DESCRIPTION

ERICA, ZOMBIE-SLAYER

Erica's life was quite fine before, thank-you-very-much. She had just accepted a marriage proposal from her boyfriend, Robert, landed herself a nice job with a nicer paycheck and an apartment downtown.

Now Robert is a flesh-eating zombie, the entire world in in panic and Erica has to fight for survival just to make it day-to-day.

Let's just say, Erica is one angry little lady.

Cool idea! I'm a little sketchy about what is meant by 'near future' (is it a year? ten years? a hundred?) but it's probably best kept vague for a bit more freedom.

The initial plan in my head was of Erica tearfully fending off a zombified Robert buuut having noticed some of the discussions in the previous thread about design vs illustration and the fact the last CHOW I submitted was also a tearful girl and I don't want to gain the reputation of some guy who draws crying ladies all the time... I will try to go for a more 'slayer' deal.

Initial... well, second, idea. To tie into the fiancée story, I decided Erica was trying on wedding dresses when the zombie apocalypse took hold. Keeping the skin tone dark to contrast with the white dress. Not sure whether or not to put any actual zombies in or not.

The image feels a little static, not very much energy, fear or anger... think I need to find a good scenario where there is more action but the focus remains on Erica and the character design.

Edit: slightly more dynamic pose... I hope. >_>

I love the topic for this CHow.
Erika works at an office as a secretary, she doesn’t know about guns, she doesn’t know about weapons, she only knows Staplers.
I want the piece to look quite epic. With the city in ruins and set on fire on the back.
Erika coming up a mountain of zombies left incapacitated with a staple on their foreheads.
her expression, is furious, those wretched zombies just ruined her wedding plans.
This is going to be a really fun one.

Here's mine. I'm glad to have made a decent start this early on. The final should be pretty complex so i'll definitely need the time. Basically, Erica was minding her own business, getting ready for work when all of a sudden, ZOMBIES!!! Worried for both her own safety and for the safety of her fiance who had already left for work, she grabbed a photo of the two of them (so that she could ask people if they had seen him), and the gun from the top drawer and headed for the balcony of her new apartment.

The ground below will also be full of zombies, and there will be lots o' spattery gore. In case it isn't clear yet, she has just kicked the zombie in front of her and now her shoe is stuck in the side of it's head. Crits definitely welcome. Cheers :)

Avis, there's something heartwarming about a lady in a summer dress brandishing a shotgun. I like those ones the best - although the poses in the other sketches you've done where she appears to be sneaking up on (or hiding from?) something have a little more atmosphere to them. Maybe a combination of a couple of the ideas? Just a thought.

Decided to replace the knife with a sharpened mannequin leg (well, it was the only thing I could think of that might make for a weapon in a bridal shop). Playing around with lights and the whole scene but I don't want to get too carried away with the background... it's so tempting though.

Not really sure what to do with the bottom part of the dress. It was intended to be ripped with one side tucked into the boots, but it would look a little strange with this pose (image is cropped) and I don't want too much loose fabric in this cause it got a bit screwed up last time.

Going on the basis that Erica not only is pissed but has lost it a bit.
In a scramble to gear herself, she grabbed what ever sports equipment robert left in the closet after sadly have to be-head her him and keeping his hand with the ring in hopes to hold on to what she once had.

After surviving a few attacks she opted to upgrade her baseball bat to a dis-lodged parking meter which granted better bang for the buck :assspank:

keeping her newly bought arm-strapped mp3 player and iPhone for extra comforts.

Edit03: Tidied up the second one a bit, and she's a chav! And sketched out another. Used a bit of ref on the pose for this one, but only the legs really.

Edit04: Bit more random mark making. Not sure I'm going with this one yet. I still like the idea of just doing a character piece, rather than a full illustration.

Heh heh! I think there might be a few references to Sean of the Dead. It's not a problem if lots of people do it! I did a sketch with Zombies closing in on Erica in an alley using shadows to suggest the zombies. Then saw Kugu had done one, so I dropped it. Going to work it up with the zombies in shot instead.

I didn't knew about that movie! looks quite interesting!.I wanted to do some kind of office employee so the tie was the first thing in the concept(even she does no wear a tie) just to put something iconic...and the red was just a color choice for the general shemme and the realtion with blood(at least in our minds) :)

Thanks, I was a little worried someone else might have done it already but it doesn't seem so. The whole character is visible in the pic aside from a leg slightly obscured by a grabby zombie, I just cropped it down for that WIP because the rest of it is just messy lines at the moment. :)

Pixeltuner - i like the concept of the shopaholic turned zombie killer. i imagine it'll all come out in the wash, but it's hard to tell what the setting is here. she might fit better in a setting more familiar to her (before the apocalypse) character.

Arthemis IX- great costume, really unique! though i don't know if cutting weapons are that effective against your average zombie.

Markusthebarbarian- not quite the erica everyone else had in mind, but it's a great character none the less. i like her proportions.

dirkvandulmen - haha, a zombie slayer on the go. she doesn't really feel like someone fighting for survival, more a serial killer type.

Angel Intheuk- cool. without zombies, it appears she caused the destruction behind her. be careful to have the illo say what you want, then again it's just a WIP.

mechashiva- my favorite, just what i had in mind really. i love how pissed off she looks, more annoyed than terrified.

KuGu- great start. though i don't know if that's the best way to shocase a character concept.

blau- haha, dont f**k with her. nice sketches.

darknight- a daring pose. though you might want to refine the forshortening a little, her head's looking pretty small. also, why is she jumping out of a window, and where did she get two samurai swords?

KleeWyck- very post-apocalyptic. very differnent, and like it. right now here outfit looks a little to coordinated, maybe have it a bit mismatched, thrown together from various things.

AmbientSounds- this sketch makes me want to add sound effects. great acton!

darklogik - ha, the girly girl zombie slayer, i like the pink. i like the concept for the outfit, and i find it sad but probably true that she would think to take her iphone and ipod. one thing, could she really carry that meter around?

S.C. Watson- nice! i really like the rendering style. the anatomy on her legs seems off a little.

Poshspice- great stuff as always. i like the bit of shawn of the dead reference. these outfits though, mak her look a little too young.

DIMAGYAN - love it. her expression is great, and the bird cracks me up.

Moski- great so far, i like the rendering style on the weapons.

Garth Cochrane - ha, great minds think alike. i love the idea of the overturned vehicle.

MJ_Alcazar- simple, but effective. i like the outfit.

englishduke - great! love the idea. take another look at how she's sitting in the chair, to me it looks like she's suspended above the cushion. and i'm left wishing the husband was more zombified.

Hehe thanks. Well, it's not so much an excuse - I'll agree with you that realistically a lady dressed like that would most certainly not survive a zombie apocalypse! But... it is something of a stereotype within zombie horror to have women under-dressed for the scenario at hand to a ridiculous extent - particularly in video games, which is where most inspiration has come from. Jill Valentine heading into a zombie-laden city in a miniskirt and a boob tube springs to mind. In reality anyone with half a brain would be decked out in anything between motorcycle leathers to chainmail, but I'm going more for a campy adrenaline-fuelled zombie genocide than realism. :)

well, i imagine it would be pretty dangerous to get zombie blood on you, but it sure looks cool, i don't think anyone's going for that level of realism. and really, i can't remember a zombie story where the main character hasn't gotten a little zombie blood on them.

SC Watson - love the action scene and her pose. The thing that really pops out as being wrong is the leg anatomy.

Poshspice - Loving the action pose, second from bottom. Love her expression and the eye is cool. Her right leg looks a little off to me, from about mid thigh down, but I can't quite place why. Could just be me though.

DIMAGYAN - the zombie chicks are awesome and she has a cute expression on her face. I think her shoulders may be too wide, but that may be just personal taste. :)

darklogik - ohh, that would give you a headache. :) Loving her so far. Her left arm seems detached though, too long I think. And it's very straight, almost as straight as the pole.

Angel Intheuk - nice start, I think her right arm could use a bit of work, it seems too long to me, or maybe the angle of the gun is off?

dirkvandulum - crazed pyschopath immediately jumps to mind, but if the world went post-apolaylpse on me, stealing everything I held dear and turning everyone I knew to zombies, I think I would go a little bit crazy too. :D I believe her right shoulder is jutting out just a wee bit much.

Another WIP. Going to add more dress to this, and put the blood back. I'm not sure what the hell to do with her left leg yet though (with this taking place on top of a pile of debris). Still weighing up the idea of any makeshift armour/bandages.

Moski: Nice concepts! The third one has the strongest feel to it if you're going for the full on 'zombie slayer' look.

Markusthebarbarian: The t-shirt makes for a good nod to Punisher, although it's a little strange that she's wearing it over her coat. Liking the spiked pads on the shoulders.

Cosmitron: I like yours a lot, you've got a very unusual perspective looking quite natural. The zombies breaking through the window add a great effect too.

Emerging: Nice idea, made me chuckle. Is the fact the guy doesn't look like a zombie a deliberate factor of the 'blonde moment', or will you be zombifying him up before the end?

Munnin: Great idea with the pregnancy. The picture is eerily calm in a way.

Migsta: I like the idea of her carting her zombified bloke about, but he seems to be standing a little well-balanced for a walking corpse. Just a suggestion but I think it could benefit from him being a little more hunched over, or perhaps if he was tied/strapped to something that would force him upright.

Openanewworld: Those are excellent... C has a slightly more insane look which would be pretty appropriate, but the other three have very good feelings of action to them. You can't really go wrong with either of them.

Cosmitron - I love your perspective and she looks really innocent. The zombie in the window makes me laugh. It's looks like he's staring at her ass. *Edit* It's looking even better with color. I really can't wait to see what your final product is.

Darklogik - She's coming along great. I like how you colored her face. The light coming through the holes in the mask is a nice touch.

Poshspice - Her expression gives her a lot of attitude - great! Lines are strong and bonus points for the Shaun reference

Moski - Great weight to your lines. The strength of the hair, shotgun, knife and shadow helps keep it tight and feeling grounded.

Muninn - You have an interesting take and it's coming along nicely.

Arthur "Two Sheds" - The shoe is hilarious. Something about her leg still reads awkwardly for me. Maybe it'll come through better when the rendering is done.

Real life hit me like a ton of bricks this week. (Hooray for double shifts!) but after seeing all these excellent entries, I have to find a way to make time to get mine in. Good luck everyone!

quantumrat- keys to the weapon exhibit, i'd have a lot more weapons strapped on if i were her. :) though i would cut out some of that black space, unless of course there will be zombies there in the future.

Cosmitron- As everyone has said, really great. Amazing angle and some fun little story telling in there too. colors are looking good as well.

KleeWyck- i think you already got it, but the one thing that stands out is she doesn't look like a woman. overall a good concept, the fiance reminds me of the talking corpse hellboy slung over his shoulder in the movie.

AmbientSounds- looking good. however, and this is just personal preference, the colors are a little too saturated for me, actually it doesnt bother me as much in the full piece.

AvisNocturna- still looking kickass, are thos zombies in the bg. just an observation, the way you've painted her face she almost looks like a zombie.

englishduke- i'm glad you made the fiance green helps with the zombie effect.i would recommend more environment, maybe a coffee table, something.

Pixeltuner- Great changes, the fashionista persona comes across better now, and i like the umbrella.

Markusthebarbarian- the dyanmite is just that, dynamite. i like that her gear, says zombie apocalypse more now. i think that's the first time that i've seen a gryffindor scarf and a punisher shirt on the same person. made me lol, though the scarf probably wasnt intentional.

ThaDeus - zombie dominatrix?

Rodimus25- however endearing this character is, she isn't 30.

Reymus- very post apocalyptic, i like it . pretty kickass weapon too.

PsycheDragon- nice! i like the totally unrealistic gun. you should have the zombie torso clinging to her leg like those cliche sword and sorcery paintings.

darklogik- i imagine that would be a pretty effective head slicing tool, and i like the symbolism of the one way (to hell). looking good

bestow- not too many playing up the post apocalyptic near future aspect, i like it. hope to see more. it's just a wip, but watch the construction on her face, those eyes are floating out of place a little.

Blueman- lol, that's one crazy lady. with all the talk of realism here, she'd probably get infected that way.

dawnusllaw- it's got promise. i like the pose and her overall look.

Muninn- it's soo great, i like the little touches like the light shining through her shirt. and it's nice to see she woke up. ;) you might already have my vote.

emerging- though i've never seen a zombie make a face, he just might if that happed to him. it's good, though i'd go with a talking head, and a banner at the bottom for the tv, just a suggestion.

emerging- it's good, but nothing really screams zombie slayer for me. i don't know what it is about zombie images that makes me think of logistics, but if she had an assault rifle, then she would have had access to other things that were most likely with it (body armor, helmet) just an idea.

Migsta-nice simple solution to a bitey fiance. i like it as a whole, but it doesn't really focus on erica.

ikuru- she may be hard pressed to fight in that dress. i like the contrast, however, between the trucker hat and the dress.

conti- nice, great action shot, though a differnt angle might be more exciting.

Tommoy- sorry to spoil your idea, but i really like the revision. this has got a very night of the living dead feel to it. and thanks for the critiques.

Ramza- haha, so off the wall. hell, a sword fish may just have been the only thing to fight off the zombies. i'm really liking the style as well. hope to see more.

Moski- the decapitation version is sooo cool. really great work!

openanewworld- all of them please! seriously, great stuff. i like the top right one, the pose is golden, though you might want to choose between the blood or smoke trail.

Missile-hard to tell what you're going for , but i would suggest some stronger lighting, dark room with a fire outside. other than that, the leg, it looks like the skin is being used to stab the zombie. if you add some dimension to it, and have the bone sticking out, it would make more sense.

blau- sorry,not much to comment on, but it's looking good so far.

Garth Cochrane - love it. this could turn out great. again, i really like the overturned bus idea, and i really like body haging over the edge for some reason, though i would recommend having him decapitated as her latest victim.

Icecold - i like #2. and don't let anything prevent you from submitting someting, at the very least you can get some valuable feedback.

someone else was asking if i was gonna zombify the guy. I actually have the same question for myself. I know it's a minor thing that might sway the idea a bit in one or another direction. So i still gotta think about it lol.

Someone else said text was taking away from it. I do agree text is a bitch when it comes to art. I just don't know if people would get my EXACT idea if i don't include it. They might think she just shot him in the balls for no reason you know? I can always make the text less obvious.. blur it up a bit more make it more of tv quality but still somewhat readable.

Arthemis IX - I neglected to mention yours earlier, I believe. Your character is very strong. I like her a lot though I wonder if the hood detracts from it. The red scarf draws a lot of attention to the top of the body and her face is slightly obscured. It makes me wonder if the same couldn't have been achieved with lots of red hair sans hoodie. Regardless, it still works. Good job setting up the alley. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing this completed.

Agou - The blue and the shorts remind of the original Tomb Raider design. She looks tougher though.

Taimac - I like the pose. Can't wait to see what else you do with it.

emerging - maybe you can try adding some static and/or glare to the tv screen to help obscure it a bit and get rid of some of the pesky reading. I think it might be ok to completely lose some words so long as the important ones that get the message across stay in. "zombie, shoot, head" if you get my drift. Hit it with the subtle-stick a bit.

Garth Cochrane - I like where this is going and want to see it a bit further along, wishing I could see more of her expression at this point, but it's a nice pose.
Missile - I like the idea but her positioning seems uncomfortable. Something to try would be to pile some stuff up and try the pose yourself. It might also help give you a solution for her leg.
openanewworld - I really like "B" It's a great action shot and I think it's much more dynamic then "D".
Moski - I really enjoy the bottom drawing with the sadistic pleasure, and I like the shape it makes
Ramza - this is too much fun for words. Wanna see more.
Tommoy - I almost want to see a bit more gore on her (although that is a very personal thing). Looking forward to seeing more of this piece.
Conti - that is a very difficult pose. Might want to be careful with how her left arm connects, and her back leg. Like the action though.
EnglishDuke - humorous piece and very odd, but that's whats great about it.
bangalore_monkey - Your crazy with all those crits! Really like your piece and it's looking really good. My crit would be to work on the hands a bit more, a bit more contrast perhaps. The perspective on the lower front of the revolver seems a little off too, but it could also be the repeating texture on the cloud below it that's throwing me off.
emerging - so funny. Love the look on her face too. The color really helps things, but I think tron-one is right. Then you can lead the viewers eye from her to headshot to the dude in pain.
Arthemis IX - wow, so nice. The expression, action, my crit is to watch the right foot. To me it looks like it was chopped off, but a bit of lighting can easily fix that.
Muninn - I really like your piece, the concept is great.

As for my piece, I know her head is too big and her neck is too long, those will be fixed when i add color. Also gonna finish the gun and add a few more zombies at the end. Being a bit more in the future, I thought she would grab one of those exoskeletons that greatly enhance strength, that way she can carry a minigun in one hand. Might try rotating her just a tad more and make the angle a bit more extreme. Thanks for looking at my piece!

Hi everyone, I've been working on 2 ideas. Loving what I'm seeing. The action chick is based on the high jumpers Frosby Flip, I used pics from the net but also injured my muscles studying myself in the mirror to get the bits right. It still needs a lot of additions to it.

i like the idea of sign as a weapon hehe. TO be more pro? i think you need to watch out for the environment light color and direction. Right now it really is not clear what time of day (or is it a day) and what the light source is.. Also maybe leak certain colors into others like dont just separate pink completely, mix it up with some blues and stuff

Darklogik That's working just fine. She still looks pretty young but I think that's the way she's dressed much more than her face. So, you might just want to give that "I'm 30 but screw it, I dress the way I want and I'll look 16 if I want" feeling, or not.

Nice entries so far, here's our input (there's actually two people behind the username here, we do these as collabs).
She's got simple leather clothes for protection and short hair to avoid getting tangled up somewhere. Also, Erica relays mostly on knives and blades as they don't run out of bullets.
The second floor of her house would be the safest place to be, our heroine doesn't go out without a reason and a plan - though it's getting quite annoying gathering food supplies with all those undead around.

Muninn: Awesome. Looking fantastic already. I see what you mean about the hands - they look slightly stiff or posed compared to the rest.

Emerging: I think I prefer some of your earlier wips. It seems to have gotten slightly muddier as you've gone along. Maybe my eyes are shot :) Those undies sure look uncomfortable!

Bangalore_monkey: Yea boy! Haha...looks great. The hands might need some attention but that'll come. Really solid piece.

Englishduke: Not sure what's happening with the string - if it's meant to be a leash then I'd go for something with a bit more weight to it...a zombie would easily break free from the shoelace he's tied up with at the moment. The posing is good though. I'd just spend a bit of time on the rendering of the hair and the woodgrain on the gun too. Good luck and keep going!

Cosmitron: Wow, yup - that's my favourite. Awesome job. Great job on reeaally pushing the perspective - have you checked your vanishing points etc? Don't know how to put it but there's something going on with the perspective that's drawing my eye to the bottom left hand corner. Can't wait to see it all done!

Well, this is my concept so far. Making fun of VintageAds and the positive american attitude (although it's kinda based on prejudices and not-so-current rumors). I will try to make her look a little bit more angry :D (I love it when people smile while they're actually seething... :3)

Concerning the background I attached a new image, hopefully it'll be clearer that way. I didn't really want to add a real background but rather create a stark contrast to the houswife's "smile"; more or less give the image a visual indication of how Erica's actually feeling ;)
But well, right now it's terribly messy, that could also be a problem >.<

About her vacuuming the zombies face, it simply was the first thing that I thought off and I imagined it looking quite funny to see the zombies tongue flapping around and pieces tearing off and getting sucked up... problem is, you can't see that as it's now, and I think it'd work a lot better as an animation (or other moving images)...
And I absolutely love your suggestion. I think I'm gonna try that :>

Quite tempted to give up now. Everything I've tried changing seems to make it look worse - becoming quite a lot of hassle for something so simple and cartoony! Tried changing the pose to several different things and each looked more awkward than the last... the addition of blood was vital yet it leaves the picture looking (unsurprisingly) messy.

If I can gather up any more enthusiasm for it I think I'll cut out the background completely and make some big changes to the character design. Shame it's a little too late to start again really. Other than that... *kicks it to one side* Here's how it looked for lulz if I can't be bothered to add any more. :)

Missile - Because of the cartoony way you're working, perhaps getting your drawing sorted before colouring might help. If you get your composition, posing and story decided on first and don't keep changing your mind it'll come easier... Deciding early what you want and sticking to it means you won't be trying to 'fit' things in. :)

here is another update, made the legs of the guy a little bigger. fixed the underwear on the girl a little, did some minor adjustments. Added some foam and made the guy look a little more zombie like. Don't want him to look too zombie crazy cuz he just turned into one (like viral symptoms).

Starting to build things up, I rotated the image a bit and made the corrections to her head and neck. Still need to work out the background and add more zombies. Might want to make her skin a bit darker too, but not sure. It would make a focal point on the eyes, but it might be too much as well...Any crits on that or the overall image are greatly welcome.

darklogik - shoes are the same color as the road and there is also no real shadow
at the bottom so she doesn't look like standing on the road. She also looks like
falling backwards, becose her legs aren't positioned to well.
Reymus - colors are quite well, you should put some background to really
adjust colors. Lights from each side should be of different color or the picture
will look flat. I think the shadow of the girl is not in the same perspective as
of the zombie.
sekino - a lot of energy, she even has the time to smoke :)
Grandmassa Mr. Spect - the woman lookes quite scarry real, it's like a picture
from a movie. Keep it up!

Darklogic- Awesome in all ways, but I think you can get rid of that car, it's a little too bright and shiny, maybe just replace it with burning scrap, hot dog stand, or trash can.

Great entries so far! Here's the one I'm working on. Still fairly early progress shot, and I'm still not sure what kind of outfit I'm going to give her. Probably gonna change the hairdo too.

AvisNocturna - Love this one, even the early concept looked awesome. She looks older than 30 to me, mainly 'cause of the hair.

Markusthebarbarian - Definitely a tough looking character. The legs are really flattening against that wall, make sure you give enough space between her and the back.

KuGu - Really like the girl's design in this, cant wait to see what you do with it.

Emerging - I like the setup and lighting, but I really feel like you need to push the zombie look. Given her pose, the fact that she shot him in the groin, and the ring on the ground, it almost looks like she shot him for proposing to her. I don't know if you want to lose the ring or not, but the image was reading fine to me until I noticed it.

Darklogic - Looking good, but watch the proportions. She's got a huge head.

Well, I had a couple hours break tonight, so I thought I'd give Erica a go, since I haven't hit a CHoW in quiiiiite some time.

I figured that since she has a job downtown (I'm thinking NYC, cause really, what other downtown is even worth mentioning?), she is most likely pretty fashion-savvy, so took some ques from the Runway and through in a little Zombie Slayer attitude... and what NYC girl would be complete without her coffee in hand? None that I have met. Hopefully I can get another couple hours in this weekend...

Thanks for the advice. I think the main problem was that something relying on such solid shapes and lines means that just a slight adjustment has you playing around with half of the picture at once.

Got a vaguely decent idea that would let me salvage half of it, take more people's crits in and put the focus entirely on Erica... I see it in my head as the sequal image to her being overpowered by the zombies in the Bridal shop.

Only problem is time and the massive lack of it.

Anyway, crits while I'm waiting for stuff to do at work.

Migsta: I like the contrast of action with the fairly calm look on Erica's face. I'm not sure whether you altered her zombie boyfriend's posture or not, but he definitely looks less rigid now. :)

lkjhgfdsa: Nice concept with a good sense of power behind it - will you be changing the colours at all or keeping with a very red theme?

Openanewworld: Love this one. The crucified zombie, the random abusive graffiti on the chainsaw and the demented expression on Erica - seems like the perfect post-apocalypse tone.

Lotta: Aside from the green being a little distracting, the only other things that come to mind is that Erica's pose looks a bit too much like she's falling, and the zombie's head on the left is quite big in comparison to hers. Good work so far though, keep it up.

Well, since you wanted feedback... her feet look kind of strange as they are now. I think they shouldn't stretch that far backwards (well, it's not really "far" but it's enough to make it look weird). Also, the blood splatters on the shield. They're far too regular and they all have the same length, which kind of looks unnatural. Right now it reminds me of a sun or something (the outlines) :)


Well, bout my pic: she's now officially ironing zombies ;) Well, it's still a sketch right now but I'd really love to hear what you think about it.
Moreover, I'm not totally sure about the background... actually I like the direction in which the current one's going. Totally random :D
