This is the third in the series, or more correctly, the third to be finished. This came with inherent design problems. How to construct a speed-blur base? I played in clay for awhile. I knew I wanted Superman to be massive and have everything taper and blur from his waist down. I tried angled V shapes and collections of lines and zig-zags but everything I tried made him look like he was wearing a skirt. I spent some time looking at Art Deco and back again to Leyendecker and came up with a staggered crystal pattern and treated the speed elements very graphically, especially the back of the cape. And then had the whole thing dissolve into a cloud vapor element. I sculpted additional speed patterns in the interior of the base so, as you move around the statue, the interior and exterior patterns play over each other creating more movement. I used the same effect for Aquaman, Wonder Woman and Batman.

That's the theory, anyway.

As always, hope you like the work.

Wow!!! This is so awesome. You have definitely been more than successful in representing speed and movement. The photo from behind the sculpt showing Superman's cape reminds me of an old superman cover where superman is flying into the sun(By Dan Jurgens I think-) Seriously awesome sculpt. I think I've seen all the sculpts in this series by you and they are all awesome. Kudos :)

Great effect on the speed-blur, Bruck' - and while not a deal-breaker at all, I'm a little 'iffy' on the almost too-pretty stylized look to Supe's face. Was that directed or an influence?

Too bad you don't post many wips - would love to see'em.

Keep up the awesome work - you're a true master!

- EDIT -

In catching up with the older posts, I caught the Leyendecker influence - Great job.
