Female Portraits 1. Here is the go link!! http://www.payloadz.com/go?id=777437
For those who wanted a teaser, there is a little bit to at least give you an idea. The video is full of info and the comments in the preview just give a picture of the kind of in depth topics are covered.
In this first in a series of portrait downloads for ConceptArt.Org, the artist ZhangLu paints a stellar series of portraits as Jason Manley provides insights into painting Caucasian females, portraiture from imagination, providing art history commentary, and basic theory regarding creating female heads from imagination. Topics highlighted include mood, expression and soul as well as technical matters.
About the Artist:
ZhangLu is one of China's top character artists and digital portrait painters. He currently works at Massive Black Shanghai as a concept artist and digital painter. ZhangLu is currently working on a multi-video series which supports the community and will help artists around the world.

Hey everyone...please don't upload this to torrents. The money is going to support the community that ca earns. We need more servers and have some great new tech to install...including some new things that will improve this site for the better very very quickly. We really need the help to keep them off torrents.
Anyway...please do not upload to the torrent sites. It really makes a difference around here to not do that.

Awesome stuff Mr. Manley! I'll be buying it tonight (I live in HK, so different time zones and such), once I ask my mother if I can use her paypal account, heheh.
Great stuff, as always. Always a pleasure to support CA.org.
And just a quick question - how are the planned online classes coming along? I am looking forward to those a lot.
Thanks :)

Screw it, just rang and asked my mom. Already paid, downloading right now.

Wow. I just previewed this vid. Zhang Lu is a beast!
Well worth the $20 in my opinion, and I'm a harsh critic given that I do this for a living.
And to put things in perspective for you, I payed $125 per day at my art school and only got a small fraction of the information offered here in this vid.
And yes folks, please support the community by not uploading this tutorial. :yayca:

I think there are a total of six recordings in that vid...granted there is one key image as the primary focus and discussion point but there is a lot of content included, no doubt. Multiple psd files too....as I think someone mentioned.

Wow. Seriously found it hard to believe that Jason was only talking for 30 minutes. I just finished a whole (very expensive) semester of head drawing, and it only covered a small part of the information in the video. Absolutely priceless stuff, and a fucking steal at 20 bucks. Great to watch Zhang Lu's painting as well, I'm gonna need to go hunting for more of his work.
Jason, seriously, it's great to finally get some straight instruction from you and I really hope there's more coming our way.

I really like this one. Was a little different this time because the artist painting was not the artist talking. Good to hear from you Jason. You need to be doing these a lot more, you have sound advice!
Really learned a lot from this one and I will put more work into my head studies (by including master studies and public sketching).
I was going to black too soon I think, I need to cut down on that shit.

ok now that i watched it here is what i have to say.... First whoever put together the intro to the vid BEAUTIFUL. that was some top notch stuff...... next Jason's lecture. I just wish i had an art teacher in college that would lecture like that. I mean he uses the 'art history terms' that cause you to actually learn and remember what they mean. The illustration is topnotch also. I also thought the psd files were going to be 'step by step' drawing of the main images but realized i was blessed with a mini portfolio :)
BlackGuy
May 23rd, 2009, 11:59 AM
the lecture was fantastic, the artwork was obviously amazing. I learned tons just by watching ZhangLu paint. I had one SMALL gripe and it's that having the music play while you were talking was a little distracting for me, and it kept taking me out of the vid. I'm not sure how everyone else feels, but I think it's more beneficial to have the music fade at the beginning of the lecture, and then come back in when the lecture is over.

Heh, seconded on that. Wasn't a huge problem and I actually like the music, I just found it a bit distracting given Jason's very info-packed talk and 4 sped up videos going on simultaneously.

I agree, I feel that the right use of music can make demos like these really immersing. Like movies and games though, it has to be done correctly, or it'd be too distracting. It isn't necessary in every demo or tutorial, but when used appropriately like in this demo, it just kicks it up a whole 'nother level.
Some of the songs in the demo are great examples of music being an art in a form of auditory expression. Combine that with visual expression via painting, drawing, and what not, it becomes bliss (at least for some of us). For me, it was like a nutella.

Great video! The painting itself was of course was of course amazing to watch, but the voiceover was extremely informative as well. Full of helpful reminders and advice. I'd agree on the music mixing in with the voice being a bit distracting, but it wasn't too bad. All the extras like the PSDs (not flattened, thankfully, I've never understood that one) were a huge bonus too. Highly recommend this download :)

Quick question for Mr. Manley:
What kind of brush configuration is Zhang Lu using? From what I can gather, it's a simple round brush. But is it flow or opacity sensitivity (Maybe both?) Hard with a somewhat soft edge? Size sensitivty with minimum diameter?
Thanks in advance, and I loved the vid, really helpful. But I still need a lot of practice. I take it there will be more portrait videos in the future?
Slash
May 24th, 2009, 06:33 AM
I loved this! My only gripe is that it wasn't my favorite of the pictures that was the main focus, i preferred the one with the cap to the right. ;)
Watching ZhangLu paint was a delight, and i didn't really have a problem with the music over the voice, exept in a few spots. The voice and music combo gave off a hypnotic "zeitgeist" vibe that made me lose concentration. But like i said, most of the time it worked just fine.
Thank you guys!

The answer is use whatever brush makes the mark you want. There is no secret in the simple basic brushes. Need a transparent mark..change the transparency...need less flow...change the flow.
I dont mean to be curt...just saying. You can also pause the video when he makes his selections if there was a spot you are curious about.
Thanks for the support everyone. This helps with the server and new educational program stuff a lot and well..thanks..thanks..thanks.

1 about the music i actually like the background music and i am sure if it wasnt present it would be needed:)
2 I was about to suggest more 'how to' info be added onto the next ones but like Jason said above ... it really doesnt matter.
again i want to thank Zhanglu for putting this together and Jason for all the words added just one question do you write this down or is it off the top of your head. So taking the advise of Jason and following the direction of Zhanglu i am heading to the amusment park today to look at faces and then draw from memory when i get home

Seriously...buy this one!
Jason, thanks for presenting the information in such an organized and easy to understand way. That makes such a huge difference! I love almost all of the videos I've purchased, but this one is a step above.
My only request: could you eventually do a vid that steps away from "ideals of beauty", and focuses more on creating believable imperfection from imagination? It's really easy to find reference for "beautiful" people from tv/magazines (I'm bored to tears with pretty people), and you can find a fair number of "plain" individuals walking about, but really interesting or "ugly" people are really under represented sometimes.

Sorry Jason, But from what I could gather, it didn't seem like much.
Now I have spent my entire night to studying this video and my first impression was "holy shit"
This is probably the best DVD you guys have released.
I DID get disappointed when you picked the drawing I like least to be the main one. But you know, thats just my taste and opinion so its useless.
It still showed perfectly how he approaches drawing.. and the edge control. I mean jebus H. C. He knows -exactly- were to put the edges to make the most impact.
On another note, your voice is as pleasant as Andrews. Aside from the "umms" it was very enjoyable to listen to.
I've been noticing more and more how you start to give out these things in more parts.
And I'm concerned because that puts you pretty much in the same price range as Gn0m0n. While they charge you 60-70bucks for 4-9hours material.
You charge 20 for 1-2hours. And they give you everything at once, you give us parts of longer series which eventually will be "Portrait drawing: Part 1-4" Total cost: 80bucks.
(I hope you see where I'm going with this)
But I guess you guys have been having some serious issues with torrents and I really do understand that this must be a hell hole to keep afloat with all those bills..
I also understand why you would want to charge more, I mean in a "normal" society, why wouldn't you want more money? You're on top of the world in my eyes.
You really really provide beneficial value. And so far, (with one or two exceptions) It has been quality stuff. (The music in the BG also helps to make it enjoyable)
Anyway, I'm glad you made this dvd and I'm glad I bought it. I'll probably buy the next one too because Zhanglu and Chan now share first place in my top 5greatest artists.
I'm sure this DVD will help me get enough to pay for the next one ;)

i looked at that myself and also said that some times part isnt the right world cause truthfully most of these parts are stand alone also....james clynes recent dvd for example were like 60 bucks eack for a historical/futuristicand set design and they were in comming soon status for like ever... atleast with massive black you can get parts instead of waiting for the whole to be complete

second...we have to do them in parts...would be a two gig file and some of these vids take months for the guys to get through...considering i got about ten demos total at ringling and paid tens of thousands of dollars for it i think twenty bucks is fair. the info presented in that eighty five minutes is enough for you to work on for months right? the reality is, if we sold them any cheaper ca wouldnt hit its obligations financially...they dont make a ton of money and with the torrent problem they really dont...so all the support is fucking huge for us as it keeps ca moving forward.
thank you.

The style which Zhu shows is both easy to get into but very hard to MASTER. I recommend anyone on the fence to buy this because it will take some time to get used to and I already see the benefits. This video really nails it on the head for value control and head construction. This technique works for both observational studies and imaginary, heck I bet it would work as well for still life as it would for portraits.

Actually I don't really get why people are complaining about the choice of the main portrait. I think that's one of the hardest angles to pull off convincingly and I'm really glad that that was the one chosen. If you pay attention you will see his technique remains the same in the other portraits too, so I guess in the end it doesn't really matter which one was picked to be bigger. It was super refreshing to see ZhangLu's process mainly because it is so different from my own. It's given me a lot to think about- the placement and pressure applied for each brushstroke, being sensitive to the subtle changes in value and edge, variation in features (I draw everyone like myself, apparently :( ).Thank you so much and I'm really really looking forward to more!

Well done guys. Another thing that really suprisede me but worked so well is how zhanglu stayed in quite a midtone value range yet the forms still read perfectly and maintained realism. And also how he did not make the eyes the darkest part of the face.

Well worth the $20 in my opinion, and I'm a harsh critic given that I do this for a living.

Try some abstract mark making in your background...and maybe vary up the airbrush mark into a bit more of a natural shape. when i see that fuzzy round airbrush it screams photoshop. Also try varying the expression. the relaxed face is the easiest!!
nice edge play on the hair though slash. smart moves with that. watch out for equal rendering on the top of the head...the hair tends to have some natural abstraction happening and shape variation, even in the light and highlight shapes.

The features are a little big for the size of the skull. Try doing a free transform on the features and see if you can make them fit the head a little better. Also try drawing some skulls so you have the underlying structure better. and yeah..style the hair!!!

try a top down or top 3/4 light position. The underlighting is tough to get all the core shadows and shadow shapes right. a bit more details on the eyelids and lips will help...as will fixing the ears so they dont look melty...ears are important too!
why so sad?

Not to be a downer or anything, but is there a preview video of this that we can see anywhere? the price is a bit high, and I'm not saying it's not worth it, but just that it's a lot of money to put down when you really don't know what you are getting. I think having a preview video, even a short 30 second one would go far to expanding the sales of this video beyond the built in fan-base you have here.

you are doing some things well..lighting is coming along ok...my suggestion is to look more at mood and who you are painting...she seems about 40 years old. Why is she pursing her lips? You must ask questions about it.
Also the eyes could be painted so they look both in the same point of space...one is slightly looking another direction.
also do not ignore the body and neck and shoulders

The feeling of light is a bit...it could use some adjustment. try playing in the levels in pshop and see if you can capture the value range of light and shadow better. You may want to also try some reflect light...anything to help with the feeling of luminosity. It is almost like the light is the wrong value for the shadow strength...if that makes sense...
The other thing to pay attention to is the feeling of life and soul. look at her entire face at once..and read emotion..dont look at the separate parts..look at the whole thing...what does that feel like inside? If you cant quite feel something from it then adjust based on how you would like it to feel..how you would like people to see her mood to be. Also the forward eye seems a bit dark compared to the far off eye..great move on atmospheric perspective though..just dont be afraid to put dark darks in the background too...can always soften them down with edge play for atmosphere to balance it out.

I know that the artist is using Photoshop, but would this video be useful to people working traditionally as well? Is it predominately about using layers, brushes. and stuff like that or does he speak about using lighting, mood, and anatomy type stuff that's useful for anyone? Thanks,

Definitely. I don't have a wacom tablet at the moment since I'd given it to my younger brothers, but it was highly relevant to methods in general. Jason speaks about lighting, mood, and head structures rather than Photoshop techniques. This is usually how most of the demos are. There's always something to get out of it more than just program techniques. Either way, it's also, in my opinion, highly inspirational, so there's more to gain from it than just education.

The info Jason gives throughout is of a "fine arts" background, focusing on canons of portraiture and some art history. You would benefit greatly of this as a traditional artist imo... BUT if you want to wait, Coro has somthing gewd in the editing room it seems ;) his vid about Portrait painting (trad) should be out soon ^^

Zhang Lu (? - 216) was a warlord during the Three Kingdoms era of China. After his grandfather, and then father, he was the third leader of the Celestial Masters, a religious group. He controlled a state in the Hanzhong region, which he had named Han'ning (漢寧) until 215, when he surrendered to Cao Cao, who he would serve until his death one year later.
or
Zhang Lu (Chang Lu, traditional: 張路, simplified: 张路); ca. (1464-1538 ) was a Chinese landscape painter during the Ming Dynasty (1368–1644).
Zhang was born in Kaifeng in the Henan province[1] . Zhang painted landscapes and human figures in a free and uninhibited style.

I finally found time to watch this, in the wee hours last night.
It has solid information for artists of every skill level. I personally found it helpful to watch the traditionally trained ZhangLu, as he painted the most beautiful pictures in digital form. I did not expect the valuable information regarding exploration of the subject’s inner world, since it is not discussed nearly enough and perhaps many artists miss the importance of this step when creating figures from imagination. There are also fine tips on being an artist. Jason is easy on the ears and the soundtrack choices were perfect. Thank you.

One thing I noted (looking at a lot of these pieces) but I don't remember specifically mentioned but implied when he mentioned studying Sargent is that I think a lot of people should also look up articles on edges and edge control. While simple observation of real objects help, one thing I noted with Zhanglu's works is a very practiced and designed sense of edge control.
http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51913 was by Elwell that talked about that practice. So not only keep in mind Jason's lecture, but using this to understand when you paint will help your overall piece too.
Look at Zhanglu's pieces and look at the articles on edges...why did Zhanglu make a hard edge in some places, softer in others? What effect did it have on your eyes, what did it do to the personality of the character he designed?

Hmm with all that makeup i would love to see a girl on these boards do a big write up on what sort of makeup there is how it is applied and what it is supposed to do. I mean us guys can learn a lot by just looking, but i think a lot would appreciate from a deeper understanding. But then again perhaps i should just go google it :D.

Thank you so very much. That was almost /precisely/ what I was going for. Zhang Lu's digi-paintings engrossed me.. even without any music, I was sure I was lost floating into the abyss of a charcoal dustcloud. xOHx :eyecandy:
Wow. That was amazing. There was some sort of mysticism to it all that made it feel almost ethereal and translucent. Definitely worth it, and highly inspirational. A lot of replayability in this one with Zhang Lu's many demos. Thank you Jason and all, truly.

The video is very intense. That is, I feel like it's almost overwhelming with the amount of information you're giving us just in the first 10 minutes. Some of it I already knew, but it felt new in the way you were presenting it and also felt I should probably take notes the second time I watch it just so I take it in better. It's hard not to watch the multiple renderings and lose track of the narattion. Not only does it make you want to try sketching along with it, but you realize there's so much going on with the narration, that I found myself rewinding a lot... this is certainly not a bad thing, but I'm glad this video isn't live!

Dope! One of the best things about these downloads is getting the .psd files. It helps so much to study up close the marks and the actual brushes used and all the surface. It's like being allowed to get your nose up to the work at an art museum without alarms going off.
We usually just see jpgs which blend and blur the pixels. I was studying zhanglus's pics from online and couldn't tell how he made marks. But now with the .psds I see that it's all pretty much one brush at smaller and smaller sizes and subtle value change and can see how the values are put down and with what kind of strokes. So much info there.
Makes me think if people did master copies of this work you could really develop good techniques because in these files you can really see each visible brushstroke and tell what about it makes it work. Where copying from oil painting to PS you have to translate things differently. Anyways good stuff!!

Some suggestions to the people doing portraits: Two of the main technical elements which zhanglu handles so elegantly in the demo is structure and edges.
Look closely at his heads and notice how many straight lines (or shapes rather, not outlines) are used. They are deftly placed there to emphasize structure. A real human has no straight lines, but lines are one of the tools the artist uses to create as strong an expression as possible. This is one of the elements that can make a painting better than a photograph. The ability to do this though, depends on the capacity to identify all the little shapes and volumes and know what to emphasize. Look at Aaron Coberly's gesture drawings for a great example of structure. (http://picasaweb.google.com/aaronpaint/Gestures08#)
Another thing; hard edge does not equal high value contrast.
Notice how in "female 10" there is not a hint of an outline anywhere. It's just edges with different degrees of softness:
http://img529.imageshack.us/img529/2038/zhanglueye.jpg
This is one of the realizations that has helped me a lot in drawing. I recall attempting to draw a portrait of someone where half the head was in shadow, and I was straining really hard to see the shadow side so I could see and draw the outline around the eye. Then I remember Richard Schmid saying "Don't paint what you don't see!". It was so obvious. There were no outlines anywhere.

Great video Jason. Thanks to you, Zhanglu and MassiveDVD for all your hard work in putting it together. Really bang up job. We waited a long time for it and it was well worth the wait.
I can't help but be pleased to see a video that focuses so much on the classic fundamentals of draftsmanship. To me, it seems Zhanglu isn't doing anything particularly different from what one would do with a charcoal pencil on newsprint - in fact, the early block-ins using angles and straight lines to define the general head shape comes right out of Bargue, and using soft marks to indicate placement of the features is exactly the same method we practice at the ateliers and private art schools down here. I loved watching his process. No tricks, no gimmicks, just straight up solid drawing. His portraits remind me a lot of the pieces I've seen from students at the Repin Academy in China, which should come as no surprise considering his background.
There is a wealth of information and guidance here to be found in the video, and can be gleaned from anyone patient enough to ask themselves the question "why?" What is the reasoning behind Zhanglu choosing to make that value darker or lighter? Why did he make this edge soft or hard compared to that edge? Why is he choosing to emphasize detail there but simplifying here? I figure you can probably get a semester's worth of head drawing tips in this video if you keep asking yourself why as you watch it over and over again. Not a bad deal for $20, I'd say!
Anyway, here's my first attempt. I may tweak it more, but eh, I've got work in a few hours and I really should get to bed. Nine more to go from here. I spent a lot of time getting used to his method and configuring the default brush, but once that was out of the way, it was just a matter of playing around and having fun. This isn't completely out of my imagination - I referred back to Zhanglu's pictures for ideas on mark-making, composition, and technique - but a good 90% of it is. From someone who studies mostly with a model in front of him and is often a bit timid about drawing without one, this was a really good exercise for me to go through... so, thanks for the push. I learned an immense amount from doing this.
Looking forward to the next line in this series. Thanks again.

I would like to comment on the text at the end of the teaser about CA. If this site weren't a free place, it'd be like CG Society or any other charge-per-account site of professional or pseudo-professional pomp. This site would be cold and comparably unpopular to whatever the new CA was, because there will always be a site for the people, that is: the poor artists.
Because the funds to these videos are needed to make changes, update the servers, et cetera, they are like a fundraiser in a way, considering the rest of the site’s relatively free. But don't confuse patronage for loyalty or sentimentality. If CA were to become a taxed website, it would all but collapse overnight. The heart, that is: the poor artists, would "jump ship" and doubtless commune together elsewhere, somewhere that was newly "for the people" or "for the community" as this site currently is (and hopefully always will be). The people will always go where the grass in greener (or freer).
This is not intended to be an attack on this website’s recent expensive habits, but an account from my perspective on the future of the internet. If Jason Manley is for the people, he will eventually make these videos free to the unfortunate who can’t afford them or someone else might put them in a torrent because that’s the way these things tend to go.
By mentioning the FBI, Jason (or whoever wrote the text this comment is concerning) seems to be attempting to constrain people by coercion, scaring us by threat of imprisonment into not reproducing this work for communal availability. Although I believe in CA and have purchased many of its wears (including Jason Chan’s great and inspirational tutorials), this coercion is ill-advised because CA is making clear their standing against freedom of information.
In the text this post is concerning, there is mentioned scholarships. If truly scholarships were the aim of these videos, they’d certainly be free, including an address to donate to as means became available to the individual.
I can only hope this post doesn’t rub anyone wrong. If a torrent of this pictorial lecture becomes available, it would be a matter of judgment of means and morals before anyone downloaded it. I’m simply sharing my opinions and concerns and would invite Jason Manley to respond at his leisure.

There is a lot of information on this site that is free. If you search through the site, the professionals here have probably given all the advice featured in the video in their posts at one time or another. But you cannot expect them to give away a product for free that took much of their time and that goes above and BEYOND what the site offers as a base. These videos are good, yes, but they're nothing exceptional when compared to the gracious time and effort the professionals have devoted to helping newbies in the lounge or critique centre, so if some people want to buy extra videos for themselves, it is their prerogative and CA has every right to charge for them to maintain the site where that free advice is given! I can only imagine with the new FREE art cataloguing service how high the costs for bandwidth are now. Not to mention that these people are ridiculously busy with their own jobs and yet still find the time to make videos for us for a VERY reasonable price. As for the FBI warning, is it not reasonable to want to protect their investment, which is for the good of all of us and should be rewarded accordingly?

here's my first attempt. No reference for this one, but the next few I do I'll use reference cos looking at this one I have alot to learn.
I didn't pay much attention to changing brush hardness or anything. just used the same brush whole way through with just different sizes. Will bother with those things on the next one because I'm realising more strongly how important it is to mix hard and soft edges.
So 1 down 9 to go. then when those are done can try negro types, asian, and other races.
Edit: Hey by the way is it cheating to use reference for the assignment? As in, is the point of the excerise forfeit if I copied a photo instead of concepting a character types attitude, appearance, expression, etc.?

Hello Mr Jason Manley, after viewing the video, ive learnt to focus more on human expressions..
Here are my take on the exercises that youve given to your students :)
Do you mind giving me some tips, advices on how should i capture the expression, features in 2min/portrait?
I tried to do it but i couldn't draw it that fast. If i try to draw fast, my construction of head will fail miserably,
if i construct first, it will take me awhile to draw in the features.
However after i construct, the human head moved and i have to reconstruct :/
Oh ive noticed my country are full of stressfull people after starting observing people around me.
Usually i draw emotionless people but after watching the video ill take note of their expressions!
A big THANK YOU for the video!

here chew on this...if we put the downloads (which is the only way we can afford the expenses to continue to run CA) up for free, and like you said, and most of the artists who frequent this site are poor students....do you really think they are going to donate enough money to allow us to continue to run this place? i was a poor student once...but i paid a shit load for art school too.
the opportunity for us to share information we've learned doing our trade in exchange for a small fee to help pay for running costs seems like a win win situation to me. its more than a fair trade, especially if you factor in what older folks like me had to pay for art school, to learn less specific stuff no less...
you say the CA school could easily cover the expenses like you know something. we dont charge what AAU or art center does, because we want to make it affordable to said deserving poor artists. the school isnt a cash cow since it takes people's time and expenses to run. i dont think you realize what goes into running an organization like CA, twinkie.
if you leave due to our "commercialization" please feel free to take the folks who torrent our downloads with you. because if im showing people how to do my job so they can directly compete in the same field as me, id to know that at the very least they donated a small amout to hellp out toward the upkeep of this free web community we run, that ive learned so much off of over the past 7 years.:yayca::yayca::yayca:
