The Antarctican
May 8th, 2009, 08:30 AM
1) Blackcherry. I simply adore your entry. The pose is wonderful, the make-up on the face is authentic, the crumpled card is a great touch and the colours work well together - they don't clash and each tone just compliments the other. Also your costume is brilliant and it's beautifully rendered. Perhaps one of my favourite entries I've seen of any so far since I've been around here.
2)Daldbaatar. Suitably macabre and chromatically chilling. The skulls are a nice touch, lending the piece a nice horrific charm. A sweet mix of costumes and masques too. Great stuff!
3) Dreygus A different 'look' that lends itself well to the challenge. This feels more like an addition to a jokers masquerade ball and I like that. The character looks welcoming and mystical as though she'd lure you into making some sort of evil wish. Nice magical ambience to this piece.
Superb work again by all. This challenge continues to be inspirational.

1) BlackCherry - I completely agree with The Antarctican :) very inspirational. well done!
2) rvdtor - very elegant and unique but maybe the fabric on the sleves/body look a little unrefined compared to the finish of the rest?
3) albertocubatas - Very dynamic, clean and professional, For me the coffee cup stain detracts from it as I find it a little gimicky.
Good work everyone, see you again soon! :)

1st - rvdtor - Beautiful, I love the pose, colours and the moody lighting and the origami birds give it a nice finishing touch. Great job.
2nd - rostatron - Great stylization, like the facial expressions alot and the lion just creases me up.
3rd - Blackcherry - Lovingly rendered you can tell you enjoyed this one, nice work. The textured paper really sets if off nicely.
Nice Round :)

1.gnahz- it hurts the eyes a bit but the colors seem to work really well and the nice clean lines and shading makes it look the most finished. so you get mine!
2.dadlbaatar- a bit too over-saturated but excellent work on the face and really different approach. powerful image and the patterns make you look at it for a long time. the over-saturation kinda kills the realism but i'm sure thats what you were going for.
3. albertocubatas- one of the three to do the actual joker on the cards hehe, the idea slipped my mind and the coffee ring is just icing on the cake.. sharp lines, sharp shading great work.
i promised to comment on the others too :)
matoohani love your color choice its really contrasts the background, and i like dull colors too, interesting idea walking on the clouds with the hat extension things. i dont really understand but i like it overall.
GRMC great rendering in the face , the rest of the body is a bit rough and kinds looks unfinished but the overall tone is disturbingly intriguing.
Macarubahehe cute! i like the variety of the animals and their expressions...the rendering on the rocks, background and some of the animals looks a bit rushed.
KevinR i like the sketchy style and the poor itchy dog, took me a while to notice he was slipping on the poot.
cocou went a bit overboard with the soft brush there, hard to see whats going on and tho it does create a dark suspenseful mood, some sharp strokes in important areas like the face and weaponry would help to clarify.
Angel Intheuk his smile makes me smile and thats what a good jester is for...the background is really sketchy and looks rushed as you mentioned i think? aww will you finish it?
blackcherry nice pose, nice details, very whimsy, i like the face...there's a lot of white and makes the character kinda blend into the background. would have liked some more contrast, tho it is a white playing card hehe.
rosatron i like your characters and you set up a nice scene. but i preferred the more vector looking shading you had before to this more painterly look...the sharpness worked better with the characters i think. esp. the lion
S.C.P fattest jester on the block :) i like the expressions on the staff and on the little mouse down there but the main character and the background have similar colors so it kinda looks flat.
Dreygus very cool take with the magical jester. you're shading is all a bit too round not a lot of contrast with block shapes on the body. also the magic being that bright only lights her shoulder and the rest of the lighting on her body is orange so it looks unaffected by your main light source so appears a bit flat.
the original sean i like the linework , the symmetry and how you expressed the big smile with limited lines.
freddydark your faces are awesome very symmetrical and serious. there's not much variation in the brushwork looks mostly airbrushed but it gives a dreamy look and matches your concept.
atastrophea very dynamic jester, anatomy a bit wonky and i wish you'd polished it more. nice color choice in the background tho.
artina i like how clean your rendering looks, you define the planes on the face and hands really well in this one. the pose looks a bit simple. but those baubles on the hat look really really nice.
Dreygus

1st - Macaruba: Have enjoyed your style in the past, and can see this one required a lot of work and thought on your part. You bring something unique to this contest, and I admire that. I like the sharp color quality, distinctive lines, and fun, child-like feel to your piece.
2nd - Atastrophea: Really a creative work - the shape of the character, along with the face and small animal really struck a chord with me. This seems to embody the topic of "jester".
3rd - matoohan: Again, another imaginative take on the theme. I would never have thought to incorporate legs into his hat. Being upside down in the background, with him walking on the clouds was represented very nicely.
AngelintheUK - Good work here - my only regret was the lack of more detail in the background.
Rosatron - very comical - perhaps a bit more focus on the faces.
S.C.P. I enjoyed your take - he seems very unlikely to be a jester, and that's part of the fun! Good work on the lighting around the door, and your character design. Perhaps make the main characters head a bit bigger, along with more warm color to the flesh tone.
rvdtor - not sure what the white objects are, but stylish pose and subtle colors.
the original sean - I like this - the combination of shapes is compelling piece
Freddydark - such great facial work, but mystified by the story and the overly large figure in the background.

Here are my votes
1st. Rosatron - Lion bite Jester - Funny idea and great character concept with nice colouring
2nd. albertocubatas - Aces Joker Jester - Great character excellent line work, simple and not over worked
3rd. rvdtor - Bird Dance Jester - Lovely Drawing and a unique take on this theme.
Others in order of my preference:
artina - Foxy Jester Card - Nice portrait and textures, the idea is too similar to others
blackcherry - Jester Card of Hearts - Nice pose and excellent colouring, similar (as above)
gnahz - Robber Jester - Great character and lines, always recognizable with that colour, I suppose it stops you wasting time on actually drawing a background!
daldbaatar - Hell Jester - excellent expression and devil idea, should have had more emphasis on the character and less on the background
KevinR - dog doo jester - Funny idea though I was hoping the end result was going to be more refined. Lovely bright colouring though.
GRMC - sicface jester - creepy dark feel to this, good attention to lighting - great face
Dreygus - Masquerade Jester - Nice layering and brush work, good figure study
Angel Intheuk - Banjo Jester - nice character more work needed on the background though
matahoon - Flying Jester - nice idea and painting.
cocou - ominous Jester - Nice lighting and ominous character good perspective.
freddydark - Theatre Mask Jester - Nice portraits, I'd like to know the meaning behind this scene
the original sean - Graphic Jester - excellent shapes would like to have seen it coloured up into a full painting
Atastrophea - Balance Cat Jester - Freaky idea could have done with much more detail
S.C.P. - Fatman Jester - nice detail with the background and character, painting too messy.
Cheers

GRMC: I think your pic is definitely the coolest one there, but I feel it misses the point for the jester concept... The jester wasn't a prisoner to be made fun of, he was not only one of the king's court (which even if he was hired for his freakshow-appeal puts him in a far better place than most 'normal' people of the time), but he was also in charge of being the one to tell the king the truth.
In my understanding. Still true today, how comedians will say things politicians (and sometimes the media) won't dare to.
Freddydark; I really like your piece in terms of the jester but I don't get who the woman is. Probably says in the WIP thread, but I kind of value these pictures on their stand-alone ability.
So my votes have run like this:
1) Daldbaatar (sinister)
2) GRMC (awesome picture, I like the dark hints)
3) Atastrophea
Atastrophea; left hand looks wrong but I love the bizarre concept; dude out in the middle of nowhere dressed funny and doing acrobatics with a critter!
