I know this has been asked a million times, (and if this is in the wrong forum please move!) but i'd really like a simple list to refer to when looking for reference materials.

I just recently bought some new art supplies, and re-newed my library card so i didn't have to necessarily buy reference books...but now im left with the problem of weeding the good from the bad. This is hopefully were you guys come in.

What im looking for:

- Figure drawing. So reference books like anatomy (i have one by Roger Peck) and models would be excellent...but id also like some resources that are out side the box. Fashion websites? online resources (preferably free ones) places one wouldnt normally look for references other then sitting at starbucks and drawing (though i know this is a good thing.) I used to have the PDF's to a really great artist that was recommended to me. (i cant remember his name at the moment.) and i really loved it, but i lost it in one of my computer reformats. :(

- Info on Color Theory and how to apply it. I'm looking for something basic and simple...not the scientific side of things. i want something easy to use and useable so i can learn to apply the knowledge into my art.

- I'd really love something on line work. how to improve lines, thickness, hatching, that kind of stuff... a simple basic explanation of the different pens and markers would be lovely as well!

Basically i want to jump start my creativity and practice with the basics, as well as tools that will take my art to the next level...but dont want to weed through tons and tons of useless stuff...and i know nothing is useless and i can potientially learn from everything.

but i dont want to spend hours reading and deciphering meanings because that will just throw my creative juices off.

I hope someone understands my needs and can help me! thanks! :D

This book can help with questions 2 and 3. http://www.dickblick.com/products/the-new-artists-manual/ There's an older version edited by Angela Gair that might be at your library.

There is a ton of info at the CGTalk Figurative Art forum:

Especially check out the reference sub-forum. They have a lot of links to free online resources.

This (http://www.itchstudios.com/psg/art_tut.htm) art tutorial is a nice read to get you started.

Eventually you'll do need to "weed through tons of useless stuff" because thats the only way you going to find something that you interested in. People can give you some links and books but eventually its up to you to decide whether it fits your needs or not.

Let me know if you find any good read on those subjects you've wrote in your post, i'm in the process of mastering the basics myself so it would help.

Best of luck!

Corel.
