textures painting

I was wondering how to add or paint with textures like you see in speed paints, and finished stuff. I might not be explaining it right. The style to use these textures as I have seen.

They have one flaw they make the whole painting look very hard ,but at the same time they give the feel like its been painted with real paint. I hope someone will understand what I am talking about and can give or make a tutorial on it here thanks.

a lot of the texturing i do is with pictures. if i want something to look dirty or rusty, i get a picture of rust and the lay it on top of what i want textured. from there play with opacity and blending modes. mostly multiply, overlay, and screen

Thanks I have to try it sometime. I still kida wish there some step by step tutorial on how to do it.
