Round #143
Topic:
Arctic Juggernaut of Death
Creature Description: Arctic Juggernaut of Death-- My studio is up in the attic of my house and I am starting to think about installing the air conditioner once again for the summer months. As such, I thought I would cool things down in COW as well by running with a nice, big, freezing monstrosity that kills, kills, kills! It's a relatively open ended topic this week. Just make it huge, at home in the arctic wasteland, and a savage killer of all it encounters. Got it?
Deadline:
Sunday, 17 May 2009
note: The deadline won't be EXACTLY after a week...it can last up to 24 hours more, i am human and have to work also, you know ;)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
How to post
In this thread you can post all wips, questions, comments etc
However if you are done with your entry, post the final image in the following thread.

Yes, as long as it fits the brief, aliens monsters demons or whatever are acceptable.

well after a short phase of finding some designs i came up with this creature which im still not sure if ill keep the scene or replace it with something else...in the meantime having alittle fun with that small emo square therewhich is about " what would a person who live there will probebly look like if a giant monster would appear out of nowhere and is about to destroy his village O_O"
it wont be in the final image but its just for now to like enter the mood and to have alittle fun lool :D

No, not yet, but I will soon. I was actually working on a large snow critter for a client last week, which along with the warm weather was my inspiration.
Big snow monsters are popular!
I am looking forward to seeing it though... mebbe tomorrow. Even the naysayers are coming around to say how much they liked it. A lot of people are saying things like "This is how the Star Wars prequels should have been." Sounds like a winner...

This is my first COW.
Please forgive my errors in gramatic or forum rules.
I'm thinking of making of fatty, dumb ice giant/troll creature,
therefore the anatomy is fairly humanoid, is it allowed ?
I made a initial sketch
Please give thy opinion.

Entering again, we'll see if I finish this time.
So, I like the idea of this a lot more than I like my first pass on it. Basically it's a living iceberg that preys upon cargo ships as they navigate the arctic seas.
I feel like this is way less dramatic than it could be, that and as the creature looks now, it's not really an anatomy study, just an exercise in rendering snow & ice.
Would love any thoughts on how I could plus this one.
Cheers

Gawd, I cant' make up my mind .... should I go with a large snow creature or a giant wave of mountain, snow and ice!? Juggernaut is defined as a massive relentless force or object that crushes everything in its path. I've been working on a kinda creature but I'm just not sure it fits into the realm of juggernaut. Maybe I will just sleep on it hahaha :)

rigthy then time for an initial crit spamm thing, while the ideas are fresh, im a noob so i may be WAaaaaaY off on these :D
sketchius-
my only thoughts is thaat with only two leggs on the ground your creature would be very unbalanced, but love the idea of an ice giant :D
Razorleaf-
looks a little cuddely at the moment, make him mean and feice "GRRRR", and something to show the scale would be nice, great work :)

im going to see that thing in my nightmares!!! :O

That thing is HUGE! would be cool to see where the tenticals join the body :)

Ah Chu-
Damn that is cool great sence of scale, and action
memper-
awesome facial render, very creepy, looks a little like one of the ice creatures from the new star treck film ;)
Wixxi-
lol love the face, my only thought is that the creature looks off balance, maybe some bigger arms to help it support its weight
evil comrad-
looks pretty cool, not really getting the jugganought of death "feeling" seeems a little to cute :)

ok so heres an update beleive it or not ive been using photoshop for painting for 3 years and ive only just found how to use a texture overlay, so any comments on how my texture looks would be much appreciated

Skunk257, that thing looks huge, love the explosions but I can't see a killing monster in it.

Tried to make mine less looking like a polar bear and a little meaner and bigger too.

Tommoy I think you should make those lightblue lines so that they follow the shape of the body. Right now they don't help establish the shape.

Update
Thank you for the comment, skunk257. As you can see I gave up on the trees growing on the back of the juggernaut, because I imagine that beast as a relatively fast one, having a huge energy demand. So forest-growing will be difficult when it has to chase mammoths all day long. :)
Cool action in your piece.
Tommoy: I more liked the version without stripes.

Sounded a relaxing topic, so I'm taking a part :) At this moment, I've painted only a background:
http://tonic-art.com/gallery/cow/143_arctic_juggernaut/wip1.jpg
Now I see the vertical composition is bad. I'm going to cut bottom part, or add a empty bar at the bottom. Probably the second option. And the monster is a bit cropped, so I will enlarge canvas at right and paint more of creature body. And I would like to make feeling the monster is cramped inside canvas to emphasize its' big size.

ARCTIC JUGGERNAUT
In the white icy deserts of the arctic this creature is known as RAGE DEMON or the Arctic juggernaut. These are the name by which it is referred to in the legends of the Arctic. The creature knows no exhaustion due to the excessive pumping of adrenaline. The production of fatigue toxins is extremely less in its muscles- giving it extreme stamina, speed and strength. But the drawback is that it has an extremely fast metabolic system. So whatever it eats gets digested almost completely and very fast. Hence it has the urge to keep feeding. This monster can run for hours on end with ever increasing speed. Another awesome feature are the super-dense horn like bony protrusions that are arrayed all over its head and shoulders and that adorn its elbows, joints and the tip of its powerful tail. All these features and its awesome strength combined are the reason why its called the Arctic juggernaut. It can achieve extremely great speeds and thanks to its great strength and bony armor can crash through most obstacles. It has been known even to have bored right through icebergs. It is the supreme predator of the Arctic. It knows no fear and takes down animals far larger than itself thus doing justice to he name JUGGERNAUT.

Uh, I'm not sure if I finish as tomorrow I'm going to visit family (uhhhh!) and it will take nearly whole Sunday. I would be glad if deadline was shifted by few hours, or to Monday :bashful:
Anyway, there are WIPs as so far:
First, I have enlarged the canvas go get a better composition and more area for creature
http://tonic-art.com/gallery/cow/143_arctic_juggernaut/wip2.jpg
Then started to paint a gorilla-tyrannosaurus rex thing and tilted the canvas to add more dynamic
http://tonic-art.com/gallery/cow/143_arctic_juggernaut/wip3.jpg
Then, becuase the scenery was like a desert, I've desaturated colours completely and flipped horizontally the canvas to get a refreshed view on composition. I though the left side was unbalanced and I've added some rocks and "powned" rocks around creature

Oh man, running out of time.
Got re-inspired and took another swing at this after a few days of despair.
Tonic & Trevor- both are freaking sweet.

you know how it is when you find a texture that works, you use the hell out of it till there's almost nothing recognizable left

Hey all, been a while since my last participating in cow (well over a year :))
Guess I like "me crush you" themes.
Anyway here are some workflow snapshots, the finished image is in final entries thread (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=2258512&postcount=20)
I'll post some comments tomorrow, until then - :rocker:

final
Artist: Skullbeast
Concept: Pouel
Arctic juggernaut of death. Once every millennium the climate goes through changes that throw the land in to utter turmoil. The polar ice caps melt and unleash frozen prisoners that cannot survive without the cold. These beasts roam the land and smash the life from all in they're path and in addition they are highly magnetic and all compasses point directly to them as if they were North. The Pouel devour the fallen and convert their bodies into ozone. Once the ravaged and depleted lands ozone layer is repaired the poles freeze and the Pouel return to their slumbers.
