ROUND #160 :: Erica, Zombie-Slayer

DESCRIPTION

ERICA, ZOMBIE-SLAYER

Erica's life was quite fine before, thank-you-very-much. She had just accepted a marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Robert, landed herself a nice job with a nicer paycheck and an apartment downtown.

Now Robert is a flesh-eating zombie, the entire world in in panic and Erica has to fight for survival just to make it day-to-day.

Let's just say, Erica is one angry little lady.

Notes:
- Near future, zombie apocalypse
- Erica is around 30 years old
- Zombie boyfriend is optional. ;]

Please double check posting guidelines!

------------

ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?

--------------------

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/ChowPics/frame.jpg
:right: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
:right: SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:
Chow##_Nickname
example: "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg"

THE REST IS EASY:
1: No comments before poll is set. They WILL be deleted with utmost malice and petty grumbling. >:{
2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
3: Good luck to all.

Please review these helpful reminders if you have not done so already.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR COPYRIGHT INFORMATION UNDER THE IMAGE IN THE FINAL BURNING THREAD SO I DON'T HAVE TO HUNT YOU DOWN LATER!

---

Quick Check: Have You Submitted Your Chow Properly?

- is it named correctly? (ie, "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg")
- has it been uploaded using the attachment editor?
- have you also uploaded or linked to your wips?
- have you followed the brief?

Good luck!

Signs of clouded pupils, foaming mouth and uncontrollable sways of physical aggression lead Erica to believe Robert has the virus a TV warning is talking about. She takes the action in disarming the infected in a BLOND fashion following the TV suggestion of how to kill zombies quickly. The main question that many should ask "but was Robert really infected? Looks like he is experiencing hell of a pain ride". Ahh... those blonds...

This is the origins of Erica the Zombie Slayer. After killing her fiance there is no hope left in her. She is yet to become the biggest threat to the zombie nation!

Nice work everyone!

This has been my first chow for a long time, really good fun to get back into it again. Couldn't pass up this topic. Initially, I had grand plans for my entry. Then, suddenly it was 5AM and I hadn't started it yet - so I had to choose between sleep or knocking out a sketch. I chose the latter. Didn't have enough time to even paint a zombie - sniff.

PLEASE NOTE:

Erica is going to be huge. We are already well over 50 entries. The poll can only be limited to 50, so there WILL be cuts. We tried going beyond 50 for the Absinth Fairy and the poll screwed up. There is something in the system that won’t allow polls over 50, and having once split it into two threads with other problems we won’t be doing that either. Bear this in mind. This means the ‘quality’ rule may have to be brought in which is something I don’t like doing.

I knew right away with this I wanted to contrast traditional feminine clues with dark weapons, grime and blood - like her boyfriend started turning at the wedding ceremony - and she went through complete hell getting to this place - thought about putting on a bridal veil - but liked this better.

So, yeah- Sawed off shotguns, because we all know that is the weapon of choice when fighting the undead :) Really like playing with the atmosphere -

As far as process, did a sketch from my mind. blocked out black and white values and started painting - spent a lot of time on the weapons - Couldn't get started till yesterday - been pretty much at it since - Really amazing entries - as per usual! - what a great exercise. Any and all feedback on how to improve is greatly appreciated.

I am pretty happy with it - the lighting and pose could be a little more dynamic - I never know how much to go standard front view or a more action oriented pose, and wish I had time to paint the boyfriend. Kind of hard for me to see right now - been staring at too long.

Great Job Everyone!

There's going to be a slight delay in posting the poll. I'm on my own tonight, and the PC just crashed! Joy! I closed the poll an hour or so early as it's late here in the UK, which was unfair on those who expected it to close at 10 UK time, 5 EST. So those final submissions will be considered, but it also means I'll have to re-jig who's in and who's out.

Thank for your patience! And no further posts here till the poll is up, then those who are cut can tear me a new one...

Now because this was such a popular ChOW we have had to make strict cuts. These cuts are based on following the brief, naming conventions and quality. I’ve said I don’t like making cuts, but because of limit on submissions we’ve had no choice. This is something we’re working on, but for now that’s the way it is. If those cut would like personal critiques, please feel free to email one of the ChOW organisers.

Thank you.

John Isaacson – As a character piece this doesn’t really work. Her face is totally obscured, and we're confused as to certain elements in the image.

Blau – This is full of energy and life, but there are some anatomy issues going on, particularly with the positioning of the head and the torso, but you were really close!

Hunkulus – This is a fun image, but the anatomy looks awkward rather than stylised. And she really doesn’t look 30.

Taimic – Sorry, but incorrectly named.

Jamesy – Nicely done, but she’s a child. Not 30!

Reymus – Incorrectly named. Sorry.

Sunroamer – Once again, wrong naming convention.

Missile – You’ve completely obscured her face. Maybe a second image showing it would have been appropriate. :)

Elliste – We were in two minds over yours, but there is so much obscured here by heavy shadow that as character piece it suffers.

Chance – We like it but this does feel rushed. The expression on the girl is fun, but with a bit more time it could have been much sharper.

Garth Cochrane – Garth, sorry, but wrong naming convention.

Tydal – A little rushed maybe. I like the composition with the back light, but I reckon a little more effort could have given us a better depth of character.

NZ0B1 – Anatomy again, but this twist here is really awkward, but I love the concept behind it.

Thadeus – Another I was in two minds about. We’re cutting this based on anatomy and character. Her pose is awkward and I think you could have done a bit more with expression.

MJAlcazar – I love your work but this isn’t your strongest piece. The anatomy is difficult in the pose, and I would really have loved to see more in her expression; a bit of attitude.

Dawnusllaw – You made the mistake of suggesting you might be cut anyway. :) But I like yours, and it came down to you or AngelintheUK, so Angel won only on the fact she looks more appropriate to her age.

Poshspice – Not really a zombie killer.

OK... I'm off to bed!

Bugger. I did ask if the helmet would be allowed but nobody replied. =(

Anyway my votes go to Pixeltuner: Most eye-catching image to me, despite the relatively normal clothing it captures a nice feeling for the character that is both a little insane and violent, and a little bit silly. Wonderful lighting too. & Darklogik: Felt this was the most unique character design. Subtly a little futuristic, a nice unconventional weapon, good image overall.

bangalore_mokey: Thanks for your advice on my image. Your image fits the brief very well. In particular, I like the background. I also like that you didn't draw her as some post-apocalyptic punk warrior. She can fight zombies without degenerating into a cliche. Yay!

emerging: Looove her face/expression. The running mascara adds loads of drama to the piece (along with the terrific lighting). Also, you and I both seem to have a weakness for girls in panties. :)

Chance: It seems a bit unfinished. Empty maybe. Flat colors are okay if that's your style, but I would have liked to see a more detailed background. You had the right idea with the zombies in the window. Also, her fiancee's corpse looks awesome like that!

Migsta: Great colors and movement. It seems like the zombies are drawn in a different style than Erica though... It's not a big deal. Still looks great.

Tommoy: Love the wedding dress idea. She looks pissed. The colors are great and the lighting is awesome. She does look like she's about to fall out of her top any second now (in fact, it looks like she already did, hehehe). But I won't complain. ;)

Pahavasa: Like the black and white. You've got some interesting textures details in there. Really neat!

Ghostbrush: Love the way you handled her hair and tattered dress. It really adds a lot to this image. The glowing zombie eyes really bring this to a whole new level. That looks way creepy. What technique did you use? Color dodge or something?

squidmonk3j: I already told you in the chatroom how much I like your piece, even if she is a bit stiff. The zombie and the colors are my favorite bits. <3

Sekino: Thanks for your help on my piece earlier. Yours is totally cute. Like something right out of a magazine. A lot of movement. I love the bg and the wine glass (hahaha, it took me a minute to even notice it).

Grandmassa Mr. Spect: You're so sweet. Always encouraging others. Thank you for the sweet comment you made about my image. It made me feel much less insecure about myself. As for yours, I looove the style. The rough brushwork looks totally pro, and the colors are dead on. Haha, is she stabbing him with a fork? That's hilarious!

darklogik: The street sign is brilliant, and very well painted. Some people might say she looks a bit young, but living in OC, I've seen lots of women older than her in a similar outfit with a similar face. I think you nailed it. :D

Sulk_Sal: Oooh, neat style you've got. Love the bg in particular. And her thick lips. I love thick lips. :)

Phuzion: Colors, design, and mood are all terrific. Plus I love a girl in a scarf. She actually looks JUST like my mom, which is a bit unsettling. Hehehe.

John_Isaacson: Seems a bit unfinished. I like where it's going, but right now the gun is more detailed than anything else. I would have loved to see her face. Her outfit is really cool, though.

Marcusthebarbarian: I really like the setting and her attitude. I also dig that she's a little chubby and homely. It gives her loads of character.

Meon: I dunno if I've seen your work before. I really love her. She looks so dignified and a little peeved about her life right now. One of the best faces in the competition, for sure.

Hunkulus: I like the intensity and the blood. Reminds me of when Tarantino goes overboard with putting sprays of blood in his movies. I'm not sure the primary colors are all working together though...

lkjhgfdsa: Very pretty colors. I think you nailed the design of the character too. Not much else to say. Good job!!

Auren: Okay, I love the angle. Was it hard? I like the fact that the colors are subtle, but very effective. I'm a sucker for that sort of thing.

quantumrat: Love the muted palette and the splash of red. Her gun in particular is awesome. The bg seems a little empty. Why'd you crop it so far over? (just curious)

NickTrip: Yay! More girls in a t-shirt and panties. I will never get tired of that combination. She looks like she's gonna kick some serious ass. Very intense.

Sidharth_Chaturvedi: Simple, effective, and very pretty. I have a feeling some people will think she's young looking, but I think she looks totally fine. Wonderful job.

Taimic: Neat style. I love the heavy black and white paired with just a bit of flash and blood colors.

Jamesy: Oh my lord she is adooorable!! I don't care that she looks young. I love her. <3 I have her outfit too. :)

Cosmitron: It's all already been said. This looks great. The colors and the details are terrific.

artofinca: Very emotional and pretty. It's a little hard to see the actual character, but it still makes for a really pretty painting.

Crowsrock: Great expression. The composition is a little straight-forward, but that's standard in character design. I think the green, blue, and yellow seem like they clash a bit. I'd tone down one or two of them maybe... Otherwise, great!

Phaethon: She looks bad ass. Totally bad ass. I just realized we both gave our zombies reddish glowing eyes. Great minds, eh? Anyway, the dynamic pose and intense expression really make this a great drawing.

Poshspice: I seriously just don't know how you do it. Your WIPS and your final are all just one big awesome-overload.

hungryan: Too funny! This is adorable. I like the graphic-style too.

Reymus: I like the angle, and her pet zombie. :D Her mohawk seems a little off-kilter at that angle, but maybe it's my imagination...

Arthemis IX: So pretty. Love her expression and the gritty background with all the zombies. Her outfit is one of my favorites in this whole competition.

englishduke: Haha. This one is pretty cute. I crack up just looking at her fiancee/zombie. :P

nightblue: Love the way she looks. Her pose and colors are really pretty. And don't ask me why but that zombie in the very bg keeps drawing my eye. I love the way he looks just lying all limp like that.

icemoon: Great rendering on her clothing and the bits of zombie goo. The overall design is really pretty, with just a touch of gore. I like it!!

SunRoamer: Yours is the creepiest piece here. Her expression and the ironing board. Ooh boy, gives me the willies. Great job.

S.C. Watson: Thank you for all your help with my image. I tried, I really did. Oh well. Yours looks totally epic. The background colors and the detail on the zombies keep drawing my eyes. I love the little joke with Robert and his heart. Haha. Priceless...

Missile: Very interesting design. Reminds me of... Um, Grindhouse I think it was called. I see you went through a lot of different ideas for this, I'm surprised you even had time to finish! :P

elliste: Great idea, I love the pose. It seems a bit messy, I think if you had polished her face and his face a tad more it would have been nice. Still looks good though!

AvisNocturna: Preeeettty. Such amazingly beautiful colors. She looks like a cute french girl. I love it to bits!!

Tydal: I like the dark colors and the rim lighting. The zombies in the foreground seem a tad sloppy, but maybe that was intentional?

Angel_Intheuk: Your style took a few minutes to grow on me, but I really like it. The colors and lines work well with your brushstrokes. Great job!

blau: Lots of movement in this one. Love her red hair against the greenish outfit. She looks like she *might* fall over though. Maybe.

DIMAGYAN: I can tell this one will do really well. It looks totally cute.

Rodimus: Wow, I love the mood and setting. This seems really epic, like it's right out of a movie. Terrific!

MJ_Alcazar: Yay! You finished this time!! Looove the subtle colors, and you did a beautiful job with the face. You're getting really good, really fast!

Pierropod: Oh, I like her design. I also like how you made her crouching from a horde of zombies. I can tell any minute now she's going to jump out and shoot the hell out of them :D

Ostrander: Really well painted. She is enjoying herself waaaay too much. Remind me not to piss her off. D:

dawnusllaw: Is this in photoshop or graphite? It looks really pretty, I love your shading technique.

Beastmaster_Fred: Love the composition and poses. The gritty texture looks great also.

JailHouseRock2: Oh my gosh, what a cute style! No crits, this is just really neat looking.

Desmayado: Love her outfit and the colors. Her weapons look awesome too.

Matt Smith: Smooth and gorgeous. She looks perfect.

Pixeltuner: You always draw such pretty hair. I love the lighting and the dude on fire in the bg. Ha! That's great.

dirkvandulmen: She looks quite sassy. She fits the brief perfectly too. Good job!

NZOB1: I like where you were going with this! The pose looks a little bitter in the sketch I think. But still good. :)

revenebo: The anatomy is a little off, but I wouldn't have noticed if you didn't say so. The painting, however, is totally great!

Matthew_Campbell: Very classy and simple. I love your style. It doesn't scream "zombie slayer" to me. She could easily be an assassin or bank robber or something. But who cares, she's beautiful!

Ranarh: I really like her design. Her lips don't seem to quite sit on her face right, but otherwise she looks great. Good job!

ThaDeus: Veeery pretty. I love her little weapon-thingy. Haha. She sure did a number on that zombie dude.

KuGu: What a tough angle to take on. You really pulled it off well. Your image looks totally great!

Garth_Cochrane: She looks pissed, but still totally adorable. The zombies in the foreground look really well painted too.

leuparaleu: I like the sun dress paired with the leather boots and jackets. It works really well for the character.

PuppyKitten: You fail at life. I hope you die.

CYC: Very moody atmosphere. Terrific. I wish I could paint a bg like that.

openanewworld: Must have taken forever. Great job!! I love the faces of the zombies.

ianthegeek: Very cute idea. I love the attention to detail. I think it could have been rendered a bit more cleanly in areas, but you probably ran out of time just like the rest of us. Haha. Good job.

Culture_Vulture: Really pretty image. Did you use a ref? I'd love to see it... The girl is quite cute.

sketchius: Lots of people making red-heads this round. I think you did a nice job with the colors and a great job with the texture in this. Thanks for posting. :)

I voted for Darklogic and S.C. Watson ( A little Ellen Ripley perhaps?). Markus' piece was equally good, I could see this little babushka Erica sloughing down some St. Petersburg sewer blasting zombies in the face :).

I wish I had paid attention to my files, here I am looking at the one I put up named Erica.jpg and then right next to it Chow160_reymus.jpg. It's a lesson.

Ghostbrush: solid entry, great action sequence and love the palette you’ve adopted for this piece.
ArthemisIX: great take on Erica, love the outfit, nice alleyway sequence too, strong brooding atmosphere you got happening here.
Darklogic: love the rendering detail you’ve got on Erica, and a well set environment to boot :p
Desmayado: wow, that’s one big ass axe! Nice manga anime style you got happening.
Hungryan: heheh, cool illustrative style on Erica, reminds me alittle of Shane Glines style.
Matt Smith: she looks like one badass chickita, lovely rendering style you’ve got
Matthew Campbell: Wow she looks hot, but she looks like she belongs in a james bond flick, hubba hubba. Love your style man, sweet as.
Meon: nice stylization on this one, maybe some blood splatter on the car or on her clothes to mess things up alittle, afterall it is the zombie apocalypse.
Phuzion: hahaha, coffee in one hand, bat in the other, very smhick!... and love the leather pants.
Pixelturner: love the chaos you got happening in this scene, maybe holding a bat instead of an umbrella would’ve been a better choice. None the less, love your rendering style mate.
Puppykitten: wow, love the soft pastel rendering style of yours. Def got my vote. Nice snappy action sequence too.
Renarh: Her head seems to be cropped off in the final piece, which makes for awkward framing. Maybe should’ve lowered the shot a little to get her fully in shot, or painted extra on top. Nice take on Erica though.
Sidharth Charturedi: Big back pack, heheh, and really cool outfit on character.
Sulk-Sal: Sweet stylization for this piece, maybe ramping up the colours alittle in the sky would’ve really popped this piece. Nice entry.
Artofinca: lovely texture work on the bg, and a nice strong mood piece too, can tell she’s completely alone.
Openaneworld: Dang Herman, nice one mate, love the amount of chaos you managed to squeeze into this piece. Strong solid composition too, very swish man :D

Think i voted like crazy for this round... anyhoo will see if i get time later to give more feedback. Awesome round peeps.

man, i'm just glad i got to the poll, thanks for the votes so far. i already beat my 3 vote record, woo hoo!

i voted for-

KUGU- Definitely a zombie slayer! i like the utility belt, feels like it's something someone would really put together. the scissors made me lol.

Openanewworld- what i see when i think "erica, zombie slayer", my idea on steroids. so much great detail as well,

markusthebarbarian- completely original and totally believable.

Dimagyan- i just think this is a really fun concept, and i can imaging seeing this character in action. and that bird is Great!

and i almost voted for a couple more but i wanted to narrow it down. so, special mention to Phizion, Darklogic, Desmayado, and matt smith.

and there were a few that just didn't say zombie slayer at all, just a chick with a gun, or chick in underwear with a gun.

Cosmitron, it's an awesome painting, but it's not what i see when i think of a zombie slayer. it's just a lady that had to kill her zombie fiance to save her life. my idea is that Erica actively hunts and slays zombies. she's not just a survivor. sorry to pick on you, looks like you'll win anyway.

ps- sorry if i spelled any of your usernames wrong, read them off your submissions.

Voted for
Grandmassa Mr. Spect, thats a great scene, nice lights and colors and all, and the raw finishing adds a good mood
Cosmitron, the best illustration, even from the earlier lines :D
Rodimus25, that's the kind of action and attitude that I was looking for
Beastmaster Fred, has the best zombie, and its a very good image overall (if you ignore the text... which I do)

Blau – This is full of energy and life, but there are some anatomy issues going on, particularly with the positioning of the head and the torso, but you were really close!
Thanks for the crit, it helps more than going to the poll :D

Hmm, well there are several pics (including mine) that went for another interpretation, of an earlier erica, just after the zombies attack, before she becomes the full geared and seasoned slayer. I think its just as valid.

you're right, it's totally valid, just not what i was looking for personally.

just trying to define why i voted for who i voted for.

i just think that to portray the character, it should be obvious that she's a slayer. you could technically draw Erica the day before the zombie apocalypse if you wanted.

but that's just my interpretation of the character and what she should be. again, sorry to be specifically calling out Cosmitron.

Not the same. You cant be a zombie-slayer if there are no zombies. I guess we disagree on what being a slayer entails. It doesn't really matter, its about getting better and having fun anyway :D

Cosmitron, Sekino, and Demigyan all had that little something extra that made them my favourites. In Sekino's piece, I think it's the surprised look on the decapitated zombie's head. Demigyan: loved the brain speech bubble. Cosmitron has a great combination of character and matching environment. (I know this isn't enviro of the week, but I like it when characters seem to fit their environs.)

Vote for a couple of other folks too: Puppykitten's tones knock me out. Liked the non-conventional style of hungryan (?) and DarkLogic's (?) blood soaked sign also stood out.

Thats a nice round!

I voted for Arthemis, DESMAYADO, Phuzion, ostrander, cosmitron

Ghost brush: i like the mood but she is not a zombie slayer to me, she seems casual killer.

Arthemis: she is caring very hand to fight kind of tools which suggests that she slays them very closely, but her wardrobe seems to clean. good job though. voted for you

Darklogik: nice illustration.

DESMAYADO: I liked the 2d feel kind of vibe from this, she can join team fortress if they want to slay zombies. voted for you

Hungryan: Humor is good, but you need to push your styling. I mean her legs are stiff to me. you need more flow in your composition.

Matt Smith: Nice rendering, she seems too clean and generic. But i loved your design from finish point of view.

Mather campbell: Her legs seems broken and she is too clean for zombie slayer.

Meon: Congrats on getting in poll, use ref next time. that's painful to bend her ankle like that.

Phuzion: hey ma man, cool stuff shes is chill, voted for you

Pixel tuner: Great stuff, entertaining.

Puppykitten, innocent kills the cat, and shes is cute. very nice illustration.

Ranarth: Congrats on getting in poll, her knee bend is strange!

sidharth chaturvedi: her back pack seems too heavy for her to carry and kill the zombies. thats my thought. good job:)

Skull-sal: I think she is missing a sharp highlight which can define her silhouette even more, good job :)

artofinca: "oh what i have done this can't be happening" is she saying this? I liked the different point of view you did from others of just slaying. good job.

openanewworld: she is as happy as a pig in the mud. born to slay, great great stuff.

pierropod: Congrats on getting in poll, don't make muscles too hard.

quantumrat: her weapon seems good , its very hard to run with that kind of clad(skirt?) on her legs. she might get in trouble.

angle intheuk: midget? if not then her head is too big with proportions of her body.

Englishduke: its hard to get the topic from your illustration.

jailhouserock2: hey the zombies are down there, where is she looking hello? may be some more zombie out the, okay i got it. good job.

CYC: Ouu, determined!!

emerging: i liked the humor.

Markusthebarbarian: she looks like a guy to me. wheres the erica?

ostrander: zombie lol you loved this topic for sure? awesome illustration! voted for you!

aquidmonk3j: i can't say she is a zombie slayer. may be its just me!

LKJHGFDSA: I liked your alias name. "LKJHGFDSA".

migsta: your camera angle is to high for such a moment.its not very dynamic as the moment you captured.

Avisnocturna: french? polka dots? i liked the stage setting.

revenebo: acrobat that's awesome.

beastmasterfred: quite sell-able.:)

cosmitron: your are the winner i am for sure! that's awesome and different! congrats. voted for you!

Lanthegeek: Congrats on getting in poll, odd proportions for a female figure.

icemoon: nice alias name. colors are nice.

Kugu: good job! her right legs seems too bulky.

nick trip: Congrats on getting in poll.

Phaethon: Congrats on getting in poll.

Auren: i really liked the wardrobe.

Rodimus: kind of metal gear solid.

tommoy: she can really make a nice cast for a movie. zombie slayer bride the erica.

sekino: with such a dynamic pose she is still as stiff as the letter L. i like the humor though.

grandmassamrspect: what's so dark on her underwear? that's scary.

bangaloremonkey: good job, i liked the passenger kind of feeling to her.

crowsrock: nice weapon, she needs a feminism twist to her torso though, just a bit.

dimagyan: her side kick rocks.

dirkvandulmen: nice expression.

leuparaleu: generic!

pahavasa: hmm, blade's sister?

nightblue: her pose suggest that she is going to cut there head and there heads are already cut, bit confusing to me. good job though. congrats.

Really nice work everyone,

I voted for
Pixeltuner : Really nice, I like the mood in it :)
Openanewworld : I think it's my favorite :)
BeastmasterFred : Really nice composition, lights, and colors, great job !

Well they were other really nice entries too :

Cosmitron : Hmmm... a lot to say, actually it's an awesome illustration, nice angle, nice brushwork, nice lights... in fact everything so well done ! (then why didn't I voted ?!)
I didn't voted because she's suppose to be angry (that's why she's a zombie slayer right ?) and in your work I feel like she's scared, she looks more like a prey rather than a slayer. I dont know if you understand what I mean ? anyway wonderfull work !

Ostrander : Well she looks really angry, actually mad, I don't know why I didn't voted for you ?! Posh is it possible to add my vote for ostrander ?

Now to answer to the comment of sony :

I dont know, really, I just wrote a comment yesterday night in the other thread, and I was trying to explain that not all the people in the world are "pretty", I mean havent you seen obese people getting married, or having a job ?!?
Comon man go outside take a walk, and tell me, don't you see women that scares you more that some men, or some men looking like women ?
Or maybe a fat women cant get a marriage proposal, or even get a job ?! (I think everyone is going to think I'm a fat guy that can't even walk, haha !)

I think many off us live too much in the TV/Game world, where everything is actually sooo fake ! Heroes are attrative, Vilains are ugly !
I think our job is to try to do something different, and to try to get out of the cliché.
Well anyway, that was what I had in mind :) sorry for my bad english... :S

Cosmitron. Your submission is so good, on reflection. I love everything about it, the smallest things in the picture add so much. Just the fact she is wearing a KISS t-shirt. Adds so much humour (for me) and the scratched off slayer sticker. Absolute gold, loving your piece!

Cosmitron

I didn't noticed it was "angry Erika slayer". Next time I'll read the character specifications more carefully ;)
Seriously my purpose was, things are not always what they seem. But I'm torn apart. If I did it straight as the clichés I had in mind wouldn't it be too much er.. cliché? on the other side, If I hadn't done it cliché wouldn't I missed the job?
All in all, it's been a great pleasure doing it, cliché or not, and every comment is priceless.

Anyway:
Desmayado>Nothing but the right thing. Couldn't resist.
Hungryan>what a snob! Love it. Couldn't resist.
Matthew Campbell>there's something so moody in your Erica. Ok she could also be a russian agent double killer. Anyway, I liked it.
Phuzion>That's a 30 year old girl. Couldn't resist.
PuppyKitten>Couldn't resist 16 or 30. Panties appeal I guess. But I'm just too stupid to hit the blank square for vote. When I realized it was far too late.
Openanewworld> isn't it obvious?
Englishduke> It's still makes me laugh. Could NOT resist.
Cyc>well that's it.
Markusthebarbarian>Well OK. She looks angry enough for a vote. :D
Kugu> I just love the dressing story telling.
Tommoy> Too bad I'm a noob. I just missed your post! You should have my vote :(
bangalore_monkey>that's it.
Dimagyan>aaaah! The 80's.
Poshspice> You should have had my vote. twice.
ThaDeus> Where the F is your post?!!

Quote from PuppyKitten - [Angel_Intheuk: Your style took a few minutes to grow on me, but I really like it. The colors and lines work well with your brushstrokes. Great job!] - Thank you very much - I realise I have a bit of wierd style, still experimenting and trying to refine it, but your comment gives me hope :)

Quote from Sony - [angle intheuk: midget? if not then her head is too big with proportions of her body.] - yeah I know, I did resize her head and then opened up the wrong line work and coloured that one in, didn't realise til I finished...anyway the model was my mate Erica who is a bit of a midget :D (well 5' exact so not quite :P)

Thanks for comments - another enjoyable round, learned so much again and I feel honoured to have made the cut :)

I voted for way too many:
Arthemis: Great Concept man, brilliantly executed and love her knife belt. I did think though that her right foot had been bitten off, it's not too obvious at first it's her shoe, that's the only crit, nice work all round!

Icemoon: Funny and smart! I really love her outfit and you do great gore!

Bangalore: Loved the 70's grindhouse poster feel and her expression is funny, as well as the hand on the bat..excellent

JailhouseRock2: I really like the pose in this one and your rendering is nice - good bit of action there.

Sekino: Love it! it's so different - I think everything about it is slick, and the graphics on her leg is a nice touch

openanewworld: Excellent! totally Frank Frazetta - love it! your line art is gorgeous too, couldn't take my eyes off it.

lkjhgfdsa: I like the mood - the pose is dramatic without being over done and she looks like she'd kick some ass..she also looks familiar but can't put my finger on it.

Cosmitron: Brilliant - you nailed it, couldn't not vote for you. the atmosphere is spot on, feels creepy but realistic and I love the little details in the foreground. Her expression is probably what I'd look like if I was in that situation, despair mixed with 'what the F just happened?'

Pixeltuner: Love the tense action going on here, liked it from the first sketch - her colour coordination is sharp! :) nice job

Desmayado: Great Stylization - she totally fits the executive/pissed off/now I kill zombies quota for me

Dirkvandulman: Total fan of your style - the details are so cool and well drawn + I like her new facial expression

CYC: Glad you made it in...Great job! The atmosphere is just dripping with menace, looks like a still from a film/movie.

Puppykitten: Gorgeous style as always :D everything looks quite calm because of the grey which contrasts nicely with the action..

didn't make it but would have voted:
Thadeus: Love the style - her weapon is so cool, I had a total blank on homemade weaponry and then saw yours and wish I'd thought of it :) - she could have done with looking more peed of though.

poshspice: I immediately thought of Fergie from Planet Terror! - she looked more exec with the glasses on I think I prefer that version. But still you rock!

Angelintheuk: I did think though that her right foot had been bitten off, it's not too obvious at first it's her shoe

Haha you know I tried to fix that but I guess it still wasn't clear enough :) Thanks for the vote though!

My vote went to Cosmitron, the perspective and atmosphere is so fresh and original, it really stands out. I like the fact that there is no bright red blood anywhere, unlike in most of the other drawings (including my own) :P

GhostBrush - I like this as a paiting - intense energy - I have to bend my mind a bit to see how the gun kicking and her turning results in that pose - but the diagnals make for interesting composition and the hair is insane.

Artemis IX - that is awesome - I would go see that movie. Really nice paint - enviro. Pretty girl!

Mathew Cambell - Nice job. subtle, classy approach.

Puppy Kitten - Thanks for taking the time to comment! Yeah - I always love your girls. Ever hear Hanna Hukkelberg? Her voice reminds me of your style for some reason. so yeah, the pose really adds to the composition - your girls are so darn cute! Love the way you render and your comic proportions.

Sulk-Sal - Nice comic approach. That would make an awesome cartoon.

Cosmitron - nice! Homemaker by day... - Exploitive, but in a good way! Great perspective and rendering.

Is blood bad? I got this hit on the forum before - From the beginning my image was a blood splatterd white dress. Is it considered gimicky?

Thanks for those that voted for me. Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

My thought on this a pulp / Grindhouse kind of thing.

OK, I first started checking boxes like crazy.
Then I decided I would restrict my vote to only one.
I voted DarkLogic for the originality and fun of the character.
But there are many other entries I love - told so in the wip thread.

I wish I had time to look up Irene Gallo's comments regarding blood.

Basically, it depends on what you're doing, I think. If you're doing a horror piece, and catering to that market, then you're going to use a lot more blood than if you're aiming for your standard illustration.

The best thing to do is use it in moderation. You can certainly insinuate that there's blood, but it doesn't need to be splattered all over the walls.

I'd take a look at people like Todd Lockwood, Donato, and others to see how they handle similar situations.

I will look them up!

Blood is not horror - I get that, but sometimes hard to avoid - there so much potential for graphic impact. Makes much more sense now...

Thank you, that helped much!

great fun. so many talented pple! makes me wonder why the hell i didnt join this weekly poll earlier! The only thing i guess id have to say is dont get offended if you dont get too many votes.. main point of these exercises are not to beat others, but to beat yourself! If you know you put your 100% out or at least close to that you know you succeeded. Although personally i also wish more pple looked at the meaning/idea/composition rather than just technical execution. There are some quite interesting pieces that were neglected. But i guess i want to address those pple and make sure they still continue doing what they are doing because its easy to fall off track after not getting too many votes and start trying to copy some pro artist losing your own style and ideas. Thanks again for all this great work! Hope all of you are doing CHOW 161 CITY :P

Sorry I don't have a lot of time for writing crits this week, but here were my votes:

Matt Smith- Love the simplicity and cleanliness of it.

Phuzion- She very much looks like some urban woman, totally cool with zombie apocalypse as long as she has her daily brew.

JailHouseRock2- I voted mostly for the 'normal woman' Erikas. Yours looks appropriately tossed into some zombie-crisis out of the blue and I dig the layout.

Cosmitron- Aside from the fact that it's flawless, I like how gentle and muted the colours are. There is a definite sense of crisis yet not the usual 'over-the-top' zombie flick look.

Bangalore-Monkey- It has this campy zombie movie poster layout and she looks like a total government office-worker, SUV-driving woman ;)

Dimagyan- I wanted to vote but must have unchecked it by mistake; I just noticed... Sorry it's so late to find out :( The character is so clean and you nailed the 80's feel (the cute zombie bird doesn't hurt either).

Pahavasa- You got my vote for giving me visions of Pam Grier slashing her way through a zombie crowd to do groceries.

So many great entries! Kudos to everyone :)

My votes go to:

Cosmitron: My favourite piece here! I really love the perspective and the amount of detail in the whole piece. I also like how she seems like a normal woman thrown into this situation. Awesome work!

Tommoy: Great scene as a whole. I like how she's kicking zombie ass in her wedding dress with a cross :)

dirkvandulman: Once again, another great character design with a great pose and expression. Like zombie boyfriend and blood effects too.

All in all I think this round produced some really great pieces of work! Great round everyone!

Poshspice loving the attitude your female has. That strong shadows to her left is very effective. Great picture indeed.
