ROUND #158 :: The GREEN FAIRY

DESCRIPTION

The GREEN FAIRY

This one has been requested a few times, so here you are. The personification of absinthe, often referred to as "The Green Fairy".

Illicit, mysterious, and often thought of as an aphrodisiac and narcotic (both of which probably aren't true), the Green Fairy was a symbol for artists around the turn of the century.

Let's see your own interpretations. Keep in mind you don't have to do this in any specific way - If you don't want to glamorise drinking, feel free to make her the villain in the piece. Think she's treated unfairly? Make her the hero.

Just keep in mind she is Absinthe Personified, so you will want to tie in elements into your drawing to make that clear.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Absinthe

Please double check posting guidelines!

------------

ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?

--------------------

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i222/ChowPics/frame.jpg
:right: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
:right: SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:
Chow##_Nickname
example: "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg"

THE REST IS EASY:
1: No comments before poll is set. They WILL be deleted with utmost malice and petty grumbling. >:{
2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
3: Good luck to all.

Please review these helpful reminders if you have not done so already.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO WRITE YOUR COPYRIGHT INFORMATION UNDER THE IMAGE IN THE FINAL BURNING THREAD SO I DON'T HAVE TO HUNT YOU DOWN LATER!

---

Quick Check: Have You Submitted Your Chow Properly?

- is it named correctly? (ie, "CHOW#100_Oregano.jpg")
- has it been uploaded using the attachment editor?
- have you also uploaded or linked to your wips?
- have you followed the brief?

Good luck!

I'm quite prepared for this to miss out on the poll: I can hardly claim Tinkerbell's costume as my own design and showing 'absinthe personified' certainly took a bit of a backseat to showing a happily inebriated Tink.

We've been very nice this time and I've even renamed a couple of people's entries who didn't pay attention to the instructions. I WON'T MAKE A HABIT OF THIS! PLEASE READ THE RULES IF YOU DON'T KNOW BY NOW! As if...

PuppyKitten
May 18th, 2009, 05:30 PM
Migsta- Oh she's hideous (in a good way!) The lighting in this is absolutely amazing.

Sekino- Adorable!!! This looks like a cross between a children's illustration and a pin-up. I'm so impressed you did this with watercolors!

AvisNocturna- The skin and hair are perfect. Just perfect. I also adore her little crown. My only crit would be the wings. They don't quite fit the style of the rest of the picture. It still looks great though.

Missile- I love the concept (one of the few super-original designs so far). I also love the eye-patch and the background. Keep it up!

Amber Alexander- Pairing purple with green can be tough, but you did a great job picking the right hues. I love the way the back of her dress looks!

scottmcd- Classic pin-up. I love her expression and the bg. Her wings seem a tad flat compared to her beautifully-rendered body though...

hungryan- Wow, neat! I love the look of all the heavy lines and the orange tones with the green. Makes this illustration look like an old stained-glass window almost.

windsrock- I really like her anatomy, and I have to say kudos to you for drawing pubic hair. Nobody ever draws ladies with pubes anymore. :P

Angel Intheuk- Dynamic pose and bright colors. Good job!

Artofinca- Yummy textures. I love the roughness of this image. It gives it so much personality. She's really beautiful.

telamon- I really like the mood of this picture. And the rough strokes are terrific. The man's head seems a little too big for his body, I think... Otherwise it's good. Sorry it got cut :(

Liv- Such beautiful wings! And the green under-lighting fits the tone of this really well. She's really beautiful, even if she has gone a bit nutty. Hehe.

Arthemis IX- Hands down one of the best ideas. That broken bottle is drawn soooo well!

IceMoon- Aw, she's so cute and innocent looking. It's nice to see a version of her that isn't slutty or evil. Great job!!

curly- Loooooove her hair and face. This is a really solid design, and painted really well.

Lotta- Haha, this is hilarious. Great idea. Not sure how I feel about the wiggly lineart, but the image is so cute in general.

Poshspice- As I said previously, you nailed this one (like you always do). Some of the best use of texture. Her face is sooo gorgeous. I'm pretty sure she's trying to seduce me...

AikidoAl- Funky! You have all my respect for doing something other than a beautiful, sexy girl. Great job on the hands, too. Sorry you got cut :(

JailHouseRock2- Yes yes yes. This is awesome and creepy as hell. Perfect level of saturation, and great stylization.

NoShot- I like the vintage 20s look, for sure. I do with the wings were more defined. They are an interesting shape, but I almost didn't even notice them!

Johann de Venecia- You have style to burn, dude. And I have always adored a dark, earthy color palette. Great job!

wheezy- I like that you were bold and gave her red hair and a pink dress. You communicated who she was without relying entirely on green. There are a few areas that could use some polish, but the areas that are more "finished" look really nice.

Clochette- Very very neat. Love the pinks with the greenish-blue. I also looove her anatomy.

Jefita- Love the modern spin on this. You captured a lot of motion and you color really well. The base of that glass looks photo-realistic!

no_name_brand- She is totally cute. Love her outfit and hair!

Lt. Action- I like the line-art and facial expression. The bg may be over-powering your main figure though. Great wing design. Really fantastic.

MONGOSMASH!- Very detailed. I like it, but the purple thing in the bg is distracting for me. I barely even noticed the cutest part (The sugar cube on her butt).

Ronpower- Really cute idea. I love how you handled her anatomy. :)

Rodimus25- Really beautiful colors and textures. I love her skin patterns!

Slash- Hi! Finished or not, this looks great. I love her face. The pouring water, and the green rim lighting in the glass look AWESOME. Just awesome.

davidmcleod- HAHAHAHAHA.... Ha... hahahaha. Oh dear.

MichaelNoel- It's very beautifully painted. The pose and light makes it hard for me to see the character design. But her face looks lovely!

Chronoperates- Terrific color palette. Her wings look phenomenal!

Tommoy- Cute as a fucking button. Beautiful colors and lighting (especially on the tree)

Lakeland- Very dynamic. I love the "scene", the colors, and her face.

Matt Dixon- Of course this looks awesome as hell. You did a great job coloring it. And look, you made it to the poll!

IIKII- Really unique concept. The figure looks great. The green might be a bit over-powering though...

NicHols- Fun color scheme and reallllly incredible set up/ composition. Beautiful job!

blackcherry- Cute little design. Very fun.

Artina- Beautiful girl and beautiful wings. I like how there's a lot of blue in the greens you chose.

NickTrip- Whoa. Terrifying. If you're not already a concept artist for some studio specializing in horror, you should be.

Auren- Love the pose and all that hair. The little glowing lights add a lot as well.

Garth Cochrane- Love her face to bits. The lighting is perfect, too!

blau- I really like the dress color, and the bg design. Your original sketch had some loose flowing lines that you lost when you colored it. Which is a shame. But it still looks very good.

flashrabbit- I love that she's not green. Her gray skin make her look more intimidating and fit the color scheme well. You did a great job rendering the boy as well.

PuppyKitten- Learn anatomy, dumbass.

Vargo- Such beautiful pencil work! Wow!

Wolfentir- I like how curvy you made her. And the distortion in the glass looks neat too. Maybe her head is a touch too small?

Mercuralis- Just beautiful. So vivid, and intense!

Ostrander- Love the sketchiness. It give the skin a weird texture that fits the creepy design.

Vorace- Your colors are always the best. This is no exception. Wonderful.

rinjii- I like the texture, but it overpowers your art a little bit. The pose looks cute, but I can't see it as well as I'd like. :(

Max Martelli- This is beautiful. You have such an odd way of painting. It must have taken ages!!

first off... HOLY SHIT I MADE IT TO POLL!!! *dies*

i honestly thought there would be too many flaws for that to be possible-especially with the kickass caliber of work also in the poll, so thanks folks for raising my confidence!!

PuppyKitten- looking back on it now, you are absolutely right about not being able to see the pose as well as i had intended. i think i still have a shit-ton to learn when it comes to coloring pieces after i pass the grayscale phase. i didn't see it before cuz the haze of trying to finish it in time got the better of me. i'm definitely going to revisit this later on and refine it so that the pose is easier to read.

and i think i see what you mean about the texture. i was hoping to go with the 'discarded circus poster' vibe, but maybe i chose too wrinkled a paper source?

thank you so much for the critique! :)

PuppyKitten

rinjii: Yeah, I could see the look you were going for. I think lower opacity (just a bit) on the texture layer would have been a nice touch. That's all. :)

Voted for AvisNocturna because I liked it the most from the beginning.
And for David Mcleod for an awesome idea awesomely done.
And for Clochette for the beautiful image.

Puppykitten, yours is probably the most beautiful pic, for me, but then I'm missing the concept. The idea behind the character. Other than the hair/cascade, in this image the girl tells me little of herself.

Voted for a few, but liked Nichols and Vargo, well he just slammed this one outta the park. I liked the fact that I could look at the image, in both Vargo's and Nichols' and know what I was looking at instead of just some pretty little vague thing.

Also dug Mercurialis' as well.

Here are my votes:

Garth Cochrane- I think your fairy embodies the spirit of a good drink very accurately: Slightly uncouth yet jolly. Even though she's no 'classical' beauty, I think she's a very cute and engaging character.

Tommoy- I just love the natural setting and the nonchalant attitude.

Jefita- Nice 'modern' take on the fairy; playful and great sense of movement.

Clochette- Sensuous and otherworldly. The character is so expressive, both curious and mildly annoyed, like I'd assume a fairy would be upon encountering a human... The colour scheme is gorgeous.

JailHouseRock2- It's cute, creepy and funny (not necessarily in that order ;)). Overall, great character and a very different take on the 'fairy'. I think I'll stick with wine.

I'll try to comment on others tomorrow: So many great ones this time around!

I was looking for Posh' entry to vote on it and wondered where on earth it went. It did cross my mind, that he withdrew it, because he'd very likely win and he probably wins so often, that he thought he'd give others a go. Or some such.

A lot of really good entries. I was surprised to see the illustrations of fat people in green, but they are wonderful! If nothing else, alcohol is fattening, because of all the sugar in it.

The vintage styles sported here, and on such short notice, are impressive.

Wish I had time to give a solid critique to everyone. We'll see how much I can get through.

Migsta: Doesn't exactly make me want to try absinthe, but I guess that's the point. :) The wet texture on the stomach doesn't work for me mainly because it doesn't match the rendering style of the face and rest of the piece. I have that same mismatched rendering style complaint about my own piece too. I like the overall pose and concept. Nice foot.

Sekino: Nice work and it's nice to see alternate styles here too. I think I see what you were going for the left hand, but I'm not sure it comes across. Great shading around the bum and legs.

AvisNocturna: Like this one a lot. I could see spending a littl emore time on the wings. I get the sense that she's pretty to look at but is a real force of chaos.

Missile: Like the leaning Eiffel Tower and the sugar cube on her head. The lower dress loses form I'm not sure what it becomes.

Amber Alexander: Neat thing with the scarf and reflection. I should have said this before, but I think I'd have tried something other than a straight on face shot - that is, had a slight tilt for her head. There are lots of pictures of belly dancers on the web that would be good reference. Out of curiosity, did you do the face first and then come up with a pose for the body or did you do the entire figure first? I still miss the scarf wings you had at one point, but I like what you did with the dragonfly style too.

scottmcd: To comment on my own for a second, I don't like how the wings came out. There are too many inconsistent styles, with the background looking artificial and the wings looking flat. I think I'm going to keep going on it to try to unify things.

hungryan: Way, way better than the first concept. I like this one a lot, particularly the wings. vote

Windsrock: Not exactly sure what to comment on. Rather than specific rendering or construction advice, I think I'd concentrate on the basic concept. You've drawn a decent figure, but she's not really doing anything and there's little context. So, for example, why is she in that particular posture and what does it reveal about her character. I'm not sure if you were going for dramatic, intimidating, awe inspiring, etc. I feel like the leg turning into a drip is an afterthought nod to the brief. Doing quick sketches and thumbnails ahead of time can help with that if you don't already do it.

Angel Intheuk: Nice idea and figure. The only thing I see that bothers me is the cheeks. Those naso-labial folds are intense - see what it's like without them. (I got to use "naso-labial folds" in a sentence! I'm easily amused.)

Artofinca: Nice figure and rendering. I think the background kind of overpowers her a little bit, but not a whole lot.

Telamon: Same comments as from the WIP thread.

Liv: It's bondage fairy! :) I both think it's funny and a good idea and at the same time am not sure it communicates anything about absinthe to me. I'm kind of glad she's strapped up. I'm not sure I'd survive if she got loose.

Arhemis IX: I like the concept and the rendering a lot. My only complaint is that the expression on her face is completely uninterested and neutral. I like the border treatment.

IceMoon: Wow on the legs. and torso. Nice glass rendering too. I like her expression too. The only thing I can think of to improve is the rendering on the hand that we can see - it's a bit flat.

Curly: I like the suggestion of wings. I still think the hand is kind of just hanging out there. I like the skirt treatment (the green part). While her raised arm does look like a woman's arm, it also looks quite defined and buff. Especially the transition from deltoid to bicep and the bicep. I think you nailed the wrist. Nice work.

Lotta: It's my favorite pose here. "Absinthe-minded" indeed (chucks an eraser at you). ;) I don't think the warping of the glass works, though - I'd have preferred it to be a smooth globe with only what you see through it refracted.

Poshspice: I actually did get to vote for you. I totally understand why you pulled it, being the moderator and all, but it is a very nice piece. My perception isn't quite to the point where I see anything to critique. Once it gets there I'll let you know. :)

AikodoAL: She's a creepy one - one of those dark fairies I guess. I like the webbing on the hands. The torso and lower abdomen is kind of formless, and there are other anatomy issues (closest knee, shoulder, etc.). That's the kind of stuff that will fix itself with practice and life drawing. The concept comes through loud and clear, which is good.

JailHouseRock2: I like the transluscent shirt, and I still like the way you've handled the bottle and liquid inside it. Given the cartoony nature of the rest of it, I could see having a more exaggerated hip and waist treatment. Not sure, though.

NoShot: Good pose and concept. The facial proportions are off - I've personally always had trouble with upshots of the face.

Johann de Venecia: Wow, really nice. The bottom of the picture is muddy and indisctinct. It almost reads as a form of something, but not quite. I think it distracts from the main focus a little bit.

That's all I have time for right now. Hopefully I'll get to pick up where I left off later.

scottmcd: maybe I didn't make it obvious enough but her head is tilted down, I'll have to work on that. If you look at the WIPS the origional face is straight on and very plain. But to answer your question I try to get a reference for a pose I like first, I did use a belly dancer for this one actually :p I had to make up her backleg because it was covered in fabric in the reference but the part i'm not that happy with are the stings of beads, they dont look real to me.

There are some really beautiful entries up. I wasn't entirely sure how many we're supposed to vote for so I just went for two - Chronoperates because it was the most appealing character design to me (and that does seem to be what the main focus should be for these) with the almost tribal marks on the body, and Johann de Venecia because there is something quite epic about that one - the style of it reminds me of a vintage poster but with a dark fantasy twist.

Missile: Like the leaning Eiffel Tower and the sugar cube on her head. The lower dress loses form I'm not sure what it becomes.

Thank you for the comment - I'm not even sure myself what was going on with the dress to be honest. Something between fabric and tentacles lost in a mess of blurred digital paint. Really need to work on drawing more realistic cloth before I go trying anything like that again.

scottmcd: Thanks for your kind words. I'm a bit dissapointed that almost noone likes my stuff, (I thought it turned out pretty well, so I'm a little suprised about it) but hey... maybe next time.
I think I did my stuff with comments in the WIP thread, so that's about it. :)

hungryan: It's easy to say, but try not to let the number of votes you get affect your view of a piece's quality. It's only natural, but votes in an activity like CHoW have a bias toward a certain style. Things that deviate from that style don't get as many votes but can be just as successful at what they were trying to do. I don't think it's wrong, but I do try to keep it in mind.

Honestly, I thought the style of your image was cool... but the image itself didn't make much sense to me. Her legs were really out of proportion to her body, and those green things on top of her head really distracted from her wings (which I thought were pretty epic in concept). I'm still not sure what the green things on her head are supposed to be. Are they hair? Are they massive antennae? The idea behind her sleeves also seems somewhat better than the execution. They look really uncomfortable, and like she wouldn't be able to move her arms much.

Compositionally you have all these elements that are pulling away from your main figure, rather than drawing the eye to it. The poor glass of absinthe is lost outside of the frame, and it even takes awhile for me to notice it.

I really did like the style though... sort of medieval tarot card looking. Very cool. I just felt like overall it could have been pulled together a little more tightly.

Mercuralis: Those things on her head are 2 giant leafs rolled up. I was thinking I do something crazy about the design of her costume, because usually I make boring, too mundane concepts. I don't think the same about compositional problems, but maybe I'm still too connected to the image. But I think I should work on something else and forget about this really. :)

For this round my votes go to:

flashrabbit: This was possibly my favourite piece. I found it original and different from the rest of the selection and I loved the whole scene you potrayed her in. Having her coming out of the glass and pouring the liquid in the guys mouth is great. It also has a dark feel to it.

Chronoperates: I loved the whole final rendering of this piece. It's dark, detailed and the textures and properties of the different materials have been potrayed well. I especially love her absinthe spoon wings!

Matt Dixon: Really like your version of tinkerbell as the absinthe green fairy. It's a fun concept which you pulled off well :)

There's some really great entries here, once again it was tough to pick three. Nice work everyone!

Clochette's piece is rocking my socks.

I also dug Jefita's cute punk fairy.

Nichols layout really grabbed my eye.

Vargo's graphite technique is very nice.

Mercuralis has a nicely polished fairy and I dig the little skull.

Came close to voting for Matt Dixon's Tinkerbell/Green Fairy mashup, because it was really well executed, but I felt it was a little too close to Original Tinkerbell. Still, very nice job.

Of the bottle-as-clothing fairies, I gave my vote to Arthemis IX, because I saw that one before Curly's. (Also while Curly's is very nice, I can't help wondering how the inverted absinthe skirt works, and it breaks my brain.)

I also dug Max's Van Gogh, with the little hint of Van Gogh brushstrokes, although it didn't make my short list.

Lots of neat pieces and different styles this round. I admit to being slightly disappointed that I didn't get to see JessiBean's colours for her WIP, but understand why she and PoshSpice might choose to not go further, given their wins in the past.

A few more...

wheezy: I think too much is still soft and fuzzy. The face and shoulder leaves have detail, but the wings should probably have it too at least. Reference for the wings would be good, and she's stiff. I like the hair and those shoulder leaves.

Clochette: Like everyone, I like this one. :) I imagine it's a conscious choice, but I could see varying the line weight more. vote

Jefita: I already mentioned liking the hair thing. The belt buckle is great, and I like her feet and how it looks like those might be tattoos, but maybe they're not.

No Name Brand: First thing that jumps out at me is that the far side of her chest couldn't really be attached to the torso as it's drawn. Pun intended, I guess. I like the treatment of the torso, though, except for that. The glow on the wings is nice and not overdone. The placement of the pelvis and how the legs connect seems lost. I imagine that you drew it before adding the skirt. Also, how is she sitting on the spoon? It looks at first like she's astride it, especially given how her arms are gripping it. But it goes behind the far leg.

Lt. Action: Cool take on the wings. The total saturation is still a little hard to look at.

Mongosmash: The green fairy elements seem like an afterthought and aren't really connected to the picture. The head dress thing is particularly flat compared to the style of the woman. The weight on her hands is resting on empty air rather than the edge of the shot glass. My guess is that you found a reference picture to draw from before you had a concept for the picture. Though I admit to disliking her pose and expression, I think the drawing of the woman herself is well done, but I'd rather see the good drawing in service of the concept, not the other way around.

RonPower: Fun concept and good expression on her face to go with it. It might look better to actually paint the letters instead of use a font.

Rodimus25: I thought the leaves coming off of her back/butt worked better than the final version. It reads for me as tentacles coming up to grab her. No, I haven't watched inappropriate anime recently, why do you ask? I like the style and the hair. The thighs seem flat, but the depth returns over the calves, especially when you get to the feet - good job there. I'm not sure what ties this particular green fairy to absinthe.

'k, page 1 done...

So much great work, thanks so much for the kind words and crits guys!

I'll just comment on a some atm, don't have that much time, will get to the rest later.

Garth Cochrane- Dude nice as lighting on this one, good to see a fat fairy the remains cute. Nice work!

curly- Great colour in this one, cool use of the glass too:)

Johann de Venecia- I always love your style, great colours as well, not sure about the anatomy on the guys chest tho, but still great piece! You got my vote!

no_name_brand- Sexy as heel, love the stockings!

Migsta- Unlike Garth's this ones fat as fu*k but no way cute. That's why I love it, great rendering and lighting! YOU got my vote.

IceMoon- Great expression, and nice use of reds!

Rodimus25- Cool stuff, almost loks alein, dose't scream absinthe too me tho. Nice work all the same!

Sekino- One of my favs, love how simple it is, and am still amazed you did this with watercolour! Very cute, and love your style, You got my vote.

Slash- I know you rushed this one man, but it still looks awesome!

Tommoy- Cute as cute mate, could use some better contrast, and I'm not sure about the anatomy round the belly, looks slightly off (but wtf do I know). Love the tree too!

Jefita- You already I love this, one of the most fun ones in my mind!

flashrabbit- Not sure about the skello arm, but love the idea!

clochette- What can I say? I love you and I love this piece. You got my vote.

Vargo- great colours and presentation, and again love the stockings!

PuppyKitten- This is an interesting one. Probably the most beautifully painting and presented piece, but (and again, what do I know) her anatomy and proportions seem a little out. Just like Clo's I love the waterfall hair, and the angel wings. Even tho there are some faults, you got my vote.

ArthemisIX- Great use of the bottle, nice work!

Matt Dixon- I am such a fan of your work mate, but I think this fairy's a little to much like tinkerbell. But amazing rendering as always, so as much as I love it I could not vote yours.

Ronpower- Haha, nice idea, love her eyes!

AvisNocturna- Awesome work, love this one too, cool little crown, and great expression, not sure about the wings tho.

NoShot - every vintage, cool style!

Mercuralis- Another one of my favs, Best colours in my mind, really awesome greens, beautiful presentation, and I like the sugar skull! You got my vote.

More to come later, great work everyone!

What I was looking for in a depiction of The Green Fairy/Absinthe was:

-- decadence
-- sexuality (not the same as decadence)
-- beauty (not the same as sexuality)
-- danger (not the same as... well, sometimes it is)
-- and otherness, the sense of being in a dream or vision

There were a lot of high-quality entries in this CHOW. But, in trying to keep to a semi-reasonable number of votes, I ended up voting for: Johann de Venecia, Nichols, Artofinca, Clochette, Vargo, Liv, and Vorace.

Honorable mentions: Ron Power's mugshot Fairy, and Sekino's cutie-pie Green Fairy (which reminds me of some of the work seen on the French art blogGirls And Roses.

Some comments.

Migsta / Really cool texture light on the stomach. The light works great.

Sekino / Very cute, I always appreciate some traditional on these activities.
Looks like she's missing a bellybutton?

AvisNocturna / Wings look a little off compared to the rest, love the hair and face.
Nice touch with the "green fairy" font :)

Missile / The dress looks to solid, almost like thick hair. Also some shadows would add alot I think.

Amber Alexander / Nice job on the fabric.

scottmcd / I would also look shocked if I was caught naked in a drink ;P
There is some anatomy problems and the stuff you already commented on yourself.

hungryan / It was kinda hard to see that the things on her head were giant leafs at first.

Windsrock / The stomach area looks weird. Also the eyes disappear somewhat being the same color as the skin.

Angel Intheuk / Nice job on the hands. The light on the dress looks to strong.
And how the dress is on her legs, almost looks like it's pants then dress below knees.

Artofinca / Nice textures and figure. Her head looks a little loose and far to the left.

telamon / Like the tiny wings, and that she robs him heh.
The green light on the back on the mans head is weird, where does it come from and why is it only there.

Liv / A fellow swede :) Nice job. I really like the wings.

Arthemis IX / Nice idea with the broken bottle as a dress :)

IceMoon / Cool pattern on her legs and nice job on the glass.

curly / Very nice, I like the design.

Lotta / Love the facial expression, very cute :)

Poshspice / :) Nice as always.

AikidoAl / Very alien like, does she swim around in the absinthe ;O

JailHouseRock2 / Awesome :)

NoShot / Like the vintage, the glass looks a little flat.
And the wings might have looked better if you made them more solid closer to the body.

Johann de Venecia / Love it. Nice colors and motion in the drawing.

wheezy / Maybe some harder edges there and there otherwise pretty solid.

Clochette / Nice color, love the waterfall hair. Maybe some red shade on the ground to connect the incoming light?

Jefita / The transisition from liquid to hair looks great. Nice job :)

no_name_brand / Cool outfit. Legs look a little off.I almost expected her to ride the spoon like a broom :P

Lt_Action / I like the expression, almost like she leers at someone and entices them with a bag of sugar.

MONGOSMASH! / The purple and the light behind her head are very obtrusive.
And the headgear? looks a little unfinished compared to the rest.

Ronpower / Is that a tattoo of a martini glass? Could use some more background color to make the character pop more.

Rodimus25 / Nice skin colors. As someone else already mentioned, I think it works better with the larger leaves.

to be continued....

Wow...so many entries: I've done some comments and crits to put my 2 cents worth in

Migsta: One of my favs. The mood is great, the tone, colours and lighting are spot on. The wet texture reallys sets it off...love it
Sekino: Love it, she is cute and her 'bra' is sweet, you're helping to inspire me back to the watercolours with this.
Avis Nocturna: This is another great one in the round. Everything is lovely, just her hands and legs that seem abit off. her hands look a bit claw like. Otherwise...great job!
Missile: LIke the concept and stylization, tis a shame about the skirt, I get lost with rendering fabric too, it is essential to have reference so you can be sure exactly where it's going before rendering.
Amber Alexander:Lovely character design and costume. Nicely rendered textures, but her proportions do look a bit out and does detract from it a bit.
Scottmcd:Thanks for your crit- naso-labial folds!! nice word, glad I could help you use it :D. You're right about her face, I get stuck inbetween realistic and stylized sometimes and get confused which way to go, I will redo her face though.
on yours: I love the layout and idea, the placement of all the pieces works really well, only crit is your rendering seems a bit mis-matched...just needs a bit more work I think..nice
hungryan: Like the woodblock effect very much only thing that stands out is her upper arms and legs are proportionally too long.
windsrock:nice picture! even though it's unfinished it's a nice take on her.
Artofinca: nice colours and pose, her head does look a bit detached though, needs to be further to the right.
Telamon: Interesting concept - like the sketchy style. her hand does seem too small though.
Liv: Love it! The pose and rendering is just sweet, her face is cute and the smoke/water effect is nice. I think though that i prefer the background in your last WIP, just a touch more colour.
ArthemisIX: Love the idea and colours, the symmetry in the bottle is a little off, but only if you really look. nice pic
Icemoon: gorgeous - like the japanese feel and her tattoos are cool
Curly: sweet! looks like a childrens illustration out of a book I once had.
Lotta: hehehehe great idea - proportion and line needs some more time on it but the colours are lovely
Poshspice: What can I say? Absolutely gorgeous! :)
AikidoAL: Nice alien/fairy concept, the lighting and colours work well.
JailhouseRock2: Fantastic! Love the textures and just realised she has green snot coming out of her nose...nice touch! :)
Noshot: 20's faiy, nice clothing and design, her shoes are a bit distracting, a bit big I think.
Johann de Venecia: Beautiful! colours and layout is spot on...like looking at it
Wheezy: lovely fairy, hair really stands out.
Clochette: Bloody inspiring!!
Jefita: Really cute, love her clothes and her belt buckle..also her 'boots' are really nicely done
no name brand: Great tights and pose - really nice
LTActoon: Lovely fairy the stylization is cool - the wings don't seem to match the rest of her though don't look like they belong her body.
MONGOMASH: Cheesecake pose! I had the same idea..lovely rendering is it colour pencil? I agree with the comment about the background, would work better with a plain one.
Ronpower: Sweet! love the concept, her expression and wings
Rodimus: I like the insect-likeness you have there and the colours a lovely, nice work!
Slash: Even though it's slightly unfinished I didn't notice straight away, the face, sugarcube and her wings are really lovely
davidmcleod: hahahahaha Love it!! he looks like a bassist I know
MichaelNoel: Like the intimacy and sketchy quality of this piece. shame her hand is not more defined though, can't really make out any detail there.
Chonoperates: Gorgeous! concept is original and her wings are cool! Only crit is her tattoos/body paint look unfinished, I think it worked better without them like in your second WIP (can see more detail)
Tommoy: Love it!! she is so cute and the colours are bright and clean. I think I prefer the original sketch for the pose but her face and the glass in the finished piece are cool, I can see why you changed it.
Lakeland: cool idea - the cloth in the bottle is lovely, her face does seem a bit flat though just needs a little more work on it.
Matt Dixon: Brilliant!! inpsired idea...love her tattoo!
IIKII: cool idea - very ethereal but futuristic, I think the plainer background worked better but that's just my preference.
NicHols: Great stylization and rendering...cool hands and feet
Blackcherry: clever! and your fairy is so cute. like your style
Artina: Pose, hair and costume styling and wings really stand out - one of my faves - lovely
NickTrip: Dark! she looks more 'undead' than fairy but I like the different take on it.
Auren: Really lovely - beautiful hair, definitely looks magical
Garth Cochrane Perfect!! Just realised she's farting hahahaha :D excellent!
blau!: Sweet design - Love her style and the background is lovely
flashrabbit: Thanks as well for the crit on mine, I liked her hands too, enjoyed doing this one think I've come quite a way learning photoshop but you're right, I need to practise my cloth and textures -
On yours - I really like it, it's a cool piece, looks like concept art for an asian horror flick. nice work!
Puppykitten: thanks for the crit - I liked the colours too.
- on yours: It's absolutely gorgeous! - another fav of mine in this round the colour and style is gorgeous and her hair and skin is spot on. the only crit I have is that her ankle is too thick for her leg, does stand out a bit from the rest of her as she's so delicate looking. :)
Vargo: lovely - colours are bright but not too overpowering. love the rendering and pose/hair/cloth...sweet!
Wolfentir: Like the amazonian feel to her - nice pic.
Mercuralis: anothe fav - love the overall design and the burlesque feel about her..great job!
Osrtrander: Scary...very nicley done!
Vorace: LIke how you'r not obvious with the green skin and her head dress is amazing nice work!
rinjii: like that she's sat on the cube, nice idea - you're drawing does get lost in the vivid bright colours and texturing which is shame
max martelli: Gorgeous! more impact without the wings but does look a bit devoid of reference to absinthe...maybe a bottle tucked in his back pocket? anyway it's a really lovely painting, you got skills!

phew!! that was more like a whole days pay worth let alone 2 cents...what is that in the current exchange rate? :P

Garth Cochrane Perfect!! Just realised she's farting

Wait, what?? Hey I didn't see that either! I retract my vote!! Just kiddiiing: Actually, I'd vote twice if I could ;)

Some comments. Just so you know, I voted for the characters that grabbed be the most as The Green Fairy at first glance. But I really think this was one of the highest quality round I've seen so far :D

(Though I was also looking forward to Poshspice and Jessibean's pieces... :()

Max Martelli- The image and rendering are astonishing. My only issue with it is that I'm drawn to the entire image and its 'story', not the fairy character herself. As an illustration, it rocks: The contrast between the green and red hair is a great focal point.

Lt.Action- The character design has a lot going for it. But the colours are very distracting to me: The soft pinks, bright red and dark green compete with each other. Also, the style of the wings (very 2D and stylized) doesn't match the style of the fairy. Among these elements, I feel the character got lost.

Rinjii- I also feel the character got lost because of the background and colours. The striped papery texture and the text are more defined than the fairy.

Vorace- Wonderful image! I just wouldn't identify her as the Absinthe fairy without the caption.

Wolfentir- I like the composition, but it doesn't look quite finished to me. The character and elements seem undefined. I suspect you may have ran out of time.

Mercuralis- Beautiful! Without knowing it's absinthe, I would think it's an evil magic potion because of the bubbles and skull ;) But I love the image and fairy!

Ostrander- Same here: I'm thinking 'poison' fairy, not absinthe fairy. But I really dig the style.

NoShot- Nice roaring 20's idea and good job on that dress. Proportionally, she seems very tall, even acounting for the style.

Avis Nocturna- Lovely character and image. Perhaps the wings could use a bit more definition, especially since they are a large element.

Angel Intheuk- Sweet fairy and vibrant colours. The glass and spoon could use a bit more detail, though.

IIKII- Interesting image and pretty girl; but to be honest, I get neither a fairy nor absinthe feel.

Blackcherry- I think the sharp contrast between the bright green, red and gray makes it a bit harsh; but cute character!

Ron Power- Haha! Good idea. Maybe a bit monochromatic. Love the wings!

Missile- I really like the style and details at the top of the image; but the bottom half seems somewhat unfinished. Cute girl!

Michael Noel- Good character, but I feel I don't see enough of her since the liquid hides most of her body.

Mongosmashi- Interesting character and the anatomy is great but the rib-cage is disturbing (on purpose?). I feel the colours and background don't fit the delicate pencil strokes on the girl and glass.

Liv- Funny character and nice, subtle colouring. The wings are awesome!

lakeland- Nice concept. I do feel the girl looks a bit too 'normal' for a fairy. The green, swirly cloth nearly upstages her.

Hungryan- I love the style: Very original and different. Looks scandinavian to me for some reason... The leafy wings rock! I don't quite identify her as THE Absinthe fairy despite the leaves. I would think of her as a dryad or woodland spirit...

David Mcleod- That's hilarious! I love how he has this "Hi. Why Yes, I'm alone and quite bashful..." girly attitude! ROFL

Matt Dixon- Awesome cameo! And I love the simple composition. Her face is less cute and cartoony than her body and she looks old... but I gather it could be the years of alcohol abuse ;)

Arthemis IX- Lovely, simple composition. The bottle looks amazing (and very sharp!)!

Amber Alexander- Great colour scheme and the composition is nice. The face is a bit generic: I feel more expression would draw us in, like a wider smile, laughter or a wink; to break the symmetry of it. Awesome job on the gossamer wings!

Blau- Nice design and I love the dress!

PuppyKitten- What can I say? It's gorgeous! Reminds me a bit of Audrey Kawasaki. I don't see it as green though (maybe it's my screen? :-/) so I admit, I picture her as some water fairy... But, dang it's beautiful! The skin... :D

Wow; gotta get some work done now! I'll do my best to give more crits later...

Slash: I love the wings and wish they were a little more rendered. I also know how time consuming that would be. :/ I could see a little more splashing going on around the head and chest, but I'm picking nits at this point. Nice work.

davidmcleod: Like everyone else I love the concept. I think dialing the beard back was a good move. Kinda wish you'd done a wee bit more finishing around the legs and feet. That fairy's not a pole dancer, is he? ;)

MichaelNoel: Nice work overall. I think it plays close with the 3/4 rule, but it's nice sometimes to get to do more work on a characters face. The freckles are cool. The floating glasses are kind of odd.

Chronoperates: One of my favorites, mainly for her attitude. It's both the expression and the posture working together. The idea for the wings is cool of course. I don't see the lower left part of the glass as being sugar - just grey. vote

Tommoy: Lot's of fun reading the graffiti on the tree. It's great how the wings wrap around the tree. I don't think her lower abdomen reads quite right - maybe the defined edge between her right hip and abdomen is to blame - not sure. I like the expression and the posture here, too.

Lakeland: The thing I immediately notice is the good volume and definition of the arm right next to the flat rendering of the face. The body kind of loses form as it goes down - I don't see how the feet connect to the rest of the figure. I think you did a good job of making her seem like she's inside the bottle. If the green fabric/swirl thing extended below the label it might help that even more.

Matt Dixon: Very fun. :) Maybe look at how the slipper is hanging off the foot. vote

IIKII: The cup on the foot is neat! Good work on the fabric wrinkle patterns. Her left arm doesn't read well for me - the upper arm is too long and I don't see how the forearm bends from it. Despite the dynamic pose, she still seems stiff. Figure drawing practice will help, of course, and that book Force: Dynamic Figure Drawing for Animators.

NicHolS: Nice presentation and use of background color. ;) I like the lighting and iridescence of the main figure, too. Something about her expression bothers me but I'm not sure what. Maybe the jawbone is unusually wide?

Time to go home. Don't know if I'll get to everyone this time. Definitely want to call out Mercuralis and Max Martelli, though. Great work.

Trying to limit my votes, i went for Tommoy and Matt Dixon.

Tommoy : My fav! So adorable, i am charmed by the character, she looks light and mischievous, it makes me think to party and joy, which is the positive side of the beverage! ;) I also love some details, like you didnt use the obvious dark and saturate green many used (even if this green is ok too), but that yellow green very fresh. Charming really, and the inscriptions on the tree are such a cool detail. :)
Vote vote vote, love it.

Matt Dixon : Well, as you said, i'd maybe liked to see an original design from you, but the take on Tinkerbell as an old drinker is hilarious! :D And it's so pretty! I couldn't help myself to imagine the whole Peter PAn gang at the AA or something, painted with your soft style! Heheh playful and so well done!
By the way, Clochette is the french name of Tinkerbell! :D I hope i won't look like yours in few years!

I also liked Johan de Venecia's but i must admit i was prefering the sketch though. The colors seems a bit too dark to me, or maybe it just lacks of a contrast somewhere?

Sorry, i wish i could crit you all but i can't right now!
And thanks a lot for the votes and feed back! :)

I don't have time to comment on every piece this time 'round, but I have an overall observation that some folks might wanna think about: reference. A lot of these pieces looked too much like straight bikini models/pin-ups. The secret to using reference is to make it your own, and stay true to the vibe of the project. Good round, all! Green is my FAVORITE color. I was in visual nirvana...

Great lot of art-style variety in this one!

Though as a girl who takes her drink well and loves the taste of absinth, I'm surprised that more of you didn't do the Green Fairy seducing girls or couples.

Or maybe a set of little Green Fairies? I always thought of them as the party fae, ha...

Great set of entries though!

I voted for Clochette and Johann de Venecia, I liked how they both portrayed the figure in a soft seductive manner that aludes to it's heyday while still giving it a timeless quality. They also both managed to make you think of the drink more than just the nude figure.
In Johann de Venecia's the colors and textures really gave me a sense of connection with the herbs/origin of the drink while Clochette's gave a lovely sense of the end product's glow and the pure liquid pouring out of her feels so natural.
Both compositions feel very Art Nouveau and while Clochette pulled it off more successfully in my opinion with the level of finish - very "Mucha" ^^, Johann de Venecia did a lovely job at that as well, I think you could have adjusted the man's figure a bit more though, it's a little awkward and it distracted from the fairy a bit too much.

Great job everyone!
