Hello everyone. this thread is really only relevant to Australians...

I just finished my HSC this year and got a UAI of 93.40, which gives me a fair few options. As a result, i need to decide on the best course to choose in terms of working towards concept art.

Im a NSW resident, and its too late now to feasably move interstate, so my current applications are:

Bachelor of Design, Paddington College Of Fine Arts (COFA, UNSW)

Visual Communication, UTS

And some other arty courses, and architecture.
I know Feng and others recommend Industrial Design, however australian ID courses all seem very product related (ie design a fire hydrant, design a new school locker system etc) - - they may help, i dunno.

Im wondering if anyone knows of any good NSW courses to do to work towards either film of video game concept art.

The COFA B.Design has an ok reputation, however the majority of people say it is too broad ie you dont focus on one thing, u do a whole lot of different subjects ie digital, sculpture, printmaking, casting....which i dont really wanna do....i want to do a purely 2d course that will set me up for concept art.

Any ideas? Im getting desperate and time is running out so please even if you just know sum1 who can help, reply :D thanks everyone

Nice UAI. Beat the shit out of my 63.xx (can't remember as I didn't care :P).

Maybe you should actually look at doing something a little different to what you like to do. I went to the AIE in Canberrra, and I found that it really helped out my 2D art a lot. Making 3D characters really helped me to understand what is able to be made in 3D (so you don't draw what can't be made), and my knowllege of the human anatomy improved hugely.

Otherwise any other form of design may help (ie. Graphic Design). I never looked at Uni's when I left College, so I can't really help you out with that.

Anyway, good luck and best wishes with whatever it is you choose to pursue.

After reviewing my choices im leaning towards a Bachelor of Digital media - which teaches animation, digital imaging, drawing typography and composition, graphics and reactive modelling, multimedia authoring, object-oriented programming (wtf is this??) sound studio, storyboarding, video, web authoring, writing for digital media.

My career path i wanna folo is sorta like this (inspired by happy campers suggestions)

20's - Animation, advertising, garphic des stuff
30's - Special effects and animation for films
late 30's - Art director/lead artist
40's - Film Director

What do you guys think?

I personally did Visual Communication at the University of South Australia. It is a good mix of illustration and graphic design and you can do life drawing :)

The only thing I found is that you have to take the initiative to try and work digitally whereever you can as the course doesn't really focus on it, but they shouldn't stop you from working in that medium.

I now work as Creative Director for infinite Interactive which involves plenty of concept art and illustration.
