View Full Version : Pixelherders Steaming Sketch Dump *update 17th NOV - lifedrawing* *nudism alert!*

December 23rd, 2003, 03:34 PM
*EDIT 5th MAY 2004*
Just thought that a brief explanation of what this thread was about might be in order...
after several years in the games industry i found my "traditional" drawing skills werent what they used to be. So inspired by the bucketfuls of raw-steaming talent littered around here i decided to try and relearn a lot of what i'd forgotten and even pick up some new tricks > like digitial painting.
To date i've mainly been copying photos from the net, not for any rabid fanboy motivations, but just to learn the basics of colour, value and to get over the mind-numbing fear of a blank page/or screen by just scribbling as fast as i can and worrying about the consequences later. And thats what i'll keep doing until i think i've got a handle on the basics. Then it'll be onto phase 2...whatever that turns out to be.
Having done this for a few months i'm half-tempted to delete the early stuff, but much as it pains me for it to be seen in public, its a good example of the progress (i *think*) i've made since i began.
That is all!
*EDIT*
sketches! all over the place!

Well i might have been - between the move and the new job i've been a bit quiet of late
And although painter is tempting, i think its probably best to stick to something i know while i'm still a beginner. When i get cocky and overconfident THEN i'll try the big boys software...
Cheers!

i know what you mean about style and variation, but i think they will come with ( a lot ) more experience
At the moment i'm just trying to build confidence and fluidity. These studies really really HURT! Most of them i',ve almost given up on thinking there was no way to rescue them from my noobness. I need to get to the stage where i dont even need to think about what i'm doing. And that could take YEARS!
Like playing an instrument, you cant improvise till the chords and technique are instinctive.
i'm not quite there yet :)
Thanks for your comment!

I know exactly what you mean PH. I'm new to digital painting and finding it REALLY hard work to get to a standard that I'm even half satisfied with.
You shouldn't worry though, you've obviously got loads of talent, you'll probably get where you want sooner than you think. :)

I think the earlier ones were around the 40 minute mark, but lately i seem to be taking about an hour. I should really try to speed that up a little, but the more i think i know about what i should be doing the more it seems to interfere with thoughtless scribbling.

I was going to say these were really good, but I just read that theyre speed painting so theyre absolutely great! Do you post on the sijun forums by any chance? Theyre in their 4th speedpainting thread right now.. they only start a new one once 1300 pages (I think its the max for the forum) are filled per thread.. Some really good stuff there if you haven't seen it:

45 minutes for this slightly rubbish effort - lousy wheels and their diffucult to draw accurately circular forms!

This is totally awesome dude, great work. Is that a lens flare I see there on that knife? If so it is very subtle and appropriate.

no! its not a lens flare - i promise! Just a quick splat of an airbrush to suggest a glint of light, but i left the "Way of the Lens Flare Filter" behind a long time ago...and i'm not going back!

I've not been whacking my wacom as frequently of late, but i have something to show at last. Having enrolled at a lifedrawing course 4/5 weeks ago, this is my progress so far.
Bearing in mind i havent touched a pencil, or drawn from life in a couple of years, then theyre a bit rough around the edges (i.e. i know theres issues with everything from line weight to anatomy!) but even in that short time, i feel i've made *some* progress
So in roughly chronological order (from my first class to my most recent) then here they are... (mostly in the range of 5-40 minutes)

wow nice work pixel! all really consistent and solid, it's really cool how you combine natural forms with geometric shapes and marks. Makes for a great graphic effect.

Great studies. I enjoy watching you get better and better. Thanks for posting. Its always good to see how someone else approaches the problems we all have. Entertaining in the short run, inspiring in the long: all attributes of a damn fine sketchthread.

so its been a while. But i'm happy to say its been a (mostly) productive absense.
Coming up on the end of a 20 week lifedrawing course...and i've signed up for a 10 week figurative sculpture class next month. So a lot of my work has been taking place in "the real world" not leaving much time for digital.
But i plan to start more frequent updates, so heres a study from over on the drah'n time 13 thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=38351)
