Round #145

Topic:
Comical Chimera!

Creature Description: Comical Chimera-- I must admit, the inspiration for this week's topic is a little odd. Today I woke up from my daily nap with the words "Comical Chimera" on my lips. Literally. I'm not particularly good at dream analysis, and I have absolutely no idea where the notion came from. But I think it's rather appropriate that such a strange, mixed up creature should be inspired by dreaming.

The classical Chimera of Greek myth is a strange beast made up of parts of a lion, a goat and a serpent. Sometimes they are depicted with large bat-wings. But, for this week, you're going to design an entirely new Chimera out of three different animals, and hopefully make it funny.

For this round I think it is fine to dispense with the whole 'could it really exist in the natural world' idea. Chimeras are dreamy, magical, surrealist kinds of creature. Reason is sort of beside the point.

Have fun with it!

Deadline:
Wednesday, 3 June 2009

Finals go here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=159028

note: The deadline won't be EXACTLY after a week...it can last up to 24 hours more, i am human and have to work also, you know ;)

Here's the Wiki article on the classical Chimera so you can get an idea of what they are like:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimera_(mythology)

That bronze sculpture in the article is one of my all time favorites.

So remember, you're designing an all new (and funny) Chimera out of three different animals. Bunny, turtle, and giraffe. Gorilla, vulture and horse. Whatever you like!

How close to the original three animals that we choose does our chimera have to be? Life if I were to do an elephant, octopus, mouse, would it have to be made strickly from parts of those animals or could I invent some new features as well?

Oh, btw, I've been watching COW for a little bit and I think I want to start participating.

Michael Jaecks
May 27th, 2009, 03:40 PM
I think at the very least your animal choices should be recognizable, but you shouldn't think of that as limiting. I'm open to letting people take this topic where they take it. But yeah, if you were to choose elephant, octopus and mouse, I'd like to be able to tell that from just looking....

I hope this is on-course. I'm so paranoid about messing up again on this site it's ridiculous. But, i hope to participate in all future COW's, least for the summer.

My creation so far is an Octopus/deer/wren. The little drawing in the bottom is what it looks like when defensive, all it's wacky tentacles flaring out. They'll be brightly colored.

I may push this farther, but i'm not sure how far if we're supposed to still recongnize it.http://i71.photobucket.com/albums/i141/Raydart/COW145wipwipjpg.jpg

This sounds fun!
Gonna give it a go!
My creatures usually end up looking comical whether I want them to or not- so this should work out good! :P

-so far I've got a vision of a cross between a giraffe, an octopus and a penguin! (a ger-octa-guin?)

Hope to get it sketched out tonight after work.

Hmm...towards the end of last year my friend was doing a project like this and looking for suggestions. Time to get back into that mindset...

Blonde_Bomber, looking good so far.

Not that I'm trying to jump on the octopus bandwagon or anything, but I can't get the idea of a Rhinoctopussy out of my head. I may have to go with that.

That's great! awesome name! -and it does sound promisingly comical! a rhino-cat-octopus? :)

...guess the idea of an octopus mixed with any other creature- well creature that walks on land anyway- seems pretty comical to me! Not sure why? But there you have it! :tihi:

This sounds like an awesome topic! Think I mite take a shot at this!

I'm thinking along the lines of a monkey/elephant/ostrich or maybe monkey/ostrich/leopard... hmmm..

See where it goes! Let the sketching begin :)

What do you think about this? Does it fit the COW rules? I don't know because I'm quite new here. I don't know if there can be this cartoon style but I think that the topic Comic Chimera allow this style.

Posting around her can be pretty intimidating and I've not done it much. Still, this topic looked like too much fun to pass up. :) Here's a sketch of my "Bullmingohuahua" (bull + flamingo +chihuahua) Actually, I can't claim full credit for the idea, I asked my husband to tell me what three animals would make the silliest combo, and this was his answer. Much giggling ensued as I sketched.

Sketchius, I like them all. My main critique would be that #3's bird parts don't exactly scream "owl" to me. It's just kind of a generic bird, which is cool, but I think if you wanted it to read as an owl, you would want to include something a little more iconic than wings, which every bird has. Think about the things that really define an owl. Big eyes, flat faces, the ability to turn their heads 180 degrees. If you could work in something like that, I would get a much better feel for it as an owl as opposed to any other bird.

Ephilli, your creature appears to have to pairs of hocks in it's hind legs. You can google bird skeletons to see what I mean. Also that kind of height difference in legs would put the front body under a lot of pressure, I think you could use the bull's heavy muscular build more to cover this up. :)

At first I wasn't going to attend this one 'cause I highly doubt I'd be able to produce anything comical. This isn't comical either, but I liked the idea and whipped this up in a couple of hours.

So here's my boar/chameleon/zebra -mix. His stripes are supposed to change colour as chameleons camouflage to their surroundings... too bad they only mostly cover his backside. I'll have to do some sketches with an actual background to show it properly.

Finally, some Rhinoctopussy WIPs. Basic sketches, and one of these lucky monstrosities will get the Photoshop treatment, probably starting tomorrow.

Sorry about the low contrast. That's just how it turns out when you sketch in a Col-Erase instead of using a black pencil like a normal person might.

Right now, I'm pretty happy with and could move on with #2 or #3, so any crit that helps me make a decision between those two would be very helpful.

I always feel a little nervous participating in these, but I'm gonna try to get over that :bashful:

I thought it would be interesting to use some prehistoric creatures, if that is okay (I don't believe it was specified that it had to be made of present-day creatures). Here is a rather unfortunate mix of Quetzalcoatlus, Tyrannosaurus, and Sabertooth Tiger. Hopefully I'll be able to finish in time.

LOL Good humor so far guys! :)

Wazbot great creature! not only is it comical looking but also dangerous!

Clochette looking good! Reminds me of the little squirrel guy from ice age for some reason? Very cool!

Here are my "flatulent ger-octa-guins" so far. Still working out the story a bit but basically they are a back-yard genetic experiment gone wrong- the long tongue of the giraffe part was to long for the little creature's mouths- and it's large ruminant digestive system grossly out weighed the other animal parts and caused the creatures to constantly have massive gas build up which caused explosive farts that the creatures later learned to adapt to use to launch themselves around to aid in mobility! -a stretch I know- but quite comical ... at least to me!:tihi:

tschahri Thanks so much for the input. Yeah, you are totally right, my guy has too many leg joints...I hadn't even noticed that. Ah well, since we are straying from the realm of reality and going for pure silliness, I think I'll leave him be. :)

Also, its true that your piggy isn't very comical...he's beautiful! Love the zebra pattern and the overall style, wow.

WIP-

Still early stages, nvm the BG for now, just wanted to upload something before finalizing.

Meushan Pig (main head)
African Spurred Tortoise (tail and shell)
Tree Kangaroo (main body)

It's been while, but I thought this one would be a fun COW to try, unfortunately I didn't look at the new COW till yesterday, so this was all done today. I Hope to finish before Wednesday.

Not to many entries this week, but they all look pretty creative and funny.

aight so i'm getting into this a tad late. however i've no need of sleep until after the due point, and if i don't get it at least to a point where i'm happy with it i won't post a final. from what i've seen these cow's are a great way to practice and improve, and i know i'm sorely in need of both, so here goes.

that being said; early stages of tigergiraffedog (which will have a beard and probably be rideable, i'm thinking something like a 'fancy' mount for some ethnic or royal parade showcase) all feedback welcome.

So, I've been a little slower on this than my initial plan. Here's my WIP so far with the original sketch overlaid so the detail I haven't gotten in place in Photoshop yet is at least somewhat visible. Looking around, I've clearly got my work cut out for me between now and tomorrow.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v215/TonyS37/rhinoctopussy_WIP.jpg

Arteater, I really like it so far. It's a shark, a cat(?) and what else?

Michael Morisse, I just got that the bear body was growing out of the chicken's neck. Previously, I thought the chicken body was big, chickeny thighs. Don't know what you might want to do about that, or, if I'm the only one who was confused, fixing it might not even be necessary. Now that I see the bear body coming out of the chicken's neck, though, I think it's hilarious. Great job.

Wazbot, I love it.

More work and more crits later. Apparently today there is such a thing as a free lunch!

This is really cool! I'm working on mine, I should have it uploaded later tonight.

So, the creature is allowed to have only 1 head, or does it have to have 3? That's something I'm a little confused about. The original has 3 and I wanted to be sure.

Faelice: Yeah COW´s are great ways to improve drawing in a fun way. Keep praticing.
Maybe I´m too late to advice you, but I really think you need (all we need) to look at references when drawing. Man, it can sound an obvious advice, but most of artist (I´m one) refuse to use photos because it looks like cheating. But isn´t!

Try to search a good photo for each animal you´ve to incorporate in the Chimera and copy it. Then, draw you own. It´ll help you to elaborate the volumes, anatomy, and characteristics of the animals. I think you have to push more of each creature in the actuall concept, because it doesn´t looks "bizzare" yet.

So. That´s it. Keep drawing.

There´s a lot of great entries, but I´ll point Michael Morisse, Arteater and Benu ones. Really dig that ones already.

Mine it´s simple "The Most Dangerous Creet in the World". :-p
Got a bad flu today and it gives a perfect idea for a Chimera.
