Glowing cats might look cool but couldn't possibly survive as pets or in any outside environment. They're just acting as test-beds for medical research.

They're pretty cool, though I think what they're supposed to prove is even cooler. Clone research is really neat. Relatively recently, I think, some scientists managed to clone a rat that had been in the freezer for 16 years (IE there was cellular damage since it was just kind of chucked in there).

I'd want a glowing kitten if cats didn't love to sleep by your face. They'd keep me up all night.

Leopards and ilk are meant to be wild, not domestic felines. They need to be fed and well taken care of and do not do well in the wild. They were bred to live with humans and near granaries and other food storage facilities. Since we don't need them for pest control so much and the vast majority of cats kept are purel for the pleasure of having a companion it makes sense to release these on the pet market.

Ashtonw - Not necessarily, most animals have a wider range of spectral vision than humans and many can see in the UV range (birds included).

Apart from Australia (and Florence Italy), there aren't many feral cats. That said, one should always use caution in introducing new species to the wild. It's hard to tell what the consequences will be and they're usually disastrous, somehow. Although, flourescent rats in urban centers might be easier prey, and help sanitize places. But then natural selection would simply weed out that gene and the rats would thrive just as before...

They only glow under UV light. They will look a bit off-color in regular light and but don't glow in the dark.

Glofish have been on the market for several years in the US, but are illegal in some countries. The debates over them in aquarist forums have been...amusing at best, and rather heated at worst. Personally I consider them to be horribly tacky looking, because even without UV light they are neon colored, but at least they chose a really hardy species to augment.

Friend of mine had an Emperor scorpion as a pet...it's especially creepy after they molt because the old exoskeleton still glows, and it looks like two of them are in there. XD

Who knows....there may be a hidden side effect of the gene addition. Like maybe it will be very friendly and then one second all of sudden it jumps at you and rip your throat out. Or it accumulates radioactive compounds in its body until it reaches critical mass and BOOM!

God forbid that these freaks mate with other cats and spread their altered genes around!
