ROUND #157 :: The ENDLESS

DESCRIPTION

The Endless

Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Despair, Desire and Delirium

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Endless

The Endless are brothers and sisters created by the British writer Neil Gaiman (with the exception of Destiny – Marv Wolfman and Bernie Wrightson) for the DC/Vertigo Comics series ‘Sandman’ (Dream). Each one is a personification of a natural force and has very distinctive characteristics.

Destiny: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destiny_(DC_Comics))

Death: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_(DC_Comics))

Dream: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dream_(comics))

Destruction: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Destruction_(DC_Comics))

Despair: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Despair_(DC_Comics))

Desire: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desire_(DC_Comics))

Delirium: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Delirium_(DC_Comics))

DC/Vertigo: http://www.dccomics.com/vertigo/

Your job, should you choose to accept it, is to design one of The Endless, or if you are feeling industrious as many as you like, but that is up to you, there is no bonus for producing more than one. Avoid designing them as previously presented in the comic, stick to gender, although bear in mind each one has very individual motifs and sigils (example, Death’s Ankh, or Desire’s Heart) and provide your own interpretation.

And please follow the submission rules. Thank you.

Weee! I think I wanna do Delirium.... :D

When you say avoid doing them as in the comic, is some things that's presented there still allowed to bring in a painting? *cough* fish balloon *cough* :P

She is pretty... er... picking things here and there, but can I still mismatch clothes and such? And can I keep the half shaven/half long hair, or is that too much of the comic character? Or do I have to revamp it alltogether?

If I was gonna do Destiny, I guess brown robes are out as well? Or?

Thanks for answers. :D

Sorknes - I guess what we're looking for is not who can paint Death as a Goth the best, or Dream as a spooky lanky Robert Smith lookalike. The characters have very distinguishing elements that can be reinterpreted. If you desperately want to present Delirium, for example as she is in the comic, then that's up to you. But this is a design challenge so exercise those imaginations and see how they could be pushed in a different direction. And a Fish Balloon is fine! :)

I always had a crush on Death (!) as she is, so the challenge is going to be a big one for me! :)

Ah, I think I get what you're saying :D

You guys don't want lets say 20 Deliriums that look the same, and the one with the best painting skill wins, right? :P So I can keep some elements and then do my own twist/thing with them then. If I got it right. Heh. :D

Definitly a fish balloon then :P

If I can cut on sleep time, I'm going for Despair, the most underrated Endless :)

never read the comics. but this sounds fun.

did a quick sketch of death. i think of the concept of death as very bird-like and strangely elegant. that's why i'm going with a bird-like representation.
will probably rethink the anhk sword...

then i thought that perhaps it would be interesting to incorporate the shape of the ankh to her silhouette/design... probably be messing around with that idea.

Initial sketch. I'm not sure if it's different enough. I was thinking about maybe putting a tutu on top of it. And some random loose threads and fabric here and there. Ho hum.

Or maybe I have to start anew from another direction.

Hm, interesting topic :D

Im planning to do 2 or perhaps 3, starting with Despair.

Gonna go for a Greek god/goddess theme for this CHOW, mostly statuesque figures. Shes kinda got a Dr. Manhattan thing going right now, but i think it may just be the blue and way I did the eyes

For the mirrors, I'm having them as giant glass facets to givethat other worldly sense to her realm.Sticking with the rats as well, most likely going to add more, but not so much that it becomes Willard :P

I'm not into comics but I was instantly drawn to the "death" character because of the ankh symbol, I absolutely love the egyptian culture so I went with that one.

This version of "death" is someone who is there when you die and when you're born so I wanted to put a subtle duality in her outfit. The right side of the picture is the covered and untouched side that signifies the innocence of when we're born.

The tattoo'd half of her is the side that signifies her taking people into the after-life to continue on...like a tattoo!

Some quick thoughts:

KleeWyck – Probably a good thing you’ve not read the comics, you won’t be influenced then! Love the ides of Death being bird-like, interesting interpretation. Perhaps, if you can, stretch the composition out a bit, the feet are very close to the bottom.

Sorknes – Like you I’m struggling to get completely away from the original idea of our chosen character. It’s difficult when you like the original vision so much. However, if that’s the direction you want, go with it. Perhaps experiment with her outfits a bit more. Delirium is a bit off the rails, she could go totally Punk or maybe she doesn’t wash and is like a little ragamuffin, not caring about her appearance.

~baxter – Great face and pose. There’s a bit of an art deco feel with the overlapping shades behind. Looking forward to colour.

Darknight – Destiny looking almost swamped by his throne is working really well. I enjoy Yoshitaka Amano’s Sandman too, very delicate drawings. If I had a suggestion with yours is watch the knees and legs, they almost look separate to the character right now.

Amber Alexander – Congrats on going for the ‘duality’ element of Death, emphasising life as well. As with KleeWyck, pull out the composition a bit more, as chopping off elements like the wings is confusing.

I think Death might go Emo! :) I'm forever blowing bubbles! I might try and incorporate the crux ansata differently, maybe as a cosmetic item in some way.

I'm going to have a go at two or three, probably Death, Delirium and Desire.

Edit01: Death, Delirium and Desire. This time Delirium is more Emo! So there! :P Not sure whether to put Barnabus in or not.

Edit02: A bit of colour on Death. Not black and white!

Sorknes
May 4th, 2009, 06:09 AM
Yeah, I'm trying to start anew. I was thinking about what I first assoscoiated with "delirium" if you just saying it out loud, and two things came into my mind. The bohemians drinking absinthe - but the effects of that were exaggerated, and homestaying housewifes from a few decades ago chewing pills like candy and drinking in secret. I might go for a housewife of some sort...

AARGH how this CHOW tempts me, being a huuge Gaiman and Sandman fan! I haven't read this series in years, but this is an excuse to pull the books out and pour over them all over again.

I have absolutely no time to do this, but I might be able to return to my practice of lunchtime doodles which are always good fun and practice for character brainstorming.

I am curious if a re-imagining similar to what Amano did by presenting a Japanese Dream in Sandman: Dream Hunters would be acceptable? I'm thinking of perhaps depicting the characters as they would be seen by other cultures, kind of like how the different characters in the comic saw Dream as represented to them by a familiar face. IE. For Bast, he appears as another regal Egyptian Cat, or like how Dream appeared as a handsome tribal with stars in his eyes to his African lover.

So many cool concepts to play with! I have a feeling my lunchtimes are going to run long.:batgirl:

not sure how original of a take this is on the character, but it's been a long time since I read Sandman so I'm fairly confident I'm not recreating anything. I think. I hope.

Anyway, playing around with a sketch of Dream.

In the Wikipedia it stands like this:
"Morpheus usually appears as a tall, thin man with bone-white skin, black hair, and two distant stars looking out from the shadows where his eyes should be." So, what do you mean by not designing him as in the comics? I mean if he has black hair, and he is thin and tall, then it's already too close?

I say this because I feel that designing Death as an Emo girl instead of a Goth one is not big of a change. Or for example Arthur 'Two Sheds' 's interpretation has stars in the eyes, is that also too much like the comic? So, did you mean changing the original design that much only, and not changing Death for example to an old woman or something? Sorry for the stupid questions, but I would really like to understand what you mean in the description, and still can't seem to grasp it.

Not to be disagreeable, but did you read the entire thing on Dream? His appearance changes between whom is seeing him: Bast sees him as a triple headed cat (I believe that's correct), in Japan - He's a monk, to a fox spirit - He's a fox, to African Americans he's black. I assume that he stays male throughout the whole transformation and it did mention that he kept his 'star' eyes throughout each of the transformations. So what Dream would look like depends on where the hell Dream is.

While I do agree with you that the change from GOTH to EMO is rather unoriginal (Sorry, sorry I'm a newb and I don't have any respect for elders on forums, I know), the character design looks somewhat different to me. EMO from what I've see around my college town includes bright and beautiful colors with patterns that blind the retinas, which meh, is something quite different from the average goth. So if she goes that route it would be a very different picture

What I believe the 'be original' aspect is to take things like their sigils (DREAM'S is the Skull and the spine of an enemy God to wear as armor I believe is what Wiki said) and a basic understanding of what each stands for and run off with it. For me, I'm sketching (but probably not going to submit because I can't stand in the running due to lack of skill and lack of time with exams) dream in his battle armor and I had intended on throwing some mirrors around him to put emphasis on the difference of his appearance (Hopefully I didn't give my idea awayyyy!). But the main part of my character would be the basic 'black hair, thin, eyes like stars.' Does that make me unoriginal because I'm using a the basic things to build off of? No.

:/

Change their appearance is kind of what we're getting at. Sure give him a white face and black hair, but he's depicted very specifically in the comic books as a tall lanky Goth, pretty much. Probably harking back to Gaiman's influences. Interpret them as you will, what we don't want to see is a reproduction of them as they appear in the comic, because it just becomes an exercise in fan-art, and we are saying you can essentially do what you want here. All the info you need is in the brief, it is as usual up to you what to do with that. If someone says redesign classic comic book characters surely that's an amazing opportunity!

Personally I'm just exploring ideas right now. Doing Death as Emo is kind of meant to be light-hearted, as Emo seems to be modern Goth in many ways., and Death as a character is a perky Goth in the comic! I imagined Death as always keeping up with current fashion trends! :)

Well, hello everyone!

I've been lurking here for some time and admiring all your awesome work. Thought I might finally chime in, maybe this way I can bring myself to finish something as I have already tried my hands a few times at a CHOW but never actually finished nor posted anything. Feels kinda relieving and intimidating at the same time to be here.

So, here's my concept sketch. I imagined Death as a little girl and worked the classic Reaper into it. Not sure yet what facial expression I should give her. Tried a kinda sad face at first which is still faintly visible but I didn't really like it. Have to rework the shadow at the wall/floor intersection, that looks iffy but apart from that I'm pretty happy, so I'm gonna start coloring and detailing soon.

What do you think about it?

Okay, so thanks Posh and DragonicFlames, I think I understand now, it's just so hard to go away from the original stuff, because I'm too influenced by the comics, and I think I'm not the only one. So this is what I have with Dream, the first version I've tried had a pale skin, but that was a bit too close and then thought, why not make it pitchblack. And have a robe with stars on and a glowing belt. The sperm in his hand will be the mask later. :)

Posh: Great topic! I could see this being the kind of thing that Neil would drop in on and maybe even post a link to from his blog. Would that be a good thing or a bad thing? (I was thinking of sending in the link via his feedback page, but thought I'd check first.)

---

The story that I most hope to hear someday of the Endless is what happened to turn Delight into Delirium. It's rumored to relate to her wedding that almost happened. So I've chosen to do Delight sitting for her wedding portrait, perhaps aware of what's coming but refusing to acknowledge it yet. The dress is based on a Thai wedding dress. If time, I'll also include Destruction since the two of them are close. I'm also going for a style I don't normally try. Anyway, here's the linework.

SO in. :teeth:
Some very cool things so far...

Hungryman - I like the brushstrokes and exploration you are going for, but I'm not getting a ton of character from him yet. Maybe think more on how much you can sell the "dream" concept visually instead of just calling him Dream...? Don't be afraid to be outlandish.

KayOnim - this is a neat spin, making her a child... I do think some ref will help you get child anatomy solved here, and the shadow is curving against the edge where the sidewalk meets the wall while rather than making a sharp turn for such a sharp edge. I also think you should put more of the death character on the girl than the shadow - it implies she is leading a double life or has a dual purpose of some kind, where as in the comics she is always death personified.

brewin - the first thing that jumps out at me is that the anatomy makes this character look female (the sort of breast area bulge and tiny waist) and from what I gather Destiny is always male and the brief says to stick to genders. If you want to bend some, try Desire, he/she flip flops genders. The other thing is that the faces/heads seem to be small, and the arms rather long - exaggeration of anatomy works sometimes, but I think a ref will help you solve this in a more believable manner. Otherwise, keep plugging away, and see if you can push yourself even more as far as the design goes.

fersteger - I love the characterization already, and the color I feel is very appropriate. To really sell who she is I might include a few more things that allude to her character in the comics (maybe her dog? or the sun dial?), also I think the nudity is cool since you made her look older overall. I can't want to see how this turns out, I hope you retain some of the loose manic quality as it gets rendered (maybe even make it more so)...

dream sear - I like the idea of klimt as an inspiration (it could be very cool in the rendering to pull in his colors and shapes) but I think some anatomy reference will help you out a bunch - the arm on the left is very small and scrawny for the rest of the figure, and the hand is looking a little more like a claw, the right hand also feels awkward. Also, Desire strikes me as something of a ruthless character, I think you can push more character and personality out of his expression/demeanor/design. A very good beginning.

Ghostbrush - I really like this sketch, it is very inventive in terms of the design. I do wonder if you can get more of Delerium's manic nature into this - she looks so calm, almost static, right now. I notice a couple anatomy things too, like the face being a little squashed down toward the chin and one foot (the one behind)seems very much longer than the other - some exaggeration works but because this is the only thing on her that is distorted, and it doesn't seem to relate any kind of narrative about her character, it kind of sticks out. Maybe consider distortions that would make her seem crazy, or try to keep the proportions more even.

Mara644 - I like the symbolism you have included, I could guess it was Delirium without too much effort, but I think your figure looks kinda placid at the moment. The things around her speak volumes, but I would like to see more of the character in her. The smile also seems really confident and smug, where as from the wiki description, she is scatterbrained, constantly changing, and really very unsettled. Try to get more of that character in your character.

Mercuralis - I like this sketch alot, good motion and flow... something about the raised arm seems awkward, tho, maybe the upper arm is looking short? Maybe check the anatomy on that. He's looking alot like the comic description right now, tho, and since he can appear as almost anything, I wonder if you can push the costume or character design a little more, beyond what is already there.

AvisNocturna - I like the ambiguity of sex the character has, which is appropriate, and you have an interesting illustration coming together, though the rendering is kind of mushy - try to work in some edge contrast in areas, and your values are all pretty close, see about giving the lighting more focus so you can better show forms and direct the eye to a center of focus in your piece. The arm in the back seems very strangely short, about 1/2 as long as the other one... based on the pose you have, why isn't the wrist resting on the bent knee?

Arthur Two Sheds - WOW. That is awesome. Careful of your anatomy, tho, the hand in the back has a very odd angle to it, and the legs feel so static compared to the torso pose. I did a haxxorz paintover to show you what I mean... keep it dynamic as possible. And keep going, really push the dream elements...

663136

Poshspice - lovely sketch (and lovely girls) as always... and I love the death bubbles. I wonder if emo is kinda close to goth, still, tho (but that all depends on how much you want to break away from the actual book versions, too)... I love it anyway, I want to see more. :)

--Gotta get back to work, more later, plus some sketches--

Lot of sweet ideas going around!

Mercuralis: I really like the composition so far, cant wait to see some color slapped on that :D
dirkvandulmen: I like the overall design, particularly the crescent beard in the far right ones.
Arthur Two Sheds: Very interesting take, looking forward to more/other characters :D

A few wips. Torn on color here, whether to stick to the blue or go with a more natural pale for Despair. Also got a little jump start on Destruction. probably going to add a sheathed sword on the side so i don't leave the sigil out.

Edit: Continued with Destro. Straightened him out a bit. Going with a astral like environment, but more fiery with embers and whatnot.

Darknight – Destiny looking almost swamped by his throne is working really well. I enjoy Yoshitaka Amano’s Sandman too, very delicate drawings. If I had a suggestion with yours is watch the knees and legs, they almost look separate to the character right now.

Poshspice:Yeah I was just scribbling a bunch and I came up with it randomly, Im trying
to be more loose. I'll work on making the legs work better, probably a lighting issue. Yours is looking "awsome" as usual.;)

Baxter: I realy like destruction alot. my vote on despair is go blue, or maybe:).

Gostbrush: wow I like the tatoos and the wild costume, what are you going to do with the bg?

dirkvandulmen: The one on the bottom right is my choice.

scottmcd: Im looking foward to the color,

hungryan: I was really debating for a while of dream and destiny, nice choice, looking foward to watching your image evolve.

KayOnim: that is definatly not how I imagined death to be, but I hope its true:).

brewin: I dont know which one I like better its a tough choice, I like the way the one on the left looks but I prefer what the one on the right is doing.

fersteger: I'm still bumbed out you weren't able to finish your joan of arc, that would of had my vote for sure. look'n good so far on the delerium.

hungryan: i love your exploration in concepts. i really like the idea of his robes having stars.

~baxter: i love the greek idea. as for color, i'm leaning towards the blue. she looks more like a greek statue. and i kinda like that. destruction looks a little off-balance. but great idea nonetheless.

As a huge Neil Gaiman and Sandman fan, I think I'm obligated to jump in on this one.

For those who are confused about the "not-like-the-comics" point, I think the important thing here is just keeping the specific traits (we never, ever see Destiny's face; Death always has that little spiral under her eye, Dream's eyes are usually drawn as stars or otherwise kind of strange, Delirium has two different colored eyes and really crazy hair, etc) and then playing with everything else.

Now. Off to finish my last final and then I can start on this one.... :D

ahoy,

having a crack at Destruction, haven't read comic so please excuse any way off interpretations. I see him as an immortal that lived through the ages, he may have retired but now finds himself drawn to the bikie gang life style (big beard = bikie) where he still sees a little destruction and chaos. He's donning his favorite breast plate and sword... might add talking dog and motorbike.

~baxter - Thanks man. Loving your hoplite Destruction design.

daestwen - Cool sketch! Nice lines and the facial expression is great.

Ghostbrush - Thanks dude. Yours is looking cool too. Coming along nicely. Don't really have anything else to add other than what Jessibean already said. Keep going!

AvisNocturna - Thanks! I like the pose of your character. Very fitting. The face is nice too. Looking forward to seeing it rendered further.

Mara644 - Hahaha.. Thank you. Don't start again. Thats a nice sketch! Just watch the position of the feet. Her right leg looks like it should be the weight baring leg, but at the moment it looks like its a little too far forward, almost like she should be tipping backwards. I dunno maybe its just me. Keep it up :).

RichLyons - Damn you Rich. Looks awesome.

JessiBean - Oh wow... Thank you so much. That's really generous of you. You're right that looks so much better. Believe it or not, the initial pose was referenced from a photo - I deliberately went for a weird, unusual pose to challenge myself a bit... Might have been good for a study, but at the end of the day, I guess it looked a little awkward as a character piece. Thanks again. I love it. I'll definitely be taking that on board :)

To be honest, I haven't even heard of Sandman before this (sorry for my limited knowledge of American comic books...I'm more on the Japanese side). So all I know about the Endless is whatever i can find online (mostly wiki). I pick desire because his/her "gender issue"...so to speak. At first I thought about draw him as a somewhat feminine male. But the problem is, he'll probably end up like some gay guy or drag queen (nothing against these people, it's just not what I want for Desire)...so eventually, I went to the other side, draw him/her as a female with some masculine feature. I still want him to be hot, but very aggressive, very dominate and sexy.

So here're 2 sketches I did, I think I'll go with #2, not only the composition is stronger, but the pose is much more nature.

This is a nice topic. Good works so far!

I'm choosing the death character...
I didn't take an original aproach, i want to make her a more casual woman...sort to blend between the rest of the humans.
This first sketch is perhaps a bit to much fashion...maybe i need to take a more street look...will see.

Not to sure about the size of the head.

I thought we didn't have to worry about their original interpretation? I mean, the sex of the embodiment of something like death or destiny seems irrelevant. <_<

Or were we supposed to take their descriptions in the wikis, and build an illustration off of them? (in which their sex is clearly mentioned, along with other specifics)

Just want to clarify this before I start. :3

Just want to clarify this before I start. :3

While the Endless can appear as just about anything, they do have distinct personalities, and as such have a sort of "favorite" form-- at least, it's the form that we see them most often in.

Like I said above, each Endless has specific characteristics that show up, even when they change forms. I'll use Dream as an example since we see him in the most forms in the comic. His most common form is as a tall, gangly guy with white skin and messy black hair, who wears dark robes that usually have some kind of flame motif on them (or just black in general.) However, we also see him as a cat (Dream of a Thousand Cats), as a sort of void of darkness (when talking to the last Martian), and a couple other forms, but regardless of form the predominant color is blue-black and he usually has 'star' eyes or a little flash of light in one. When he does show up as a black guy when talking with Nada, he still keeps the flame-edged robes. See? The form changes, but there's always some little trait that tells you it's still Dream.

Gender is one of those important traits. Each of the Endless (except Desire) have a gender that they stick to generally all the time. Some of the other traits can get left out... but if you switch genders then you're not really designing the Endless characters, you're designing your own embodiment of the idea. Since the prompt is to work with these specific characters, I'd say take what you can off the wiki and go from there.

scottmcd
May 5th, 2009, 10:04 AM
MichaelNoel: Re-read the brief. Particularly the phrase that says "stick to gender." If you were designing a character from scratch I'd agree, but these are established characters.

Jessibean: thanks for the crit. I was feeling like the whole sketch was off, though so I rethumbnailed it till I found something I liked better. Now I feel like his lower arm is a little stiff, but it's getting there.

Dream, I think, is possibly the hardest of the Endless to reimagine, just because he HAS been shown so many ways. It's difficult to see a guy with black hair, pale skin, and black eyes without thinking "MORPHEUS!" Short of making him an animal incarnation, it's going to be hard to get past that. I like the idea of him changing his clothing to suit the times, though. And I've had this idea for his hair being this seething mass that is almost tree like or cloudlike, with dreams hanging from it or falling from it... so I'm playing with that concept a bit.

I never read Sandman, so I basically have no clue outside the information I got from my research. But my impression is that Destruction is a good natured guy who doesn't want to govern Destruction, but rather create. So I decided to picture him as such; with a feather pen and a scroll in his hand, while his shadow pictures him holding a sword, as his true origin can not be that easilly surpressed.

Is my interpretation true enough to the original?

Diggin the new entries!

Rich Lyons: Pretty sweet! I wanna grab his beard.
feifeicreate: Id go with the right as well, the composition is more interesting than the first. Reminds me a bit of Sheri Moon Zombie.
Heliux: Id say it reads way more destiny than the death character. Its got the feel of the traditional grim reaper death, but that's far a different concept than Gaiman's Death, so Id say its in the clear.
daestwen: Lookin good so far, really got the androgyny down.
fersteger: Screams Delerium, loving it
dream sear: Coming along nicely! Can't wait to see more.

Another little wip. Been blazing through these, and I gotta say Im enjoying the juggling act a bit. If i get tired of workin on one but still feel like workin I can just hop to the other.:D

I got a little jump start on the third, Destiny. Going for the elder god father timey look. Hes a bit lost in the robes right now, but I'm probably gonna shrink it down a bit to get his outline in view.

Also at another color crossroads with Destruction. The warm one has a nice unified palette, but something draws me to the cooler one as well.

Ok I chose to do Destiny. Some of you hardcore fans might not approve of the design since it doesn't seem to stick that close to the original, but I'm trying to avoid trite ideas.

I've just finished up the design stage, here are a few thumbnails that I played with before taking what I liked from each thumb and merging them into one design, at the bottom of the image. Next I gotta start from scratch and work in color and some finer rendering, so let me know what you think, if there's any way I might be able to improve the overall design before moving on to the finished character.

~baxter Love your Destruction. That just works really well. Love the lions head belt, the pose... all of it. Would love to see you concentrate on this one, but Destiny has some interesting bits to him so far, as well. With Destruction... I'm in favor of the cooler palette. Pops a little more against it.

AvisNocturna You have come such a long way from when I first started watching your deviantArt gallery. :) I really like this. I feel like the circle in the background could be a little more centered (maybe add some space to the canvas on the left hand side?) Right now that right hand side is looking sort of purposeless. Watch the length of the nose, too. Right now it's a tish short.

Dream_Sear Love your desire so far. The hands and arms are beautiful, but a little obviously masculine. Maybe taper the fingertips or give longer nails or something to up the androgyny?

Okay, so... Update for the night, made a few changes as recommended by dream_sear. Still not sure what's happening with that back hand. Original idea was for him to be letting sand trickle from his fingers, but it looks like he's holding a bit of dog crap at the moment. Will work on that. Also feel like his crotch may be too low/legs too short? Anyone else see that or is it just me? I know his head is sort of traditional, but I'm trying to push the rest of him away from that, but keep many of the same motifs: the flames on the clothing for example... and use some of the other elements to pay homage to the story.

I might not get to finish this, due to end-of-the-semester-workload, but I really wanted to try my hand at Destiny.

I wanted to play with the idea of the book as a burden, as well as the idea of 'the hands of destiny' being altered by contact with the book. I tried to keep some of the details, such as Destiny leaving no footprints (I love that), and I really wanted to draw his hedge-maze garden.

Toying with making the book a little bigger, but this is the rough version so far. Hope the snow looks decent!

Sooo... I was tinkering with this for Desire, but eventually felt that I was rushing it to completion (when I still have time to make it nicer), so I think I'm going to scrap it and revert back to stage 1. I had to draw something up for this one. I changed majors after reading Sandman, yeah, that's right. Life changing shit. I enjoy the idea that the endless change in appearance based on who's viewing them. I tried to keep this in mind as I started brainstorming but these characters are so etched in my memory. I had a hard time not sketching a cutey Death or a wild haired, pensive Morpheus. And the huge Frank Quitely Sandman poster above my dresser was not helping.

I decided to draw them as I would see them. I chose to revisit Despair. I drew inspiration from an article I read maybe four years ago about Pro-Ano (Pro-anorexic) websites/forums. At the time, I couldn't believe that something like it existed. I visited one and it was really disturbing. It's mostly young teenage girls (boys too though) supporting each other not to eat. There is post after post of utter self loathing and many discuss cutting themselves. It gives me the shivers just thinking about it.

My Despair is similar to the original in that she is naked. She is followed by pigeons rather than rats. It would not be wise to call them friends. She feeds them continually and never stops to feed herself. As she wastes away, they grow larger and heavier and more aggressive as time passes. They dig into skin when they use her as a perch and tear at her skin when they fight each other for seed.

http://i106.photobucket.com/albums/m246/uglygrapher/jgo_despair.jpg

This is the WIP and hopefully I will finish. I need to pull out an anatomy book with a skeleton in it, and fix any of the issues. I would gladly take any help from you guys. I may draw one of the other characters too, because honestly, I bummed myself out with this one. Maybe a very merry, colorful Delirum.

Uglyographer: It's pretty gruesome, but otherwise I like it. I think there's something weird going on with the legs, the placement and shape of the knees.
Feifeicreate: Somehow on the linedrawing it looked better, I think the perspective is just a little bit off? Maybe it's the floor itself that makes it look just a little bit off for me. And he/she looks too much like a girl, so there's nothing of the double gender thing in this, which might be a problem. But it comes along pretty well.
Nightblue: It has nice colors, and delicate style. Isn't cutting the picture somewhere right at the ankle a bad idea? Also the lowe hand and arm might be a bit strange.
MJ Alcazar: You've also cut the picture at the ankle, same as above. :) And the design seems to be very close to the original, you could try to put something crazy in it maybe.
Majenkus: I like that it's an original thought about the character. The jacket looke almost like it's rendered with 3D. Maybe you could make it a bit less like that, more painterly? I like this picture pretty much, and not caring about the 3/4 rule even helps it. :)
MichaelNoel: Really nice stuff, but why her/his knee and fingers just touches the right border? The figure looks crammed there. If you want to use this as a conscious effect, then it's okay, otherwise it feels pretty random. I very like the mood, the face, I hope you can finish it.
Elidee: I don't know if it's because it's just a sketch, but quite alot of stuff is just a strange blob here (for example the hands). Something with the perspective seems also off for me, but it's a hard perspective. It's also very close to the original design.
Mercuralis: Nice picture, but I think this is also pretty close to the original design (if I understood the challenge desription well, I'm still a bit puzzled)
Pyroclasm: I'd choose the right one, with a cape.
KayOnim: It's a little bit spoonfed (if that's the word) Her head looks a little bit too adult.
mechasiva: I like the pose, and the thoughts behind it. How will you make him different than the original idea? It looks to become a really nice picture when it's ready.
baxter: nice pictures, I like the cooler colored Destruction, it has more variation in color.
Darthmarsh: coming along nicely, but then will it have hands?
spaztastic: It's very different than the original one, which is I presume a good thing. Her head seems a tad big. And the way the legs connect to the torso seems to puzzle you a bit.
agnostes: interesting sketch, and very different.
jpedro:this Desire is also too girly. prbably we have to stick with the double gender thing. It's a really nice sketch otherwise. Maybe if you make her/his hair shorter, more boyish, or something?
Nadiamoon: This is also close to the original design, isn't it? Not that it's a problem for me. :)
Dream sear: I really like this picture, but here Desire looks too much like a boy. I don't get the gender ambiguity that much. Maybe if his jawbones wouldn't be so strong? or the same face and breasts? Ugh.
Avisnocturna: now, that's a Desire! It's so puzzling what gender it is. I like it.
JaneM: I think it will be good picture.
Scottmcd: I like the cartoony approach, but that face maybe doesn't work with it, as you've said. I think it could have a bit crazier look if the eyes would be sad. Now it just looks like it has so much fun that it's laughing so hard it cries.
fersteger: your painterly style is really nice! And I really don't have anything bad to say about the picture, I like the crazy colors as well.
DecayingLolita: this is the best picture I've seen from you so far. Seriously. Finish him! hehe.
KuGu: I like the headthing, it's pretty different from the original, good job.
brewin: there seem to be some anatomy issues. Is the middle drawing Death or Destiny? Or is Death everyone's Destiny? haha. I think you should finish the Death on the right, concetnrating on making her a little bit different than the original. Maybe.
Heliux: This Death/Destiny though seems interesting.
Dimagyan:Nice sketch, it's too close to the original blabla. :)
Amber Alexander: Now that's far away from the original! The arms/legs look a bit too tubular.
Pheike: A bit too sketchy, so I don't see how it will look at the end.
RichLyons: That's also quite close to the original design if I dare say that. Nice sketch.
daestwen: nice gender mixup, that's also close to the original, or isn't it? I start to get confused. :)
Ghostbursh: really nice ideas.Me likes.
dirkvadulmen: very funny sketches. I think this is also pretty close to the original but I don't care in this case because it's so funny.
Mara644: she could be a bit more delirious. now she is just a jolly girl.
Arthur Two Sheds: I like your pissed off, ugly Morpheus.
Poshspice: Now I see! This pinky girl is really different than the Death from comics. Nice.
darknight: hm. Somehow I really like these. I don't say they are pretty pictures in a conventional way, or anything, they remind me of child's drawings. I can feel the rotting innocence in them.
Sorknes: I think it's different enough. Maybe.
Kleewyck: finish it, it's a different and amusing idea.

Phew. Now someone write a lot of bad stuff about my picture. Or anything.

I really like all the different versions that people are coming up with, very interesting to see the progression day by day.

Nightblue: yours is my favorite, I really like your painting style. I took a look at your portfolio and that last scene in 3ds max made my jaw drop, beautiful work, some day I hope to be at that level.

Update: I really wasn't satisfied with how my character was turning out, so I reworked alot of it and gave her a more magical look and turned her ankh into a staff. I still have alot of work to do on the clothes but I'm very new to painting digitally so any feedback would be appriciated :)

hungryan - I'm glad you can see it is all a part of my artistic statement. My painting is so punk that it is banned from participating. Now I will cover it in drugs and lighter fluid, light it on fire, and throw it off a bridge. I see what you mean about the jacket. Thanks :)

About your drawing, it is hard for me to make a criticism because it is still a sketch and until there is some color it can be difficult to know what some of the lines mean. Like the squigly lines could be floating in space or a pattern on a wall, but hopefully they make sense to you going forward. When I make a sketch like that it is more to remind me and indicate what is in my head rather than resemble the finished thing. So, sorry, I can't really say anything bad :) It does remind me of Pan's Labrynth, and that is good.

Holy crap, some amazing ideas so far people... i feel somewhat underwhelmed at my own ideas now and will try and push to develop my ideas further tonight and post again tomorrow the one i go with. the following are the sketches i did late last night in a brain dump. i did pages of sketches but my scanners broke so these will have to do for now. im leaning towards either death or destiny atm as the others are too shrouded to be classified "characters" by the definition of a chow (esp dream) but i figured i may as well post the ideas all the same, let me know which one is your fav... these are just the initial basis for the ideas which ill be elaborate on in the final compositions:

(In order of images shown below)

Destiny: an entity of light at the end of a book which holds the past the present and the future, he is seen to be scripting the present as it happens atop of his perch of solitude. only he was there at the beginning, and only he will remain at its end.

Desire/Despair: half beauty, half beasty they are twins (conjoint) which are so beautiful and yet so shocking you cant look away

Destruction: his mere touch is enough to make ashes of whatever he sees fit

Dream: lives his world in a bubble, small artifacts and dream sequences refract through his sometimes merky and sometimes crystal clear waters

Death: her red hair blends into the blood like tears in the rain, she stands muted and unwavering as her decisions are final. she is death.

Potential combo: the endless

cheers

@ Mercuralis: Love the outfit and the idea of the "dream globes" or am I way off? :0

@ AvisNocturna: Thanks ^_^ your piece reminds me of TLOTR...Not sure why..but thats not a bad thing at all...great colors.

@ MichaelNoel: great start...but careful with her back...she's sitting one her lumbar region and it looks painful @_o

Nightblue: Wow..really nice pic...the colors are so vibrant. I love her pose too...but make sure to push that "delirium" on her...it's a tough one :P

@ hungryan: WOW! on behalf of EVERYONE, thanks :D thanks for taking the time! where are your updates? :3

@ RichLyons: Dang! thats all kinds of cool, man! can't wait to see the finished piece!

@ NicHolS: Very ambitious...looking good too...I think my favorites are Desire/Despair...but Destiny is coming in a close second...I hope you can get them all finished :)

Here's my update: I decided to trash the pose and go for something a little more iconic to describe the character design. The idea of the bird over the eyes is that I see destiny also as a messenger...the branches behind him will be representing spring/summer/and winter to evoke the idea of past/present/future. I still have some work to do: fix his belt, add the chains work on the drapery etc...and then Ill begin on an "action shot" :D

There are some sweet looking entries already!
Arthur 'Two Sheds', RichLyons, Nichols - slow down, would you?

I've gone with Despair.

Naked as naked can be, shards of mirrors floating around her (supposedly uses the mirrors to look at people in despair....or something) - not sure if i'll have the shards tied to her body.

She is supported upright by the hands of those who are in despair - she is literally the weight on their shoulders (ouchies). And she's got that hook held in her left hand.

What a round.

A Rockstar Desire. Decided to push the androgeny thing as far as I could. Hope it's far enough.

As for the human heart being crushed in the hand... well, that's Desire's job isn't it?

A strange creature indeed.

Franna: The legs need work, which you're probably getting to. Maybe shift weight to one leg or the other - the current could be more interesting. Get a good line of action going through the figure.

Ramza: Nice start - it looks underwater even it this early stage.

Iliada: I'd focus on concept. I see that Destiny is sitting on the giant book, but is he happy, sad, or otherworldly? What will be unique and interesting about the clothing? Should the non-chained hand be supporting his weight, and how would that affect the rest of the figure? As for anatomy, the legs are too thin horizontally and you should see some indication of foreshortened thighs.

IIKII: Good start on the character. The bubble wand suggests weird shaped bubbles, something done in the comic in the Brief Lives arc. One of Delirium's trademarks is the blue eye and the green eye. Doesn't have to smack you in the face, but it should be in there. Maybe have a more pronounced curve for her back and pelvis transition.

KuGu: Quite symmetrical at the moment, but you mentioned re-doing the pose. The belt is way cool. It's not clear to me what you're going for in the lower part of the picture.

NicHolS: Up to you of course, but if you go with Death I think that black hair is almost always one of her trademarks. I don't associate blood with her, either.

RichLyons: Nice start. Something about his right foot looks off to me, like he's rocking back on his heels but is actually off balance. Nice work on last time's demon btw.

AmberAlexander: I like idea for the pose, but I think you should exaggerate it a little more. Make it clearer which hip the weight is on, which would therefore be higher. I like the facial proportions in your sketch better than the more recent version.

Uglyographyer: Very cool and sad concept. We've always seen Despair as overweight, so taking it to the other extreme is effective. My wife calls pigeons "rats with wings." I don't know about the expression on her face - it's almost scary whereas my reading in the series was that she did feel compassion for those in her realm and felt a certain amount of depression herself.

feifeicreate: Nice start. The draped curtains effectively frame Desire and are just enough off center. You are making the background pillow a heart, aren't you? To me the cowboy boots don't match the rest of the outfit, but I'm pretty fashion unconscious.

Nightblue: Really like this so far. Of the Deliriums so far, you've really got her "not all there" look and expression. Be careful of the potential tangent between the goldfish and her finger. The interaction there isn't worked out yet, but it's a pretty important part.

MJ Alcazar: The imperfect arch on the window is really distracting. If you're going to frame her with the window be sure to spend the time on it so that it looks good. I like the pose - calm without being stiff. Make sure you flip the image - she might be just so slightly off balance to her right.

Mercuralis: Lovely work so far. The crotch may be a little high, but it's not distracting or out of the realm of possibility. For the back hand, maybe he could be holding one of his three tools. There was the bag of sand, the weird alien looking mask, and the ruby (which I see around his neck). I like the jacket.

That's all the time I have for now.

OK, so I think I will try to finish this Dream thing, otherwise I will not finish another Chow, like many times before :). Instead of going with that graphical style which I've had before I decided to go more plastic/surreal (after all dreams and surreality isn't far away from each other). I keep the stars on the clothes, but the clothes will be like clothes and not a black mass. I also didn't like that I didn't have any contrast on my picture, dark on dark meh, so I've changed the contrasts. Hope it will turn out to be something bearable.

Kugu: I only had time in my workplace to either comment or go on with my stuff, so I've decided I will comment.

some observations:

KayOnim, i really like your idea with the toy and balloon and then changing all that in the shadow. i think your giving the shadow a bit too much weight in the picture,i'd like to see more of the girl really.

Pyroclasm00, i think it's a great approach, the last one works best for me.

Mercuralis, i think your own judgement on the legs and such is correct, i dunno if he could be holding sth. like a mini dreamcatcher in his other hand? -.- just an idea...

Elidee, book-burden idea is cool, maybe you could even chain it to the foot? kinda holding her prisoner too...

MichaelNoel, quite like the face on her, the skin tone is also very cool, her right shoulder seems to be a bit far down and her right leg would be too small in comparison to her left i think....i like the pose as such though, it looks a bit disinterested which is actually a nice opposite to what she represents.

MJAclazar, couple of small drawing issues in the BG the arch on the window, and also on the girl, on both her hands i'd recheck the way they rest on the hip and how the thumb goes into the pockets... but dood, you're improving fast. hope you can finish!

Nightblue, looks really promising, the only mini crit is that i'd clarify a little better the way the lower of the thwo fish is situated behind that hand, the overlap you have there is creating almost a bit of an optical tangent with the index finger, but i think this is going to be great!

that's all i can do for now...

great stuff folks, and lastly, i just want to throw sth. out about Desire and the topic of "it" being androgynous...looking at the Wiki text:

Desire: Desire is beautiful, slim, and truly androgynous, capable of appearing as a man, a woman, neither, or possibly both.

so in my understanding of the text, the chracacter CAN be drawn as a girl, or boy, or as many have chosen, sth. in between. But "it" looking androgynous is not what actually MAKES the character truly androgynous, as stated in the text, it is the abiltiy to appear in any gender as needed.

I always was intrigued by the 'first' Despair, the one that died and got replaced by the one we see in the series (I keep hoping Gaiman is sitting on a script about the story behind her death and replacement... Surely he knows what happened to her!?? ;)). From what is seen of her in Endless Nights, the old Despair is wise, knowledgeable and eloquent so I'm trying to reconcile her monstrous appearance with that of an old wisewoman with a bit of a Native American feel. It's tough since she's naked :P

Hm, first post in ages. Anyway I really wanted to give this a go as I've read the Sandman and loved it. I tried Destiny. The concept is pretty simple - I wanted to emphasise his blindness rather than hide it, and I then just modified the book and chain motif a little. He's gone a bit Dr. Manhattan but hopefully it's not too screaming. His dress-thing is meant to be swirly bits of paper/scrolls. Symbolic, y'see? Colour and so on will follow, most of the linework will go.

Finally got some time to comment on entries! They're all so interesting so far, and there are lots of things I like in each.

Kleewyck: The bird idea is a very different take on death. I think the high cheekbones work well this design, and I like the ankh-sword.

Sorknes: Great that you included the goldfish balloon, and I think your idea of adding the tutu will help to differentiate this design a bit more. Maybe pushing the asymmetry will help too.

Baxter: I've loved your versions so far. I agree that the cool color version of Destruction is not the first instinct, but I think I prefer it to the warm version by a little bit.

Darknight: The dreamy Amano feeling you wanted is definitely there, with that oversized throne. It's imposing, yet lonely. The legs/knees do look a little disjointed though.

Amber Alexander: I like the ankh-staff you changed it too. One suggestion is to add in the eye swirl tattoo that Death normally has, and maybe darken the hair a bit. The duality you're going for is a great idea.

Poshspice: I'm really loving the bubble-gum colors in the rough color version, and the little bow in Death's hair. I really like the family picture sketch with Death, Delirium, and Desire as well. They're all interesting designs, yet it's still easy to tell who's who.

Arthur Two Sheds: A definitely different, and scary, take on Dream! The incorporation of the dreamcatcher is fantastic.

AvisNocturna: You really captured the androgynous nature of Desire, and I love the lounging pose. I can't wait to see this finished.

Mercuralis: I loved seeing this evolve! The symbols of the siblings in the bubbles is a great idea. I really do think adding the sand trailing from his hand and a sandier mist in the forefront would work out great.

Mara644: Very confident pose, and the hairstyle is perfect for a take on Delirium.

Ghostbrush: I really love the squid-hair, and the drifting/dreamy pose.

Dream_Sear: Great job so far, I like the new expression a lot.

fersteger: More and more detail gets added every time! The bright and varied colors are lovely.

Brewin: I really dig the dynamic book poses for Destiny so far, and the half-hooded face.

KayOnim: Death as a little girl is an interesting idea, especially with the more traditional grim reaper rising up in the back. Glad to see the details like the eye tattoo there.

Hungryan: I think the slightly inhuman look makes him feel strange and timeless, in a good way! The incorporation of the stars into the clothes and the upped contrast look great in the newest version.

scottmcd: I really love the fiery and colorful hair for Delight/Delirium. It's a simple, but really interesting piece.

Daestwen: Wonderful expression on Desire's face there, and it's solid lineart so far.

RichLyons: I think it looks great! Destruction-biker is a neat idea, and the motorcycle looks good so far.

Pheike: the sketchiness gives it a good energy so far, especially in the pages.

feifeicreate: The overall comp is really strong. I like the boots+fishnets combo.

Nightblue: This looks more and more polished each time. The feathery colors in the hair, asymmetry, and the swirling pose are wonderful.

DIMAGYAN: I think the size of the head looks okay, and your outfit is definitely one I can see a more toned down Death wearing.

Heliux: The sketch so far is really different and interesting. I want to see more! :)

KuGu: Wow, my Destiny is completely outclassed! This is such a powerful pose and a really different, mystical take on the character. The messenger birds over the eyes is my favorite thing so far.

DecayingLolita: A very pretty version of Dream, and very melancholy. Maybe putting his raven Michael in the piece would help push the mood.

JaneM: The duality idea between Destruction and creation is going great! His mustache is awesome.

Nadiamoon : I really like the development so far, and the BG. A very archaic and ancient seeming Dream!

jpedro : Such a strong pose, and I really love the position of the feet and toes. Maybe a feather would work better as a romantic playful icon than a yo-yo? The idea is great though.

darthmarsh: That lotus keeps looking better and better! Maybe a starry background that emphasizes his eyes, and draws in a little more color than blue, would look good.

agnostes: Wow, that hair on Dream is striking!

Spaztastic: I think the nipples are a little high, and maybe some more blues would better emphasize that this is Despair.

mechashiva : I like the pose and the idea of the blood trail. His skin colors look great so far, especially the purple-blue shadowing.

Running out of time, I'll try and post more later.

Pretty sure with this angle I bit off more than I could chew, but scrapping it now would probably lead to me not finishing this. I took Hungryan's advice and tried to modify the clothing to make the design a bit more unique. The anatomy is still wonky, bit I'm trying to figure out of to fix it. Toying with the idea of ink/words from the book bleeding up his arms, and I need to pump up the shadows on the skin (maybe with some blues).

There is too much awesome here to comment on everything.
But specifically, I really really like where
darthmarsh and tommoy's pieces are going.

Heres just a couple costume thumbs I've got here, I really love the idea that the endless appear in different forms depending on who's looking, especially dream obviously, So I'm focusing on two things mainly: Dream as he might appear to a norse culture, perhaps to a norse shaman of some kind (I also liked the fox-spirit thing from the tale in japan). And the fact that dream is the ultimate storyteller. the latter will become more apparent as the piece as a whole moves forward, I'm hoping to weave in bits of scrolls and runes and such, crafted from his sand. (also, theres gonna be a big black shock of hair coming out the back of the helmet)

Feels obligated to write some critique here. The only thing I learnt from all those years in art school is how to trash other people's work and make it sounds like "constructive". So if my comment offend anyone...feel free to trash my work. LOL.

So here it goes:

Amber Alexander : Love The costume, tattoo, and rather Egyptian style. Would be great if the muscle structure is more defined, and since you have one primary light source down below, several secondary light source above, the lighting is kind of confused.

Sekino: Nice despair. And I really like Native American "death", refreshing approach compare to other Goth/Emo/Dark..."death". I know nothing about the comic though, don't know if the style fits the requirement.

Dan: Have to say, the best Dream I've seen so far, very original, and "dreamy".

Agnostes: What is on his back? a sward? I like the pose though, light source is a bit confusing, but I think it's probably because the art work is still at a very rough stage.

GloomBunny: Very close to the comic book style death...Would be nice to step out side the box a bit. That's how I picture it, if one of those days, Death came to visit me, what would she look like to me? (I my head, she's probably Chinese...LOL).

Dirkvandulmen: Cool Destruction. Be careful with your light source though, The shadow of the sward seems a bit off.

longshao: Nice mood. Looking forward to see how it turns out.

Elidee: The perspective is a bit off. But the angle is very interesting. I wonder why you would pick this difficult angle, does it attribute to the overall composition? Does this particular angle helps to tell the story and his personality? I think it is very important for illustrator to consider his/her painting from this perspective, everything on the picture needs to serve your motif (Think of it in this way, you spend all those hours paint this d$%m thing, might make every stroke count). My suggestion would be get your friend to pose for you and take a picture of him from second floor or something. That will definitely help you get the prospective and anatomy right.

Pheike: nice destiny. Although...it does look a bit dark, I know I'm personally favors dramatic lighting and bright color, so if it's not your style, ignore me please :D

Dream Sear: I love the halo and her expression. It's like saying "come and get me, jerks!" or something like that. (sorry if that's not what you have in mind...) And the snake is nice touch.

Tommoy: So....this is ....destruction? Sorry I'm not familiar with the comic book...Love the color, love the armor...Don't know about sneaker though, for me, they're kind of out of place, stand out too much. If it's me, I'd either add other elements to match with the sneakers, or drop them.

DarthMarsh: (star war fan?) Blue background, give you some depth. My painting prof. told me one principle: there's no "black".

Fersteger: Is that a sundial on her toes? yeah...it's getting weird. normally I'd say the anatomy is a bit off, but with all these twisting, dog in sunglasses and sundial...I say go for the twist and weird! color is great.

Audit: As long as you don't make his forehead glowing, I don't think he looks like Dr. Manhattan. The page dress is rather nice touch.

Hungryan: Dream I guess? Nice face. very different from the normal "dream" look. Personally, I think it'd be nice to have the skull facing him...but that's just me...and I know that would make him look like a weird Hamlet.

Spaztastic: Nice face. nice to have a somewhat Asian look for a change. remember the hook ring though...and despair is rather flab (over weight), she looks too pretty.

Franna: Nice Rockstar Desire. be careful with the face though.

Ramza: Nice start, nice mood, even at this early stage, I really think she's going to look great.

Iliada: Frontal foreshorten is almost always the hardest to draw, and even when you get it right, it looks awkward somehow. I'd play with the pose a little bit, to avoid the straight up frontal view, and to make the composition more interesting.

IIKII: Nice costume, right knee is a bit weird. I'd make her eye color brighter, because that's her feature.

KuGu: I love it. The face, belt, bird, pose, tree...it's coming together pretty nicely.

NicHolS: I like the idea. The composition is pretty good too, but I'm not sure if this will meet the CHOW requirement.

RichLyons: I don't think yours boring, not at all. I think he has a personality, and I like him (and the talking dog).

Uglyographer: I like your Despair, and she looked really desperate. I think that alone should do for this topic. but still don't know if you can get away with skinny figure and no hook ring for CHOW. otherwise, I think the picture looks pretty good. just one thing, the pigens on the right lower conor, they looks kind of stand out, doesn't have connection with the the figure. if that's how you want it, that's totally fine.

NightBlue: Love her, nice hair, nice costume (the fur is really nice touch), the pose and color style works pretty well too. would be nice to see more fish and other pretty/crazy stuff around her.

MJ Alcazar: Your work come alone pretty well over the time. And this death looks pretty good. and try not to cut off at the joints, like ankle, knee, waist, elbow, wrist...composition wise, it's consider a "no-no". Unless, of course, it is a design choice.

Majenkus: I like the over all style...although he remind me of Wolverine...I know...probably because I just watch the movie. And I really like the blue reflection light on his face.

MichaelNoel: Her face looks pretty nice, looking forward to see more.

Mercuralis: Love his face, and all those bubbles. dreamy mood is also very fitting.

KayOnim: Innocent child with a dark shadow? LOL, nice approach. I know it's too early to say, but no shadow is black. if the shadow gonna take the focus of the picture, might be a good idea to make it look more interesting.

OK....Page 3....

Mechashiva: Why does he look Greek? I like the pose, and dead body and blood trail (which is not yet there...but a good idea), as if he's rethinking his "destructive" lifestyle. But, in your sketches, I actually like the bottom right one, he looks really thoughtful.

~Baxter: So you want to draw all 7 of them in a tarot card kind of fashion? Ambitious. So far I like despair, Destruction somehow doesn't do it for me with his classical armor...I always picture him a more lay back carefree kind of guy, but what do I know about sandman, I never even read that book...LOL...

jpedro: Yeah~~~All I can say is: thank you mistress may I have another! I like the style, like the whip, how about a heart shaped yo yo? and boots! Can we have boots...please~~~~~pretty please?~~~~ anyway...I like it, color it up, and let's see how it goes.

Nadiamoon: Maybe it's the staff, but he looks like a Greek god...well, i mean he is a god....anyway, nice muscle, nice shadow, want to see more.

AvisNocturna: Desire, right? white hair? I'd make him/her more seductive...looks to me, he's too lay back.

JaneM: Love it! That's how I pictured Destruction after I read his description on wiki. someone you might want to be with, unless the rest Endless siblings...

Scottmcd: The background face profile is kind of confusing...I would give the face more texture or pattern or something to look at rather than just a block of dark color. foreground girl is pretty nice though, the style works pretty well with Delirium.

DecayingLolita: you mean dream as a lay back punk? LOL...I like him though. It is very hard to make something unusual when you have a subject so iconic.

Daestwen: Now we have a more sophisticated Desire, how Lovely! Remind me of those 18th century playboys. and the expression is dead on! but heart! where's the heart?

Ghostbrush: I like how you did with her hair, and the entire "ocean creature" theme works pretty well. tattoos is pretty cool too.

OK...I think I have everyone here....gosh, 2 hours! Anyway, for those who couldn't find their name on this list, two reasons:

1, the sketch is too rough to say anything constructive.

2, you're too damn good I don't have the nerve to critique your work.

Scottmcd thanks for the crit there. I moved the near-leg more out, if that makes sense. I think it helped a bit. Let me know if you still see issues.

feifeicreate: Yeah, making the shadow more interesting is a good idea. Not sure yet how i will do that but I'll sleep over it and tackle it tomorrow.

So, what have I done today? Again, not as much as I'd liked :(
Reworked the head, cleaned a few things, started to fill in some color and wasted a lot of time in between (I'm really good at that though :))

I wanted to see what it would be like if I sketched some legs. It's kinda weird, I feel like I'm plagiarizing myself. It wasn't meant to have legs, is it too weird?

Here are the collected WIPs

feifeicreate - I am interested to see this as it is cleaned up. The scene is really good (great angle). With all of the red why don't you use it to your advantage and sneak some contrasting colors into the parts you want to draw attention to? I think you hinted at that, but the skin, lipstick, and the eyes would be good places.

fersteger - WOW! That's so cool. The dog in glasses is great. The foreshortening, anatomy, and colors are really good. My mind is blown.

since several people mentioned about a male Desire, I think I'll give it a try. Although I'm still not sure if I want to go with the "drag queen" idea. But after sketched out, I actually like him! OK, I'll keep him male~~~thanks guys!

The contract color is a very good idea! Thanks! I'll have fun playing with it.

@ IIKII: Nice start :) The lighting is really nice but there is something wrong with the left knee. Other than that, I wish she were a little more delirious :)

@ Iliada: The anatomy is hard to crit with only an outline there...I would say look up references of people sitting in chairs to get the foreshortening right on the legs...and then the feet :teeth: work on thems ;)

@ Ramza: hard to say anything at this stage other than, it's way dynamic :) very cool

@ scottmcd: Thanks for the comment. THe symmetrical bit is intentional, like I mentioned I wanted to give him an iconic/stoic look, but Imalso working on the action pose...hope I can finish them :)

@ darthmarsh: Very cool idea. The only thing Im not too crazy about is how much white you're using. But thats may just be me. ;) I definitely vote for blue bg!

@ hungryan: There it is! :D Love the costume, it has a Coraline feel to the whole thing..I dunno why but it looks eastern European to me...but I could be way off....say, you live in Finland right? I was thinking of taking a trip there this summer...fill me in on whats good there if you can ;)

@ spaztastic: It's looking quite beautiful at the moment, but it's lacking in character...but that could be the fact that youre still wip'in anyhow, nice rendering ^_^

@ Sekino: Awesome Despair!!! love the languid troll-ish feel to her...very nice.

@ audit: Thanks ^_^ I like your design with the paper clothes...also it reminds me of the ghost of xmas future...in a good way...funny cus my actio shot of destiny also has him pointing ehehhe...good rendering to you, sir...or madam!

@ fersteger: wow...now THAT's delirious...very nineteeneighties @_@

@ Tommoy: Ummm im not sure who that is supposed to be...dream? destruction? either way, its wicked looking..badass!

@ dream_sear: Love the style of your painting! makes me think of Klimt...he/she/it has that "c'mere" look on his/her/it's face :teeth: great job..the snake is a nice touch too!

@ Pheike: Looks like shadowrun destiny! :D he has a funny grin on his face..like he's writing down people's destinies and cracking up about it...what a jerk! >:[ eheheheh oh wait..new update..nice!

@ Elidee: Wow..you DID pick an extremely difficult angle. I like the concept, but pulling this off is a difficult task...lets see: The feet are too big, the arms too long and the head is turned far too much...set it forward a bit and make it more of a profile, i think...here's a sketch hope you dont mind:
665101

@ longshao: DANG! more than Dream, Id call it nightmare! :D very cool so far..cant wait to see the figure in the bg worked up more...great job!

@ dirkvandulmen: AHAH! That sword is hugeamongous! what does he do with it? I doubt he can even hold it ehehe, love the goat ;)

@ gloombunny: Cool sketch, but yeah, 3/4 at least..show some LEGS! w00t! :D

@ agnostes: oooOOh! I like the colors...I wanna see his face up close, the mask looks awesome.

@ Dan!: Sweet. Just sweet.

@ Amber Alexander:Very nice painting. I love the tattoos and the staff..the lighting is good, but I would push the shadows a bit to give it more weight...

oof! lotsa stufff to still comment on...but cant...type...anymprw...so next update Ill comment on everybody else's :P

What a fun round!

KuGu- Love the destiny action pose. Pale rider looks awsome, I think your Death could do with being a little bit smaller thought (or the horse larger) I see what you mean about the white, I've tried to add some colour to help it stop dominating the painting, cheers!

Feifeicreate- Star Wars fan.........whatever gave you that idea  Cheers for the crit, I'm trying to add a bit of depth to it now. With yours, first off I preffered your original concept but having looked again at the new one. I think I like the tranny best (now that's something I thought I'd ever find myself writing!!!)

Scottmcd- Thanks buddy. Love yours. I have a suggestion for the silhouette, change it into a more feminin profile. It then could be Delirium remembering herself as she once was.

Djinn- Thanks, I like the bottom thumb the most

Elidee- Ask and you shall recieve and thank you. I would comment but KuGu has already done what I would have suggested. It's looking good otherwise.

More comments to come, in the mean time. I've been playing around with a colour overlay from the hubble telescope (just to see if it is worth painting the background like this) I quite like the results so far.

Cheers

LOL, star war fan? no idea...it just came to me like that...got to be the force speaking to me...or something.

Anyway, Love the update. the star back ground looks really mysterious, and the lotus is nice too. It's a very different Dream, I never really like Goth anyway.

As for the tranny...yeah....you're right....he looks more twisted than the female version...But, if I can't pull it off, he'll definitely end up looking like that guy from The Rocky Horror Picture Show........

Just a very rough sketch for now. Not sure I'll be able to get this one done.
Heading back state side and I've got a bum computer which I was hoping to use to put in the X-ray paintings.
Dream using Aboriginal x-ray painting. Seemed to make sense especially as so many of their stories are considered dreamtime. Hoping to add his sigil and Matthew as x-ray paintings in the background.

Kugu - thanks for the comment, man your destiny itīs so awesome it make me ashamed of my work xD, your death itīs look pretty cool, the only thing that need work itīs the horse (i think itīs a horse correct me if iīm wrong) it look to small in relation to the girl.

darthmarsh - i love it, the pose itīs great the colors look good the only thing that bother me itīs the left hand it look a little weird, also you could give him a little aura to avoid the blending with background.

Freddy Scribbles - you are still in the beginning theres nothing much to say, just take attention to the anatomy, looking forward for your next post.

Your's is looking good so far, I think the only thing that stands out at this stage is the fact that he needs more work to the shadow, to tie him to the floor properly and something bothers me about the belt, not sure what it is though.....sorry

I've added the two other faces, not sure if I prefered it without them or not?

pheike: cool concept, like it a lot. I don't know what you are going to do with your colours, but keep in mind that the blue of the background will reflect on the on his clothes, right now he looks a bit pasted.

Nadiamoon: wow, great colours! he looks sort of impressive!
darthmarsh: this looks much better now, I like the concept.

dream_sear: thanks for the suggestion! where's your update? :D

Freddy Scribbles: looks nice so far, although it looks like his upper part of the body is a bit off...

KuGu: you have to finish these...I can't even decide which one I like better! Destiny's pose rocks, really impressive.psantha: loving your concept with the heavy book and the creature...
LM.: well, that's coloursful! I like the pose, it fits her very well somehow, haha!

Liffey: Aw. she looks so cute! I Like your style and her expression

feifeicreate: I like the pose and perspective. yep, keep it male. and thanks for the crit.. yep... I feel like white hair fits androgynous... somehow, dunno why. I already tried to change his expression a bit, don't know If I succeded

Franna: I really like his clothes.
KayOnim: the idea is pretty cool, did I mention that already? :D

Updated WIP of Dream: almost completely repainted this today - the pose on the original was completely and utterly wrong. All that remains are the head, bits of shoulder, and bits of the cloak.

Darthmarsh - I would lose the extra two faces - while it looks good and they're well painted, I think they distract the eye and confuse the image. Good job on the cosmos BG, also.

Nadiamoon - Really nice textures. Proportions seem a bit odd - maybe it's the arms, (too short?), not sure. Also, not sure about the red thing at the crotch - i think it's the bright colour and radial lines, they seem to draw the eye too much at the moment.

AvisNocturna: The window looks good :)

darthmash - sorry =D, doing hands sucks i also have a hard time rendering hands, about my work iīm still exploring the bg for now iīm not worried about the details, the belt man, i now what are you talking about iīm also bothered with that it look like a "dick" i will try to modify it =X
thanks for the crit

AvisNocturna - the overal picture looks good but have a lot of place for improvement specially in the color side try play more with colors and values to see if can spice it up the pic, about the stained glass the design looks great but needs more color variation itīs look a little boring now.
edit- almost forgot it, try to give her a more womanly hands they look good but it would be a plus a more sexy hand. =)

about my concept iīm not sure if i will keep the backgroung, for now iīm just exploring that area if i decide to keep doing the BG at some point i will blend it with character, for now the character just have the basic colors adding the bg colors now would be to messy, thanks for the crit. =)

agnostes - cool character, he reminds me the vincent from ff7,i have nothing to say for now, looking forward for the next updates

scottmcd
May 7th, 2009, 04:51 PM
darthmarsh: I'd lose the two extra faces too. I don't recall anything from the comic that would call that up in particular. There were the Fates/Grey Ladies that would be a natural fit for the threesome. Wow, that came out wrong.

AvisNocturna: You've sure got the androgyny going well. Very cool window - should it have a subtle glow to it to indicate light on the other side? Also, the way the pants on the left leg expand for the boot makes it look like the leg is broken.

NadiaMoon: Nice work and interesting. I'm not sure the "V" composition of the background works.

LM: I like the boots! :)

baxter--i like the somber feel of your character, the female i mean.

nightblue--cool! no crits.
Mercuralis--nice design and rendering, not sure if u wanna completely hide the feet.
Tommoy--i like what u have so far. the sneakers though, are kinda random.
feifeicreate--good idea, would like to see it more finished.

darthmarsh--2 more faces wouldn't be a problem. be aware how u put em together with the rest of the body.
dan!--very nice.
agnostes--like the character. his cape is grabbing too much attention though.

Man, there are so many entries this time, I couldn't begin to comment on them all! Not sure I'm qualified. ;) So I'll confine my comments to the League of Desire. We are legion.

AvisNocturna: Like it lots! I think the clothing/drapery need refining, though. Great hair. Nose might be a tad pink. Paint on!

feifeicreate: That's one cool design! Saucy! I'm glad you decided to decrease the obvious breasts; it fits the brief a little better now. Can't wait to see colors.

Franna: Kinda rough yet, but I think it's a solid start. The feet feel ginormous, though that might just be a stylistic choice.

jpedro: Cute and clever, but not the least bit androgynous.

daestwen: No crit so far! Great expression.

Posh: We're not worthy.

btw learn to filter the crits everyone has different tastes just be true to yourself. =)

dream_ser - what lovely painting itīs one of my favorites, nothing to crit.

Freddy_Scribbles - the face need works the body itīs ok, try to study some face anatomy just to put everything in order.

Arthur - its looks good but iīm not feeling the wing.

audit
May 7th, 2009, 10:32 PM
@Arthur - I think the wing could work, but watch the foreshortening on the arm, it seems a bit...chunky

@Avisnocturna - I like how it is progressing, but the palette feels a little gloomy for my taste. You could perk it up with a few really definite light sources.

@Pheike - watch the proportions on the head, it's a bit small

@Kugu - cheers.. I like Destiny's action pose. Pointy!

@KayOnim - hmm, you've chosen a tricky depiction. If it were me I would focus on the child and leave the reaper shadow as a subtle suggestion during the rendering phase. I can't help feeling you'll have to invest a lot of time in making the background work well for this one.

@longshao - update plz :)

Sekino, dan!, fersteger, Psantha, Nadiamoon, Agnostes, dream_sear - loving these

In the meantime, this is what I've been working on during my train rides today.

edit: errrr, excuse the random note I wrote on there.... it was a quote I wanted to remember from ladies I was eavesdropping on (it was kind of unavoidable, how loud they were speaking) and it's kind of an inside joke and requires too much explanation... the point is i wrote it down and totally forgot it was there. Sorry!

@ KuGu: It looks eastern-european probably because I'm from Hungary, not from Finland. I just live and work here. By the way I love your composition for Destiny, looks very dynamic!
Lot of new and good work here, hard to keep up with comments, but I will try to squeeze in some time for them. And also for painting mine.
psantha:Wow! I might know you! I went to the same school as you in the same years, and now you end up in Australia and I end up in Finland. Really nice painting by the way! Is that a pen tip? Ügyes!

This CHOW is getting pretty intense, a lot of sweet entries. Time to throw in a few crits.

Mercuralis: Thanks! Went with yours and a few others advice on the cooler palette, and focused my efforts towards Destruction first! Looking forward to seeing your final:D

hungryan: Thanks I actually prefer yours with the lines, but that's just my graphical side speaking.

longshao Thank you. I really gotta get back to working on Despair, Destruction took me for a ride and I left her in the dust lol.

feifeicreate: Lol, I wish i had the time and energy to do all 7. I do so the tarot card deal a bit, but I wasn't intentionally taking them that direction :P The new color scheme is definitely an improvement, much easier on the eyes.

KuGu: Really digging those action poses. Destiny's feels very commanding, and awesome.

psantha: Very nice entry!

I think im finally done with this mofo, aside from a few final touch ups. I think this has probably the funnest CHOW yet for me. Rocked out the Daft Punk' Alive 2007 and got some stuff done for once! As for the others, I'm gonna finish Despair and scrap Destiny. Unless i get a sudden urge to work on some more :P

Also, Poshspice, for those of us doing more than one, should we just put all the picture into one single picture or are we just to pick one of the ones we did for the poll?

Hi,everybody:)
I wasn't here for quite a time. But recently I jumped to see what's going on and it gave me a great inspiration. And seens I'm trying to make as much painting as possible - I've decided to take a part here too. I'm not sure if my approach is correct - I kinda went too far with the background..I wanted to show Dream at his another affair. :)

wow crazy busy week, only just got a chance to post today :(

update: i think my monitors off as this looks dark as! ill fix this if i can!

i took everyones feedback on board and having seen the standards lift from a few awesome artists i decided to give mine more thought. i decided to go with one image (sorry for misleading some people who thought i was going to do all of them) and chose to go with destiny... like a few others out there!

some explaination of my idea so far: i decided to go with a personification of a collective not a single person or soul. i wanted to link the figure with the book of destiny as i see both as essentially the character and wanted to have him shed the pages from his own body. i also wanted the book to become more decrepit the further down the book and have sand seeping out from the pages like a hourglass and tie in the whole passage of time theme. i figured that since destiny had been there forever and will always be there it would be fitting to have him signified by something potentially so temporary and illusive as a candle. in reality they melt down over time but instead his candle never runs out, forming a greek-esq style hair with molten wax trails and drips.... ive still got a bit more work to do tomorrow but hes getting a lot durther down the line now... ill see if i can try and hone the ideas more and if anyone has any suggestions, shoot! and on that note heres some feedback for everyone...

Tommoy: im getting more of a destruction vibe then dream, maybe adding some hints of imagery or something into the mix, maybe something phsychodelic like how the vikings would take mushrooms before battle? i dunno... its a hard one! but i love the armour all the same

Gothique: thats really twisted, the hair and mouth are haunting but i think her legs could use more emotion, maybe their clenched or flailing more?

Poshspice: hot damn, love your death but not sure how the pink fits in lol great illustrative quality as per usual!

~baxter: maybe lengthen his spear just a tad more, he looks like hes holding it very close to its end

psantha: wow very vivid imagery, the tone of this image is really striking, cant wait to see it finished... maybe have him holding the book up with his right hand? at the moment it feels a little disjointed esp at the elbow

feifeicreate: nice composition, cant wait to see her polished! definately spot light!

daestwen: youve done a great job of the ambiguity of the gender!

Amber Alexander: i agree her foot is the one thing which stands out to me too...

spaztastic: it would be good to see a little more emotion in her eye brows, they are a bit flat to me for dispear, maybe a slight frown line on the brow or between her eyes?

audit: very dark, nice!

Arthur 'Two Sheds': definately no wings, unless theyre black and broken and twisted perhaps? great character in the eyes though

dream_sear: wow i really love this one, the face is scarey... those eyes... theyre following me!

AvisNocturna: great pose! makes me want to rethink parts of mine to make it more natural

darthmarsh: sweet composition, very ethereal feeling...

Pheike: great costume design, not sure about the colors, maybe add more shadows and blacks to the background and to help frame the character better on the page (make him pop!) love the dnd vibe!

Nadiamoon : not sure if i wouldve done red with the eyes, maybe blue? seems more like nightmare! (and im writing this at just gone 2am) lol thanks!

KuGu: my fav of the lot so far, wow mate... makes me feel bad for picking the same character... but interesting to see you hit on similar ideas that i had while brainstorming... cant wait to see the finished piece

Majenkus: heh greasers all the way... take that jocks!

scottmcd: love your style, im glad to see someone doing a non gritty style on here, salute! very much reminds me of the characters in fallout 3... or maybe ive just got that game on the brain haha :D

Djinn : impressive sketches, want to see more!

Sekino : SICK... one word...

Dan! : love the symbology! i really feel mines lacking some of that... hmm might have to rethink that now

dirkvandulmen: great style! that sword is awesome! are you gonna do a bg? cant wait to see it finished

longshao: that image is sweet, i want more!

Ramza: haha damn! very cool, hope youre gonna finish this one

RichLyons: haha so much of you lives in your drawings you realise? haha i love it as per usual mate... cant wait to see him polished!

sigh sheesh so many good entries... what a chow!

audit- thanks for the crit, about the head in my work honestly itīs not 100% accurate but i think itīs fine (http://img183.imageshack.us/img183/6513/chow157pheikel.png)
now about your work i love the colors the light looks great very lively and the texture rocks, i have nothing bad to appoint.

spaztastic - iīm not sure what to say the figure itīs ok but lacks of personality also the nipples are too pink in my opinion.

Amber_Alexander - on the overall the things are bothering me are the face and the left hand the face look very souless the direction where sheīs looking doesnīt help at at all,the hand itīs to big try to make a thinner hand also play more with values.

Ronpower - love the linework i donīt know if my mind is playing me mind tricks but the neck looks weird can you give some input about that?

elliste - looks interesting very surrealistik, for now i donīt have much to say, looking forward for your next update.

dose - for now looks good, wainting for next update.

daestwen - i like it lot, very classy.

feifeicreate - love the linework with some good colors it will look amazing.

psantha - i love it, the design and colors look great.

baxter - looks very good, in overall itīs ok maybe you could improve the value and texture.

Gothique - damn that looks creepy, those legs need some fixing and try to give her a more fluid hair, the rest looks fine.

Tommoy looks great i like it a lot, i also didnīt read the story of the characters xD

curly - looks promising, the woman need some improvement, looking forward for the next update.

NicHolS- thanks for the crit. =)
I love your work, the idea the design the colors look great very inspiring.

dream_sear - it look awesome really love the colors, nothing to appoint.

ps. sorry for the crappy english. =)

Now my update

iīm going very slow, iīm always slow finishing the characters also i suck on making backgrounds actually iīm stuck on that i would love some tips, i hope that i am able to finish it on time.

Desire updated. Worked the bling and the pants. cleaned up the skin-rendering. Still need to do the boots, hair and bloody heart. Some comments would be swell.

I need some advice before I start rendering the hair, though. Which one is better? I just can't seem to decide.

Definitely the short hair (on the right) imo. The hair 'round the shoulders adds nothing, in fact I think it detracts, and it'll cause you a headache when you work into it more. Just my opinion :)

I was considering a monocle on her eye too. I tried flipping it so the eye that has the whorl on it would be visible but it didn't look so good reversed. The monocle would have a whorl attaching to a chain/string. Wasn't sure which eye to put it on though.

Also, the colors: how important is it for Death to wear all black, or can I just use very dark colors?

@Nichols, I had to take a long look trying to figure things out, as said I'm not acquainted with the story. The muscles on his torso look very nice rendered, his face however needs more work. The feet look very nice too but i would make them the same size.
@Feifeicreate, yes I lost the sneakers, but they pulled away the attention from the midsection, now I have to consider other focal points.
@Dream_sear, very nice, but his right hand keeps bothering me. Can't really put a finger on it, is it the knuckles, the length of the fingers or because his upper hand doesn't seem to have bones, I just don't know but there's something wringing.
@Pheike, nice character, especially the face. The bleu's, mostly in the floor look more intense then the reds in his coat, you can easily soften the floor and at the same time make it look more realistic by adding some textures.
@Agnostics, I love this character. Nice lighting on the face and shoulder. The lighting on his leg is distracting a bit. Maybe a bit more curve in his body would give his pose some more tension.

Hey, thanks Agnostes. I was leaning over the short hair cliff already, and you just kicked me off. I think it brings out the pendant on the chest more, and also adds to the androgeny, since the face is very feminine already. I appreciate it. :^^:

O.k. full Critique hold on to your socks:)

I will start with the ones on page two right after my last one.

dose Nice line work and I like the long swirly hair, she looks a bit stiff though,

kurios personally I am tired of the basic all black death idea death can be any thing you want it to be. However I think some thought should go into
it .Interesting way to use reference:)

franna The hair on top I think

agnostes I like the atmosphere and the lighting, the cape is good,
I think you need to put some atmospheric blur over that building or mountain
to push it into the bg

pheike Nice choice in characters:) I would like to see more bounced lighting, and some more shadow, I like the eye of ra on his chest that pretty cool.

mjalcazar Nice character and nice clean linework, I think her right arm looks to short, and her eyes are a bit out of alignment, looking to see it finished .

dreamsear feelin some Gustave Klimt in there :) I hope you keep pushing that.

nichols ok. so the papers are coming out of him and he is creating the book out of his body and he is also a candle, Neat painting, it makes you think:)

curly I like that you put a nice backdrop in their,:) I think it looks
like about evening in the image but the characters have a bit too much light on them.I am glad you started posting again.

tommoy spooky dream I like the samurai style:)

gothique yeah that is a good despair, I hope you finish:)

baxter I really like the roman look on your destruction, this is just
a personal pref but with line work images I prefer 5 or 6 values over 3 or 4
plus with the metal some sharp whites and not so blended, don't get me wrong I think its totally awesome I really like the whole lion theme their too:)

psantha cool Idea, I am glad your having so much fun:) cant wait for the final .

feifeicreate wow you really reworked it, too bad, I like your pallet and
your values, good design as well. no offense but I am not feeling to desirous
looking at that right now:S I cant wait to see the final peice I am sure it will
be good:)

daestwen glad to see you making one, nice line work, not much to say
at this point enjoy your train ride though:)

ellistewow your really going for something there, I like how you explored your pallet, keep being creative,:)

ronpower nice pencils, look foward to color:)

amberalexander you have an interesting way of painting, its kind of
3dish especially her staff, Im missing the wings though, I think because that
light on the staff is so bright you need the ground to reflect it more and give that dark shadow look behind her with sharp edges to it. but I know you already posted it so ...:)

spaztastic I think its way to soft right now, to much light pink, and light blue, I would really like something colorfull to pop out like a bright silk sash rapped around her or something. I really like the full boddy tattoo though:)

audit cool man!

arthur two sheds great painting, scary but good:)

freedy scribbles nice pencils, looking foward to color

avisnocturna I really like that design thing, nice bush with roses too:)

ianthegeek I really like that one man:)I cant wait to see it when your done

Pheike: no problemo mate, your new wip looks a lot better, i suggest making the bg overall tone greener then his blue on his pants but otherwise its coming along very nicely!

MJ_Alcazar: wow nice line work, cant wait for the colors

dream_sear: holy heck i really love it, there's a few things i could suggest if you are close to finished. id remove the ab definition, it isn't ambiguous enough for me, too masculine. also maybe raise one eyebrow or something to add more allure to the expression... otherwise i think you're pretty close to being done, you're right

curly: make sure you work more on your character as nice as the environment is, its a character of the week :P i like the idea alot though so stick at it

darknight: thanks, glad you like the concept, i was worried i worked too many small ideas into it and it became diluted somewhat,,, but i always did admire the old fantasy illustrators who worked in small details you could discover when viewing the image the 100th time even :P

scottmcd: you definitely should play the game, its made by the same guys who did oblivion, very great games studio! would be an honor working there!

Franna: definately short hair!

Tommoy: thanks for the tips, yeah i was aiming to have the food of our left on more of an angle, ill work on this for next post! and my girlfriend agrees the face needs more work... but im cautious to add too much detail as i wanted him to lack any real face (esp eyes as he is bling) and only left an impression of a furrowed brow to hint at whatever he may be writing at the time...

will post another wip tonight :) thanks all, keep up the great work, not long now!

I really like it! Great light and proportions ^_-

Franna,
Sexy. I like the cloth design :)Though body anatomy could use some fixies

spaztastic,
I really like it a lot!Probably it's one of my favorites! Her face is magnificent. And the atmosphere is great.
Some technical tips
*Add the bright from the now into the sky - it reflects the sky usually
*Some reflection of the girl at the stone could add
*Add some blue at her skin tones
*Straighten the stone
*Build perspective for these chinese gates or whatever it is and build them accurately
It's not much work after all - depite it looks like a long list :) Her face is amazing

wheezy,
Nice gothic girl - but for death, imho,it should be something special - kinda surrial - for now it lacks it for me

KleeWyck,
Great concept. Your use of colors is kinda poor - try to add other blues hues and mix more.
Ramza,
hehe - ugly despair!Love it. You don't need my advices for sure :)

The Original [E],
I like the character, but the colors need to be organized - now it seem kinda messy

Hi guys...Im gonna comment backwards from here... :P

@ KayOnim: I see what you're trying to do...the head does pop out, but you'll need to up the detail level in everything else so that you can avoid it being so obvious. that little girl creeps me out. @_@

@ RichLyons: Solid gold babeh!

@ threeeyesworm: Dunno why but at first glance it always hits me as an old sammurai. lloks good, but dont forget the 3/4s rule...you must show at least 3/4 of the character to make it to poll :)

@ IIKII: Very cool death!!! really like her..tho careful with her perlvis..its skewed to our left... <_< to fix it, lead the seams of the shirt to the left to then be centered along with her pelvis...does that make sense? @_@

@ The Original [E]: Very cool costume...I like the gun and the armor pads...but something seems off about the placement of the eye..cant say exactly waht..but overall this looks good.

@ Ramza: Im REALLY diggin the cellulitic (is it even a word?) texture of her flesh...awesome!

@ KleeWyck: I like the colors and the new pose you chose for her. the costume is pretty original too, but watch her venter of balance, she seems to be tipping backwards..might just be able to fix by riotating the figure a bit clockwise.

@ wheezy: YOU CAN DO EET! eheh :)

@ spaztastic: Well, I could have told you she was japanese just by looking at the figure :) make sure when youre done w the BG that you bring some of those bg colors to the figure to tie her in to the environment.

@ Franna: That's androgynous as all get out...at first I didnt think it would work without a shirt (it leaves little doubt that its a guy) but when you scan the image you get the femminine face and the masculinish curvy body and it leaves doubts about the sex of the character...very well done!

@ psantha: I like your take on the character...but that right hand bugs me a bit...its twisted a tad too much IMHO...but otherwise very cool.

@ Razorleaf: Its a good start, cant wait for you to add mre character to it :)

@ Gothique: That is one disturbing chick!!! love the idea of the hair cutting into her...dont know what it means but I like it!

@ Dose: Either way, add some color to it! :D looks very relaxing to lay on a cushion of one's own hair :teeth:

@ dream_sear: Mother of mercy! your piece is looking fanfreakingtastic!!!! love it!

@ NicHolS: Thanks! and might I add, the idea of the pen nib fingers is awesome. is his head made out of wax?

@Darthmarsh & Pheike: Too right you are gents! thank you...but it's not a horse, its a goat, so I went ahead and made it smaller eheheh let me know if its looking better! :P

here's an update on death on her fetid, decaying goat. :mod: I fixed some problems with the original sketch and turned to goat ever so slightly towards camera...hope to finish..time to speeeed paint @_@

Some comments from my side. Don't take them too seriously...

Ramza: Some serious fatness there! I would try and give the transition from face to chin a bit more definition. Stick some folds or double chins or something in there. But it looks good.

KuGu: Excellent composition this. Can't wait to see what you do with the background (colourwise). Also, I'm glad I'm not her, look at where those horns are pointing.

DecayingLolita: You have to finish Damnit! Make some time. The head feels a bit small, considering its roundish shape. Taller people usually have taller heads, i think.

KayOnim: Very interesting, I especially love the little skull in the hair. I don't think the Grim-Head popping out works that well. I have an idea though, if you look at tall shadows like this, they usually have a gradient. They fade out as they get wider, if that makes any sense.

RichLyons: One of my favourites so far. Is that A breastplate on a fat guy?
And the bling, this guy is just so cool.

Threeeyesworm: You obviously know by now that you have to expand your canvas, and I think in terms of composition that could help you as well, cos this should have an epic-style background.

IIKII: Your death kinda looks like a GI-JOE, with her top kinda detached from her bottom. I would rotate the bottom. The face is cool though.

The Original [E]: This is destruction 200 years from now. It really emphasizes the endless' immortality this. I hope you can come up with something to give it a little more atmosphere that it lacks.

KleeWyck: I don't think that skintone works to maximum effect here. have you tried others?

Wheezy: Can't really say anything at the mo. Would like to see more. Face looks like Bill Kaulitz, and I suspect you used him as reference, but i might be wrong.

spaztastic: I would try some harder brushes on this piece. Also, maybe lower the horizon a little.

psantha: The little bookmarks in the oversized books are awesome. Major events in history those. The strange hand gesture sort of confuses me when I'm looking at his face though.

Razorleaf: Like the web idea. The character looks a bit too generic though (man in a robe. the end). Maybe put some glowy eyes in there, or something. Give it something personal and original.

dose: That hair is just brilliant. You can do so much with color here. So many options. Can't wait.

NicHols: Great. That character is just too well thought out. He looks like he's writing at a thousand miles per hour. Must be something important. Can't say anything except, he looks like he's about to fall off. Have you experimented with twisting the whole picture slightly clockwise?

kurios: I would put something in there that makes it "Death". Cos tight now it's just a steampunk lady.

agnostes: Great colours. Can't really spot anything off here. Good work.

Pheike: What a crazy design! Why don't you cut off the sides a bit? Because you really don't need to be dealing with a background like that. Focus on the character.

MJ Alcazar: Is your keyboard really doing that? Cool. That's a solid design. The hair on the right (her left) feels a bit big to me though. Gives her head a strange shape, if you know what I mean.

dream sear: Those eyes are deadly. I am actually not that familiar with this particular style, so I can't really say much. The skin looks good, soft and almost translucent.

Tommoy: Cool. He's so angry. I'm really interested in the figure in the back. What is that? Also, at that angle, maybe Dream's mouth should be a bit closer to his nose, and it looks a bit like he has no chin.

Baxter: Destruction looks focused and deadly. Have you tried another eye colour? Like red or orange or something. Nothing wrong with the blue, just something I would look at, that's all.

feifeicreate: Good stuff. The confident tranny looks very cool. We all really want to see this cleaned up. It's awesome.

daestwen: That's true Androgeny there. I really don't know what that is, genderwise. Looks like it's drinking blood, yummy. Sorry if it's supposed to be wine. But isn't red wine more like the colour of the waistcoat? Would really like to see more.

elliste: Would like to see where this goes. That sock is just crazy, in a good way of course. Also, are you outside-hosting your images? remember to use the attachment manager instead, in the final at least, otherwise you won't go to poll.

Ronpower: this is awesome. Great pose and great linework. Really like your style. I would make her pendant an ankh though, instead of a cross. Just cause it's sort of death's constant trademark.

audit: Looks good. Interstin lighting scheme. I think his one arm is a bit fatter than the other one, and the one that's pointing doesn't seem to have an elbow, or some sort of joint there. cool design, tough.

Arthur 'Two Sheds': That's some scary stuff. The gasmask tattoo is the best. And his hair looks like pollution, but maybe that's just me. It's brilliant. That back hand looks tricky. Good luck.

Man, I wish I could do everyone, but I need to finish my own too. Okay then, back to work. So long.

Ramza: Looks done to me. Post it before you break it!
KuGu: Really nice figure. Goat hind legs look a bit funny. It'd be nice to see some glistening flesh around the boney goat head. Get your paint on ;)
DecayingLolita: He looks a bit depressed, but that fits. Nice touch with the mask.
KayOnim: Nice Episode One homage :)
RichLyons: Good solid work in every way. Can't fault it. And smoking terriers rule.
threeeyesworm Good foundation, needs more work. Also, maybe check: the >= 3/4 rule.
IIKII: Death's upper torso is ace, but her lower half is too square-on to work anatomically. I'd suggest repainting from the waist down, turning her hips a few degrees to the right. Delerium pose is much more natural.
The Original [E] : Interesting take on it, but the gun looks bent. The right side and (his) left hand don't look perspective-correct. Reverse the curvature.
KleeWyck: background looks good but she looks like she's floating. Needs a floor.
wheezy: Nice clean outline. Body looks too long.
Franna: Awesome. Worked out well. Don't overwork it.
psantha : I've liked this throughout. The lighting on the book is very nice. No crit. Sorry ;)
Razorleaf: Scary and very atmospheric. It'll be interesting to see how you take it further.
Gothique: Liking this a lot. Needs more hooks and wires (maybe chains? but they are a pain to paint).
dose: Composition is spot-on. I'm sure you can get away with a cell-shaded look on this, maybe just vector fills, dunno. Would make a nice tattoo.
kurios: Need to see more :)
Pheike: Some environmental textures (stone floor, etc) could help dirty it up a bit.
MJ_Alcazar: No real criticisms on the outline.
dream_sear: I would say it looks flat if it weren't for the fact that it looks like a stylistic choice. Like a religious image in stained glass. Good stuff.
NicHolS : The books, the pages, the quill-fingers...the dude is a candle. Nothing else to say.
Tommoy: Very original take on him. Can't wait to see your final.
~baxter: Good clean stuff. Nice to see some line-work.
feifeicreate: How's it going? I prefered the one with the boobs tbh :P
daestwen: That quote needs to go in a speech bubble on your final :)
Ronpower: I love the sketch, hope you carried on and painted it.
Amber Alexander: Nice. Her right leg-to-right foot looks a bit flat. More work on the midriff to give it volume, but the image is a few days old, so...
audit: Good. Head looked a bit flat when you last posted.
Arthur 'Two Sheds': Yes.
darthmarsh: Are you finished yet?

Not much point in going any further back. Hope I haven't offended anybody.
