: Hah! I never thought of Austin as the handlebar mustache type! As for the arms, maybe have him protect his face from the sun (he is in the desert afterall) or holding a bike wheel?
PixelFish: Oh thanks! I was trying to give her a friendly and mischievous look! And you are right, she does seem a few inches away from an embarrassing fall, I will take another look at her pose.
Cosmitron: Well, I for one, am speechless. She looks beautiful! I especially like her pose. Also, I didn't even notice the glass in her hand till I looked a second time, but I guess I was just too busy staring at her mysterious expression.

I love these challenges! It is so exciting and inspiring to see everyone's ideas.
Cosmitron: Love the mood and the colors. The pose is beautiful. Love it.
openanewworld: All of these look great. I think my fave is B. I also really enjoy the motion and pose of C. I think any of these would make great final images. I would say my least favorite is A, just because I find it a bit busy and I'd like to see the focus more on the character.
arthemis ix: Beautiful. Love the concept. Her dress is amazing.
rinjii: Love the style of this. Love the tentacles.
ThaDeus: Can't wait to see this finished. The shading is beautiful. I love her face and her pose.
Here is my vision of Savannah, Georgia. The idea is she is an aristrocratic southern belle with a dark side. She will have a dagger on her leg and I am trying to make half of her clothing seem pure and light and the other half dark, sultry, and dirty. Savannah looks stunning by the light of day, and the image she presents to those who do not know her well is of purity, beauty, and wealth. There is a great duality to Savannah. Dark and light, wealthy and poor, safety and danger.
I've really got to get this finished! Not much time left now. =)

Didn't think I'd make it, but I couldn't resist the opportunity to draw some large stone character ;)
This is Iqaluit, the capital of Nunavut territory. It was an old camping/fishing ground for the Inuit yet only got it's official status of 'city' in 2001. It is set in the remote tundra and is generally only accessible by airplane.
I meant to represent something very ancient meeting something new and unexpected. The inuksuk (stone person) greets an airplane, to the grounds of Iqaluit = many fish.

Sekino--Brilliant! I love it. Really original, and it has a strong point of view, despite it's wonderful simplicity.
IndigoSummers--She is indeed stunning. Lovely work--really looking forward to seeing this one through to completion.
Cosmitron--FANTASTIC body position. Wonderful character. It looks like it was shot in Super 8 by her jilted boy-toy.
CKLamb--Excited to see where this one goes. Right now, he appears to be stereotypically homosexual...not a bad thing, I'm just not sure if that's what you're going for. Shifting his body language, giving him more "masculine" clothing with a much looser fit, and changing his mustache would counterbalance that impression.
openaneworld--ooh! Can't wait to see where you go from here. They all look promising. I think for me it would be a combination of the body positioning from A and the environment from B (her pose is less interesting/original to me).
Pixeltuner--showing great promise! I tried to scroll back but couldn't remember if you had mentioned why you chose that color palette. It reads as quite calm and peaceful, and to me Tokyo seems anything but... Beautiful rendering.
NicHolS--I like the style you're working in. I'd love to know more about Stalingrad's personality, separate from the symbolism. Is he one-dimensional, or is there another side of him that might surprise us which you could also allude to?
Great start, Quillian. I like her expression--playful, seductive, mischievous. It looks like you've already sketched in the foot to balance her weight, but the colored portion looks like she might tip over.
ThaDeus--she's lovely. I don't have a strong sense of who she is yet, though...you could try playing with her expression a little to help show us what she's thinking and what she's about.
Mojokingbee--Great perspective and a really strong character. Her clothing seems slightly incongruous at this stage. Really looking forward to where you take her.
pahavasa--fantastic. Love it. Great description and analysis.
IceMoon--she looks beautiful but I don't have a very strong sense of her yet, personality-wise. I really like the colors you're using.
Arthemis IX--really, really strong. That dress is incredible, and I love how you've made it such a long format and tell her story from top to bottom. Great idea.
Buffichar--Could you think of a city within Nigeria that she might symbolize? I'm afraid you'll get disqualified for not following the brief if you don't. :) Is this the final drawing?
Tommoy--I love your work consistently from ChoW to ChoW. She's brilliant. Fantastic style, oozing with character.
Afraid that's all I have time for at the moment. Fantastic work, guys. Here is my final version, with a key if it's of interest.

Threw in some composite components, a first for me. The bike was a modern Fuji, trying to convert it into my Peugeot UO-8 fixed beater. Added a brick wall texture, trying to paint it in a bit better. Still pushing along on the figure, trying things out.

The dress does feel a little western, I think it's because of the lace :P
I like our different views on Amsterdam, though in a way they're quite the same :)
few crits:
CKLamb: Nice colours, want to see it when the character has more detail and blends in more with his environment!
IndigoSummers: Lovely sketch! Hope you have time to finish it, I'd love to see the clothing design.
Cosmitron: Very beautiful, it feels like a photo :)
Pixeltuner: Nice drawing! I like the little highlights. The only thing that feels a little off is the green hair because the whole picture has a more blue/purple atmosphere. Still, very nice!
openanewworld: I like A best because of the strong composition. Can't wait to see the finished piece.
mojokingbee: Nice perspective, start adding detail to the clothing to give it more character!
Good luck everyone :)

CKLamb: I like the face and the idea with the wall. Keep an eye on the anatomy. I think, the upper part of his right arm is a little bit short.
ThaDeus: A pretty pretty lady and wonderful shading. I only miss a little bit the "city-characteristics". Maybe you can add some interesting details.
courtyard: I love all the little details. You also did a great job on the shading. Only the face bothers me a little bit. But on the other hand, I can't say, why O__o
Sekino: Wonderful style!
IndigoSummers: Pretty sketch. I'm really curious what you're going to do with the colors. The concept already sounds interesting.
Cosmitron: Stunning *___*
Openanewworld: Awesome composition-thumbs. I like A the most.
Pixeltuner: Fun character design.
NicHolS: Intersting concept. You chose a challenging city. I can't wait to see your finished version.
Quillian: A really cute face. Maybe the upper part of her body is bend a little bit too far to the left.
I restarted my Munich :) I kinda liked the Art Noveau style I used in the first version but it was too trivial. I added a few details and changed the facial expression.
My Munich is a pretty, really snobbish lady, sitting on a mountain of pillows like the princess on the pea. She's rich, sexy and she loves beer ;)

courtyard--Hey, thanks for the feed back! I figure I owe you a little, too. I think the overall quality of your CHOW rocks, the only drag I'm getting actually has nothing to do with the character. The background is just a bit flat. It almost conveys the space with just the leading strokes on the ground, but I think it could use a little something.
Quillian-- I really dig the pose. However, I'm pretty sure she's about to fall over. Maybe use the gun like a staff, for support? Definitely want to see how fast you can pull this together.
ThaDeus-- I like the softness and ephemeral quality of the piece so far. Just be careful of going to soft and losing contrast and structure.
Cosmitron-- Obviously, your technical prowess is beyond reproach. The only thing I can really crit on is that (this is just me) the glow is kind of not bright enough in some spots to give it a bit more contrast, things are graying out a bit tonally. Ehh, I dunno, don't listen to me.
Sekino--Looks great...but needs more fish....mmmm..fish.
openanewworld-- I'm all about 'd'.
PixelTurner I'm pretty crazy over the rendering finesse though I'm not to sure about the blue, maybe sub with a yellow and see what you think?
IndigoSummer-- Mmmm..southern girls. Anyways, solid sketch, just try to steer it out of the ordinariness that can come along with that type of image.

Heehee, OK, so I rattled this out today... it's not greatly creative or thought through, but it gave me a chance to practise.
I did Glasgow - where I am living now.
My interpretation of Glasgow is a working class, industrial city. The people are friendly and a bit cheeky, but rough round the edges. As well as that, we also have one of the unhealthiest diets, and the lowest life expectancy in europe - hence the addition of the Irn Bru can.
Not really got the time to go through 10 pages of crits, but,
Cosmitron - I have only become aware of your work in the last few CHOWs, it is beautiful
Zephyri - nice lines, looking forward to seeing the colour.

New WIP here. (http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2280136&postcount=31)
I've got a few things changed, darkened the shadows a lot and tweaked some more of the colours to give it more of a tone of 'dying plants' (moreso how it would have looked a while ago versus how it looks now, really). Took in some of the advice - shortened the legs a little and have tried to include a bit more texture (particularly in the hair and coat so far). Some people on here and from other places have said I should have gone with the first pose - I'm not meaning to ignore the suggestion or anything, but the design with the pipes just seemed much more appealing to me and it simply wouldn't have been possible using a kneeling pose because I wanted her 'built in' to a surface via her own clothing. The initial pose would have been more powerful for an illustration piece but ultimately I'm trying to show off the various things going on with the character and a more vertical pose was required. Anyway if anybody has any last minute suggestions before I get to cleaning it all up tomorrow, I'd love to hear them!

Hey Felida--thanks for the comment. Please let me know if you can figure out what's wrong with her face! :) On yours, I think it would really help the image if you make the background in the art nouveau style as well, even if it's just throwing some simple black outlines around the cloud and ring (like you have with the water)
Hey Pixeltuner--cool...that makes sense. If you could maybe figure out a way to introduce some hard edges to the silhouette of her dress, that might help to emphasize the cold/clinical feel you're going for.
Hi CKLamb--I definitely know what you mean. My last two ChoWs were all background and no character (lol) so I was really trying to swing things in the opposite direction for this one. I tried a few ideas in the background, but it looked too busy to me. I'll keep thinking about how to add some interest--thanks so much for the comment.
Hunchback--LOVE it. Wow. I really like the colors that you're working with, too. Really looking forward to the final version.
Carnifex--it's looking really promising. You're amazing at cartoons, so I have no doubts that the end product will be nothing short of fabulous.
Cup of Tea?--Well, just looking at him makes me smile, so you've definitely captured his spirit. I think he fits your description perfectly--that's a cheeky grin if ever I've seen one.
Missile--Her facial expression and hair are lovely. I'm a bit confused about what her body is doing--is she lying down? And is her torso leaning into the pit, or are the pipes holding her in front of it? If she is lying down, it might be clearer if the backs of her calves are flush against the earth, with the rest of her body leaning back into the recessed area. I think it would also help if the pipes were impeding her movement more. Right now, it looks like she could just take off her coat if she wanted to leave. I think it's a powerful idea, though...
Hideyoshi--I think it's a lovely start...beautiful lines and colors. I can't wait to see where you take it.

Istanbul, almost there. Now's the time to pump...you up.
Hunchback - Great form, too loose to tell now, but I guess you're going to contrast all that dark with some loudness and detail.
Felida - Looks almost like an ad/logo for a brewery I saw. Great!
CK Lamb - I did not know Austin was the pink side of the red ribeye that is Texas. Nice touch with the blonde streak.

Further progress on the inks for San Francisco: made her face Not My Face (I have a bad habit of drawing my face on female figures) and made her hair curlier. Also got the djembes (the drums) inked. Not likely to ink the chinese coin or the Emperor Norton portrait and the parrots, as those will likely be painted straight, and closer to the end. Ditto the background.
Now to paint the flats. Whee.

Cosmitron: she's gorgeous. Love the colours and the bloom and her pose. All screams of a lazy parisian afternoon, but that hip, trendy way the french epitomise so well.
Hideyoshi: I think it's a good start.. the composition is working fine... mayeb try to push the s-shaped curve of the mech body more (the hips slanting one way the shoulders the other) and maybe you could exaggerate the proportions a bit, like make her head smaller, and the legs bigger, so the whole figure kinda grows the further down you go? Ooh, and it'd be neat if the metal work and the look of the technology got rustier the closer to the bottom you got!
Cup of Tea: having only visited glasgow once, I'd say you've captured the kind of feeling it had for me when I was there, and you've captured that self-effacing sense of humour the scots have!
Pixelfish: i love the fact we both have that eyes-closed-music-vibe going on, though the feel of each is totally different! Her head seems to be quite large up to say, the size of her legs, but the lack of background might be what's throwing me out right now.
Update on mine, some quick background colour and mucking around with palettes.. not sure if I'll get chance to finish before the deadline, but will certainly try!

Gorgeous work, Zephyri. I dig the earth tones
You are right about her head. It's partly because when we took the reference photo, my boyfriend (who is 6-4ish) was kinda looming over me. So the head looked proportionately bigger than the lower body. I meant to fix it but forgot. Good thing you reminded me before I got too far with the painting. (The skin flats are in, now, but should be resized quickly enough. Maybe take it to 85%? Don't think I want to take it below that.)

Reymus--he's looking awesome, but the angle of the water is throwing the perspective you worked so hard to achieve with his body. I think the horizon would be quite a bit higher...or perhaps you could make the background colors transition less abruptly so that the horizon is lost.
darklogik--the basketball kilt is brilliant. The stadium does get lost, so perhaps you could make the belt a solid color to give the eye a bit of a resting point?
xgabo--really great perspective decision. Looking forward to seeing it developed...
PixelFish--Gorgeous lines--can't wait for the color. She's a wonderful representation of SF. *edit* I've just seen the color and size adjustment--lovely choices.
Zephyri--I love how he's coming along. Really strong character choices, and the environment adds just the right tone without overcompensating. (Btw, the angel in your avatar lived on my desktop wallpaper for a couple of months before I joined CA...thanks for creating such jaw-dropping work!)
CKLamb--still loving it. Is the brick overlay a photo?
AhChu's--the hologram turntable is great, and I love the bold color you chose for it. Her body is really well done, but the dress is a little too texture-brushy at the moment, and because it's so highly-detailed it kind of throws the rest of the image off balance. Maybe if you could indicate that texture more that show it so explicitly? Also, her eyes look huge--is that meant to be lens distortion? Putting a really strong reflection of the turntable could add a bit of punch to the image and really drive home the surface quality of the goggles. It could also help make her more dimensional if you indicate how the goggles cast shadows on the face...here are a couple of ref images to show you what I mean: ref 1 (http://lib.store.yahoo.net/lib/sportsunlimited/OakleyGogglePhoto.jpg) ref 2 (http://images.teamsugar.com/files/upl0/1/15259/06_2008/gogglesonions.preview.jpg) ref3 (http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/2149574/goggles-2-main_Full.jpg)
mojokingbee--I know what you mean! I was tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to colorize mine too. Thankfully, this thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=156362) pointed me to this tutorial (http://en.367art.com/final.asp?id=93), which really helped.
buffichar--cool. I hope you'll post it when you do :)
Hideyoshi--My pleasure. She came out great.
Nichols--you've totally transformed it. He's beautiful...the blood trickling down is face is a really great touch.
Lennon--I think C is the strongest.
Hunchback--quickly becoming one of my favorites. the looseness is part of what makes it so chilling, so I hope you'll keep some of it. Really powerful work.

Looks like I won't have time to really finish this concept for the deadline - my computer's not working right now :( but I thought I'd post the sketch anyway.
New Songdo City - The first thing that came to mind when I was trying to get a feeling for this city was that it make me think of a city in the clouds at the same time as a city under the sea. Tranquil, Beautiful, Connected, Quiet Energy, Reaching towards that which is beyond the norm.
So with these thoughts in mind, I played around with a few human concepts but I didn't like that interpretation, to make such a city human seemed too relatable or something - kinda hard to describe - So I decided to take those thoughts into mind again and came up with a school of flying fish. They swim together, connected with a single purpose - trying to attain something beyond themselves. I planned to make them slightly transparent as I felt that this ubiquitous city's persona would not be made of flesh and bone but of pure energy. "A school of pure shared thought" and I'm planning to play with traditional korean patterns in the scales to give more sense of place and history.
-As for the background, I'm bridging the sea and sky with no horizon and reflective "coral" buildings.
I'll keep messing around with this and post it in my sketchbook when I finish so any comments/crits would still be awesome, till then I'm psyched to see the poll for this great CHOW ^^

Nichols: I showed one of your earlier drafts to my bf who is a big Russian history nut. Nice work--the propaganda poster look works well with this too.
Jefita: I think your style in this piece really fits the image of who your city thinks it is. It feels really down-homey with small incongruous notes (like the dead bird and broken heart) to give a more complex picture.
Jessi: Smashing as always.
Hawk: Lovely sketch, but alas, probably more appropriate as an environment rather than character. Still, I'd like to see it when it is finished. Are you going to keep up with it?
Max: You are the opposite of me, as I have to usually start with their heads. :) Nice photorealistic rendering though. Can't wait to see his face. (Moved to Seattle from Boston, incidentally.)
MattSmith: Very nice sketch. Love how you've defined your forms.

Max MArtelli, I hope you'll make it, because it looks awesome!
xgabo: Good stuff, your b/w is really something I like a lot how did you handle the subject.
Jefita: I really like yours, although, you've some great style (very expersive), perhaps you could use it more to your benefit by reinforcing the composition.
CKLamb: Very original, it's kinda cool.
NicHolS: Amazing stuff! I think you're 3th, 4th or 5th in my ranking, I still don't know. With more detail and perhaps something like a backlight and an elicopter behind could have been 1#.
-HAWK-: I had problems with my computer too, don't worry will kick ass in the next one, I'm pretty sure.
-JessiBean: I don't decide wether yours is my #2 or #1, but definitely one of my favorites. If it were for the treatment of the subject you would be somewhat down, but your technique is very professional, and it's a great drawing (same thing that happens with Cosmitron if you ask me).
-Matt Smith: Great stuff, I don't diced still how to rank you as it's only a drawing, but it's an amazing drawing, so there is my problem.
-mojokingbee: Best treatment of the subject ever, period!
-Darklit: Very psychodelic, I like how you mixed techniques.
-tron-one: You did a very good job, perhaps you could have work some more on the basic drawing, pay more attention in the pose and expresion, and perhaps you could have added more details.

Woha, another great round. Im outta time this week, so im out.
Some feedback:
Dragon4lunch: Long time no see! Nice job on the character! Will you finish it before the final burning? I would love to see some color on that thing.
Arthemis: Somewhat trashy city? I thought you were against all these preconceptions! ;-) Anyway, nice composition, but I think it needs a little more love compared to your previous entries. I like the dress design, but maybe it could be slightly more dynamically folded, and maybe her trashyness is slightly overpowering her "cultural" side.
Jessibean: Exceptional colors, I love the warm saturated look and the background details ! I think its a bit hard for an outsider to recognize texas in it. Some parts look a bit unfinished/flat though. But since these fall outside the focal areas, I think you can get away with it. It distracts a little though.
MattSmith: Great composition, I would love to see you do colors next time.
Hunchback: Love the greenish tint, I think it fits the Tokyo theme very well. Conceptually, maybe the background could have had more neon things, the green squares kinda take away from the character.
Ghostbrush: Lovely atmosphere. I miss seeing some part of the destruction in her though. She seems very much like the city of peace, and without the your text it would be hard to pinpoint it as hiroshima. I love the details about the flowers.
Clochette: Beautiful concept, maybe the strongest in depicting the city.
Cosmitron: Wow, just wow. What planet are you from? Amazing execution that works in b/w as well in color. However looking at your wips, I think I like the step just before the finished piece a bit more. It's very extreme and therefore has more impact, I think. But it may be a bit hard to see since it's quite a small picture. I Love that she's overlayed on the shape of paris, very simple but very good way of echoing the city in the picture. Oh, can we have a high res pic, pretty please?
openanewworld : Nice colors, and love the paintery feel to it. Something about her pose is a bit off though, maybe the foreshortening of the upper arm holding the bag is a bit off. Great pic otherwise.

Some comments - will get to everyone soon, this is what I had some time for now...
Clochette - lovely, as always... I adore your lines and color.
Cosmitron - I wouldn't know where to start, this is stunning (like last week's). I agree with most of the comments that the bloom got a little out of hand, but a stunning piece in the end.
Felida - there was something about the framing of your piece that I preferred in post 136 as opposed to the final. It is, however, very nicely done... Some things about the anatomy are wonky, like the crossed leg
Hunchback - I love the color and the painterly thing you have going on. It'd be nice to see some more contrast in the edge quality - everything is really soft all over, a little more focus in some areas, like her face, would give it punch.
Matt Smith - lovely drawing, I agree that I would like to see what you do with color next go round.
IndigoSummers - You have some intense costume design going on here, which is great, though for me personally, I'd like to see a touch more of the southern belle/ladylike thing than the goth thing on Savannah (but we all have different takes on the city, don't we? :teeth: ) Also, I think the rendering is letting you down a bit... everything all over has the same hard black shadow and bright white highlight, which flattens it out - some more subtlety to the shading/value and an overall sense of a lightsource can help this read better as 3D forms. All in all, very nicely done.
Lennon - It is a very well rendered, very dark take on Buenos Aires... I think the photo corn in the front is contrasting a little too much with your rendering, and I think this is leaning more towards an illustration than a sense of Buenos Aires' character for me, personally... it would be nice if the figure and the figures' expression/clothing related the story more than the things around her.
Pixeltuner - tentacles! win! :teeth: I like that you are experimenting, some of it gets a little busy - maybe a darker background like in your second wip image, it helps the silhouette of your character read better. Tokyo looks pissed.
Max Martelli - your rendering is very precise on the pants and the shirt, but it goes flat on the face. Maybe some looser brush strokes, blocking in shapes first and then building up can help you get more sense of form rather than rendering each piece alone to completion - it makes your overall piece feel more cohesive when you work on the whole image at once rather than a piece at a time.
Jefita - I like that there is a sense of a personal connection in this for you. some of the proportions on the woman's face seem a little off to me. I love the background.
OpenANewWorld - WOW. Just wow. I really like this one.
ThaDeus - I really liked your drawing, esp the 2nd to last image in your wips, I think some of that quality was lost, tho, in the final - the colors got a little muddy and the form has been lost some. It is lovely, nevertheless.
Sekino - wonderful departure from the norm, and brilliantly executed. I really like this one.
xgabo - very striking piece... I really like the environment you have built around your figure. and the face is wonderful. The body seems to be rendered differently that the rest, it is very smooth, and in places, kinda flat or even shiny looking... it'd be nice to see some of the texture of her clothes and some of that grittier rendering on her. Very cool.
Hideyoshi - I really love the robotic elements you've designed, it looks very slick and polished... some anatomy issues are nagging at me (where her torso meets her arm is getting kind of round and mushy, her neck looks a little short..?) but overall, very nice.
Carnifex - I LOVE the character in this, it is wonderfully done. Some of the rendering is a little messy, esp on the figure... but it is still vrey strong, I love his expression.
mantoe - I like the thought you have put into your Savannah (and it is clearly personal, which is rad)... I think the lack of a defined light source and some of the rendering are letting you down - the white highlights on the red fabric, the lack of a defined light source, etc... maybe try to think next time about how to set the atmosphere and environment mood with your light.
baxter - very gritty, nice character... I wish it wasn't cropped at the ankles like that, it looks awkward (and kinda like you wanted to avoid the feet), maybe challenge yourself next time to get the whole figure in there.
Nichols - I LOVE this one... I might have worked more on my russian city, but you totally put my efforts to shame. Badass work.
CKLamb - I promise I wasn't trying to bite on your choice of city (but Austin is so awesome, isn't it?) Love your take... the figure seems a little too long, but nothing too outlandish. And I wish his shoes (and the figure in general) was a little sharper/more finished to pop it out from the background more. But basically yours is great.
AhChu - The figure seems a little disjiunted, especially the long torso/awkward hips and the shoulders - maybe defer to some reference on your pose if there are some things you are unsure about...
And because two people commented on me missing the topic, I thought I might explain my Austin a little more cause this is a personal interpretation (I have a special love affair with Austin)... Austin isn't exactly Texas... it is, but it isn't, it is an oasis in a desert that is Texas. Miss Eberly is Angelina Eberly who defended Austin and fired the cannon shots when the Houstonians came to invade and move the capital city in the Texas Archives War (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_Archive_War), and the people still defend Austin passionately today. The BG is the GreenBelt (http://www.joshball.com/imagedump/photos/HamiltonPool/HamiltonPool_01.jpg), a nature preserve and the aquifer that gives Austin water, has impossible, beautiful scenery and where we go on epic hikes (more here (http://www.joshball.com/imagedump/photos/twinfalls/DSC_0551.JPG), here (http://www.joshball.com/imagedump/photos/twinfalls/grnblt10toast.jpg) and here (http://static.panoramio.com/photos/original/1855915.jpg) )... Orange/Longhorns for UT, and just the colors of Austin - it is orange and warm and welcoming, like the girl everyone wanted to date in college... Austin is Quentin Tarantino movies and the Alamo Drafthouse (http://www.originalalamo.com)... it is full of smart, healthy people who like to party ALOT on 6th St... Austin is the home of Whole Foods and South by Southwest. Austin is impossibly cool, the live music capitol of the world, totally down to earth and relaxed. And I miss it lots.
If you haven't been, you should go... :teeth:

Jessi's depiction is spot on. Austin is DRASTICALLY different from any other place in Texas, or the US from my own experience.
BTW, I think I got crazy proportions from using posemaniac for figure reference....or I'm just very...very...very.... off. I even compacted a full 3/4 of a head from my original sketch.

I've never been to Austin, but it is the one place in Texas I would consider moving. I thought both CK and Jessi captured it just fine. rE: Jessi's piece - I didn't catch the Eberly reference, but the guitar for the music and the green hills for hill country and the little star tattoo and the texas shirt all seemed perfect to me.
Gonna do a full run down on the finals later, when I get back home.

-JessiBean: Great usefull comment, worst timing. Next time, tell me any day but the last one at the final hour! ;) Thanks a lot I'll take it in consideration in the next one.
Let me also say that under that chriteria, some works even as the one of Cosmitron, that's heading to win, or even yours are not exactly focus on the character particularities (as they are actually sort of common characters), but instead, they seem to win because of their technique and artistry in the pose and light. I hope that you'll see that I'm sort of right in this point. And is not that my character is completely blank, (in fact is sort of bluish, has a sex, is pretty cocky, of certain age, etc.)
Don't think by any of this that I don't appreciate your critique as one of the best that I've recived, and please give me more of this kind.
-Matt Smith:
Don't forget that this are the rules they give for judging:
ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?
--But don't worry, in any case it wouldn't affect my decision.

Lennon - Matt Smith's entry is fine, and is far from being unfinished. Colour or black and white isn't a problem and the medium is good too. :)
On that note, generally, this isn't a digital art challenge, it's open media. However you think you can best express what your intent is, is fine with ChOW! If you want to stick egg cartons on corrugated cardboard and colour it with crayola crayons that's good too. As long as the character is clear! :)
Edit: Having said that, I can't guarantee how many votes you'd get! ;)
Have an excellent Tuesday!

thanks, i actually think some of my work is still pretty loose but thanks. i often use an overlay layer at the end to punch out the values and colors... using a soft brush on a masked layer will really bring an image to life :P other then that i use 2 main brushes a squished (vertically) round brush for painting perspective, hard edge, and another basic round hard edge... the rest i leave to my wacom and pen pressure... no big secrets really... oh and i like to paint at 100% opacity as anything less requires a lot of repainting of the same area which to me makes an image look dirty (and just takes too long lol)
So this week i'm not disqualified ,cool ;)
