Here's a sketch using the wacom, im really starting to get used to it... after a while it feels more natural. Also does anyone know what the best settings are for an Intuos2?

its probably a bit early to offer any specific crits - the most important thing is to keep doing what youre doing. Drawing as much as you can as often as you can. Thats the hard part, but eventually you'll get where you want to go.

good luck

Haven't posted anything in a while, ive been busy alot lately... but anyways here are my latest sketches, im starting to play around with the shadows and reflections, the top scetch being a new mini mixed with a horrible looking bodykit that went wrong lol, second a Skyline R34 and the last an S13 Silvia drift machine :D and a few more scetches under that.

I wasn't confident enough to add reflections and shadows on the body of the S13 so I left it as is until I get better....(ive lost too many good scetches trying to add more detail)

Sorry for the quality of the scetches... I had to use my digital camera coz my scanner doesn't want to work.

c&c welcome :chug:

A few sketches I did tonight, im starting to practice more because I really enjoy drawing/sketching stuff. The only problem I see is that my lack of understanding of the mechanics behind drawing such as anatomy, perspective, shading and all that stuff makes it hard for me to express my ideas on paper. But anyway im going forwards not backwards right?

use reference for drawing cars - particularly the wheels - until you get good at it. When drawing wheels in profile you seem to have a huge problem with using childhood symbols to draw them at the moment. This results in wheels which are about 2-3x too big and would be pushing through the car shell in quite a big way in real life. Remember that a wheel is a circle, and that if you only draw the bottom half of the circle, the top half does still exist.

Use reference photos!

Heres something I just did a few mins ago, im practicing some perspective (I never learnt any of that stuff), i'll be purchasing "Perspective Made Easy by Ernest Norling pretty soon because ive heard some good reviews about it... and hopefully I can learn something from it and learn to control my drawings and refine them.

Thanks for the tips sixBlade :chug: I will do more practice on the circles... and wheels :D

My drawings suck I know... thats why im trying to get better, as of last night I started to play around with basic shapes etc instead of starting the drawing without any basic structure etc. But anyway here are some sketches, you might recognise the house and the girl hanging on the tree. Guys I know my drawing are far from great but im still learning and trying to develop my skill, so if you have any comments/crits, good or bad it doesn't matter I wanna hear them im all ears :D

Apart from everything else I need to work on faces/heads because I have no clue how to draw them properly.

I coloured my sketch of the gasmask guy, it was a quick rushed job so nothing too flashy.

A few more sketches I just sketched... Im having a go at anatomy as you can see, the proportions are wrong.. but thats why they are called sketches :D

I went for a more realistic look with the shadows and stuff on the second one.

aaah. it seems loads of people have trouble drawing hands and feet, I've got a lot better at drawing hands, my feet ain't bad but I could improve in certain stances. Lip's and eyes-well you can get away with making these features really simplictic, it usually helps, what I did was to practice drawing my own features using a mirror, or even try drawing your own hands in different positions-that helps.

Sorry I couldn't be of much use... :)

I've just started a sketch book on here the other day, its a good way to keep me drawing everyday!

I really should be sleeping since I have classes tomorrow, but right now im trying to learn how to paint properly... this piece isnt finished..

I was just trying to learn how to correctly pick colours. I did cheat a little and used the eyedropper tool to see how accurately I picked the colour... stay tuned because I want to finish thise one :D

I would have tried to finish it tonight but its getting late so enjoy.

P.S.. how do you guys pick out the correct colours? Do you sometimes use the eyedropper to check if your selections are accurate?

Sub7th: Thanks :D

If I get comments I plan on replying with an update... I got that idea off one of the other members from here (sorry I forgot your nick :( )

Heres an update, this one took a really long time, probably like 3 hours or more (I didn't keep track of time) its not finished as you can see...

If anyone can help me with a photoshop problem that would be cool :D ok so I finish painting a piece and then I save it to jpeg.. when I open the jpeg the colour is a little lighter and saturated, but in ps its darker... why is this? Im guessing its my colour settings, but how can I change them to "true colour" ? Any suggestions appreciated.

In your color management preferences set your RGB to "Monitor RGB" or it may even have the make of your monitor listed, and you'll be able to see what the image will look like when displayed in other programs or online.

what the shit! Massive improvements all abound! You've improved greatly from the few posts up top! The Conan is awesome, especially his arm. A tip; try to learn proper perspective as soon as possible. It will help you greatly when you draw vehicles, and it should give you a little more energy when you draw environments. Try to find a good perspective book.

Hey Top'
Good progress.. I noticed a vast improvement when you used photo ref.. and the colours are really coming along too. I would however, spend some more time sketching, especially some structural elements, i think that a good grounding in object sketching will really help with issues like the wheels on your cars not actually touching the ground but the body work is.. I suggest wandering in to the garage and find an object, chain saw, mower, wrench etc, then begin to draw it, first sketch out the basic shapes, paying particular attention to 'hidden' or 'partially obscured' forms. try to envisage the shape continuing into the area you cant see it.. I'll check back at the weekend and if i have time i'll post an image or two explaining what i mean if its unclear?

Laters..

The saga continues, its been almost 2 years since my last update.. too many distractions in that period of time.. I found my old Intuos2 wacom tablet (its a serial port) in my cupboard, got it running after spending some time sorting the compatibility issues I ran into.

I am a little more mature and serious about art now, and have a drive to learn like never before so please give me some hints about anything related if you happen to see this thread!

I am going to start learning the anatomy, so there will be a bunch of study sketches using the tablet, most of it will most likely be very basic and crude until I start actually understanding the fundamentals. Please comment on the work as you see fit.

hey top! thx for having a look in my thread. :hatsoff:

ok, so since you are working on heads, i recommend downloading a copy of "drawing the head and hands" by andrew loomis; you can pick that up for free online. check out the "free e-books" link in my signature, there's tons of materials that you can find there. get a feel for the proportions of the head and placement of the features. first thing i'll say, the eyes are usually in the middle of the head, vertically speaking. in general, you draw your eyes too high (about 2/3rds up the head), so you need to bring them down in the head. i would start with the general shape of the head first, and THEN place the eyes. i would also start trying to draw anatomy as realistically as possible at first, and then feel free to experiment with less realistic, cartoony styles and such; that way, you can exaggerate what you are drawing with purpose. hope this helps; g'luck restarting the journey! :cheerleader:

TopSecret

Hey thanks purb36 thats exactly what I need! I see what you mean about the eyes being too high.. I need to learn proportion and anatomy a.s.a.p. as im rather uneducated in that department...

I seem to be able to draw side profiles of faces much easier and intuitively better than front on views, I have no idea why.

good work, good progress! just remember, the bottom of the jaw is normally NOT horizontal, but usually slopes downward. your proportions and everything are looking good, just keep your angles in mind. take care!

converting the front and side proportions for the head to 3d perspective is difficult, difficult in that you really have to develop a vision for it otherwise it doesnt glue together nicely, I need to keep practicing not only on the digital paper but actually visualising the 3d form after drawing the sphere.

Thanks for pointing that our purb I will keep that in mind when studying further.

These are some really crude eye studies, I really need to watch my lines as they can get messy very quickly.

Hey greetings :D

Thanks for visiting my sketchbook and welcome :)

Progress is slow but steady (hopefully)

Here is another small update, I think im figuring out the proportions for the skull and some basic idea of where the landmarks go, although to be honest I cant put it all together in 3D Space yet, its very difficult so I will have to keep practicing, checking reference and then bit by bit start constructing the pieces into the 3D space to get those nice perspectice views.

I really need to clean up my lines too as they are pretty messy and all over the place.

It's awesome to see that you're dedicated and sticking to it. For your studies I'd suggest you find some items that are cylindrical, sphere, cube and cone shaped and practice drawing those from life. Everything we observe can be broken down into those four shapes and if you can understand those forms it'll make it easier to internalize images that you use as references.
Keep up all the practices you are getting better.

Nice works.

Your lines tend to be clean and straight. You would probably do well with inks and technical drawings. :)

I don't have much advice on coloring because I am not that good myself.
But putting some object in front of me and trying my best to make the colors look right is a very good exercise. And you can't eyedrop from real-life (at least not easily) so it forces you to solve the problem for yourself.

hey top :d thought i'd have a little look at your work too ^^ I must say There was certainly a good steady improvement in your skill, but curiousity gets the better of me..why didnt you update for almost a year? The natalie portman study is really good, keep pushing out more colours with that and remember yo keep your pallette large.

Are you still doing loomis studies? :-) keep updating and yknow what? we should try and advance at the same pace...sorta like push each other on. A PACT if you will.

where do you want drawing to take you anyway? :3

Keep up the studies! I particularly love the eyes! Get some book like that from Burne Hogarth (search it on scribd in google). There are brilliant sketches which I tried to redraw with much accuracy! Free your imagination and get some inspiration!
