first time poster! yay!

I'm in college for Industrial Design. A lot of my designs are excessively creative and not practical. I don't know how to fix this... maybe I should just run with it. I'm thinking about shifting gears into concept art.

what I'm wondering is, for those of you familiar with ID, is how your focus changed. What was removed and replaced in your portfolios, or is it even necessary to reorganize my work? do I just say "let me make video game art, here, look at my toothbrushes"? What are the specific things companies look for in their concept artists? I've never really made a solid attempt at concept art. I design products and I write a little science fiction. If I am looking for a concept art job, What am I missing?

Some companies require more skill sets from their concept artists, some less - but a good read for you is this link from Blizzard's site:

I'm not sure that the opposite of practical is creative. I don't think both are mutually exclusive. Maybe you just need to try harder.
