----
Hi there!

What I'm doing in a nutshell: I'm traveling around the world freelancing (on my new-ish tabletPC!), sketching, seeing great things and meeting awesome people.
Here are some small, badly photographed, not adjusted, sketches made during my travels.

Currently i'm in New Zealand hanging out in Dunedin. (if anyone is even slightly interested) I'm traveling in a van with a random person who gave me a lift (turned out to be a very cool German girl). Great fun!
Anyhow, before you get to bored of my BS, here is some small stuff. Hopefully I can post some commercial stuff later on.

Thanks for watching. Cheers,
David Smit

Great start. I'm especially digging the panoramic townscape. Be careful with the hitchhiking in foreign countries, that sounds like a pretty bold thing to do, haha.

ChristianShane: Thanks! The panoramic landscape was for a client. Great assignment where I visualize the level/color use etc. Hitchhiking and joining random pickups for rides is the way to go man, the best way to meet real and interesting people!

Zenobia: Thanks, it's good to hear you like my characters!

Obstbrand: Большое спасибо (in case you can't read russian, like me, translation: Thank you very much!)

Hardedge: Thank you my friend. It's great to allow yourself to sketch whatever. Just see where it ends. (almost always in a monster or a girl.. hmmm)

These aren't really sketches, but to give you guys an idea of some morning views when waking up in a Campervan.

Small update artwise: didn't have that much time lately (quite a sorry excuseswhen your traveling.. I know...)
But some small sketches.

Still in NZ, Chrischurch atm, missed my flight back to Australia.. and no real idea what i'm gonna do now :) (travel further I guess.. harsh life..)
I'll put up some photo's and more sketches soon.

Cheers,

the drawings are lovely but i was hoping to see more observational stuff when i saw travel journal... and those photos are breathtaking.. i've been wanting to visit nz for years

DavidSmit
May 17th, 2009, 03:16 AM
amarryth: Thanks. Yeah havent really gotten to observational stuff yet. Sound weird, but even with all the time in the world to do art, sometimes other stuff goes first. It's on the todo list though! Bought Watercolors for it. Never did it before, should be fun :)

Here's a new, or old one painted over. Not really a sketch anymore, but more of an experiment I guess.

cheers!

Hey!
Here's a small speed paint demo I did for Ethereal studio a while ago. Took about an hour or so. Fun to do!
When there's some more light tomorrow (I hope) I'll make some photos of the new sketchbook. Finally started experimenting with water colors.

Hey David,

How are you doing? Found out about your blog lately, and was really awe struck by your beautiful pictures. Damn, wish I could be there as well :D

Lovely SB you got here, still progressing and developing a very unique style there. I still got a hard time painting and getting my values down, wondering if you could give me some tips? :)

Have a safe journey and have fun!

DavidSmit
July 9th, 2009, 07:22 AM
Thanks guys! It's great to hear you guys like it!

Tom: Hey buddy! When I get some time on my hand i'll go over to you SB and have a look. At the moment things are crazy. Just arrived yesterday in Hanoi Vietnam, ofcourse got drunk and was hungover today. It's a mental city thats for sure. But it's going to be home for at least 3 months. I'm doing a job here as Art director. Cool project. Should be great fun. But busy busy.
What I can say now is: if you have problems with the values: look better or probably look more. Try to break it down into 3 value blocks, after that break it down into 5 etc. Get the major values down first and make sure they are correct before moving on.
but i'll try to give you some more personal things soon!

didnt have that much time to do stuff, but here are a few things that are lying around.

P

Tom van der Linden
July 9th, 2009, 07:58 AM
Thanks dude, that would totally rock if you could give me some personal pointers! I'm doing a lot of studies right now, just trying to figure out a lot of stuff. Still struggling with PS but that'll come eventually I guess.

Also watched the Workshops of Ian McCaig and Bob Kato, really inspiring stuff. I've also read the craig mullins document you've uploaded in Swendly's SB, and it was very instructive and inspiring.

By the way, you just fly in and get to work as an art director? You got to have some great connections :D What's the project about? Or is it NDA?

Good luck and godspeed!

July 9th, 2009, 08:03 AM
i digged this sb from the beginning

hey the robot concept is simply great, awesome. the sketch has so good storytelling

Tom van der Linden
July 9th, 2009, 08:06 AM
ow, and some great sketches in the last update! The "rubble tech" creature looks a bit heavy on the front side, a bit fickle on the rest, but I can imagine how it would walk around the streets, hung forward and scouring the streets for more "rubble"? A well forget that :P

And the hippy tank girl is of course classic and is a great contrast :P My feeling tells maybe her right boob hangs a bit too low, not sure about that. And maybe make the tanks more angular, to enhance the contrast between "peace" and "war" :D

Met my team today. It's going to be interesting since I don't speak a word Vietnamese and they barely speak English. I'll probably get a translator. I'm really excited about the projct though, it's a great project and we are going to do some awesome stuff. You'll see when I can show it :).

anyhow, here's another random sketch I did. yeah another robot, dunno, like robots atm. Girl sucks but whatever :)

August 13th, 2009, 04:37 AM

Teun: jep, I'm afraid I'm addicted to travel, art, alcohol and whatever local stuff they have to get you going!

Here are two more. One is the secret agent image done for CGSociety. I'll post some closeups soon. It didn't turn out as I wanted it but ah well.

The other one is a just freshly published old picture :). From the newly announced PS3 downloadable game GreedCorp by W!Games in Amsterdam. I made that one a few years ago.

I get frustrated to often by my lack of certain knowledge. So, back to school. Time for some studies and research of the fundamentals!
Still a lot of stuff wrong with these, but just started again. Especially the portraits need some more lovin'. But it's not the time for that. First the studies. Lets see how things go :).

Great sketchbook!

Are you still trying to get used to the ol' bump and grind after such a long trip on the road? Know how ya feel...being on the road for so long seems like that's the right way to live...and after coming back you start wondering why you didn't just keep going. At least you have some cool memories and pictures to show for it :)

Hey guys!
Jep, still trying to get used to the slow life again. It's tempting to run away again, and go to all the places I didn't visit yet. But I decided to go and work on a freelance career a bit. To give the slow and productive life a shot (at least for a few months :P)

Anyhow, here's a small update from the market image. I'm already working on a new big expansion of that image. Should be fun.
http://www.davidsmit.com/sketchbook/TheMarketExtended01.jpg

And a new sketch for the Band I'm working for at the moment. Still a lot of stuff to be done on this one though.

Thanks a lot guys!
Here's some more awkward shit for ya!

Me and my GF have been sketching and swapping drawings every 10 minutes or so. We're having a BLAST doing these. So much fun. Kinda brings back the whole joy and reason we'd started drawing in the first place. These are the results. There's moar over at ours special dedicated blog. http://beetjelastig.blogspot.com/
Also check out Nadia's own awesome stuff at:

I love the fact that your brushstrokes are so crisp and strong, it makes your art really pop (whatever that really means - it pops), like in the Team Chow guy in the wheelchair. Your use of colour is great and I love your stylized stuff, too. Subscribed, for sure.

Great stuff mate! Good to see you posting again. I just checked your blog a couple of days ago. The orgie piece is really good. I hope you finally started to draw from life again. Drop by my sketchbook when you have some time to spare I could really use some crits especially on the color stuff. Keep it up!

because of your style you are deforming the anatomy. and it looks cool, since you are familiar with what you are doing. Just keep it up!
