Okay, so. I've been pining for a 21UX for some time now a both an illustrator, sculptor and wannabe renderer. What I wanna know is...for a comic/concept artist is it worth pining over and saving up?

Also, if anyone here knows various ways to make up the whopping $2,000 price tag through sculpting, commissions and whatnot by all means...let me know.

I feel like I could do so much more with a Cintiq than my poor, dying Intuos3.

They are definitely beautiful pieces of machinery. I just switched from an Intuos2 to a Cintiq 12WX and even at the small size I'm adoring it. If you do your art primarily digitally, it's the most important tool you can have.
Many people claim they work twice as fast on a Cintiq as on a regular tablet, and that alone may well justify the price.
Keep in mind, if the 2 grand is way too much for your to shell out, the smaller Cintiq can get pretty close if you give it some customization lovin'. I do a dual monitor setup so I can check up on my fullsize image while working on the smaller screen. The downfall is that it's harder to work with big, loose, sweeping strokes on the smaller version. But if you work traditionally and scan to colour it doesn't matter. There's a lot of personal variables that you'll need to take into account, at any rate.

Anyway, not trying to turn this into a 12WX vs 21UX debate, but since you seem to be considering the financial sacrifice, I figured I'd throw out that option for you to consider.

In a nutshell, it's worth it. Goodluck making your decision!

Is the intuos 3 really dying or is your Cintiq lust killing it?

;-)

Whether or not the cintiq will benefit you really depends on your working style. I bought a 20 WSX about 6 months ago and am strongly considering selling it.

It truly is a wonderful piece of equipment and does everything it is supposed to do, but I've found it to be a bit overkill for me. That, in and of itself, would not push me to sell my beloved Cintiq, but the main thing for me is that I am reaching the point where I need to upgrade my Powermac G5 to a Mac Pro and I don't have the resources (money) to do it.

If I sell the Cintiq I'm 90% home - and I'd be more than happy to "down grade" to an intuos if it means a new tower. I've happily worked on Intuos tablets for years, and still use one at the day job, so I will be fine there.

So, while it is a wonderful tool I would suggest really evaluating your working style before you jump. Some people really benefit from a tool such as this, I'm not one of those people (at this point at least), I just succumbed to Cintiq lust.

best of luck.
