For pre college stuff see bottom of page.
Hey guys. My name is Jeff King, hence the screen name, used to have a name that soudned alot better when I was 12, but I'm going to stick with this one. :D
After some epic lurking, I finally decided to post a sketchbook! D:
I'm 15 and in Sydney.
Uhh.. I started I guess in December, as in, stopped with the manga crap (mostly....) and started learning anatomy and stuff.
So. I'm dumping my current sketchbook... It's A3 so pictures will have to do. :( Sorry.
Be honest.
Thanks

Yay, third(?) day on this site.
School starts tomorrow, yay.
Some more Hale of the arm.
SoM on feets.
6 - 30 second poses. You can kind of make them out now :D
And a charcoal attempt. It looks better far far away.
Should read more Loomis and stuff, huh.
How does one go about studying Bridgman?
`king
April 28th, 2009, 07:03 AM
77 - 30 second poses.
Hooray for not doing any holiday assignments...

Hey,
some nice work in here!
I like that you are trying some different stuff (style and shading)
but that you focus on the basic anatomy things.
Keep going! :)

there's some great poses in there, try & and put down more & more detail in those posemaniacs studies everytime.
Keep at it :)

April 28th, 2009, 12:21 PM
This is some great understanding of the anatomy.
Shading is nice,although I think,you should give more thought to the light sources,in order to get your figure looking really pro...
All in all,it's great!Keep it up!

Okay, so basically I woke up at 3 a.m. this morning and couldnt go back to sleep.
I checked my SB and was delighted to find posts that weren't mine! I sat there with a huge grin on my face. You guys made my day, seriously. Thank you so much.
@Jordan85
Thanks! :D Never have been called talented before haha.
@Eiki
Thanks :)
That means alot to me.
@DoubleThink
Really? :D
Will do! 30 seconds is just such a short amount of time...
@3vil
Thank you, and yeah I agree. Light sources tends to skip my mind. Will practice more.
edit: hmm it didnt post the rest of my message.
Attached are the poses i did this morning. Not very pretty, haha.
Hm, and a charcoal I started this morning and finished when I got home from school.
Trying to follow Loomis' book on heads, having trouble placing jaw when head is viewed from low angle. help?
semi-manga eyes are also haunting me.
cheers

Random charcoal thing. From imagination, trying to get light down, not working too well.
More 30 second figures.
Some studies, I guess, mainly the arm, with a different grip.
`king
May 1st, 2009, 08:26 AM
Didn't update yesterday.
Did a study on the pelvis in perspective. Really was having difficulty. Kind of got the hang on it with the help of some of Mentler's stuff.
More 30 seconds.
Today... more 30 seconds. Did one page in pen, just for the heck of it.
worked on the head. shading is bothering me. having trouble with noses and jaws. :/

Well day 8 I think.
Was at friends house yesterday. Its huge.
Not much done today either. Assessment block is coming up. Studying, kinda.
10 second pose warm up. Moved on to 30 seconds then ended on one minute ones.
Later tried again, but focused on emphasising gesture and rhythm and stuff rather than just copying it.
Random sketch.
Can't wait till I hit day 100. Almost a tenth there, yay.

Studying math is great fun.
Want to rearrange my room. Impossible.
Want a drawing board, this is an awkward position to be drawing in.
Didn't get to update yesterday.
Will start with SoM-Muscles soon. 2 more Hale lectures to go.

Nice start man, you're pretty good for 15. One thing I would say is to work on those eyes, I see a big manga influence : P Keep up the good work.

@jNeumann
Ahh. Thanks man! And yeah I agree. Not really sure how to go about eyes :P
Oki so, Some eye studies, because I had been putting them off for long enough. Some from imag. Also tried to put them onto a head, and I did a pretty good head! Like holy crap. It was a fluke, though.
Poses from ref
And some 30 seconds.

Yay update.
Exam block like almost over.
This is all my managed to accomplish in that time. shameful. ._.
Now that it's over with I can actually be productive with my time. Exams are so silly.
My grindfest rave etc weekend plans have been _destroyed_ by my brother. or more specifically his friend.
Anyway. That one pose is shocking, you'll see it.
Well, comments are really appreciated :)
DoubleThink
May 16th, 2009, 07:23 AM
Hey man, the poses are looking good.
Try & do a few pages differently, they will help you look at your subject differently:
-Do a few without lifting your pencil from the paper
-Do a few blind, without looking at your paper
-Do a few where you make circles constantly & you press down harder where you think the stress is on the subject.
e.g. the subject is down on his knees, the knees will be almost black & the rest should be lighter.
Keep in mind these are excercices. They probably won't look all that great.
But remember football players have to do excercices that have nothing to do with the game aswell, but those excercices do help them perform better on the field.
Also try some still life's: cubes, cillinders, ... easy geometrical forms & focus on the shadows.
Keep hitting it hard dude ;)

@DoubleThink
Thanks man.
Right after I read your comment I got capped :P
Keep forgetting about these. Really should try them. In fact I will!
Next update...
Just going to dump whatever I did in the past... 15 days or so. Uploading when capped is such a pain. Needing more internet.
Unrelated, but I seriously hate a couple teachers that teach art in the school. Soooooo fucking (excuse the potty mouth :P) patronising and arrogant. I don't even do art as an elective!
Anyway, so I scanned a bunch of the pages of doodles that I rip out of my books at school. As you can see, they basically reek of listening-to-my-teacher.
And occasionally I get charming addons or labellings to my doodles, lol.
Anyway! Comments are always greatly appreciated :D
Oh yeah, I'm thinking of taking some classes... and also thinking of where I wanna go for a tertiary education...

Yea exams sucks. I just had a whole month where i couldn't do art :(
You are really good for a 15 year old. The pose drawings are coming along fine - so keep doing those. The value-study is good as well - is it charcoal?
Cheers :)

Good stuff, your poses are getting better and your heads are improving fast. Much better than I could do at your age. You better keep it up! :)

June 1st, 2009, 07:13 AM
Great stuff, but try to get more accurated with the proportions. Perhaps you may try to use cylinders for the limbs and focus in keeping their size.

June 11th, 2009, 03:11 AM
@Fumble
Thanks :) (And yeah. Thank god their over.... Most. pointless. thing. ever.)
And yes, it is charcoal :D
@Liz Edwards
heheh :P Thanks!
@lennon
Thanks. and yeah you're right. I'm annoyed i didn't think of that earlier
Okiedokie. *tried* some of the stuff DoubleThink suggested...
Umm. I filled my sketchbook front-to-back for the first time! Yayyy.
Anyway, didn't get much time to update because of an english assignment (and also partly because I'm rather lazy.) which I've attached. It's meant to be a visual representation of the poem "Dolce et Decorum Est" by Wilfred Owen. I rushed the coloring. (It was two in the morning!)
And then another page of doodles.
:D

Yesterday's update.
Really should do some of my own stuff, like complete works n stuff.
Thinking of attending pre-college online at Academy of Art University :)
Need to learn plane-things of the head.
`king
June 19th, 2009, 04:40 AM
Yay! Attending precollege! :D gonna be heaps fun.
I picked: Intro. to Illustration, Comic Book Illustration, Graphic Design and Figure drawing :)
Anyway, I should update daily but cbf scanning. A pile of crap always seems to build up atop my scanner...
So, just some more 30second poses. I reached 200 Woot.
And a koi. Dunno why. I really need to draw more stuff from imagination.
Oh and a sphere, for the peer project thread..which I'm probably going to end up not posting the thread...
Anyway, comments are always appreciateddddd. :D
Thanks

Your off to a good start man. Gesture drawings are good to learn gesture. I heard somewhere that you learn anatomy like proportions and such from books and your sketchbook. It's good that you have discipline from the start it'll really carry you far. Remember that Perseverance is key. I look forward to seeing more of your posts. Happy drawing :)
I took AAU Pre-college online too last year. :D Helps the growth a lot. And your charcoal renderings have improved vastly and rapidly.

Amazing man, your really improving. Remember the foundations from AAU, it'll really take you far. You've improved so much in a 6 week period.
For your digital portrait. It's really good for some practice. Remember your proportions. All of your proportions are correct, except the lips. Just make them a little bigger. Besides that it's way better than my first digital painting.
The figure drawings are really taking off. You should look for some local drawing groups or something.
As always keep on drawing from imagination and life. Your really doing an awesome job. :)
