Did this early this summer, added some shading later on. As the odd angle and proportion indicates, there was no reference used.

well i can certainly see that you know how to draw! i like the anatmy sketches they look pretty consistant. self portarits are a good way to improve your knowledge about the face shape. it also gets you used to drawing facial features. good work htough. keep it up!:D

Any crits? Are my faces getting better?
Bluga
January 27th, 2004, 04:07 PM
The center man's facial anatomy is good, but the woman at the top has some problems. I think it's mostly the eyes seem unnatural. I know general crits like "something's off" aren't too much help, so I'll try to get specific. The problem with her face is that her eyes are too far up on her head, and this is what throws off the rest of the face, making the forehead too small and the nose too long. But definately the shape of the eyes is throwing things off too.
heh, I hate noses too
But generally, your body anatomy is very good.
I'm not sure why I assumed it was a girl. I guess it could go either way. heh.

a little crit, though. imo your heads are to "ballish" (loomisish?) if you look at a model with a shaven haven... i mean head, the head is longer (from front to back) and more angular.
AndreasM
July 5th, 2004, 02:28 AM
BRANDISH: 'Ballish' indeed. I just realized that tend to draw a circle and then add all the features, ignoring the basic head structure..thanks for the...'heads' up :) hahaha! (silly me).

wow, I just went through your whole thread and you have improved exponentially. Great work, your more recent drawings are really kickin some ass. Its nice to hear that you dont use a blending stick anymore, your vales look alot better and everything as a whole looks much cleaner.
Your sketches are really looking fab-o-lous...you seem to be pretty hard on yourself, which is okay sometimes, but you should have confidence that what you are producing is good, and that everyone is always learning. Youre getting the process down, and its good to study the anatomy...something I should do more of! ^_^

Slash: Takk! Det er alltid oppmuntrende når noen ser framgang i skissene mine.:) Bor for øyeblikket i Sandefjord, frem til fredag. Skal begynne på kunstlinja på Trøndertun folkehøgskole. I bought my equipment in a store named Farveriket Bjørvik in Sandefjord. If you ever plan to take a trip to that god forsaken city, visit that store. They have a nice art section.
miesie: Thanks. The last scetches were drawn on some more or less heavy aquarel paper. They are thick, and have some nice rough texture. They were not toned, though. Photoshop did that job. I use mechanical HB pencils, at 0.3, 0.5, 0.7 and 0.9.
Since I hate posting replies withouth art, here is an half unfinnished sp. I prolly won't have time to finnish it, since i'm moving from town, but i'm open to some crits.

Hm, well, not being confident with the basics is one thing. I have yet to learn perspective; putting my characters in an enviroment, giving them ground to stand on, etc...also, I need to learn thinking volume over line, wich I'm working with now. Truth is, I just want to get more confident before I start doing finnished work.
But hey, thanks alot for that compliment (yes, I see that as a compliment)! Starting to do commisions has been a scary thought, but hell, why not give it a try.

Hey thaks for droping by dude, the critics you maked on my
images are spot on :D thanks i need to work more on eyes
spect some new SP for todays work enfasis on skull work
and shading on the area of the eyes he he.
Keep on doing the Kchen stuides, I fell they are hepling me to
understand the volumen on the faces, and i can see its helping
your too :D.
sugesstion:
It might be good chage for you to trade you normal HBpecil for a an 8B
pencil or a graphite bar, and tring to use the side of you pecil to make big
consistent zones of gray that way the image will look cleaner and the
shading an ligth will be better limited, try pusing your darks more
too, even if its just a small scketch try pussing your darks, your are doing
really good, just keep at it!!.
P. S. the more image you make like this one,
doodles52.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v22/n0fish/doodles52.jpg)
the more you will understand ligth and volumen, If found that I understand
more about volumen without line when I make full value SP or studies. =)

Just want to bump in this one. I know that the contrast is lacking...the rendering isn't finnished..I'm really struggling with the arms, though, esp. on that big monster thingy...so any help is largely appreciated :teeth: Mabye his deltoids are too big hehe..
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v22/n0fish/doodles57.jpg
maxetormer
Hehe no problem. I'm glad I could help.
Hmm...switching to a wooden pencil wouldn't be too dumb, though I don't know about 8B...might get a little too smudgy.
Point taken about making more high contrast value drawings. If you have seen the drawings of James Kei, you will see that he is exellent at getting the planes down with simple strokes. I think I should put emphasis on that, before i go wild on the dark value renderings...
Thanks for the thoughts and keep it up bud :)

you have a verry nice skill!
your problem is that you drow a little part of the body, than get to shadding and shadding, than drow the next little piece of the body and rander it too, and so on............ in stead of building all your volume and than get to rander the body! It's a mistake that i'm trieing to give up on... It really makes you do more proportions and shape errors... And you have a verry nice line and style for this to happen!
eh... i belive i;m not the one that should give you the advices...

Hey those SP studies in the mirror look great
Reminds me of when in the summer I would lock myself in the bathroom, sit on the toilet and draw, or sit on the counter or lean against the wall.
hehe yeah it can be physically demanding, its a good workout to draw while an arm is up or your body is in a difficult position and it IS so hard to draw the drawing hand lol.
Keep the studies, lots of progression
patternagainst
March 22nd, 2005, 06:01 PM
What the hell happened to you, dude?
Insane progressions. Remember to keep it loose. Looks like you're grasping that pretty well. As for your faces, I would rather see you studying the skull rather than the shapes, but those are good too. Love your bone studies. Pay attention specifically to the way things connect to one another on the body. Flow around the body. As for that drawing of you in the mirror before you render it to death... the head... it seems out of proportion. It also kills the flow of the drawing because the head and neck are stiff. Pay attention to the spinal cord and keep it loose. Try taking deep breaths in the mirror and blowing them out, get that sleepy like form in your upper body's bones and flesh. It will help you pay attention to the flow of the body. Push your neck around limp in that mirror.
Awesome. Really inspiring. This is going in my subscriptions.

You have a very interesting style going on here, the more studies
you make the more your personal style shinnes man!!, the best thing
I could say rigth now is that it could be a good idea that you make
less detailed studies in exchange of doing lots of drawings, just to
memorize attach points for muscles and proporcion measuremts for bones,
try to make some stuides were the abstract part of brain works more, read
the anatomy books you have and dont draw right off, instead visualice
in you head the things you read about, this IMO its helping me to get
a better grasp on anatomy as of late, its more work for the brain,
but the pay off is better as well :D
Thats all (dunno if Im right mybe Im just crazy he he :^^;: )

The yellow CD cover is, I think, one of the better ones u'v done. It's not that important if the ear is a bit goofy or the nose, what ever. It gives the painting some great character. Love the hair, btw, it reminds me abit of HPX characters.

really solid stuff as usual here, do you have any plan for what you draw as studies? i mean are you working through a book, working on certain parts of the body or just enjoy drawing torsos and are working outward? I ask because you seem to focus on torsos whereas i tend to stick with faces when i just sit down to draw just wondering if you do the same thing.
as for progress, i'm not sure you need any help there, the rendered drawings look great, my only comment would be that your necks seem to be pretty short and thick, which works for the buff guys but the slender ladies could maybe use a more slim feminine neck. oh, and how about some full bodies, the amputees are freaking me out :-p

Nifelfang: Thanx man :)
Ni* : hm..I really just want to work out a decent method for drawing the human body. I guess I keep drawing the torsoe, since it's the center in wich everything connects. Thanx for the comments on the necks. And as for more fullbody drawings...thanks for busting the coward in me hehe. I'm sort of working on it.

I feel bad for posting this now, after reading the announcement. I have been ill for a while and i'm allergic to summer air, so I haven't been as productive as I have wanted. This is a sad attempt at getting a general look of the full figure. No hands, no feet, way too big legs (that looks like badly attatched plastic prostethics) and bad proportions. He is so stiff that a small gust of wind would tip him over. Heh, I could go on forever...Hopefully, the embarrasment of posting it here will motivate me to make better attempts.

honestly, man.. I think your starting to figure the anatomy out by now. :) Start focusing more on the imaginative stuff, lines and shadows now i'd say. The perfect anatomy and dynamic movment will come as you draw. Drawing is'nt suppose to be a burdon where u have to study and study and study, study u do at school. ;)
Get inspiration from some other artist and flip out and do somthing wacked with the knowledge of yours. The rest will come as you draw. :)
btw. Awsome stuff. ^^

Thanx man. I do some imaginative stuff (often too crude to be posted here), but yeah, you're right, I could focus a little more towards finnished pieces. About the studying...I guess i'm afraid of my own work. I allways have to get better, and when I think of all the things I 'have to accomplish', it somehow becomes a burden, mabye something I 'have to do' before the fun can start again. :nohope: At the other hand, I'm havig ALOT of fun with making and arranging music (I play the guitar), so that may get in the way as well;)

i just took the time to look through your SB again from the start, it's a drip of sweet honey inspiration. I agree with what has been said about you doing some imaginative works, your anatomy knowledge is coming along nicely so you could apply that to more dynamic poses. Sometimes i sketch from fencing photos, the bodies are all over the place in those, in fact i challenge you to do an anatomy style drawing of a fencer in an action pose!
you suggested i start a DSB a few months back and i had the excuse of being busy, but now i've got at least 2 full weeks of free time to develope a habit of it, and a new A3 pad i got for free, surely it's a sign :-p thanks for the inspiration.

Hi there man!!
I can always spare a good kick in the butt for ya my friend :P he he,
First than anything your are the one that puts my sorry efforts
to shame man, really Im aways been amazed of your deep well crafted
anatomy studies, I kinda stopped doing em becase I got a little feed
up of them but I gonna start doing them again in short time with
renew motivation after all the imagination doodles Iv been doing lately.
Now about the last updates, the generation of volume throught the
modeling of light is really looking good, I looked throguth your entire thread
and the conclusion Im getting is that imo your doing the rights things
I mean, I can see your analize body dinamics on some studies and on others
you focus on learing atach points of muscles and overall canon proporcions,
and you seem to be incorporating this knowlege more and more on your
imagination doodles, the thing that bothers me the most, is that some times
you seem to forget that you need to add small twists and turns in oposite
directions on the pelvis vrs the thoracic cage, and that is essecial to give
a natural feell to the stances of you imagination caracters,
take this one for example:
n0fish_critter--v2_web.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v22/n0fish/n0fish_critter--v2_web.jpg)
now imagine him with a sligt inclination on the shoulders (one up the other
sligthy down) , mixed with a small inclination of the head in an oposite
direction, even in still pin-up posses you need to find this small forces of
tension that give the breath of life that we all want to put in out caracters,
Im not saying that I know how to do this well tho, :P mainly this are the same
things I keep repeting to my self, this is one of the things in wich I think I
have the most problems as well, Im also repeating the things I read form
Marko´s threads, reading his replies is one good way to gather new info:
J May: It is the tension you give to a static pose
that makes it come to life. How you include weight and such. That's all and
no big secret. Everyone could do it.
this camed form this thread:
DISSONANCE: conceptart [titanic DL] (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=38329&page=3&pp=60)
You know finding a good a dinamic balance even in still poses is a must to
portrait a caracter correctly and lively, check out Marko´s stuff and Steak´s
stuff too they both have this amazing understanding of all this little
balance details.
Overall I really dig you drawings and I can see you have tons of raw
observation skill that only need a bit more finesse to jump onto the
next level, really I resort to you thread more than you might think,
when Im out of inspiration or drive I check out your efforts and
I feel like a lazy slacker, and then I start drawing again :^^:
Keep it up!! ill be egearly awating for the next update man, so hurry up
do sum more doodless asap and post em would ya!!! :confident

Maxetormer: Thank you for the long reply dude!! More a pat on the back than a kick in the butt, but yay, you made my day! I'll take averything you said in to account. My next bunch of anatomy studies will be focused towards the pelvis, the legs and the distribution of wheight. If I can learn this without life models, I will consider myself a god. (j/k hehe :D)

I'm frustrated as hell with this one. It's supposed to be a redesign of Nike's drawing in the scetch trade thread. It's all overworked, the arm is wonky, I suck at drawing hands and the helmet design is sort of ridicioulus...I have done a colour rough with my mouse as well, but I think I'll post it in the Critique senter. I'm sort of tempted to start all over again and add some improvements to the design. Tell me what you think!

First off.. I want to tell you how great your sketch thread is progressiing.. Very nicely... I also want to give you some praise on the artistic jumo from page 2 to page 3... Yuo started to add some very dynamic darks in the third page that are making your character portraits pop right out off the fucking page... really great prgression.. probably one the best Ive seen on these threads from one page to another.. keep up the great work... Just a side note... the one thing that I noticed is the hair on most of the characters are almost all the same... I would suggest getting some fotos of great hairdos.. maybe some fashion ones... they usually have some really funky shit that would share the likeliness of your drawings... keep it up..

paying off greatly
about your warrior sketch heres it is and over paint to show you whan
I belive is missing on your bodies:
http://img128.imageshack.us/img128/2358/nofishov4en.jpg
When I have trouble to make a posse work I oftern draw a full body structure
even if I only want to use a part of it rember to curve the spine of your
caracters and remeber that the lower masses of the body go in inverse
oppsition to the upper ones, that is if the arms are leaning towards the left
the pelvies should lean toward the rigth, well heres the overp I hope I help
you out to some degree, this are the same things I struggle with so I
probably have various mistakes :P
Keep on studing and experimenting, and never give up,
I really like the way you handle your lines and you imagiation
is top noch, see ya later, Im falling sleep on the key board.

I woked on this drawing last night and I was pretty satisfied with how it turned out. Well, looking at it now, all I can say, ist that the drawing is ruined. It's stiff, and it has all of the problems that Maxetormer has allready pointed out in my earlier attepmts. Now, I do not hate it completely, I like how the colours are turning out, and well, it has the potential to become a good picture. All I need to do, is to plan the gesture and proportions properly and restrain from rendering in the early process. Also, mabye a bigger paper will do better next time, esp for the planning of perspective and composition.

thanks guys!
I have started doing this master study by Bouguereau, "The Flagellation of The Christ". I started out by drawing Jesus first, but I'm gonna do the rest of the "main guys" later. It's drawn on an A3 sheet and I still need more space to draw the whole figure. I'm not sure wether I'm gonna combine several sheets for one big drawing, of if I'm going to draw the figures seperately. I must say that drawing after the old master really opens my eyes for the more subtle shapes and values. Every artist should (imho) do this at least one time during their lives.
Early progress, for those who are interrested..

NoFish... this thread is kicking my ass. Seriously. Bro, you've improved so much in the last couple years. I know I've prolly said it before but I'm puttin' it out there again. And y'know why you're kickin' all this ass? Because you work hard at it. You're drawing a lot. I commend you and look up to you... even tho you're younger than me... lol I love the work you're doing... please keep it up and I promise I'll make my name evident around here a hell of a lot more often. Thanks for the tip in my thread as well, mate.

Dr_Brain: Thanks man! I'll try to squish out some more colour work..
styler, hehe thank you.
van: Long time indeed! Thanks for all the comments :)
jkior: Yea, doing master studies is a great learning experience. I get frustrated first, but when the main proportions are down (or when I think they are!), it's a pleasure to discover all the subtle values, gestures and shapes that has been placed by the artist. I discover new things all the time and that really helps me push my boundaries, even if it feels slow most of the time.
van, thanks again mate.
I started on this one a cuple of days back. It was sort of unmoivated, I just started drawing a head. This creature is really just a shell that wraps over this energy parasite container thing...the creature can both unleash and absorb energy from other living things. I have alot of ideas for this one, and I really want to develop it further. Expect to see more concept on this one over the year..

sick stuff dude.
one thing i notice because i tend to do it myself is that you over-render certain areas because you don't seem to grasp the area as a whole in terms of shading.
i would try doing some studies where after you do the line work, you do contours for areas of shadow and fill them in with some simple hatching. that way you break down the basic lights/darks and the whole thing starts looking a lot more cohesive.

Farvus, yeah, master studies are great, espesially if you are like me, and think you are good enough with your pencil skills.:dur:
yutani, thanks for the crit! I notice you do this alot yourself. I tried it out on a couple of self portraits (wierd lightning and all), and even though I had problems with seperating all the lines, I definately see what you mean. I see that wes does the same alot, and well, it's funny how I didn't realize how his drawings consists more of perfectly placed "planes" (rather than random gradients and such), before you gave me that crit. I'll definately use that aproach in the future.

Well, as you can see, I'm going back to the basics again. With a very few exeptions, I'm showing everything I have done the past...three days? So basically, you get my up's and downs. I'm thinking about posting more regulary again, pherhaps use this thread more as a journal. You will see my good days, my bad days, my decent drawings and my bad drawings. I think it's a great idea showing everything, and start posting more regularely, I should do so myself. Anyways very nice studies, what are those loomis or something?
I guess you could work a bit on the lines, possibly they seem a bit unsertain, or how to put it, from times. Tho that isn't really a thing bothering me.
Vary your work allso, I mean don't hang yourself over studies completaly, do little doodles allso, to keep up the imgination. :)
But that's just little advice, I can tell you're doing very well on your own. :)
Just keep posting!

Hey Tigermilk. No, no Loomis in here. Yeah, my lines are uncertain as hell, esp on those spots i'm not 100% confident at. I'm sorry for boring you guys with all the anatomy drawings, but that's what I currently want to develop further. I do alot of non-ref doodles, mainly figures, and I have TONS of shortcomings on that kind of work (movements of the arm, the hands\foot\legs and the muscles on the back, to name a few), so, well I have to work a lot on adding new knowledge to my library, so to speak.
Started tonights session with some imaginative figure work, keeping in mind what Targete said about NOT erasing the mistakes, just moving on and so forth. They all (exept #4) look ghey and I'm gonna try to continue working with this every day.

daaaaang dude incredible anatomy studies. . .you said during the david study that you suck at hands. . .then you went on and did pages of hand studies. That's the perfect attitutude to approach this stuff, great to see! mmm, also like how you write down little notes and self-crits alongside the studies. . .it seems a little corny at times but it's a great way to solidify these things in your mind, I think.
also re my earlier comment about master copies - all too true hehe. . .yeah it can be incredibly frustrating but it's also as close to a shortcut as you can get I think to jumpstart some particular area that's fallen behind.
anyway man rock on! i'm watching and learning and taking notes for my own studies post-feb. . .

Today, I discovered James Jean. Seeing his artwork was one of my biggest ego-busts to date. I simply got depressed and angry at my own work. It's boring, right? Just a bunch of anatomy studies that looks gradually better becouse it's the only thing I do. Shit, am I really doing the right thing? Am I wasting my time, do I REALLY want to become a good artist?
I got it! let's get upset instead of just drawing! Yeah, that will do it.
Here we go again. The arm studies are done without reference.

As you can see, I'm reworking this one. The torso was too wide, his head was too big, arms too long and the list goes one. I have put it on side for a while now, together with David. Might start on it sometime soon. On the corner is a prelim study i did before I went on correcting the big one.

Hey, jkior, thanks for dropping by again. Hehe yea, re - reading my notes is a little funny some times. Corny is indeed an apropiate word.:) Gotta do more master copies too. Jokisalo, hehe 5 stars? You're crazy...:^^: Wich references do you mean, exactly? The old paintings i study can be found at www.artrenewal.org . The rest is from life, memory or my anatomy book.
did this today. It's hard to see the values and edges right when you have the lamp right up in your face. I had to do alot of refining from memory afterwords. I should have spent alot more time on the hair and clothes, but my back and leg (wich seriously begun to hurt, since it was raised all the time to keep the block at a decent height) kept bothering me, so I had to cut. Stupid chair.

Orozc0: thanks. Whenever i decide to look up some nude female references, I tend to spend more time on looking at them than actually drawing them.

Thanks tiger:) Yeah, the face kinda broke the composition and it was kinda rushed too.
I started to rework the SP again...the more i rendered, the more I ruined, so i erased the shadows in anger. Got a nice operatunity to rework some of the proportions. Sticking this long to a drawing makes me slowly realize the patience and effort that is requiered to do a realistic drawing. This one is intended to be a portfolio piece for my account to the florence academy of arts. I'm allready late :(

wow... you're really doing great. I always find it amazing how people can just buckle down and do the anatomy studies. I have never been able to do it... I must find a way to motivate myself to do it... any tips? I really enjoyed seeing This SP (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v22/n0fish/102.jpg)... It's really nicely done. You should definently do some more... very solid work here, my only criticism completely subjective and can be ignored... I think that some of your rendering is possibly over-worked... if you simplified things it would read better from far away especially... don't be afraid to use flat tones with broad strokes to lay in an area of shadow.. try following the form with your hatching... good to see your work improving so much! I will definently check back!!

Mr.blonde: I got this anatomy kick when seeing metalwinds thread. His line is so fluid and confident and that really got me started. And thanks for the crit! Theres some really nice anatomy studies in here. Its really evident that you're improving a lot from these studies. My only crit would be that some of these feel a bit stiff, as though you are focusing so much on the individual bones and muscles that you don't feel the movement through the whole figure. I'd like to see some gestures thrown in here to focus on the whole pose, I think that would really tie the whole thing together. Overall though, looking very nice, keep it up.
