Meh, the lips are messed up, the ear is messed up... meh, that's what I get for only spending 5 minutes. But I do have to get to work, so I have an excuse.

He's more antiquated than retro; I guess it falls under classic.

Pen & ink imported into painter.
The inspiration for this was the old socialist propaganda posters and union protests around the turn of the last century.

Moops -Sorry. I actually did the whole thing before adding the hat. The costume on your's is definitely more true to the period.
Oregano - Great work, great inspiration too.
Justorama -Welcome!
Hunger -As always, your posts are something to look forward to.

retro/classic is refering to the style of design given to older superheros(ie: fantastic four, rocketeer, batman)

pretty good stuff so far.
sabre: like the dynamic pose
hungerartist: as always. nice!!
oregano: nice! i dig the lines.
moops: strikes me more as a villain than a superhero, but i do like it. i think there's a few perspective problems with the face though.
mgh: you nailed it dude!
illcap: again, he kinda strikes me more as an oldskool villain type. i could see him battling our hero in an airship, anyway.
all the best.

These have been some awesome topics the last couple of days! I really wish I could participate but I'm out of town and away from all my equipment and programs. You guys have been doing awesome work, its great to see the quality improving in everyone's work. When I read this topic I was thinking more like Stan Lee/ Jack Kirby work. Its still good work though!

Ah, man. Grab a restaurant napkin and a ball point pen! Commandere someone's scanner!
I can relate. We're taking off to California for three weeks in January (I'm taking my computer with me DAMBIT!) and I'm not sure if I will have internet access at my wife's parent's house...

So, since "Retro/Classic" was refering to a style and not an era, should I redraw Captain Industry?
Hmmm... Perhaps another hero...
:flower: power, me-ahn.

"The first super-powered, costumed crime fighter in comics was not Superman. It was Mandrake the Magician. Wearing a stage magician's black silk, Mandrake used his powers against evil four years before the Man of Steel. And although his early magical powers were toned down later, being able to make people believe anything, simply by gesturing hypnotically, is still a marvelous and very useful ability."

Here is my basis for today's dsg:
http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/Ragnarok27/Cb121.jpeg
I saw this and thought it was perfect for today, heh heh its soooo campy. I am learning a lot right now from references.
I focused on repainting this cool cover from 1939 using the existing lineart I extracted from the sample.
Aaaaannnnd boom here it is-
http://img3.photobucket.com/albums/v13/Ragnarok27/dsg-dec-22.jpg
Let me just re-iterate, all I did was the painting part the original line art belongs to Lee Falk, Mandrakes creator.

here's a BW. im gonna try to color it, but I'm not sure if I have time tonight.
http://www.bradkurz.com/mercuryBW.jpg
it's mercury. he gets his powers from mercury's staff, which he found in a dormant volcano in Greece.
I just made that crap up cuz it sounds corny. retro superheros were very corny.

I had lots of fun with this one. I did two graphite sketches, but I only had time to clean one up. The first is inspired by a friend of mine. The second is a concept stolen from the author of a popular children's series by the same name - but with my own spin.

S51: Funny. Reminds me of Shaft.
MGH: Actually, I thought of Flash Gordan first when I saw yours.
Mike: Too funny. I especially like the Bowling Ball.
bkmini: ...there are no words.
I'm loving everyone's takes on retro.

This is me being cheap for now and recoloring an old image, but today was Mega-Chirstmas-shopping Day so I just got home. I have a more retro idea in mind that I hope I can scan in time.

uh. It's Renaissance man, "Keeping the world in perspective". Da Vinci is my hero. Tried to keep the shading all smooth like his/michealanglo's/the other classics.
I just noticed his wrist is horribly mis aligned.
wtf.
Hey hunger artist, i would suggest checking out David Mack. He is currently illustrating Daredevil. I think you would like his work.

Holy bat-cakes! My hand feels like what superman's crotch must feel like after being hit by a kryptonite boulder.
Wystro- lol, I was waiting for someone to use that "old comic book print" look. :D
Y'all are on a roll today! :chug:

How did you produce that ink dot effect, wystro?
SicFrost
December 23rd, 2003, 02:23 PM
@ shlo-mo, thats not hard at all i think he made it a brush in PS then just put it on a deifferent layer and set it to difference...thats what i would have done

Wystro
December 23rd, 2003, 03:05 PM
I produced the effect on Photoshop. I had a seperate layer for the line and a lower one for the color. I then targeted the color layer and went to Filter/Pixilate/color halftone.
From that point, it's just a matter of choosing the dot size. The only change that I made was that since I wasn't happy with the dotty blue, I went back and painted the blue points solid again.
I also let the colors bleed a little so that it had a cheap-print look. Give it a try -- its a fun and easy effect. I think I may print out a few Christmas cards with it.
