Hey CA-addicts!

I'm Tommy and I'm a glorified bum and a major conceptart.org lurker

Art floats my boat and I've loved it ever since I can remember...

I did the whole college bit for a while but had to bolt since I'm as broke as a 3rd world country immigrant can be...(I'm like one of those kids you adopt for pennies...it's tragic)

Anywhoo...I've been self studying with books, dvd's and the internet for most of my "schooling"

CA has been a great resource...but I've never really participated...

Frankly, I've been too much of a wuss and been too intimidated to actually post something instead of just trying to soak up the genius that's on this site...

So why the sudden post? you ask (I'll assume that you did ask since i'm egocentric and pretending that you care really tickles my fancy)

weeeeeell I just really wanted to have a place where I could post some my artwork for posterity's sake...

It would be nice to look back and see my progress or see how far I've come as far as art is concerned...

Just woke up and I'm doing some cast studies mostly value studies for now...

I'm gonna attempt doing color studies later on today since it really is my weakest point right now...it seems like it's either hit or miss, and I just want to be more consistent with it...

found some free time and did a few color studies from nat-geo pics just so i can learn to eyeball colors on the fly...

As much as I'd like crits on these....it really is pretty liberating sort of doing a sketch diary just to get thoughts down and get some sketches put up at least so I can look back on my progress later on...so whether I get some criticism or not, I guess I'll stick to it anyway :D

I've been too lazy to upload stuff since i don't know how to do mass uploads (if it's even possible) and doing them one by one get's somewhat tedious after a while....

neway i figured i'd post up a couple of sketches just for update's sake...

Last one looks great. Her right eye got a bit washed out though... could use a darker value again to better balance the left.

Didn't know what to expect when I clicked this. Very glad I did though. Really fabulous stuff you've got.

That second shark one looks really fabulous. For some reason, the lion one doesn't look right to me. It looks a little too fuzzy on the face, you know? Like, there is too much emphasis on the fur in some places where it wouldn't be that long or noticeable (though the chin and cheek area looks great, it's my favorite part).

And I agree with IanE, her eye does look a bit washed out. A darker value, maybe not precisely the same value as the other eye, would make it look a bit more balanced. And in her mouth also, it looks really flat inside there.

Really wowed by your stuff. ♥

Hey thanks guys, I'd given up on people giving crits on my stuff on here...so this really means a lot :P

@ IanE

Yeah I just looked back at it right now, and it is pretty washed up...I know it's just a study, but now that you pointed it out...I'm itching to fix it! :P her ear is a bit weird to me as well...It could probably use some tweaking... thanks so much for the feedback ^_^

@ DKHutcheson

Hahaha, was it the avatar or the Thread Title that got you worried? :P It might explain why only two people have ever wandered onto here :D

Thanks, I think I focused too much on getting the colors right that I ended up neglecting everything else...lol I got lazy and just used the same brush and repetitive motion...Maybe if i blur or blend it at around that area, it might improve it a bit...

About the grace kelly portrait, yeah I see what you mean about her mouth...I think it was like that on the ref though since it was from an old black and white photo...in any case, it'd be a good opportunity to experiment and come up with some sort of fix for it ^_^ (btw, did you just mean the blacks in the mouth or the whole mouth in general...the lips, theeth, etc?)

Thanks again...I'm still learning and it's hard juggling real life and self teaching this stuff...I wish I could just sit home all day and study and not be bothered with actual work :P unless it's work doing this...hehehe

Cheers guys

This is my entry to the CA contest...

I started it last week and worked on it whenever I got home from work...I haven't had a lot of time to paint ever since I started working again, so it feels pretty good to get back to studying :D

Oh yeah, I wrote a little story to go along with it...Actually...the story came first...I just heard this little monologue in my head from a General desperate to save his king...

anyway...here goes!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Newborn - Death to the King

My name is General Aurelius Denari, and I have always served the king. So it has come to pass that a great tragedy has befallen the kingdom. The king’s brother has slain him where he sleeps, taking his throne by force. It shames me to admit that I was powerless in stopping this, but perhaps all is not yet lost. His infant son bears the mark of kings. He is the rightful heir, and so my servitude is to him. Liberating him from the palace will prove to be a difficult task, but I shan’t fail him as I did his father. My name is General Aurelius Denari, and I shall always serve the king.
