I do use a freeware CamStudio 2.5 beta version (stable is 2.0). It works great for my digital painting recording. Some people says it has quirks, but I didn't notice any of them. There is also a payable Camtasia Studio. But it's quite expensive and has tools that I don't need.

And remember, basic knowledge about compressors (software used for compressing video, such as xvid or x264) and editing video may be needed. Without that, it will be hard to achieve nice results. I personally like x264 because it has great ratio between quality and file size. But it's one of heaviest compressors, so you may need a powerful computer to paint in Photoshop and record (it compresses all time) simultaneously without much sluggish work flow.

I also use CamStudio (and a cheap microphone)

I run everything through After Effects for final assemble and compression.
