...for roughly 200 dollars sans nibs, driver disk, and software DVD. After a chat with a Wacom customer service representative, I'm getting a complimentary software DVD (complete with licenses, I assume) and set of pen nibs. I feel like I got a pretty decent deal.
One problem remains, though: the lighter gray screen over the active area has come partially unglued from the tablet. What exactly is this screen for? Is it critical for the operation of the tablet? Recommended? What do you experienced users of the Intuos3 think (include self-repair options if you know anything about it)?

not exactly sure what you mean, but I think you mean the surface sheet. Yeah those are replaceable, I'd suggest replacing it ;) https://direct.wacom.com/stores/5/Intuos3_6x8_Surface_Sheet_P1019C65.cfm

I don't think it should hurt anything, unless the surface is not good to work on. It's meant to be replaceable, so it's supposed to come up.

The surface itself is fine (no scratches). The glue has come undone about half way around it.

When I had my Intuos 9x12 the only part of the surface glued down was the top edge after a while, it just meant I had to lift it up every once in a while and wipe out any dust or lint that had accumulated, so it will work perfectly fine.

Just the kind of thing I wanted to hear, thanks. I got my nibs and DVD in the mail yesterday or the day before, but I got my 96 piece NuPastel set, too, so I haven't gotten a chance to play around with it.

That's pretty sweet. I forgot to congratulate you entirely. I'm looking into getting a new tablet myself. I lost the pen to my old graphire about a week or so ago.

You are supposed to be able to lift the surface, that way you can place a drawing underneath and trace it.

My personal computer doesn't work so for awhile now it's been an oversized paperweight. I have considered throwing it on my parents' computer to screw around with.
