View Full Version : Alla Prima Portrait Painting with Coro - High Def - Available Now!!
MassiveDVD
May 21st, 2009, 03:11 PM
Every Tuesday night the students of the ConceptArt.Org Atelier gather 'round for a round of Alla Prima portrait painting. El Coro runs the show, which is to say that he leads by example and occasionally walks around with a stick to keep the kids in line. He also makes a lot of jokes, though a few of the jokes had to be set aside to make way for the nonstop barrage of painting wisdom contained in this video. Coro begins with good solid basics: his materials, setting up the palette, and the general proportions of a head. The rest of the video is a painting demonstration covering topics ranging from paint application, color, value, form, and overall approach. If painting were a potato, this video would be one hot potato! :yum:
The DELUXE HD version is 1280x720 and includes a second portrait (without narration). 1 hour 41 minutes of content. $30
The SD version is 1024x576 and contains one portrait. 1 hour 14 minutes of content. $20
Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYlYh752aW8
Purchase DELUXE here: http://www.payloadz.com/go?id=897117
Purchase SD here: http://www.payloadz.com/go?id=897124
Looking forward to all the reviews and portraits!! and remember:
It is by will alone that I set my mind in motion. I will practice heads this month. My practice makes me better. :oneye:

wow cool to see peeps interested in this one...we had alot of fun making this video. i love painting portraits...honestly its one of my favorite things to do artwise.
i live to tuesday nights because we have an alla prima class over at the atelier.
there's something about trying to capture a persons likeness that just never gets old. its amazing. and its excellent practice. you cant ever know the planes of the head well enough. i feel like i learn something new every time i sit down to paint someone.
Brashen: dude, trust me, paint is paint. the working rules are different but the visual principals are the same. i feel like painting in more than one medium really opens the doors to experimentation. im always incorporating things ive learned with oils into my digital work, and vice versa.
blah blah blah...anyway, im excited to hear what you all think of it once its out, and i hope you get something out of it...
thanks again for the interest guys.

Coro dont get me wrong I appreciate all mediums, I mean watching Greg paint 'Above the Timberline' was a truly humbling experience. My education in art was very non conventional I jumped from drawing directly into photoshop. So I've been ring to get back to the root of painting for the last 2 years.
Anyways it's excellent your doing this!!

Hell yeah I'm all over it! I got to see Coro paint alla prima in Dallas and it was great! It's funny, usually i find people working with oils work really kind of slowly and methodically, but Coro practically attacks his canvas with strokes that sometimes almost seem frantic, he's applying them with such rapid dabs. And between putting his brush to the canvas, looking at his model and mixing colors, he'll do this thing with his feet where he alternately taps them on the ground like there's an invisible double-bass pedal drum kit he's rocking out on! In a practically still room of twenty people painting, there's just a frenzy of movement where Coro is; and once the dust settles, there's just a bitchin painting left and the smell of linseed oil... Awesome! Looking forward to experiencing the new tutorial format. Long live CA!

I would love for you to release it as either HD or SD. Some streaming video viewers are awful, and I have a really slow internet. If the video viewer cannot be paused while all of it loads, then I (and other people) will only be able to watch it in 5 second chunks. It would make it a lot easier if it was just downloadable.
I know that you want to keep piracy as low as it can, but the fact is, if someone want something bad enough, they will always get it.
As for the video, I literally cannot wait. This is like a dream come true. Coros portraits are amazing, and I believe that some of them can be compared to that of the greats.

Thanks to Massive DVD, Coro, & Jason for putting another great vid together. Ive been hoping another Oil painting Demo would come out.
As informative as Dan's, Shawn's & Gregs Demo's were I still learned alot. Either through approach, or technique.
Even the aspect covered in other demo have been worded different to shine new light or a new angle on something "I thought" I already understood.
Thanks again.

I'm very naive regarding different color pallets..
I was wondering if you could shed more light about the colors you put on your pallet.. have you been working with the same pallet for a long ass time or was it an evolution? what are the ups and downs of the pallet below compared to yours?? is it all personal preference?
so you know where im coming from.. my current pallet is..
titanium white
lemon yellow
cad yellow medium
Alizerin crimson
cad red medium
cerulean blue
ultramarine blue
sometimes pthalo blue, ocher and burnt siena

June 29th, 2009, 02:42 PM
thanks sop much for checking out the video guys! please if y7ou have any ?'s feel free to ask. im happy to answer.
arghmisfit: pallete is all personal preference i think. ive used alot of different colors over the years, and have had as many as 30+ colors simultaneously on my pallette before :O. the colors i use currently are colors and paint types i find useful for painting portraits specifically, but really at the end of the day you could use any colors you want, as long as you understand what they do and how they react to each other. the pallette you are using is fine...its like the standard basic pallette...eveything you need is in there. i personally use indian yellow as my only yellow because its transparent so it tints really well. i also like cad green light for muting flesh tones. i change my pallette fairly often, swapping colors in and out to keep it interesting too. dont be afraid to do that. thats how you will find colors you really lke!
Samuel Gray: i only use turp in the beginning to tone the canvas. i dont use it to clean my brushes as it waters the paint down too much for my taste. i clean my brushes by wiping them on a cloth, nothing more. ts fine if there's still paint in them, as long as i can load tha brush with another color.
BAMartin: great question! im actually just rubbing the brush on the easel to remove some of the paint. i liek to make sure i have the right amount on my brush, so sometimes i need to wipe some off :) consequently, my easel is covered with paint, but it works good!
thanks again so much you guys, and again if you have any questions, post em!

Coro was a great teacher, explaining some great rule of thumbs, and there was some pretty funny bits in there too. Great painting, and amazing process.

We're actually moving away from .mov files so we can get more compatibility with handheld devices.
The only thing different between this video and our other videos is the resolution. The encoding was the same, so I'm not sure why it won't play on your Zune.

Besides ipod, isn't zune the runner up as far as handheld devices? so wouldn't formatting for that be a priority? the accepted file formats are listed below. MPEG4 will practically play on anything. I tried converting it to a useable format and all I hear is the audio and see a green screen. Do you guys use unusual codecs? thanks.
* WMV (Windows Media Video)
* MPEG4
* H.264 codec
Nevermind, I fixed it. Uninstalled the K-Lite codes pack and reinstalled the Windows essensial codes pack, works great!

thanks guys. i have watched it a couple times and really enjoyed it.
to see mr. coro paint is very exciting, because i didn't get a chance
to see him work at the dallas workshop. so here the video was more
impersonal, though much more informative because woudln't be able
to think up questions to ask during the workshop (with my limited
knowledge of oils and paints).
coro: do you prime your canvas with gusso?
how did you start? did you paint in acrylic or did you try all sorts of
mediums at first? and what is ultimately your favorite medium?
much thanks to coro, the staff and all of MB for making this possible.
