Spin around once.
Crack an egg into a bowl within a pentagram.
Light a candle on each point.
Hear the softly spoken magic spell.

...ahh just kidding. try slowly breaking from music, like get an ep about 13 minutes long, and start drawing, when the ep's done don't turn it back on, keep drawing. That might work, if all else fails try hypnotism.

For me, music can be bad and good. It's good if it can clear my mind of noises inside the house (telephone, TV), but it can be bad if I start thinking about the music instead.

Concentration is something I'm also having trouble with. Right now I'm trying to consciously think about what I'm drawing, and to catch myself if my mind starts to wonder off. It might be a slow process, but I'm hoping it will work.

I cant draw without music. It doesnt seem to distract me at all though. Actually it helps alot cause it gets my inspirational juices flowing. I dont think drawing while listening to music is a bad thing except if your doing 2d animation. If its distracting you...put some music on low in the background so that its not distractingly loud and its not pure silence.

I used to have that problem, but i'm pretty much over it, try turning on some misfits, claypool, appocolyptica, pink floyd....... y'know, get a WIDE variety of music going and see if your ideas or style change. i know my stuff changes. but i dont NEED music going.:evilbat:

Get the figure, sketch, and the general ideas when you have music playing. When working on a final piece this can be for so much as 80% of the time. The rest of the 20% of the time concentrate on the rendering and details of the piece.

This is mostly what I do, or I listen to faint music when rendering. I find it hard to get emotion into poses/sketches without music but have a hard time finishing things with music.

Also strangely enough I do better work when I'm distracted by some other work. Could be a teacher, could be noise in a library(high school library) or it could simply be typing on msn. In between talking I scribble and sketch some loose forms and slowly work my way up. That's another way I find I can draw without music. Then again I have no set method that I won't budge from now as I am still only an aspiring artist.

Good luck in future art. Keep in mind though that maybe music is your thing? Maybe you should find ways of always having music rather than finding ways of drawing without it?

LMAO.

I can't draw with music. It's like there's too much going on and I get overwhelmed with all the input. But I have a feeling I've got ADD so maybe that's it.

i actually read something awhile back about ADD and people with add generally like to listen to background music. ADD people tend to like to get stucked into things they love, but tend to get flustered with other tasks.

I kinda don't like a whole lot of music, and the music I do like is very dominating, i.e. really emotional pieces, or techno/trance. So anything I would listen to is larding its fat ass up and down, screaming "PAY ATTENTION TO MEEEEEEEEEEEEE."

What are some good ambient, background pieces? Maybe it's my selection that's the problem.

well you have 3 routes to go.

1) Movie scores, check out Http://www.soundtrackcollector.com

2) Ambient electronica, check out http://www.shoutcast.com/ and click find 'Ambient Chillout Psy', should be number 9 or around there.

3) Spacerock, Experimental Rock, Ambient Pop, and Trip-Hop, check http://www.allmusic.com

Thats pretty funny, I was just thinking about this the otherday. I am ADHD and I have found that if I listen to music while drawing my concentration goes up, and I have fewer urges to jump up and do something else. Funny, history class has the same effect... I would guess that I just need something to distract my overactive brain.

Sometimes I just cannot focus and need to shut it all off to really get any work done.

However, other times, the music really helps out and pushes me farther.

It just depends on the mood I guess.

Most of the time, nowadays, I'm going with no music.

I always have music playing, mind you I can only work in 15 minute sessions. Unfortunately most of my work looks like it was done in about 15 minutes.... having said that most of my client deadlines only allows me to work on a piece for 15 minutes.

With or without...music is just a state of mind, some kind of wavelength which pretend to comfort us. You can even hear songs in your head without actually playing it. Focus is important, focus without trying to focus is the ultimate. If you mind does not become one with your weapon of choice, matters not music or none. Um...(must stop BullShitting here. There is a voice in my head again.)

Dan>> 15 minutes for Clint! For real? Well, I would shit in my pants, but I am sure you always pull it off.

davi>> Why did you talk to Dan's wife? That's not cool man.

This might have something to do with brain hemispheres or something. I read somewhere that when you listen to music your right brain becomes active and according to Betty something or an other (she wrote "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain"), thats the side of the brain you use when you draw. So in if that were the case, you could try drawing with your left hand. Or draw very late at night or early in the morning when not fully awake.

If that doesn't work, it's time you go get yourself some portable music
