I often get an idea for something throughout a day. Most of the time I forget about it. Now I think I'll be at least writing that idea down, or playing around with it on paper. Is this common for other artists? I'm kind of new to art, so I'm not used to getting around to expressing my ideas.

its isnt just common for artists - its common for humans. A rule of thumb for artists is to ALWAYS carry a small notebook around in your pocket for exactly that occasion.
Its a good habit to get into early - that way you will never let an idea slip away. And try to get as much down about that idea as you can. If its an idea for an image - draw from different angles, sizes, all sorts of variations, make notes. The more you get down on paper the more you will remember of the atmosphere of the idea which is important.

It isn't really common for me, because I'm usually in school most of the time. So I can draw my ideas whenever i want.

Yep. Always carry a small pocket sized sketchbook or something to draw/write on. Don't forget a pen.
