It's may. Time to get better at drawing. Big things are coming in June. Then, September marks the start of my senior year at NYU Film. Big things will happen then too.

Kicking things off with a couple of things from last year!

Forgive my scanning machine for it needs glasses.

**EDIT: Most recent stuff is at the END!**

These are more current, however they are not chronological, because I went back in time and drew posemaniacs on pages that had space. Gotta save paper. Your nature needs you.

Once again, pardon the quality. Dust can be very sneaky.

I wish the image categories had a "random" button. I can't afford to spend time choosing whether my piece of sketch is "fine art/personal" or "other"!

And now for act 3 - The most recent. by about a day. The recurring man with big chin is a character from my short which I will begin animating in June. I really need to get his construction down.

The other two are pure posemaniac madness, which you will see everyday (hopefully) from now until June begins!... or until you beg me to stop. . . . Anybody?

Am I getting better yet?
Last batch is 30 seconds, the rest are 1 minute each.

You know, at first the 500kb limit for uploads seemed like a pain, but now it makes so much sense. Big images are a bigger pain to load.. for my internet anyway. It's so stolen..

isso09
May 12th, 2009, 07:34 PM
This batch is for yesterday and today. I must now stop apologizing for the insolence of the scanners I use. They're not mine, after all...(But I'm sorry)

30 seconds mixed with one minute mixed with brush pen for experimentation..which failed.

I am getting better, though. I figured out how. . . At least at this stage. Do books often help?

And I have another question for all you millions of listeners out there. How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

So I went to the "(dead) Bodies" exhibit in New York last night. It was a special "sketch night" for artists only. And it was exactly the same as the last time I was there sketching with my budday Neolight (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=101370&page=3&highlight=neolight), except there were no tourists looking over our shoulders, which was annoying and flattering at the same time. But yeah, as you can see, it's much harder to draw from irl. It is clear that I still don't wtf I'm doing with the pencil. Guess I should stick to something that requires no talent. Like . . . hot dog eating contests. Which are also dominated by asian people. shit.

Anyway, in addition to my excerpts from the "(dead) Bodies" exhibit (http://www.hipsterwave.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/xzibit_yo_dawg.jpg) I have provided material proof of my own improvement - latest sketches from posemaniacs.

And it turns out I've been flipping my images the wrong way because I scan them upside down. Golly!

Now commencing one photographic study a day program!
First colour image WOO!

Needless to say, I did not detail her at all. It was stressful enough having photoshop quit every 5 minutes. So get off my case about not drawing her nipples, OK!?

This study oughta bring in the hits!

When I saw the picture I fell in love with the pose and expression, both of which I managed to botch, but whatever. At least it's colouring practice.

Great first SB page.. are you using pose maniacs? keep posting!

isso09
May 20th, 2009, 07:56 PM
So I moved to 1.5 minute sketching because I figured.. what's the hurry?
Because of this move and my new sketchpad (IRL), my pose studies have improved. I still don't manage to stick it all in 1.5 mins anyway, so many moons will pass before I speed things up.

Also included free of charge are sketches of Kevin Bacon and some other moderately successful actors. . . and a bunch of people in the audience. From LIFE!

coldrum - thanks for stopping by. I don't so much use pose maniacs as I AM a posemaniac. cheers.

Thanks DStraX!

Well by popular demand... Here is another study. ~1.5 hrs. Didn't want to spend time on the face so she looks scary.

I'm going to start doing studies from my brand new anatomy book.. soon. And gonna try to keep with one painting a day routine. If I miss a day, I will make up for it with two. (this one is from yesterday)

Here is a little bit of variation from my sketchbook. The pages i'm most embarrassed about didn't make it. And if I uploaded only the things I'm proud of, this thread would be empty.

Reverse chronological order. Some are from a book. some from the museum of natural history. some from my head. I don't seem to be improving...hm.

Moved onto 60 sec posemaniacs. Still can't really make it. we shall see. Maybe when I'm old and good I will look back at this page of the thread and laugh. How silly I was..

Another naked study. Roughly an hour. No time for face or good proportions. Not happy with the colours at all.

When will it be page 2?!

isso09
June 6th, 2009, 09:36 PM
OH my GOD, is that from the head? He's never done anything like that before.

Well, boys and girls, it's time to put it out there. I'm actually a terrible artist, because I can't draw for sh!t from imagination, and these are here to prove it!
They're supposed to be stage and character designs for a potential ripoff of a very popular game. Won't tell you what the game is though!

BUT (http://www.cumm.co.uk/hairy%20butt.jpg) this IS a sketchbook, so these are just SKETCHES.. that took me about an hour each. Some amateur 19 year old could probably do these in 4 minutes. . . or seconds.

Looking on the bright side, it will be that much more impressive when I actually paint something good! If that ever happens.

ENJOY!

isso09
June 12th, 2009, 07:37 PM
Time to upload something good! I have faith that this will be the one that brings me to the second page.... (cross fingers)

Some studies from museums. Some suck. Some are..ok. Parrots were obviously from my head. I just thought about parrots all day tuesday.. Had to get it out.

I don't really put tooo much effort into shading.. Maybe I should start.

..I am gonna get SOO EFFICIENT at scanning things by the end of this year..

THanks for stopping by at my SB mate! You seem to be working hard indeed, and thats a great thing! To improve your working quality, you should blend some areas more, and use different edges, not just hard ones to make them more realistic. Good luck on your artistic journey!

Thanks everyone! I'm working to get better.

Well since I have so many adoring fans who will probably not come back to see this, I'm gonna post a little sneak peak into what's coming to this sketchbook on July 5th, and onwards.

This is from the real statue, not a photograph or a reproduction. Not that it matters, I obviously couldn't do it justice with my skill.

Made it nice and big so that you can't see the mistakes. Speaking of which, I'll dedicate a painting depicting subject matter of choice to the first person who points out the most obvious error.

Here is a painting from the head for you. These usually get some hits. This sketchbook is gonna go apeshit once I get back to the states!

Too bad I haven't improved...

I know there are mistakes, but it's time to move on. Was struggling with photoshop quitting. a Lot. But now I finally know that I just can't use rotation brush controls or.. explode.

Thanks for the comments guys!

Yo dude. Nice start here. You're fuckin rippin thru your studies. You're crankin that shit out. That's exactly the kind of momentum you want. Keep that shit up. It's good to see that you are focused on the human figure, that's the best place to start. Good to see that you are also including animals (a department I need a little work in).

Something I noticed about your paintings is that you seem to work within a narrow range of brush sizes. It's best to start with BIG brushes so you can establish all your basic forms (and colours!). From there on out you just want to keep working with smaller and smaller brushes as you narrow in on the details.

Keep rockin bro! You're almost on page 2.

isso09
July 1st, 2009, 04:45 PM
Peetaer: Thank you for your words of encouragement! I guess I didn't realize how much I shrink my brushes after the initial sketch. Will definitely keep that in mind!

Here is a new painting from the head. I figure I need to succeed with something simple before attempting ridiculous stuff that will take me hours to do. Too bad I failed again.

Just you wait. July 5th there will be an explosion of art. Everything that I've built up inside me from this trip will be released in a fiery celebration of creativity.

isso09
July 6th, 2009, 07:28 PM
Are you ready for this? The following are pages from my sketchbook that are exactly two weeks old. Anything you see in here is drawn from originals (and a little bit from imagination) on my trip to Italy and France. I hope you can track my miniscule degree of progress which I've accomplished over the last two weeks.

I will update this sketchbook everyday until I run out of stuff (which won't be soon considering I keep sketching new things). Coupled with these are studies and paintings I will be doing for the next week to keep the momentum of inspiration going. These ones are from photographs by John Tisbury (http://johntisbury.deviantart.com/). 45 mins each, except the better ones which took longer. I hope you like and criticize.

It all begins.. June 18, 2009:

isso09
July 7th, 2009, 05:24 PM
Quick post cuz I gotta go. This time I managed to get a shit 40-min doodle in. Drawing from imagination is good because it brings me back from my high horse to realize how much I actually suck at painting. In all honesty, though, it's not finished. I forgot to add smoke effects and lens flare so that you can't see how much it blows.

isso09
July 8th, 2009, 08:27 PM
I'm trying to figure out how the whole thumbnail thing works. Can anyone explain how I control what goes into the thumbnail of my post? Is it automatically the first image I upload or what?

Anyway, here's a NEW concept doodle from yesterday, just to make sure I could still draw. Whew. that was a close one.

Anyways. More of the same. Sketches and studies. I wish I could do this much in one day, but the studies are all I have time to do.. I'm such a slacker. Sketches are from June 20th.. I think. Pardon the scanning quality.

isso09
July 9th, 2009, 09:30 PM
These are the sketches for today (from June 21st). I REALLY slacked off so all you get is this piece of sh*t from my head. Maybe my avatar should be a picture of me with an open cranium and inside is just a smelly turd. And I'm smiling.

I think that will be my next painting. And I'll use ref this time..jeez.

Damn, it's gonna be a lot tougher to get to page 3 without anybody commenting. What happened, guys? :)

Oh and my condolences go to Algenpfleger (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2335838#post2335838) and his tendonitis. Damn waste of talent (for two weeks+), but that's what he gets for being a (d)ucking maniac. Anyway I hope he gets better soon. And stops listening to terrible music.

Imagination heavy today. June 22nd. I took the train to Florence, so not much at all. Trying out some values on a monster from imagination - very useful. It may not look like much, but I learned a hell of a lot. Also a colour study for a chance. I think I'm getting a hang of brushwork now. Hopefully this makes up for my slacking off for the past two days. AND I managed to see Ice Age 3 with a friend. Super.

This brings me to my next point. I'm spending all my time on art right now, but there are many visual artists who are younger and way better than me, that end up eventually making beautiful looking video games and movies that nobody wants to buy/watch/play because the story sucks balls. There is a drought of good story people out there and I'm trying to understand whether it's because people don't like it or aren't capable of it.

Wouldn't it be much easier for me to get a job as a good story person? My storyboards seemed to go over well at the blue sky portfolio review..so.. why am I wasting time doing something I'm more passionate about?

More updates. Two weeks ago this day I was more productive.

July 12th, 2009, 03:39 AM
Hi there, great to see so many updates.
I have definitely seen an improvement in these sketchbook pages. The lines and proportions are pretty m,uch spot on. Good job on those.
I would have loved to see some more shadows, even if very bsoc ones, to add form and teh third dimension, but if you were studying proportons and movement thats fine.
The digitals are'nt on the same level. You can definitely see how youre drawing from life is better than from fotos.
AND PLEASE use bigger brushes. Just do it! You will get so much better images in the end. Clearly you are going to need some smaller ones at some point, but especially for studies the bigger the better. Size does matter in this respect!

Also I know what you mean when you say statues ruin your self esteem, hehe.

Cheers

Janos: I can't thank you enough for your critique. I think you'll find that today's b&w studies are much improved, thanks to your advice about big brushes. I also re-read PSG's art tutorial so..that helped too.

AmbientChroma: Thanks for the encouragement! It came at a good time. After seeing what younger people (http://www.robertdraws.com/) are doing I was about to give up drawing and pursue story instead.

Of course, today is the last day of heavy updates. I'm probably just gonna do a study a day till the end of the summer, along with some colour make-overs of my later sketches from the trip. And self portraits. And still life. Aaaaagggh, when will I have time to do my animation?

Note to people: I know janaschi posted in her deviantjournal (http://janaschi.deviantart.com/journal/25873840/) recently about LAB colour mode, and of course I painted my colour study in it. Except, that was stupid, because you can't save a Jpeg in LAB. It looked so beautiful, and now I had to try to salvage all the colours through various adjustments after I saved it. If only you could see how it looked on my monitor...

SLACKER.

I'm not gonna leave today's post at that, because I've heard from W.I.P.podcast that you have be professional on the internet. And if I just write whatever comes to mind nobody will want to hire me upon seeing this.

Tried a new approach with the face and it didn't work too well as you can see. I need to simplify more, because clearly I don't have a good grasp of head forms.

isso09
July 19th, 2009, 08:34 PM
Guess I'm getting to page 3 on my own...
Broke my thumb drive today. Probably too much forgetting it in the scanner computers at my lab. Tear.
Also, really lame colour study, and the face looks nothing like the model in my b&w. I guess it'll do. Just discovered blizzcast today. More talking to listen to while I draw/paint.

isso09
July 20th, 2009, 03:31 PM
Such a shame that the sketches are so much better than the crap I did today. Maybe I should actually participate in chow or eow? Maybe if I actually spend a couple of hours on a planned painting I'll get a lot better? And once a week is probably often enough to actually be useful without taking away too much of my time...
What do the many followers of this sketchbook think?

isso09

My LAST round of statues. From here on it's no longer everyday updates, and anatomy studies.
Trying to brush up on my industrial design chops. Or lack thereof. Maybe I can broaden my repertoire a little bit.

First of the last two dumps of art you have to bear from me. Studies are bones. Next up is muscles and then I'm done.

Tried photoshopping from life for the first time today... I'm almost TOO embarassed about how badly I mutilated my face to upload it.. But I guess if I don't, you won't be able to see my progress later on!

Also, tried some still life. Was impressed by how much more variety of colours there is and by how futile my attempts to represent it were..CAN YOU GUESS WHAT IT IS?!

I guess at this point only Jason Manley's colour workshop can help me..

isso09
July 23rd, 2009, 02:32 PM
Muscles Part One.
Guess I'm just gonna go ahead and copy the entire anatomy book minus the words.
..ENJOY!

Maybe I should change my signature... Nobody ever replies to any of my posts, so I guess nobody actually likes me. Or maybe I should just change my attitude....Nah.

You've done loads of studies! That's great.
Push yourself to do some longer studies, take them to a higher level of finish.

You've got a good eye for color, do more.

RE your question: Hard to explain how I make my brushstrokes... Be efficient with your lines and brush, try your best to put the right line in the right place with each stroke.

Keep it up.

isso09
July 26th, 2009, 08:47 PM
HunterKiller: Thanks for dropping by. It's hard to find the time to do longer studies these days. I wish I could..

Damn I still need to fix the thumbnail to rack in the customers.

W00t! Just listened to 12 hours of Jason Manley in two days. Can't wait to apply all those Godly secrets about colour. I think now I know exactly how complicated painting is, and how badly I suck, which is the first out of four stages of knowledge.

Now a little bit about what's here. Hands studies, sketch for chow and a sketch for a blizzard fan art I'm gonna be working on. Also I think I'll upload a wip for this coming cow! Putting way more effort into this one and I think It's gonna pay off!

July 29th, 2009, 01:49 PM
Wow you work so hard on all these studies! thanks for stopping by my sketchbook btw.

Things are getting better, but we could see even more progress in some of the earlier photo studies - It feels to me that you arent spending enough time in the under drawing stage - making light lines to get the placement and volume blocked in before going to the contours. Try and play around more in the early drawing stage untill it feels good, then solidify your lines in a more precise manor. This may not be the way you draw down the road, but its worth a shot as through experimenting you'll often learn a lot.

that being said, the new studies here are looking sharp and are so valuable! Great work on those!

Your digital paintings are getting better as you go - its not an easy thing to do, and just keep working hard. you're taking on challenging poses most of the time, and your brush strokes and confidence will go up as you learn the forms even better. see ya!

isso09
July 30th, 2009, 02:33 PM
Samuel Gray: Thanks man, will do!

Jakers: Thank YOU for stopping by. I was kinda confused when you mentioned "photo studies" and drawing, because the figure drawings were from life. I understand now, though, so thanks a lot for the advice!

Today we have LEGS! (Hooray!) As you can see I've slowed down a lot in my posts since I need to focus on my animation this summer, which it is already too late to finish, but I'll TRY!

Also on the menu are recent photo studies and life drawings. 1, 2, 5 and 20 minute poses, with a grand 1.2 hour colourful finale. I went to Marc Scheff's (http://www.dangermarc.com) figure drawing class here in NYC yesterday and had a fantastic and educational experience. It was great to paint in PS from life and I learned a ton. Also got to meet some awesome people, including but not limited to Jeff Himmelman, co-founder of one of my favorite podcasts (http://www.wippodcast.com) to paint to.

The second photo study was more of a brushing experiment. I got a sweet set from kieran yanner (http://www.kieranyanner.com/tutorials.htm) and whit brachna. Combined they might just quadruple my painting efficiency and that's never a bad thing.

Jakers

I'm seriously jealous of the volume of studies you do....where does my time go...wasted somewhere :)

You are right, when I said photo studies, I meant the life drawings - one of those things where you started a comment, restructured and didnt catch the mistake. I'm glad you took the time to figure out what I meant instead of skipping over it in confusion. I like the fast figures on this page, some are so solid.

The live PS painting, specific mucle breakdowns, variety in the jet study...this update ROCKS!

August 4th, 2009, 02:11 PM
Jakers: Thanks dude! Jason Manley says you gotta do 4 hours of studies and 4 hours of imagination drawing/painting a day. I only do 3 total, so I guess I'm screwed!

Anyway I'm almost in the end of my anatomy book. The only things left to do are face parts and whole figures. After that, it's Bridgeman study time. Don't know if that will be a good idea, but I am a gambling man.

Additionally, I think I'm finally reaching decent stroke efficiency with value studies. Now all I gotta do is make those strokes lightning fast! And also I need to use those painting skills in colour studies. Trying not to colour pick as much as possible so that I learn to choose the right colour right away. I'm learning so much about colour after the Jason Manley workshop, it's taking my brain a while to digest it. Just wish they'd come out with the composition download!

sweet landscapes bud! I like how dark and saturated that middle hill is in the last one, but it might have a little too much color, especially looking at the rock that feels like its run beside it. The snow one is neat as well - but it feels like there is a white/grey vs. blue battle going on and it doesnt quite feel unified in that sense to me.

The clouds in the chopper picture are neat! nice textures, mine are regularily flat. keep at it! OH and if someone has time for 8 hours of art each day...they must be doing it for a living :)

Jakers: Word. Thanks a lot for all the crits!

Well its time to upload things again. I have got a scanner and I have got an internet so updates will probably flow pretty regularly from now on. Gotta get to that page 3...

Decided to do another self portrait today and failed again. Even though it was a better failure than last time. I'm terrible at faces.

I'm back into the swing of things now. Getting up early, doing at least 3 hours a day. Now the routine is page of posemaniacs + 30-45 min pencil study. 45 min B&W study and 45-60 colour study.

Maybe I should change the name of my sketchbook to "update diarrhea"? ENJOY!

I'm sorry I abandoned you, my dear CA.org. Now you won't be able to track the entirety of my progress, however little there is. There will be no more scanning because that takes too long, but the digitals will be going up starting NOW!

Over winter break I'm doing a portrait and an animal study plus an environment from imagination per day. Also working on EOW and Bobby Chiu's contest, while working from our good friend Burne Hogarth in my real-life sketchybook.

First come the life drawings I haven't posted yet. Then studies I haven't posted yet. Tomorrow I will upload all I've done over winter break. I don't know if I've uploaded the archangel yet or not, but it's there just to epicify this post even more!

isso09
January 1st, 2010, 09:26 PM
This is all I've done over winter break so far. I'm not sure what exactly is wrong, there are works I've done months ago that are better than most of the stuff in here. Maybe its the fact that I don't have a desk and a comfortable chair? hmm...

First portraits from photos, then environments from imaginaaation, then animals from photos.

Thanks Twan! I started doing a few watercolours, but photoshop is sooo much easier.

Will try to update daily from now on, that is, draw enough for an update every day. Today you get two portraits, and three doodles from the head. Oh and an illustration for Bobby Chiu's contest. I desperately need crits, otherwise I'll be lost forever. ENJOY!

If you read this, can you please tell me how to comment in between attachments? Thanks.

I know I haven't been doing enough, but i'm learning! It seems I can only work on 3 pieces a day. I'm finally realizing what values are, and how to eat them.

Also a big epiphany: Use hard round brush instead of stupid painterly thing! It's so much easier, faster and more intuitive.

More or less chronological order. This time also uploading a landscape from life and two sketches from the head - EoW wip and a character. Crits are always welcome!

I don't know about you guys (echo?), but I see a little bit of improvement, which is very encouraging. Since I got back from vacation, I took a few days off, but now I'm back to painting. Studies every morning with the crimson daggers and sh*t.

I realized I gotta focus on one area at a time to be most efficient in learning things, so since I'm doing Hogarth studies in pencil, I'll focus on faces and then move to other parts of the body. No more environments for now.

So portraits, life drawing/still life, and imagination sketch and wip. Enjoy!

Some more stuff. According to my calculations, in about 3 months I will be finished with hogarth's dynamic anatomy. That book is doing wonders to my everything, and once I get my intuos4 I will start doing those studies in photoshop and you will be able to see them.

This is a wip, another still life and studies. new head from imagination. enjoy.

AlexTooth: Thanks man! Always good to see a fellow dagger drop by! I will start on that master study next week, I swear.

So, you guys asked for kickass imagination work?!!? Here it is!

Finally finished my "sketch." I started this exactly a month ago and spent about 5 hours on it ironing out the composition and rendering. I believe it's the first painting where the colours online actually look better than the original. Anyway, I've learned a ton, main point being not to jump into colour right away. Even Cole didn't do that. And I probably should have used reference too...

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/S24A0RMorvI/AAAAAAAAAlg/iFGx_iCYgME/s800/Sketchingjan6.jpg

And the Hoe-Girth studies for today. Trying out different brushes. Soft/hard combination seems to work much better than just hard. I've learned so much from doing these digitally, it's not even funny.

Nice progress from 1st page to 3rd. I know working with photo studies really helps, but it can create stiff looking images. But you seem to be doing enough life drawing to balance it out. The photo studies on page three have a really life to them, maybe because they are done quicker with more confidence, Keep up the good work.

February 8th, 2010, 05:20 PM
BRANDONJONES: Thanks dude! You are correct. As I'm doing more and more studies, I become more efficient with brush strokes so I don't have to render things out to make them look good. I think you will see the difference between stiff and lively studies in the two portraits i did today.

It's either my face or my painting skills. Either way, I'm not pleased with the results.
Self-Portrait ~ 1 hour.

The following pages of the Hogarth Dynamic Anatomy book are taken up by Hogarth's own prtraits in various mediums, which I don't really see the point of copying. So I'm just gonna do portraits of my own:

It's been really tough the past couple of days. Demon's Souls grabbed a hold of me and wouldn't let go. I don't know if I'll be able to quit altogether but I'll try. As a result, I have a bunch of drawings backed up, but I will hopefully use this congestion to gain momentum and update every day for the remainder of the week.

Also I started a bunch of grayscale imagination paintings, which I think you will like.

More heads. I think the problem with these studies is that I forget to zoom out when I do em. USE YOUR ZOOM TOOL, KIDS!

I decided to be a good person from now on. It's the more efficient thing to do. This is why my life drawing has improved so much. Unfortunately I couldn't make the wednesday because of the snow day, in honour of which I decided to visit my good friend Stephen Colbert and ask him a question before the show. Watch for me when the camera pans in the beginning of last wednesday's show. I'm in the top left section of the audience.

The imagination faces got better (or maybe just different) from my two trips to the MET. I think they did me well.

Also came up with a definitive schedule for myself, that I will probably fail to follow anyway. Two pages of Hograth a day, and one imagination sketch per page. Still life on mondays (with the exception of today). Self-portraits on Fridays. Who knows what on the weekend. If I have time from all the parties. WOOOOO!

More Hogarth on the neck. Torso is next. Going for two days in a row of updates. wooo!
(The more rendered ones are from imagination)

It's funny, usually some artist gets good, displays a lot of finished work and gathers up a following who want to see his process, so he/she starts a sketchbook. I'm doing the opposite of that.

Pretty self-explanatory really. School was closed today, so I'm gonna update. Moving on to the torso with Hogarth, while staying on the head in life drawing. Which happened yesterday.

In other news I got a Gnomon sub yesterday, and although I haven't tried it yet, I recommend it to everyone! It's been incredibly useful.

Life drawings were 10, 10, 20, 20, 20. (minutes)

I didn't actually do any drawing over spring break. These are the remnants of what I did before and what I did just this morning, which is just a hogarth study.

I've been watching the Gnomon workshops sporadically and I highly, highly recommend it. Or at least get the videos with Scott Robertson. He taught me crazy things about value, things that I would have probably learned if I went to real art school.

Before he left my apartment for Ireland, I painted a portrait of my dear friend and world traveller, Travis. I'm gonna start doing a lot more friend portraits. If you recognize him on the street or anywhere else, (as I'm sure you would seeing as how he has hoes in different area codes) tell him I said hello.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/S5dNOKTkm-I/AAAAAAAAA9Y/2iRrFw9AOsM/s800/Travis.jpg

I think I had a little under an hour so I didn't have time to fill out all the necessary information.

These are more or less chronological. Toward the end I began to try to achieve more and more realistic lighting, with things like atmospheric perspective and decay. I know it's too early for that, but it's still fun. The latest study may seem like a step back, but that's because I forgot to put down the full value range. Also I don't know where to put speculars. Gotta still life some shiny surfaces, damn it! Anyways, tomorrow's study will be better.

Gotta still life some shiny surfaces, damn it! Anyways, tomorrow's study will be better.

I know I didn't do a study today, but there are some things that I forgot to post from yesterday. These are some more value practices from the things I've learned from Gnomon.

Also, random sketches that I started in class. Shows you that despite all of my silly claims about how my drawing is okay for now and I need to focus on value and colour are false. Drawing is the key to everything. And I can't do it very well.

jackpot_anjr90: Thanks man. I'm gonna try. Schoolwork gets in the way though.

Still trying to figure out values. Gonna try and refrain from disparaging comments. The bottom thing is from life. I was trying to figure out how white objects are lit by a window. Anyway I'm learning a lot. I'm gonna start approaching hogarth in a new way. I will look at a picture, draw how I think the anatomy would look without looking back at it, and then adjust when I'm done. After that, I will light it and try to get values right. But it won't work. Wish me luck.

Alright. I know that every time I update I say that I'm gonna start updating regularly and then forget about it for a week. Well this time I'm not beating around the bush. I'm quitting studies and focusing on my film's storyboards until the deadline for a secret Dreamworks story training program. Which is in a week or so. The deadline, that is. Anyway, Hopefully by that point I won't forget everything I know about values, and, since I'll be drawing constantly, maybe I'll even get better. Wish me luck.

These guys are both from imagination, but I used a little Hogarth for reference on muscle position and pose, which is what I plan on doing from now on. After I return to doing studies, that is.

Well apparently I have trouble life drawing attractive women. The problem is either lack of practice or simply the fact that seeing an attractive female body makes me lose focus. Uh oh.

Also we tried a longer pose and I realized I had no idea what to do. My rendering skills need a lot of work. What else is new.

I've got time for a breather until the final plunge. If you know what I mean -

Here's a few hogerths. I really need to catch up before I'm forced to return this book to the library.

I'm really putting time into these guys now. I need to learn how form works, maybe even more so than where the muscles are. But I would imagine this will only do me good later on. Also I really badly need to do a still life, because I still don't have an efficient technique for rendering.

First comes the hogarth dump. I started to put twice as much time into these, hoping to render them realistically. However, this is not all that useful without still life practice, which I'm going to do tonight or tomorrow.

So.. I graduated. Everyone's been congraduating me but I don't really feel that accomplished. All I did was not quit school, which, admittedly, would have been a more rational choice if I chose to pursue live action. Anyway I have a lot of paintings on the backlog. I'm starting work on my film tomorrow and returning to daily studies. Finally schoolwork is out of the way. I'm pumped.

This is my first round of hogarths with cs5 on my new laptop. It's so much more pleasant to draw on this thing, I can't even describe it. But actually I just started using the same method I do for life drawing in my studies, which is, starting with brushes and not lines.

These dudes are positioned roughly in the same poses as the guys from the book, and I occasionally glance at it for reference, however they are lit from imagination. They are in chronological order, done today and yesterday. By the end I started to experiment with different brushes and I think I kinda like it. Got inspired by LINRAN's post on ca.org. I have a lot more stuff on the backlog, but sometimes I just forget to update. Most of the time, actually. Still life tonight. Finally.

There are never enough hours in a day. Or maybe there is just too much internet and errands. I should either get a secretary or become a monk. I'll make the choice when I start my own animation company.

I took two days to pick my monitor, and then several more hours to pick a calibrator. I probably made the wrong choice, but it probably won't make any difference at all. For the record, it's the HP ZR24W with Spyder3Elite. Next week will be a good week.

Life drawings from last saturday. The model was fantastic. It's my life painting anniversary soon, so I'm trying to ease my way back into colour. Maybe we shall see some improvement? Question mark?

Tonight I'm going to life drawing and doing a portfolio piece afterwards. Since I can't finish my film by the end of the summer, I'm just going to dedicate one day a week for a character or environment, which will benefit from all the daily studies and animation I will be doing. Okay so first weekend is up and my first piece is below. Took me about 9 hours. It's a drawing I started over a year ago. I'm gonna tie up all my loose ends like this first, as a way of getting into doing finished renderings.

Additionally, I've got life drawing from saturday (decided to do my 20 mins in colour from now on) and studies from this morning. I decided to revisit my Scott Robertson DVD's and render some planar shapes from imagination. The second one is a work in progress that was too complicated for me to figure out today. By the end of the week, I think i'll move to curved surfaces.

I guess if I want to build up any sort of readership, I should deliver more on promises. Well, this week I decided to focus on my movie, and still did not manage to finish the animatic. I blame errands, food and sleep. Now, I'm taking a break to celebrate the birth of this nation instead of doing my weekly portfolio piece. Allow me to leave with you a parting gift.

Well, Nate Wragg told me to keep my blog/web presence, so that's what I'll do. Sorry I couldn't enter the contest, Bobby Chiu. I had to spend all day yesterday and today wrestling with After Effects CS5. I ended up rendering each shot one by one, shutting down my computer and putting it in the fridge to cool in between. I had so many colourful ideas to scribble into this post, but this battle sucked all the life out of me. Nah, that's not the way to write.

I'm still trying to find what I'm capable of. Still playing as an adult, and afraid of losing. Let's try and make this more personal.

Well, Scott Robertson, you were right. Diagonal lighting is harder to do than top or side lighting by a factor of four. What the hell was I thinking when I was trying to diagonally light arms. It's okay though, it's roughly right if light was coming from that angle. It would just be a silly decision to light it from there..

Over the three hours we spent together, I've grown very attached to these three cylinders. I will remember this saturday night forever, guys. Even you, diagonal.

Artists are retarded. They train their brain to evaluate superfluous information about reality that is really meant to go straight to subconsciousness. That's the trick. Anyone can do it. Now I just have to figure out my favorite kind of information to deconstruct.

I can see, you have masterd painting from reference and basic shapes perfectly. But the painting from imagination aren't by far as good. If your final goal is to painnt from imagination I think you sould move on and practise more construction of scene and imaginative character design.

asiJa: Masterd is a strong word, my friend. All will be done in due time.

Definitely gonna do another sphere before moving onto curves. Probably local light. I decided to include a "process sketch" this time. Guess which one it is.

Sometimes doing nothing is the most productive way to spend your time.

DAME! I used the sphere from yesterday and it STILL took me one hour to do local lighting. My my. The values are a little off because my web storage facilities increase the contrast for effect, but you get the picture. Of course, I could keep rendering this for hours with marginal improvement, but that would be pointless until I get an actual sphere and light it.

What a productive night it was! You exercise your brain before going to sleep and this is what you get. It gets so excited that it can't stop thinking. Gift and curse. As is everything. Maybe it was the sugar? We will find out tonight.

Anton, you don't understand what you are capable of. You can't see the movie from the other side. If only you knew!

Now, onto new horizons and new curved surfaces!!!

Seven out of eight done. Five more tomorrow. Something tells me I went too fast to learn as much as I could have.

I've been re-listening to this podcast (http://animationpodcast.com/) and added two more heroes to my altar. Although I'm nowhere near as skilled as them, I can definitely relate to Glen Keane's passion for drawing form and James Baxter's passion for.. movement..

Mr. Keane was incredibly inspiring because he did exactly what I'm doing now when he was younger (only he was maybe 12). His dad gave him Hogarth's dynamic anatomy, and he had no idea what animation was when he went to Calarts.

Mr. Baxter's draw to animation was copying and studying action. He was fascinated by ballet, professional sports and other disciplines where efficient motion is honed. I don't want to jump to conclusions here because I could probably extrapolate myself to any famous animator just as easily, but - animation is really the bomb. It's so much more complex, challenging and (therefore) rewarding than any other medium I've had the pleasure of dabbling in.

I came to film school because I did not know of a better way to combine my two passions: drawing and music. Animation is definitely the road of me.

I'm falling more and more in love with animation and life. I feel like Theoden (http://arwen-undomiel.com/images/theoden/Theoden_RotK_4.jpg) after he's been awakened. Too bad I forget to write down my ideas, otherwise I could have a better metaphor.

Hey man your stuff is looking really good. Nice studies, I like how you convey the value ranges so quickly and loosely on those figures, it seems to work well.
All those rendering studies from the Scott Robertson's DvDs are looking really good, I need to actually sit down and go over those myself.
Hows your movie going? Also, are you done with the livestream now or do you plan on getting back into them later on?
The portfolio pieces are looking good too. Are you making them for anything specific? Freelance work maybe?
No real crits or anything because you seem to be on the right path and know what you need to study, keep it up man, good luck.

I don't want to rise to the top badly enough. My drive is still in infancy. At this stage I still need external influences such as life drawing classes, contests, web activities and such to continue pushing and improving. It'll be tough to start the machine again once I get back from vacation.

When you get mad at things not going right, or somebody being a dumbass, you're really getting mad at yourself for reacting to external forces in a certain way.

Your organs, especially your brain could sure use a rest, albeit every once in a while.

It sure is a little funny how all the terrible content that Disney releases are in part what allows Pixar movies to exist.

Hey,

I was drawn in by the title of your sketchbook, heh. ;) First I would like to say that you have some great studies and I really like some of your early sketch work. I also like the Portfolio piece #2 (the wolf jump).

I study at an atelier and for the first two years the focus is entirely drawing. Nothing but drawing. Then you move to monochromatic painting and finally, lastly, on to color. I suggest if you would like to improve your values to take out the color component for now. Any great piece of art that cannot hold up as a monochromatic piece usually is not a good composition to begin with on the value scale.

Also...another key factor that may help: SQUINT! Simply look at an object, squint and put down the value patches that you see. It sounds simple, it is simple, and it works wonders.

It may be beneficial to try some Cast copies (even if you remain digital instead of charcoal or pencil) or try some master copy drawings. These really help train your eyes in value.

Okay...enough advice for now. Keep up the good work and you will progress and do great. All you need is perseverance. :)

love,
lara :)

Hey man, nice stuff, keep it up. I still need to get going on those Scott Robertson exercises and blocking in quick values on figures. These past two weeks for me should have been much more productive.

I think the advice given above is useful, working only with value to really help understand things before moving into color. At least that's what I've been doing and find it helpful. I also think working more with pencil and drawing as opposed to value and color work would help strengthen your basic drawing skills.

Keep it up brah.

NiyanaMae: Thank you so much for your advice. I actually quit colour several months ago, and only started to get back into it since I need to make a portfolio (and they need some colour pieces).

Admittedly, I really wanted to argue with you about it, but you are right. I need to swallow my pride and get back into value studies, since they help so much. I only stopped them to focus on my film, but now I'm going all out into art. Get ready for some Bargue, Hogarth and Scott Robertson!

Untouched24: Yeah dude, you better get back to work. I've been working with pencil a lot, I'm just too lazy to scan it in :D

Clinton Street Baking Company impression. 40 mins = unfinished. Had to eat breakfast while doing it. Forgive me if these look dark. My monitor done uncalibrated himself.

It doesn't matter what method you use, what brushes or what tricks you try to pull to draw things that look pretty. It's all about how your brain sees the things in front of you. That's why a great artist will be great in any medium.

Last one is technically a 45, but it was done in 40. I just kept pushing values around for no reason.

I've developed a perfect program for concept artists. Behold:

1. Scott Robertson to learn rendering from imagination and inner workings of light. Also trains your brain to see values.

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/THZx325abFI/AAAAAAAABnE/ZYZ5N6JSKVM/s800/Aug%2026%202010.jpg

2. Burne Hogarth's butt men to practice rendering complex forms from imagination.

Step one. Cut a hole in the box:

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/THcl9bFzAUI/AAAAAAAABnc/zDaRybaDzj4/s800/Aug%2026%20a.jpg

Step two. Put your junk in that box:

http://lh3.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/THcl-XZqL5I/AAAAAAAABng/94jU_oTDCr0/s800/Aug%2026%20b.jpg
(it's like he's got two different lights on him. and neither of them works like a real light.)

3. Copying Charles Bargue's drawing course to practice rendering, and train your eye for classical design.

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/THcl8Ec5xmI/AAAAAAAABnY/4dEZ19e6koo/s800/Aug%2026.jpg[I/MG]

Paper's nice, but you need to scan it and its bad for the environment. Now I will only use my sketchbook for sketching. All life drawing will be wacom'd.

Forgot to post yesterday. My uber week of life drawing was pretty much useless, because I'm only now starting to come back to where I was at the end of it. Simplify and use hard round. Does it ever get easier?

Every time I do something well, I can't repeat it. Maybe I shouldn't even try.

a la bapsi: Thanks. I'm just trying to learn it. Though I have a feeling I'm way overdue for a master study.

Design is directing the eye. When you are drawing (especially at the sketching stage) you are directing the attention of the viewer with line. That's why it's called disegno.

Quick sketching is basically making notes on where you want shapes and weight to go. You do this by way of exaggerating certain lines instead of copying the them from the form. That's how people develop a style. It's simplification. It's your understanding of the structure of your object, which deepens the more you study it, until eventually your shorthand come close to being as subtle as life itself.

I don't know if the line drawings are actually worth posting at this stage. I'm not very good at drawing on my tablet. Though maybe they are worth posting just to overwhelm whoever is looking at this with the amount of drawing I do.

Aside from your jeans, the only reason you're smarter than other people is the fact that when you were a kid you asked more "why" questions than necessary. Don't ask too many questions. If you look far enough ahead, nothing is worth doing because you deprive yourself of the journey and get to the end result, the effect of which will shortly wear off.

Also, empty your mind and be like water. Last one messed up by my laptop monitor. From now on paintings are gonna be spit spot.

There is something about the brush strokes, or brush quality that I really like about your paintings. Gestural, but accurate. Also, your post 142 is amazing.
Probably someone has asked this before but I can't find if you say it here.... what brush settings do you use?

isso09

MyioDeSopsia: Thanks man. Now I just need to translate gesturalness into finished illustrationness. My reply is in your sketchy.

If you work on a problem long enough, the solution will present itself.

We are choosing to enjoy two or three experiences at a time. As I am writing this, I am also eating a salad. Plus I may remember to text somebody or to vacuum the floor, and as we all know it takes five minutes to get back to any task after being interrupted. The more things you choose to do at once, the more shallow your experiences will be, let alone how tasking it is on your mind. It might seem like you get more done, but personally I've noticed that the stupid mistakes I make because of multitasking eat up all the time I might have saved. I prefer to live a fulfilling life, in which you use your full attention to experience the now, however I can't bring myself to live that way. Efficiency is too deeply ingrained in my brain.

You can also gather unrelated reference for shape language ideas.

Exaggeration in drawing is just another trick for seeing form. Once you amass enough of those tricks, you can keep your brain away from relaxing into "regular" seeing mode for long enough to complete the image.

These are from the past two days. The reason my updates have been slacking...will be unveiled soon.

Nice man, you're updating a lot, makes me look bad. Good work, you seem to be studying the right things so there's not much for me to say.
I was curious as to how you approach your life paintings/figures. Those quick value figures you do. I need to do those myself but find it strangely difficult to find a good approach to blocking in the values. What are the general brushes/settings you use, and how do you tackle them? Working dark to light, vice versa? Or just going straight in there and trying to match each value? How long does one generally take you?
Keep up the good work.

Untouched24: My dear homie, you flatter me again with your visit and your question. I will respond in your sketchbook.

I should really be doing these at night, since there is too much glare on both screens to read values correctly. But I liked how they turned out like zombies in #6.

Another interesting thing about these is that sometimes simplifying to this degree limits the value scale. If you are doing longer studies, for example, you would leave room for white and black until the very end. Here, if you put in that kind of contrast, you would miss out on some key saturation in between.

Thought I'd post some line art today since the model was such a baller. Hopefully the poses come through. He gave me a glimpse at how much I don't know about the figure.

Also, I think I finally came up with a technique for quick rendering. It doesn't really change how much information I convey, but it looks nicer and lays down a better groundwork for finishing. It works in B&W so far. The colour sketch sort of failed this time.

What the shit?!
Never saw a page as long as this one! :D

Nice work, you really work hard! Keep it up and it will pay for you.
The only critique is that in my opinion you sometimes blend toooo much. Then all looks so soooft and smooooth that it look unnatural.

Perhaps it's just my two cents, but hey :D

Greetings, Silwynar

silwynar: Thanks buddy! I'm still trying to strike a balance between blending too much and having too many hard edges. Also, I'm very proud of how long this thread is. My lack of posting in other people's sketchbooks yields few visitors, making it a solitary but saturated treasure trove of my effort.

I like digital paintings that resemble traditional mediums because you can see the artist's skill through how much information is transmitted in each stroke. Anyone can sit there and render until it looks like the model they used for 'reference.'

This took about an hour, mostly because of drawing issues. If only I did these every day.

razorb: Thank YOU for stopping by. I need to get on the imagination train. CHOO! CHOO!

Wow. Lots of things to cover. It's my post #100 on my blog (http://mantontheblog.blogspot.com).

First, I've been thinking.

Your degree of understanding of anatomy, lighting, composition etc varies, however 'polishing' a piece allows you to make it seem like you know how all the parts of your painting work without actually bestowing you with that knowledge. As such, it is more advisable to use reference and studies to avoid ever having to 'polish' a piece.

I want to able to say "I worked my ass off for Comic Con and now I have this awesome job." But who can seriously call painting work?

Tutorials or process videos are very fascinating, but it's very unlikely that they will help you draw better. You will never think like Bobby Chiu (http://www.imaginismstudios.com/) or break down values like Hannes (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=114449) . Though being exposed to a style like Sam Nielson (http://artsammich.blogspot.com/search/label/Learning) has certainly made me tear apart my old way of rendering and search for a new one. There are no shortcuts.

There's a difference between neglecting to render something and leaving in only the strokes that are necessary for the beholder to see the form in three dimensions the same way he/she views life. I want to learn how to do the latter.

Learning design is just a matter of getting loose, I think. You develop a couple of tools over the course of learning how to draw (oval, straight line, curve, scribble, etc) which let you lay down the ground work for your picture as quickly as possible. As Matisse pointed out, this is where design starts, so pretty much anyone can do it. The problem is, afterwards you need to have a foundation in representation to pull your work into reality.

And now the work:

http://lh5.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/TKTEIjVeKhI/AAAAAAAACCc/3WPVgJMQ_TI/s800/crtoh.jpg

This still life is supposed to teach me cloth for an illustration I've been working on this week. It's gonna blow everyone away.

In honour of post #100 let's go back in time and throw in what I was doing exactly one year ago:

http://lh4.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/S13cnZM9M3I/AAAAAAAAAQU/JiuREwPF4pE/s800/Life-Sketches1.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/S13cnzu7KUI/AAAAAAAAAQY/DkBPKK4nSkg/s800/Life-Sketches2.jpg
http://lh4.ggpht.com/_80EvvrN2Lk4/S13corV0h2I/AAAAAAAAAQc/Lr6D7PaHMGQ/s800/Life-Sketches3.jpg

Those are twenties, except for the last one which is a forty. Did I get better?

And now the big reveal.

If you think of making a picture as a process that takes a certain amount of time with different stages (thumbnail, rough comp, colour comp, etc), then you should practice every part of the pipeline in order to be able to make a fully rendered painting. However, for the same reason that serving is more important than forehand or backhand in tennis, the beginning stages of the painting should be practiced the most. Furthermore, as you get better and quicker with the prep work and sketches by spending the same amount of time (1-3 hours) on a new piece daily, later stages of the pipeline get bumped down. After a month, instead of taking 2 hours to do line art, you may be able to have a simple finished piece in 3. This, among other reasons, is why my roommate (http://neolight.deviantart.com/) and I started Daily Duels (http://www.dailyduels.com) . I won't upload all the 18 pieces we've done so far, but here's something to bait your interest.

This is a piece I'm planning to take to finish to show companies how I handle monster anatomy, instead of polishing up my bogeyman. Which I don't think I ever uploaded, so you can have him today too. I'm really excited about the watery colour scheme for this one because green is something I haven't really explored, and in general it was always a hard colour for me to see.

At every point in the time it takes you to get better, looking at other artists' work is not only inspiring, but very informative. I've been struggling with edges for a while, and examining the solutions of various pros really helps.

Untouched 24: Updating your sketchy doesn't matter as much as doing the work. Which I'm actually really bad at doing lately. My film is on hold for a while. Trying to focus on illustration. We'll see if it pans out.

Returned to life drawing yesterday and just couldn't handle my bowels. And on that note, let me throw in the last two duels. Go to the website (http://www.dailyduels.com/?page_id=340). Because Justin finally uploaded his portfolio.

lemming-clone-: Thanks man! More light and more atmosphere coming.

ryanoir: Thanks budday! IlluXcon was incredible. If you ever have a chance to go, and you're into illustration (or even video games) it's the one to go to. You can just walk up to people like donato giancola and strike up a conversation, find out how they started, what drove them etc. Except you don't even need to because workshops on that are happening all day in the auditorium. So much info, so much inspiration.

Kendall: Yeah practice is all it is. Just gotta put in the hours!

Finally I returned to studies. It felt so good. I've improved so much since the last time I did them. They're gonna be so useful. Amazing. But for now, I have to stop. Here's why (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?p=2929041).

in2eternity: Thanks for the appreciation. I just used a hard round and a soft round airbrush. For the hair I usually use one of Whit Brachna's smear brushes. He's good.

Mr. Thorne: Stunning! That's a new one. Thanks a lot man! I'm very flattered.

I collected some thoughts here. They may be outdated, but worth sharing I think.

First of all, I uploaded my IlluXcon portfolio on my DeviantArt (http://isso09.deviantart.com) . I'm finally painting how I thought I could paint.

The only way to stop yourself from procrastinating is to have no choice in the matter. Instead of forcing yourself to do something you need to do, you eliminate urges to do anything else. Which is hard, because we're all just apes. And apes are very impulsive.

Procrastinating happens when you take breaks. If you keep working, nothing can stop you. Or me at least..

Really it's the people that do go out on the weekend that are the losers. They're wasting their time drinking when they could be getting ahead with work.

Every time you deny yourself something, next time it will be easier. Every time you give in to vice, next time giving in will be easier as well.

Always set deadlines that are near-impossible to meet. (But don't get frustrated if you don't meet them) As soon as you know you will make a deadline, you become complacent.

Back to regular updates. Sorry everyone for lack of Bargue. I'm still working on managing my time to squeeze in as many hours of drawing a day as I can. Maybe once I completely cut myself off from society... Until then, a man can dream.

Also, if you haven't found him yet, visit Ryan Yee's Blog (http://)! Met him at IlluxCon. That dude is a baller.

Sorry that the colours looks like poo. I realized once I was done that the entire time I was doing my studies, my monitor was turned down to half way brightness. Super lame, but you can still guess that movie.

ryanoir: Yeah dude. More than anything, the bargues (as well as the cast drawing course) helped he draw a clear distinction between light and shadow, and then to see where reflected light, halftones and highlights go.

Verehin: You know it. Thanks for dropping by.

BlackDelphin: I would, but I would rather take something to finish if it's from life. Someday I'll do more plein air paintings. And someday I'll do some really polished still lives.

Ilex_Paul: Thanks dawg.

Mr.Pryminista: You guessed it! I'm gonna dedicate my next duel to you.

Bobby Chiu is right. It's all about how much information you're putting down with each stroke. The more cartoony your style is, the less information you have to think about. Since cartoons are a simplification of reality.

The more you "see" before you put the stroke down, the more efficiently you can paint, and your ability to "see" comes from studies.

Painting is a reflection of your thought process and as such it doesn't matter how many strokes you can put down in a minute. You can't make your brain think any faster.

Finally got back to life drawing today. Monsieur Bargue, I salute you for teaching me the way to draw. Learning fundamentals is like collecting a jigsaw puzzle, and I just got another piece. JENGA!!

Guess which ones are from imagination. If you guess right, I will draw you. For serial.

ryanoir: I'm taking cast drawing at the Grand Central Academy of Art in NYC. It's a pretty good school, apparently. The drawings above are from life. Much better than using ref.

lennon: Thanks dude.

If someone is being an asshole to you, you should be a bigger asshole to them, because that will make them feel better about it. It's really the kind thing to do.

Tried to do a long pose today, and was disappointed because the model kept moving. I don't know how they do it at the Academy. Overall, abour 30 mins. The model is actually the same dude from the David Kassan Ipad Demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5OLP4nbAVA4) . Apparently he's better at posing for portraits.

Untouched24: No film, all art. I'm shooting for a concept art job in Paris by next april. If that goes well, I will return to my film then.

mrd33ds: Hey thanks budday!

ryanoir: I agree, and that's actually what I've been doing. It helps a lot when it works, but it can get pretty hard. I didn't really nail down the drawing with that dude (and he was fat) so he looks out of proportion.

If people said things the way they were, there would be no humour. That's not only because we can very rarely (if ever) be honest with ourselves and other, but also because it's impossible to view things outside of your own bias. So the best you can hope for is staying as true to yourself as you can. Of course, how you define yourself changes every day, and there's no way your brain can actually formulate a wholesome definition of yourself (partially because it's not smart enough, partially because you're fickle and random).

There should really be a holiday where people only tell you the truth about you or about themselves, and you're not allowed to judge, criticize or get upset at them. Maybe I should make a short about it...

2 hr portrait + process + 20 min portrait + whole foods impression + duels. Preparing for my next class at the GC academy. Painted portrait sketch with Rick Piloco.

You getting hang of the digital rendering. Some really sweet cartoon'ish characters. Well I think you know, that constant anatomy drawing practice is essential, so my tip is that you should do some 15-min\30-min enviro and character speedpaints. It was quite helpful for me.

Anyway, wish you luck mate, keep drawing!

J@n!t: Hey bonus points for reading the text! It's always inspiring to hear my typing efforts were not in vain. I can't figure out why I haven't had more comments either. Maybe it's because I'm a jerk and never visit other people's sketchbooks. But at least all my posts are consolidated and you can watch my progress without refreshing the page. If you're into that sort of thing.

Seraph Fowkes: Thanks homie! I mostly do anatomy sketches in pencil, which I'm way too lazy to scan in. But you are right, I don't do enough.

So yeah I started updating with regularity but then girlfriend happened again. Anyway here are some leftovers for you. Mostly studies for duels. Movie stills are from Terry Jones' Barbarians documentary.

Jovian M: Yeah I wanna see that too, except to do that I need the knowledge. It might seem like I have the knowledge because I'm keeping them loose, but I don't. Your brain fills in all the missing links so that I don't have to. I can't take them very far without them starting to look like stinky poo.

ryanoir: Thanks man.

alternative: Refer to the ^, however I will be starting a portfolio piece that will make your eyes bleed with joy. Just for you.

Things have gone astray. All I have to say is that people who say money can't buy you happiness are missing the point.

All the words you hear, like values, edges, temperature etc take at least a month to learn to be aware of. Certain ones, (like form) take years. Mastery comes after a lifetime.

I'm staying at this kid (http://jsandart.blogspot.com/)'s house in Colorado for two weeks, and we're gonna paint ourselves to death. I will come out of this with a nice portfolio piece showing what I've learned over the last two months (if anything), and many many life studies.

These are my last Bargues because I let my lady borrow the book. Finally, here are the much coveted casts that I've been doing for the past two weeks. They're obviously not finished, just at the point where it would be easier to start a new one and apply all the knowledge. I've learned so much from them, and if I had another month perhaps I would actually learn form. But maybe I'll buy one of my own and study it to death instead.

I've got some life drawing too, but I'll post that later along with the awesome duels I'll be doing here. PEACE.

ryanoir: Merry christmas to you as well, homie! The 3rd one's values actually make it look very flat. The only reason it looks better is because I put in the reflected light. The last one has the best values, but they still don't make him look 3D because the transitions are wrong in a lot of places. I need to do at least one more (and something more simple) before I actually get it right.

I've been in an art rut recently, and just now seem to be getting out of it. This is today's duel. I'm gonna focus a lot more on lines and values for the next couple of duels, because those are the things that make a picture. Colour is sort of like icing, and a cheap way of making something read. Or, I guess, in really complicated scenes you need colour to tell things apart, but I'm not old enough to do big complicated paintings anyway.

Or am I? There's a new personal piece in the works, and it's gonna negate everything I've done up to this point.

Hey man, it's Connor from GCA. Cool stuff in here, keep it up dude! The dailyduels pieces look cool, you SHOULD try to render the hell out of one of those pieces. Just treat it like a cast drawing once you get it to a stage you're happy with. Fix up issues with the anatomy and solidity, find your shadow terminators, and then just crawl right out of the shadow on to the form (keeping in mind your light source ;)! I'm sure you could surprise yourself and do something really awesome out of your head, as long as you put some good time and effort into it.

Nickybeats: Thanks dawg! Trust me, I'm not pushing myself yet.

Ryanoir: You're right. Also, james gourney had a post with a bunch of master works in grayscale a long time ago. I've never even thought about making things read to the extent that they do. It's insane.

Connor: Good to see you, dude! It's actually amazing how much cats drawing helps with seeing form and values. I can't even imagine what I could have learned if I did it for another month. You better put that knowledge to good use yourself!

As Bobby Chiu (http://imaginism.deviantart.com/journal/37031419/) put it, it's very important to figure out a strategy for 2011. In my efforts to do so, I've been trying to figure out a lot of introspective questions. Sort of like the influence map on DA, but broader.

Chasing that perfect studio is like chasing a perfect girl - if she actually wants you start to wonder if perhaps you can do better. The drama of uncertainty is what keeps the pursuit going.

I'm getting close to the point where my art will need more than just foundation to be good. Things I've been working on recently:

Values:

Making things read
Form rendering

Drawing:

Double foreshortening
Twisting forms
Big shape relationships
Flow
Grasping the air

Continuing with these themes, here are some duels, and prep sketches for upcoming personal illustrations.

Ladies and gents, I decided to pursue my long-time high school dream. This is my last post until six weeks from now, at which point I will have hopefully achieved it. I'm gonna join the race for that most coveted of the gaming holy grails (http://www.myspace.com/holygrail) : concept art job at Blizzard. You can keep up with my progress on DailyDuels.com (http://dailyduels.com) as I will be pouring my heart and soul into every illustration, catering to the Blizzard aesthetic and, eventually, quality. The best of these will be submitted to their Fan Art Program, aiming to get posted for 5 weeks in a row. Basically, I'm going to paint until it wouldn't make sense for them not to hire me. Hopefully, six weeks will be enough for that.

Why six weeks? GDC (http://www.gdconf.com/) .

In the meantime, let me share some parting thoughts with you. Drawing, like any art, is just another magic trick. If the mind of the beholder cannot bridge the gap between his ability and the picture (or art work) he sees before him, he finds it impressive and amusing. The wider the gap is, the more impressed the viewer is (another obvious factor affecting the effect of the work is the viewer's prior experience with art works of the same kind). If the viewer has the ability to create a picture of comparable quality, he/she knows the secret to your magic trick, and no longer finds your work impressive.

The nature of drawing and painting makes us very susceptible to self-inflicted physical damage. Drawing requires a lot of focus in order to make something of merit. This kind of mental commitment often makes it difficult to be aware of your physical state, i.e. posture and possible pain you may experience. Since it requires a lot of time also, you may mess yourself up pretty bad without noticing it. Heed the warning, kids! Stop drawing while you still have the limbs.

Hey man, nice work, you're always pushing the pace. I think my favorite is the very last picture of that space suit concept, looks very good. It also seems to be a slight departure from your usual style.

I wish you good luck on your Blizzard pursuits, but why does that require you to stop posting on CA for the six weeks you work on pieces for them?

Anyway man, again, good luck, and keep at it.

Alexson: Thanks man! I'm gonna make it. I got the dream.

Untouched24: Thanks a lot, dude. Posting stuff on all my sketchbooks took too long out of my day. I needed to get like 10-12 hours of work done, plus food and hygiene.. I think I'm gonna go back to that schedule since it seemed to produce good results. Shit is gonna get intense.

I'm back from GDC now and my mind is still trying to straighten itself out. I feel a little empty from having the deadline for such a significant goal pass, and I dearly miss the three days I spent hanging out with professionals. They flew by so fast, and I can't help but feel like I didn't make the most out of the experience. That said, even though 6 weeks was not enough to accomplish my dream, GDC was the best place to spend my birthday week. The questions that have built up over the weeks finally got answered, I met tons of badasses and got a lot of feedback on my portfolio (which you will find below); and most importantly, I know exactly what I need to do to get to where I want to be.

In addition to the emptiness, I feel a lot more freedom. I'm free from the time pressure, and free from my ignorance of how the industry works.

I've been keeping a diary of the things I learned over the last 6 weeks, and I think once I actually accomplish my goal, I will post a very extensive "how to." In the meantime, I'm gonna regroup, clean my room, my body and mind and my "to do" list; and prepare for the next round.

The 6 weeks actually turned out to be quite different from what I expected. I spent the first two weeks on the spider piece below, and a piece that's not shown. The following 2 were spent entirely on duel concepts, and the best displayed. The fifth week was taken up largely by 3D, and I spent significantly less time on painting, and I spent all of the last week on my 3D. Ultimately, I only spent 2 weeks focused on solid drawing, so imagine what kind of progress could have been made if I dedicated the entire 6 weeks to it like I said I would. Anyway, enjoy!

Really cool paintings! Love to see more drawings. Your really going for the Blizzard style. Keep it up. Love your colors by the way too.
