View Full Version : Mucha sketches? Please?

So I was looking for sketches by Alfons Mucha because his lines are soooo good but couldn't find too many on the net, even though there must be loads of them. Probably because his work isn't public domain yet. Buuuuut I'm sure some peeps here have huge folders filled with his drawings and I'd like to ask if anyone is willing to share? I'd really very much appreciate that.
Thanks! :)

I don't know how readily available the Dover books are for you but I do have this book: http://www.amazon.com/Drawings-Mucha-Works-Alphonse-Including/dp/0486236722/ it has a lot of sketches in it before they became full rendered editions.

Ive got like three mucha books and the one Arshes suggested is great because its pretty much his sketches and studies before his finished illos. Is it legal for me to scan them and put them in a pdf download? if so, I can do that.
But if anyone has his slav epic, I would love those!!!!!!!

I wish there was a book with huge full colour pictures of the Slav Epic, I've been looking forever. :(
I have Mucha's Figures Decoratives, I think it's a great book. It's purely sketches. If you're still looking I can scan some of them later.

there's this brand new catalog of the mucha exhibition that's in vienna at the moment:
http://www.amazon.de/Alfons-Mucha-Ausstellung-2-02-2009-01-06-2009-25-09-2009-10-01-2010/dp/377747035X/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1242160325&sr=8-4
i got it a couple of days ago. it's pricy, but i love it. it has lots of his prelims and sketches too. for me definetly worth the money.
the exhibtion is moving to munich in september this year. if you love mucha you don't wanna miss it. i sure won't!
the dover book is a must have!

These are some of his paintings from his Slav Epic. Incredible work! They are currently being displayed in the small town of Moravsky Krumlov, in the Czech Republic. I think they are being moved to Prague soon, but it was quite nice to travel to the small town in the countryside to see these. I'm glad we traveled there before they had been moved.

This thread is turnin' epic! After visiting the Mucha Museum in Prague and the Slavonic Epopej in Moravsky Krumlov, I was surprised. Seeing his work in real life, just made him an even bigger badass in my book than he already was! He has a lot of works he did later in his career after he left Paris and went back to Prague that aren't as well-known but are among his best (I'm referring to the posters he made in Prague-some are already posted in this thread.) Also, the mansion that currently houses the Slav Epic in Moravsky Krumlov has a lot of character and didn't have that many visitors when Oracrest and myself attended it. The town is pretty isolated- about 2 hrs out of Brno- which is a good thing because it let me stand infront of all the paintings by myself and take them in without distraction. One of the best museum experiences I've had- because you realize not only are the paintings epic but so was Mucha's career. Very inspiring. Once they go to Prague you won't be able to experience them like that, I reckon.

I would be very interested in knowing how he turned those sketches into those.. errr...supernatural posters. Without the "Undo" button.

I would be very interested in knowing how he turned those sketches into those.. errr...supernatural posters. Without the "Undo" button.
he would do about 10 full size sketches of the idea that all looked the same, just with tiny changes before taking it to print, his process was very time consuming, but i guess that's the only way he could get them to look so perfect without the undo button like you said :)
I visited the various mucha museums in prague, but i definitely still want to see the slav epic. for anyone who doesn't know, those paintings are about 20ft high in real life and he made about 40 of them AFTER he'd turned 70-75 he was still churning out amazing art past 80.

Sorry if this has been answered but those with the Drawings of Mucha: 70 Works and Figures Decoratives, can you clarify if there are any images printed twice in both books? Basically, if you can only get one which one would you get? I'll probably end up getting both.

I would definitely get Figures Decoratives. It's the definitive book for his sketches (well they're plates). And I see sketches in there that no one ever reproduces in his other books.
