Tablet Skills/Drawing SKills ???

Hey,

Ive recieved a Wacom Bamboo fun Tablet Medium (im still at school) and after using it for about an hour, I wondered....

By using a tablet on my PC on PS, will it improve any aspects of my drawing on paper? I dont normally use colours and I cant paint, so will using colours and learning about them- help me with my overall ART?

I mean, you can't just rely on your tablet to do everything. If you're bad at drawing, a tablet won't magically make you better. You still need to put in the hours, 'n all that.

The bit about the colours bothers me, though. The fact that you asked such an inane question, that is. Just re-read it, then edit it out. lol

In my opinion, a tablet makes drawing harder not easier. Fortunately, it makes drawing with a digital painting program immensely easier, therefore, they are not completely evil. ;)

No matter what you use to draw with, it will benefit you to do it regularly.

Ok...ummm

I mean, the fact that I cant really use colour with (coloured) pencils and I cant really paint (with colours)---- Will I be able to learn about colours/light through colouring digitally (and reading colouring guides for digital art)?

Will it prepare me for painting, or drawing (with colour) on material/paper?


Im not relying on the tablet, and by no means do I think that it will make me draw "better", but say If I was studying anatomy and did my sketches with the tablet- will I improve when I DO draw on paper?

Using a tablet is simply a different technique. Like using pencils is a different technique than using oils, or using crayons. There are basic things (like anatomy or general color theory) that we can learn that we can apply to any technique we use.

But then there are things especific to each technique.

Drawing with a tablet can give you a foundation for painting. If you're bad at color theory, you are bad at color theory. Once you get the hang of color it's just a transition of how to use another tool. If you feel more comfortable using digital colors as a starting point, I say by all means go for it.

I actually learn more about color by using paints and pencils because for me it seems more active. I wouldn't say that applies to everyone though.

Why ask this, do both! It's not like Pencil and Paper are expensive. Why compare and wonder, just do both. I don't see the need to compare. Like someone said, it's just another technique/medium. You have your tablet and program, and paper and pencil are affordable, just draw!

I will still draw with pencil and other types of medium (better make a start a painting soon) but I am enjoying using the tablet at the moment cause its new.

I use my Intuos3 so much now that when I do draw on paper habitually reach for an expresskey/hotkey that isn't there. Beware of this syndrome LOL :D

I can say that the Intuos3 combined with Painter X has helped me feel more comfortable diving into oils, I raised/trained myself to be an acrylic type primarily, using an airbrush and paintbrush for the last 18 years.
