I'll attempt to use this thread in the same way that I use my blog (http://mr-november.blogspot.com/) but for more rough work which, in theory, means that I'll be updating it much more often. We'll see...
Some pages from my moleskine...

Work in progress for my character project. This one is a wraparound book cover. The guy's face looks stupid at the moment, but I'll sort it out...
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o250/Larkin2/Salesman.jpg
The first is copied from 'The Fall' by Tarsem - one of my new favourite films, I highly recommend it. The second is from Band of Brothers, which is also genius...

you have a ver strong sense of design and setting which show in your more stylised stuff. Your noses aren't very convincing though. With the placement of the base being the main issue i think.Have a quick looks at some facial structure writings. I use Loomis, alot use bridgman.
DannySketch
April 28th, 2009, 06:05 PM
Nice stuff finny boi
Gotta agree with kyle's crit, your basic structure is slightly off on some of your faces, but that'll come with practice.
Leyendecker studies are lovely, that man was a god, you could always take a stab at oils?:P
Finn Diesel
April 29th, 2009, 02:00 PM
Smarty Yeah, I think I can generally draw facial features ok, but getting them all to work together in a normal looking face is pretty hard! Haven't done any life drawing in ages, but getting an anatomy book ain't a bad substitute I guess. Cheers.
Dannysketch Thanks, that Leyendecker sure was one talented son of a gun. Try Oil painting? Never! Well, maybe... but me and painting go together like flies and honey.

DStrax Thank you.
ajvenema Thank you. Yeah I'm starting my Illustration degree in September. Quite exciting! As for the neatness, that's just a style choice. I usually don't like the messy stuff I do, and it invariably ends up getting rubbed out or binned.
TheButterBunny Thanks. Most of the moleskin stuff is from references, so its not that original, but I'm glad you like it :)
Here's another spread (values were added in Photoshop).
I was going for a Joao Ruas (http://souvlaki.jp-ar.org/) / Audrey Kawasaki (http://www.audrey-kawasaki.com/) look for the second one.

I'm a little ashamed of myself for producing so little work these last few days. I sprained my ankle playing football on the weekend and spent a couple of days watching it swell up and go all sorts of colours. Despite my best efforts though, I can't use this to justify such latent behaviour on the art front. Some of this is new, and some of it is just stuff that has been sitting around waiting to be developed.
Another Leyendecker study. Pencil this time, not so adventurous...
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o250/Larkin2/Leyendecker.jpg
Another tree. I don't usually like my looser drawings. You won't see many.
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o250/Larkin2/Tree.jpg
Reminiscent of the 'Stone Gardens' from the Edge Chronicles...
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o250/Larkin2/StoneGarden.jpg
A self portrait.
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o250/Larkin2/SP.jpg
One of the character pieces I have yet to develop. A long time ago I read 'The Alchemist' by Paulo Coehlo, and to me this guy seems to represent one of the characters from the story. If I had a lightbox I'd enlarge this piece and tidy it up James Jean stylee, but I don't, so I'll have to find some other way of doing it.

Gah dude I freaking love your designs and enviroments, you ever tempted to paint one of these up digitally?
Your characters and 'people' are prob your weakest front, the line quality lacks the same sort of confidence, originality and love that you give to your designs,
Take a rest on the ankle mate, those peasant dwellings wont invade themselves...

love that little true in your thumbnail, got me to click into your sb, haha

keep at it sir

Dannysketch Thank you. I've shaken off my crutches at last, so Falmouth better watch out! Here's a digital environment piece for ya! - some generic spacey architecture. Average.
serhc Thanks for looking. At least the digital stuff stops me obsessing over linework! I'll keep that in mind about the looser stuff too. Cheers.

I really like that last enviro. I think it would be even better if you added some waves to the water (right now it gives a very static sensation, it could be sand from a desert instead of water) and some darker shadows on the tower in first term, to separate it more from the background. Anyway, nice work so far!
Keep it coming :)

Cacodaemonia You're right, my drawings of faces do look a bit odd. I find it a bit difficult to get them right when I'm drawing so small, but its more an issue of practise. I'm glad you like the tree/throne picture though, I had fun with that one.

yo jim recommended i check ur stuff out, ive been pondering starting a collaborative blog for illustration students of 09-12 from around the uk or maybe even broader. anyway i thought it would be good to get into the habit of mutual critting so....
ur sense of perspective is rly strong, shines thru in all those enviros ur doing. imaginative landscapes, but what i would say is try to mix it up now, theyre starting to look similar. try warped/fisheye scenes, angles from worms eye view, or just something challenging. and maybe a bit of stuff in the extreme foreground to push more depth into it. ur figures ar e abit weak in comparison, just something to work on. but u have a nice illustrative style developing and i can tell its gona be something special. peace

Love the floating house! The bizarre, Escher-like angles work well with the orange circles - I guess they both lend a surreal feeling to the image. :)
I noticed that the anatomy in this image (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o250/Larkin2/Blood.jpg) looks pretty stiff. The guy laying on the ground, in particular - his thighs each look like they're different lengths.

Another page from my moleskine. Both drawn from references. The faceless guy on the left is some Moroccan chap, wearing probably the most awesome robes I've ever seen. So good that they warranted biro action. The woman on the right is some other random I drew from an old photograph. I added the coloured background just to make it a bit more interesting, but now I realise that she just looks like an orange squeezer. Oh well.

Hey, thanks for stopping by my sketchbook. I really like what you have going on in here. I think my favorite one is this one (http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o250/Larkin2/25-26colour.jpg). I like how the tree roots wind up and down and connect into the house, and the piece overall has some cool shapes going on.
In regards to what you mentioned in my sketchbook, I agree, i should probably take some of my paintings and take them a little bit further. 98% of them were done in one or two sittings because past that i start to loose interest or forget my original idea. It wouldn't hurt to force myself to finish one off, cause i never seem to. If i do i'll let you know. Thanks for the suggestion, it's definitely a good idea.

The man vs. machine idea is really clever, but there are a few anatomical issues with the boy sitting on the ground: it kind of looks like his neck is nonexistent, and his leg should curve up more because the femur isn't straight across; it kind of curves inward, meaning the knee should be raised up more than the rest of the thigh.
Keep it up!

p, sage and rvaisman Thank you!
Cacodaemonia Thank you. I'll keep that in mind with the next studies I do.
Kim_bot Thanks for the tip. I'm not much good at anatomy, so I need all the help I can get!
I've finally started my Illustration course! This was the induction project; to go and draw a place in the high street. In the end they were all linked together to form one long map of the town...

If you want to have a good time and practice drawing the human body, why not go to a strip club for men with your sketchbook?
If you are going to try this exercise please make sure you are over the age of eighteen.

Love that building! What a cool project for your illustration class!
Nice details in the pencil sketch - I love the fence post. :) The coat folds need some work, though, as does the woman's arm. It looks very stick-like right now.

rvaisman Er... that sounds a bit sleazy for me.
Cacodaemonia Thanks. It was quite a cool project to start off with. I'm juggling so many right now I think I'll need to work all weekend. Woe.

These are really nice! I love the variety.
The straight-lined, cartoony look of the big tree in the first one is very different from the rest of the painting. Are you planning on outlining the other objects as well?
Finn Diesel
November 2nd, 2009, 01:09 PM
Cacodaemonia Thanks. I started with the drawing of the tree, and then painted outwards. If I decide to digital paint over it, I think I'll outline and define the other elements, but I'm not going to touch it any more in the sketchbook.
Here's a forest piece I started a while ago. Currently working on a digital painting of this...

Sweetness. :) I think I like the top version a little better, since it kind of feels like there's some fog in the air. I think you should darken the foreground to the level of the second version, though - more contrast and sense of depth that way. Maybe a mixture of the two? Also, the smaller exit sign is less distracting. What else...? The guy with the lantern doesn't seem all that scared to me, perhaps because of his posture. Oh, and to make the forest more creepy, why not add some creatures lurking in the shadows, eyes peering out at the lantern-holder? It's a bit cliché, but it would certainly get the point across.

Cacodaemonia Thank you. Those are some good ideas. I think I'll try mixing the two variations together, and see what I can come up with.

This is a plan for a piece that I'm working on. Go to my blog (http://mr-november.blogspot.com/) for more information...
http://i122.photobucket.com/albums/o250/Larkin2/AOTFOS-plan.jpg
This is a character I did a while ago. He's a sort of armoured/cyborg/egyptian. I really don't like drawing default science fiction, so this was a bit out of the ordinary. Looking at it now, I really don't like it at all. But since this is CA, I thought some people might get a kick out of it...

Nice Composition and concept, I love the way you carve out trees. The text needs work though, it jarrs with the rest of it. Maybe have them hanging on un-rolled scrolls off the tree?xxx

Really nice sketchbook! Keep at it!
The only thing I'd really pick on right now is the anatomy of the arms. Practice drawing the arm muscles as well as the hand. It'll really take your art to that next level!
Finn Diesel
November 23rd, 2009, 03:12 PM
Smarty Cheers. Yeah, in the final piece I'll do the type by hand. This was just to see how it could work across the page. The scroll idea is quite interesting, but there's quite a lot of text, so I don't know if it will work. Might give it a go though.
Monkeydominator Thanks. People are always ticking me off about my anatomy issues. I'm really not much good at drawing people I'm afraid.
One of my class projects was to illustrate a quote. I chose "the Thames is liquid history". I tried to show various eras, events, and landmarks appearing across the city of London over time. I don't know if that's clear enough or not. Its not supposed to be a map, so maybe the paper texture was a bad idea...

Hm, yeah, the boxiness of the legs in that character sketch does feel a bit awkward. I like the head-dress thingie, though. :)
I like the London image! I painted that spiral building once before, but I think yours looks better, hehe. The illustration gets the quote across quite nicely, I think. The paper texture may not have been the best idea... Or maybe use it on the left, and slowly fade to something more "modern" looking on the right?
Finn Diesel
November 24th, 2009, 05:40 PM
Cacodaemonia Thank you. Yeah, that's not a bad idea, but I haven't got any ideas of what to do with the right of the image though. I didn't need to create a fully finished piece for the project, and now I'm onto other work so I may not go back to it now.
These are a couple of older pieces. Really old in fact. I haven't done any serious digital paintings in a while, but I thought if I put these up it might motivate me to get back into it.

Hi Finn,
Great work here, Love the left picture on post #56. Your pencil work is beautiful, I also like your work with blue , it really accents the main subject. I enjoy how you experiment. I would like to see more pencil work, it just feels more 'raw' to me. Your shading is great, and you're very good with drapery/clothing.
I can't give much advice, other than maybe work on your landscapes a bit more (foliage, rock formations etc.) This could really add to your environment pieces.
