View Full Version : Red X in FF/main page

Not sure if others are seeing the same thing, but most of the stickies in the FF section are showing up with little red Xs instead of thumbnails for me (using Internet Explorer). I think there's one in the SB section as well. I've seen a number broken thumbnails in other threads as well, but the stickies in the FF section are the most noticeable since they're right up at the top.
Anyone else catching this with their browser?

Thumbnails are showing up for me in both sections.

Have you cleaned out your temp files in a while?
Often it happens that a broken image link will still show up locally on account of the image being in your temp files, only to go down as soon as you actually need to download it again from the url. This happens to me with imageshack quite frequently.
This is why a lot of times people won't realize that they're sporting a red x, until someone else tells them, or until they clean out their browser, or they use a remote comp. Easiest way to check using IE is to go to: Tools > Internet Options > Delete Browsing History > Delete All (with 'delete files and add ons' also checked). That brings you back to a virgin browser, which shows what things would look like for someone coming to the website for the first time.
When I do this, I see a bunch of Red Xs where thumbnails and such used to be, which is why I thought I should post. Figured it might be worth checking into.

I cleared out my cache just to be sure, and the thumbnails are showing up for me.
I'm not sure what is going on. Have you tried different computers or different browsers?

I haven't had a chance yet to try from another location, but I'm going over to a friends later so I'll have a look then.
Right now I show the same thing happening for IE and Chrome. I tweaked with the cookie settings to see if it might be that, but even with no blocker up I get the same deal.
The threads I've seen so far are:
Chicks who draw chicks
Last man standing
New Rules
Editorial
A search for Genius (in the SB section).
When I right click properties on the thumb and try to follow the link I get an invalid attachment specified message. Not sure why though

Was there any dns entries that have been modified in a while? It could be that if there was such a move, people with high TTYLS for their ISPs could be getting an old version of the site. Basically the provider caches the IP address since people aren't moving their domains too much. Some of them cache it very high. If the dns isn't in line with the present entry, you're getting dead links instead. This may be true if storage of images are done on a different server than just the forums.

I'm thinking it must be as you say, because now all the thumbnail galleries at the head of the main page are showing up red X. Defnitely an eye sore.
Is it something I need to change on my end, or something with the website?

I've had the same thing for a day or so.

The gallery thumbnails will for me now stand there loading for a little while, and then they'll just disappear one by one so it's only the blank and "you can be here" ones that's up there.
It was working fine yesterday... You guys updating anything?

Any word on on a possible fix for this yet?
The red Xs are easy enough to ignore, but they're also adding about 30 seconds load time to every page, as opposed to the 2 or 3 seconds it usually takes, since it always tries to bring up the gallery thumbs first. I haven't noticed any effect on the attachment manager or advanced editing options, it just takes a little while longer for everything to load up. It does drag the casual browsing down to a real snails pace though.
