ROUND #156 :: JOAN OF ARC

DESCRIPTION

Jeanne d'Arc

Or Joan of Arc. Probably one of the most famous historical figures of all time, Joan really needs little introduction. But briefly: Joan of Arc was born a peasant girl in 1412 France and became a military leader who persuaded the King, Charles VII, she had divine right to expel the English from Northern France. After victories at Orleans and Patay she failed to take Paris and was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English. She was tried for witchcraft and heresy, and supported by a tribunal of French Ecclesiastics who were in league with the English, she was burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431 aged just 19.

But for further information on her there is always Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_of_Arc

http://archive.joan-of-arc.org/joanofarc_short_biography.html

One of the interesting things about Joan is we know so much about her, certainly after she came to the 'authorities' attention. In fact the whole of her trial is documented almost word for word. However, don't feel restricted to presenting her in medieval attire. Feel free to experiment with her outfit and time period but that is not a strict requirement. Interpret her as you will.

------------

ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:
1: DID THE ARTIST FOLLOW THE BRIEF? (allowance for creative takes will be made).
2: IS THE PIECE ARTISTICALLY SOUND? (Is the illustration "finished?" - did the artist pay attention to anatomy, perspective, other fundamentals?).
3: IS THIS ILLUSTRATION THE BEST ONE?

--------------------

SUBMITTING YOUR ENTRY:
1: You must submit ONE full sized image.
2: Make sure your name and CHOW # are EASILY READABLE on your entry.
3: Use the Standard format (Below);

:right: PLACE THE IMAGE IN A FRAME WITH YOUR NAME/TOPIC
:right: SAVE YOUR FILE IN THE FOLLOWING FORMAT:

THE REST IS EASY:
1: No comments before poll is set. They WILL be deleted with utmost malice and petty grumbling. >:{
2: Sit back and enjoy the show. BYOPC (Bring your own popcorn)
3: Good luck to all.

Please review these helpful reminders if you have not done so already.

Following the 38 year war of attrition between the European nations after the collapse of the EU in 2086, the Schengen Treaty of 2124 was signed to cease all hostilities. The war had left the western European countries unable to sustain themselves on their depleted natural resources. With impenetrable Russia to one side and the Atlantic on the other, the New European Council passed the emergency Act of 2126. This Act allowed for all of western European nations to individually invade or occupy the African continent in an effort to obtain the necessary resources to rebuild.
Unable to sustain a prolonged naval campaign circling the Iberian Peninsula to reach Africa, England requested permission from the French Government to cross to the Mediterranean by land with the promise of a large percentage of their new colonies' wealth. French Prime Minister Riberrie opposed this idea fervently and was subsequently overruled and exiled by the French Parliament. While the French armed forces were occupied with securing land in Africa, the British supply train which ran from Northern France to the southwestern coast, became more and more brazen in their treatment of the locals. Towns were sacked and French citizens executed without trial for alleged crimes against the British troops. The French government turned a blind eye to these atrocities as it found itself without the man power to react, and because it feared that if the truce with England was broken, France would have easily fallen given that it was effectively already invaded.
However, in a small town of the province of Lorraine, after witnessing the death of her family at the hands of a small British patrol, a young French girl named Joan took up arms in self defense and fought back killing the English attackers. Fed up by the state of affairs and inspired by this young girl's courage the townsfolk joined their beloved La Pucelle in her campaign against the British supply train. Steadily gaining popularity and support from neighboring towns and provinces, Joan began her quest to drive out the British troops and to restore PM Riberrie to the head of the Parliament.

She wears the color purple on her arm as both a rallying symbol and in mourning of her family and countrymen. And what French girl would be caught dead without her smokes?! eheh
I did this piece in one day, which makes me a winner to me ;D I like how it turned out, but due to other commitments I wont be able to put a BG on it.
Hope you like it :yayca:
Best of Luck to everyone!

As you can see from my WIPs I wasn’t really sure where I’m going with this.

My initial idea was to draw Joan in the battlefield in some sort of dynamic pose. While I was trying to nail the right body posture I was changing my mind since the posture I chose was also open for different interpretations than what I initially had in mind. So I was briefly tempted to depict Joan wounded, tense, desperate… I also considered replacing her sword with a halberd or a spear either as a thrusting weapon or as her support while she is trying to stand her ground or stand up despite being wounded.

While I was painting her face I tried using a reference and somewhere along the line I realized that all the cuteness of the original sketch was gone and I ended up with a shemale :-o

So I started from scratch and stuck to the original sketch.

I guess I don't even need to mention how thrilled I was when i discovered that she cut off her hair before going to the battle or something after I finished rendering her long hair... :(

The way how I initially envisioned Joan was her dashing at her foes but I meant to depict them as fumy, gaseous demons or specters, like something supernatural. The idea was to depict her enemies the way she perceived them as minions of evil.

Yet, when I started playing around with colors and layers I liked what I came up with by accident and decided to go with a more moderate approach.

I’d gladly go on explaining the process not because I like doing it or have something else to add but simply to bore out the admin so he would reconsider the idea of compulsory work process description. XD

Here is my Final, WIP and a close up of Joan of Arc. I wanted it to look like a french propaganda painting, Reminiscent of some of the famous Napoleon portraits.

There some influences of Lost plant, and the animetrix (The Second Renaissance part 2). As well as some others.

Hi : )
My first try to do a chow, and one of my first with photoshop as well.
I hope it'll be taken to poll, but not at all disappointed or surprised if not!
I've learnt so much in the process.

The flag drapeau tricolore isn't historical correct, but, well, symbolic : )
Hope I've done everything right!

I had some problems with the attachment uploader, tried to upload the file several (5, I'm slow) times, before uploading from URL. The window simply turned white and closed, showing a error message. I thought I'd let you know, if it's a general problem.

Thanks

First time I participate chow, so here's my final and wips
went for the more ethereal-everburning-spirit-aspect of joan.

I always thought there's a pic around the web, with Joan of arc with the tricolor flag, but it was too late as I found out it was a painting about the french revolution (350 years later) :), anyway, was fun to do.

I can safely say I hate coral painter 11 :404sign:!

My initial sketch was Joan in a futuristic scene on a motorbike, but since coral droved me insane I gave up, and this is what I have now. Also for some daft reason painter's added a border to the character and the outlines of some marker strokes when I resized it and I can't figure out why. :( ah well, my excuse is I only did it today :P! Anyway...

Hiya, thought it was time I joined in.

My original idea was that Joan would have been dressed in baggy, oversized armour that was originally mens, because her rise to a battle leader was so fast once she met the king. A side effect of this is theres not much to identify her as Joan or as a saint, so will bear characterisation in mind for the future.

On the plus side am fairly happy with how it turned out, lines and values seem good to me. Done in HB Graphite pencil (nothing else nearby).

Pseudo-Future Joan of Arc. I think I was a little inspired by the recent WWII challenge ^^ My Joan is a genius strategist who becomes the leader of a elite fighter squadron "The Archangels" at the mere age of 16.

It's not really done but I'm out of time so here it is, my first "finished" CHOW! WIP's just show how much of a spaz I am, I really need to nail down a consistent process ^^;

Ramza's was good, as were a number that were cut, however there are very clear instructions that we request people follow at the beginning of EVERY ChOW, and have been doing so for some time now. PLEASE FOLLOW THOSE INSTRUCTIONS TO AVOID DISAPPOINTMENT.

None of the organisers of ChOW enjoy cutting people, and if instructions were followed we wouldn't have to.

Maybe instead of announcing who you WOULD have voted for, please vote on the existing poll and if time permits, give a crit or leave your reasons why the artist/artists deserved your vote. I would have voted for JFK if he hadn't been shot!

ikuru, no one is saying that Ramza's image isn't kick ass (because it is), but asking 'why didn't such and such make it to poll?' doesn't help. Posh stated very clearly why everyone was cut.

Instead of making us feel bad, saying this would be more helpful: 'This is who I voted for: So, So, and So. Also, Ramza, your painting is kick ass.' That way you can still let Ramza know how much you appreciated his work!

There's a lot of great entries for this round, so it was a pretty tough choice to pick but I decided to keep my votes to three entries.

I voted for:

Arthemis IX: I find this design really striking! I love the stle of it too. The limited pallette and simple background really complimet the character.
No_Name_Brand: I loved this concept of Joan and her big kick ass mech! It also has a dark, moody feel to it which I think is really effective.
Rich_Lyons: Love the painting style of this one. I also really like the futuristic design of Joan's mech like armour and weapon.

Other entries I particularly liked were Icemoon's and dwinbotp.

There were very cool pictures, well done, well designed, and very original, so I thought on vote to the ones that could be more similar to Joan, not another woman warrior.
I voted for Mara644, Fjooner, Arthemis IX, Grmc and dwinbotp. :steph:
Grmc i think is the best idea, but needs more work on technique.
dwinbotp very cool use of colours, the expression help on the concept of a war for god, something bad for a good mission.
Arthemis IX I see a girl with ideals who have some doubts, but is still there, on the battle. And your technique is gorguerous :D very nice medieval design too

RLyons your work is may be the best on technique, is really a good one. I like the details of the cross, but i think it needs more to can regconize Joan. Anyway, congratulations for your very good job.
Emze and David Mcleod I liked your versions too, but i think she has got something diabolic.
