did about 25 gestures and got too frustrated to continue, so this was my break and so far I am satisfied with the result although I find when I use the Loomis Method of construction for the head I ALWAYS have to add on more to the cranium to avoid a chopped off skull effect (note the change between 3 and 4).
On a side note, I am really begining to enoy digital painting.

Thanks! I've been adjusting that image as the lighting seemed wrong (the light on the dark side of the face is equally as bright as the light on the light side) so I tweaked it when I got home from school today:

Thanks for the still life suggestion, I plan on trying one out in the next few days. I've got to slow down a very tiny bit so I can finish out the year strong. Just 2 more days then I am practically home free.
I just ordered 4 Bridgeman books from Barnes and Nobel so I plan on studying up as soon as possible. ahhH! Can't wait.
Expect a lot of work unfolding in the next few weeks school will be out and work will not have started.

This is only about half of what I did today. I also spent a good deal of time in english rotating a skull around on the back of a grad invite envelope and I'll post that up tomarrow.
I am going to have a nice break this weekend and paint it up so expect some more art. Probably some still set ups and then some fun things. Should be a good time.

My goal for today was to do 60 gestures (check) and then three portrait studies each lasting 30 minates. Ahaha. My first 30 minate one was quite terrible and I just couldn't stand it after 20 minates so I scrapped it and started on this which I ended up spending a good hour and 30 minates on.
Any flaws you noticed please point them out. The mouth seems a bit off to me and I may come back to it (this is done from a photo referance).

Studies from Andrew Loomis: Drawing the Head and Hands:
My original intent was to draw 100 heads. Wehn I first attempted the planes as described in the book I thought that after some practice they would come about more easily but when near 60 (after 20 attempts at planes) they still seemed incredably off I decided to scan them and see if anyone had suggestions.

I've been at work all this time where I've got no internet. Been working as a pastel portrait artist, actually. It's been good but somewhat mechanical. I do not remember who I draw once I finish. I am mad to draw so that's all in the afterwork and I stay up too late and fall asleep on busses.

I am home again for a very brief period of time. I've been drawing a lot while sitting inside my closet late at night. Or on the bus. It's the first time I've ever really kept a sketchbook and I can't believe I haven't done it before. I love how the pages work together. One page is nice but all together in a book it is an even different thing. It's a story of that period in time and I can remember just what I was doing when I look back at the old pages. I am going to have a lot of these I know.

Great start, your on the right path just keep drawing. I really like the life in your sketches, your quicker sketches seem to have a vibrance that makes them feel alive.
On a side note, I too am starting at MICA in the fall although I'm transferring as a junior. Hope to see you there.

One thing that bothers me is the amount of crinkling on basically every page. I guess that by working with watercolors it can't really be helped. So whatever :P

It was annoying me too. I was working in one of those skinny mole skins but I switched to a book with thicker pages (check out the recent entries). But thank you.

My drawing class is on fridays. I had initally done a self portrait on Wednesday and was ehh, pretty dissatisfied with the drawing. It was one of those, "I know it's good enough to turn in but definatly not my best/etc" sort of images. So at 12am the evening before I started a this one. Finished at 3am. And I am glad I did.

This is a great attitude to have. And it's awesome how you're devoting a lot of your work to building that traditional background. I should be doing the same!

Thanks! I am trying to work in more figure study and Sargent portrait studies. Fun stuff.

Throwing down some goals:
-Carrying the sketchbook more often. It needs to happen. I went to the aquarium last night (excellent by the way) and brought my sketchbook but didn't draw anything. That seems to happen too often. I should draw more at meals. Tons of people around. Easy targets.
-More real life figure drawing! Like people in action! Doing whatever they do. I actually love doing that, it's just hard for me to get it started...I was thinking, "it's hard for me to find a good place to do it" but I find once I sit down ANYWHERE I always find people to draw that I didn't see before. So sure. That works.
-Fuck the fact that it's hard!
-Setting aside time during the week for studies. Particularly portrait, figure, and drapery studies. I haven't figured out exactly when yet with all the work I am balancing. But I WILL! I WILL I WILL.

I need to get better.
So after completing a good bit of my school work for tomorrow I took some time to set up a small still life and practice. Spent a little over an hour on it. I downloaded CS4 for a 30 day trial. Expect a lot of digital in the next 30 days! POW! I am punching this stuff out.
Need more figure practice. Going to do Critical Inquiry homework then some more digital painting. Crit is so much appreciated. Thanks!

Some sketches from this week. I paint over the pages I dislike and draw new things. So hence the green. I've got a lot of homework to do and it's entirely freaking me out...I am just going to sit down and get it down. POW.
But here's this for now. I've been going to open life drawing at school on Saturdays. Been a help so far. Relaxing too. Lovely.
Ah, also I've been noticing...I understand (or think I understand) Bridgeman (I have some posted earlier in the thread) when I am doing studies from his books but then I am having a horrible time trying to actually apply that when I draw from life. I can't bridge the gap? It's hard for me to invision the boxes on actual people (or even sometimes in his drawings when the boxes are not indicated). I have problems especially with the top of the box for the pelvis and rib cage. I can't figure out what angle is goes at...do the hips naturally slant slightly downwards? So should that plane slant slightly down? Does that mean the bottom needs to be parallel? What about the ribs? It seems like that it slants down too, and that's how the head is able to connect to it? Or I am I getting mixed up? I am going to string together some blocks with wire latter and mess around to see if I can' understand it better, but I thought someone here might have words of wisdom to offer. So much thanks.

Just a wip for my illustration class. Illustrating the poem annabel lee, this is where she gets sucked up by the wind! Well, the wind chills and kills her (something to that extent) so I personified it as hands. I just really wanted to get the color right. I messed around with a lot of different things before I got this and right now I think I am pretty satisfied with the combination.
I am having trouble deciding if what color I want the hair to be as well as how much I want to distinguish her face from the dress. Unsure about the background. It looks a bit like she doesn't have a body :P I am going to fix that.
and some exciting news: Fall break starts this friday. I've off Saturday-Wednesday and I am using that time to catch up in all my classes. aka: GET AHEAD. Which is going to leave me more time for studies. I made up a really great schedule and I am really excited about it. Can't wait.

just a quick speed paint :P About an hour. I don't know. Mehhhh. I just finished a 'pop art' assignment for one of my classes that I absolutely hate. I should have just left it alone but I was convinced I needed to make it more 'pop' so I repainted it and junk and now not only did that take 4 more hours, it looks 10 times worse. Damnit.
So I am kind of screaming inside. I've been trying to just use my assignments to forward the things I want to learn/do with my art and be satisfied with a few mediocre ones now and again but still annoying to have to hang them up :P
Anyway--what'd you think?

Updated Annabel Lee WIP. Mmmm. I tired to oval because I felt like there wasn't enough of a focus on her face, what'd you think? Too messy looking?
I don't know if anyone will be able to help me with this, but I am gunna try my best to describe it. 'Ight, so I wanna kinda smooth out the image, right? Yeah? But when I try to get ride of some of the really hard edges I have I end up just smoothing it into an absolutely boring flatness. Know what I am talking about? I feel like my brushstrokes left they way they are are messy. But smoothing them ruins the image. I've seen people do some really awesome things with visible brushstrokes, but I dunno if it really does anything for my piece--thoughts?

I am trying to get in all my work from the past few weeks scanned in. Finally got my scanner here at school, but for right now, here's some photographs of some work from my drawing class. We had a model come in and do some karate sort of poses, fun stuff. These first images are short poses, all under 5 minutes.
That first image each pose was 2 minutes. The fourth image you can tell was at the start, the gesture is really stiff and boring. :P

Here are some images done towards the end of class as I figured out how to do a better simplified drawing of the model with the 10 minutes we had. I was using a method that our instructor suggested: Do a gesture of the model (in many cases I did multipul gestures, either on top of each other or wiping them down inbetween) and then a contour drawing on top. By wiping down the drawing so many times I was able to get a nice grey tone to the paper and worked back into the images with an eraser.
The first image is a 10 minute pose and the last two are 20 minutes.

Alright! So today I stumbled upon the Peer Project thread in fine arts and decided to give it a go.

Highly recomended, useful stuff. This first project was about the difference between value, hue, and intensity. Painted the two spheres seperatly, trying to obtain a similar range in values on the greyscale sphere and the color sphere. Converted to black and white to check the progress. Pretty good! Do you think they need strong shadows on the far left sides? I can't seem to decide :\
And then just throwing up a few of my figure drawings. 10 minutes each. Soon I am going to go to the lab and scan in all my figure drawing work I have in my sketchbook to post up.
I just realized that the way I shade the figure is flattening out the form. I need to work more with shading along the figure, like a cross contour but much more quick 'n messy.

Today I took some time to read about color and light and I found it really informative (although I am sure I've still got much more to learn). I set a green apple I'd gotten from the cafeteria on some bright pink post it notes so I could illustrate the cool pink reflections and the hue change on the apple where my yellow desk lamp hits it.
Also! In going with my last post about learning about value I've realized that's the problem a lot of my paintings have been having lately! (such as the one just above this with the girl and the hands) I knew something was not quite right about it and couldn't figure it out but tha's it! The values are all incredibly similar and it just flattens out. ahhHH! I am so excited about this.

Keep cracking away at it, its clear you have a good understanding of what you need to study and that's half the battle.

Definitely making progress. I enjoy looking at your stuff so much. As for the apple, i think simple is better. I would check the saturation and value of both your highlighted areas, it seems like the left highlight is to saturated ,and the right highlight's value is to low.

lolbbq--thanks for teh suggestion and paint over. I am going to mess around with it. Good suggestions! The yellow did look out of place but I could not figure out why.
from today. Just a 20 minute study of a flash drive. mehhhh. Not digging it. It's a grey flashdrive but I keep hearing instructors going off on not using grey. So I didn't. I think it should have been more slightly pink grey, or slightly blue grey rather then "that is SO pink"

i think the reason it's suggested to use a tinted neutral color is because it makes it easier for our eyes to differentiate value and color relationships.

lolbbu-- Thanks for taking the time to look at my work; it's truly appreciated. So I reworked the apple drawing and upon looking at it again realized that the second highlight? Didn't really exist. I was fooled into thinking it was a highlight and made it very bright because it was much brighter then the dark shadow next to it, but still not nearly as bright as that front highlight. Which makes sense--the lightest light on the dark side shouldn't be as bright as any of the highlights on the light side? As a general rule, perhaps? I think I may rework the flash drive, or attempt another grey piece and see how that turns out, do you feel that the pink is too saturated? To me it seems in some awkward middle zone that needs to be pushed all the way to either very pinky sort of grey or to very very pale pink that is nearly grey.
Ivan Turcin-- Thanks! I haven't touched watercolor since the summer. To me my watercolors feel very childish. Over the past view months I've been trying to 'mature' my color pallet and to focus more on genuine drawing that's more about really seeing and really observing an object in space. The drawings I made over the summer were sort of this awkward inbetween where I wanted to do that but because too caught up in the aesthetics? But hey! Maybe I'll try out some water colors this week if I get the time! Could be fun with some bad ass layering. Thanks for checking out my work and for the tutorial, I'll be sure to check it out.
First drawing is the reworked apple image. Second is the same apple, again, different light source. And third is an assignment for my Drawing class. We're to do a sustained (15 hour) drawing of a piece of drapery. Our school has really really wonderful statutes with great strong lighting and of course, immobile drapery! I started out just sort of rushing into it to get the very general proportions right and then slowly refined it, carefully comparing distances and relatives sizes, etc. It became very relaxing. I am not use to working much with graphite, because it's so tedious, but I thought that would be fitting for this particular assignment, and I am enjoying it thus far. I couldn't seem to quite get the head of the baby on the left right, but I am not too worried about it, this is only the first 2-3 hours of work. I plan on going back tomorrow morning, and I'll snap a picture of the statue for you guys so you can what I have to look at.

went back for another 3 hours this morning. Did a lot of erasing and redrawing. I realized that the arm placement was wrong and it was effecting the shape of the head on the left. So I replaced it, and still, I think it's off. I also forgot my camera, so no picture of the statue yet. I believe the problem is the angle that I am placing his features on, it should be steeper, I am making it much too horizontal. See how the first one it is VERY horizontal and very wrong looking, and the second one it is less horizontal and more correct? I think that's the problem.
I usually don't do such tedious things. Although I think forcing myself to do one every so often is certainty not a bad thing. And I am quite sure once I get everything laid out how I want it laying down the values will be quite relaxing. Taking a break from it though until Sunday, giving it a bit of time to objectify.
EDIT: Went back and took the picture. :D Looking at it now the head on the left is not as horrible as I had thought but something still seems off about it me, if anyone cares to look further into that, I would be very apprechiative.

So I am finally going to start uploading things from my sketchbook more regularly instead of just my class assignments and digital paintings.
So here's some older stuff mixed in with some new, but all from the last month at the very oldest. Mostly the last 2 weeks.
Life drawing from the past three weeks. All under 10 minutes. Most recent at the bottom. Ahah--he was so angular and fun to draw, plus some of his poses were ridiculous (charlie's angel's pose?). Good stuff.

Just some updates on that 15 hour drawing :P
First image is about another 3 hours or so. And the second same, about another 3. For some reason once I hit around three I get frustrated and need to break from the piece. I get to this point where my work just isn't productive anymore and I spend more time staring at the drawing then actually working.
I changed my mind about the graphite because I really wanted to be able to more freely experiment with value and I felt the tedious nature of the graphite was prohibiting that. So I just used a razor to scrape some charcoal powder onto it, grayed it up, and then worked around with an eraser and whatnot. I am liking the looser sort of strokes I used to define the dark and light shapes. I like the value contrasts it has, for the most part, but I feel like my edges are messy and that I lost a lot of the lovely detail I had in the face. So my plan is to spray it with some workable fixative and then go back into with either some graphite again or some colored pencil to detail the face and add some sharpness.
And, a tangent but! I've noticed that CA doesn't have acrylics as a possibility for media? eh?

I ended up scrapping most of the ideas I had before and slapping a gradient across the background with some sidewalk texture and red people! I like having the figures red--I am excited to experiment with that over break. ahhhhhHH--I can't wait for break. 4 more days. This is a marathon.
Which will continue over break for sure. I have a nice plan set up--going though two bridgeman books and god knows what else.

The newest oil painting is coming along very nicely. Even looking through just this one page, there is a huge amount of progress. Good luck with the wisdom teeth thing! I had mine out nearly 3 years ago and the memory of eating liquid food for a week still make me appreciate being able to eat normally.

It's acrylic! I haven't painted with oils since the 10th grade. Too expensive! Ahaha, but I'll be forced into buying some for my painting I class next semester. No idea how they handle :P Hopefully similar. I can't remember.

So I got my wisdom teeth cut out yesterday! And it really was not so horrible, the first 5 hours or so after were pretty lame and I sat around with an icepack on my face and not being able to feel my tongue or face, but hey, it turned around fast. That 6th hour I was painting. So here it is, I think I'll start on the next bridgman book tonight:
This is as far as I am taking this one. I like the combination of warm and cool colors and the general spashyness about it. I may start another tomorrow or so.

That painting of my brother that I started on. I was going to render them together but now I think I should get rid of the left one that's facing forward?
I think they take away form each other. I might just make a monster or something behind his head. Whatever works for the painting. I guess I'll see how I feel in the morning when I look at it again.
I think for it to work with two the shadow on the left would need to be on the opposite side? Something about it isn't working for me.

Final version--bahhh, I think I like the progress shot more. I don't know. This seems too warm? There is something about the progress shot that I feel works much better and I can not pin point it. Any crits are highly appreciated, I am so new to painting.

Ahaha, I had originally done something similar to this but got told that it was too confusing and ambiguous so I made sure to define everything very clearly and got told that I should have made it more ambiguous. Of course. I don't have easy access to a scanner anymore, so updates will be less frequent but much more quantity. Anyway:

I've yet to get any homework this semester (oddest thing) so, naturally, I've assigned myself some :P
Another painting of my brother. Ahaha, he's the only sibling I've got that will sit for drawings or photographs. I've got to sleep, the eye was looking bad, so he's temporarily been made a pirate.
I am rather proud of this piece! The colors seemed to work out, but again, any crits would be great.

First real painting class today. PAINTING I! WooO! ahaha, no no, I actually really like it. Just just worked in black and white acrylics on 140lbs paper. White objects on white backgrounds. About 1 1/2 hours.
This is a cup! The ellipse, is bad, really no good. Ellipses are so tricky to draw, if anyone had advise for drawing ellipses properly, I would much appreciate it. I think that the outside of the cup works, but the values inside are off (maybe the whole ellipse is just throwing me off all together, I dunno). Anyway, I cropped it so you can just see the bottom so you can check that out.
I've got to do another for homework, but if I have time I'll probably do 2 or 3 more, they're really fun, fitting all the shapes together.

More updates form painting class:
The first is the study I was required to do for homework. Black and white of an object on a table top, then greyscale of the same object. I don't like how it turned out, the lighting is confusing and those ellpises are horrible. But I put a good deal of work into trying to figure it out,and I feel towards the end anyway that I really started to understand the object, even though that may not be entirely clear :P
The second is a setup from class. Even though it's obvious it could go much further, I am really satisfied with it. I am especially satisfied with the way I was able to capture the difference in value between the objects. I think that's really clear and working. I could have pulled more lights out of it (especially the lightbulb on the left and that plastic water bottle). I need to get a smaller brush :P The small brush I have is all beat up and cheap.
It's all acrylics still. I am buying oils latter in the week :)

Here is my painting homework from this week: Paint 3 objects in black and white acrylics that can sit on a table top. Use a definate light source.
I spent about 5 hours on it. I get very fiddly and constantly rework the same areas. I need to move around more and spend less time fiddling, more time painting. I do better when I stop looking to see if it looks like what it should. Focus on the shapes.
I think the clock turned out well, the reflection is what pulls the piece together for me. The light bulb is weak (too dark) and the scissors could maybe use some more definition. I am satisfied with the ink bottle and the clock.
I am probably going to end up doing a painting a day for the rest of the semester. I've even worked it out to be a class assignment. :D
2-3 hours each. Small (no larger then 14 inches either way) and in traditional media.

Update: I got it approved for our semester long project. Wooo. The rules: one painting every day for the rest of the semester (until April 21st), 70 paintings in total. Traditional media. Must be observational. 2-3 hours each. I am starting out black and white with simple compositions on my desktop, and will be moving onto color/larger more complex objects, and eventually interiors/landscapes/the figure. Enjoy :)

Day number 4! I like this one! Compositionally I guess it's a bit lame, but I got into it more then yesterdays or Wednesdays. I am figuring out the oils a bit better, got some bright whites in there.
Plus, my lightbulb rendering skills are improving. Mmm, except under the lightbulb, the light was creeping just under the curve, but I just managed to make it look confusing. Ah well. Tomorrow!

The values in last one are wonderful. It's got a lot of atmosphere. Be careful with perspective, though, as it looks a bit off.

Thanks! Are you referring to the empty tape dispenser and the way that the roll doesn't come exactly center? I guess the marker is sort of floating a bit as well. It should be angled more down, towards the left.

There's something very enjoyable about these b&w paintings. :D However, I agree that watching that you get the perspective right is a thing to look out for. It's really hard to tell what exactly is "wrong" when you don't know what it actually looks like. I would also suggest doing some sketches from life of varying lengths. Maybe between 1 min to 15 min? Most of what I can see here looks like you are focusing more on your angles in order to get a quick image, than getting the form and shapes down more smoothly.
Either way, you have some very nice work. I like the experimentation going on as well. :sungod:

What i think your doing better and should keep pushing is what marks your making. Ive found paintings is about lighting and form. So always be looking at something form in terms of big blocks of light, and use brush strokes that replicate that. Look at defining shapes clearly, so brush marks follow the surface and stuff.
Good stuff :) Keep it up!

Figures from the model we had in drawing this friday. Unsure of how successful the color is OR where I am failing in anatomy. They're in chronological order. I am unsure how what direction to push my figures, I always hear that they are really simplified and essential. Very angular and squared.

It was for class, and he just dumped a whole ton of figurative paintings on a CD for us to choose from without titles or names. Anddd I forgot to ask in class, 'cause we didn't end up talking on them in order to spend the most amount of time possible working form the model.

new model, almost identical pose. Slightly longer then two hours; by magic I managed to get all of the initial proportions correct (I think). I spent much time with the others fiddling with the proportions. Wiping down and restarting.
My professor was coming around and just told me to stop (there were about 20 minutes left in the pose). I think he was afraid I'd wipe it down again. Ahaha.

I am not dead. These are from my digital painting class. It's a good time. I have a separate folder on my laptop for each of the days of class, so a lot of the files are named similar things, but saved in different folders which makes uploading all the gestures together a real bitch.
