View Full Version : Ode To Productivity: Sketchbook

I am lazy. So I'm starting a sketchbook thread to help fight that. I get frustrated very easily too, so bad drawings get me down. Well the one way to fight bad drawings is, as we all know, draw a lot.
SO - I'm going to try and use this thread as one inspiration to draw more - hopefully everyday :)
Here are some things you guys have already seen, but I'm posting anyway to get the party started. I'll add recent stuff as soon as it's done and scanned.

Love the cyborg-type treatment of the David. Great sense of proportion and they all have a lot of personality. Bad drawings get everyone down from time to time, but I hope the inspiration's there for you more often than not!

awesome work kress, do you use life drawings as references for any pieces? Or all most of them just out of the head?
Kress
December 27th, 2003, 08:13 PM
Hesse - thanks man. Hopefully an art director will think so too :P
AttackCat - I've never gone back and used my own life drawing for ref. The angel at the top is from life, and I just added the wing. Usually my figures are out of the head, but I do use ref - the technoPrincess was done with ref, and obviously, a little imagination on my part.
Thanks though :)

whoa... WHOA. Damn killing.people... Your paint-over is raw!! And I'm ecstatic someone jumped on my invitation so soon. I love the fleshy hilites. You totally captured the nasty dead-flesh feeling I was imagining (and attempting in my lame color-over). His right forearm is a little "anatomical" but the texture on the metal and the blue on him is sick...:p
Trust me, I'll be looking to that metal when I'm painting my own stuff.
The bottom of the gun is a little unclear but I think that's the drawing :( Anyway thanks a ton for doing this, real inspirational... you're quite welcome to do more. Glad I motivated you :)
jester - I don't mind you repeating things :) hope you come back.
DragonGX - thanks man trying to get over some stiffness with this thread.

Hey Kress, just want to mention you are one of those people who inspires me to work on sketch book. I like what you draw especially the creatures. You have a good way of creating the forms with just your line works and minimum shadings. I always need to spent time render just to bring out the structure right. Hope to see more. :)

hey all - just wanted to drop in and say that I HAVENīT forgotten about this thread, but Iīm traveling at the moment and canīt scan anything. Iīm on a little post-school trip and Iīll hopefully have something decent to share when I get back in a couple weeks. Believe it or not travelingīs kindaītiring :p
lavhoes - thanks fer stoppinīin.
metalwinds - thanks bro. and donīt trip about not leaving a crit, there are so many things I need to work on that Iīm sure I could give you a bigger list than you could give me. a general reminder to just "keep going" is often enough
steak-tron - first of all, nice handle :) Thank you much man. glad you caught the little thumbs. get to drawing, itīs what weīre all here for, to help eachother get going. god knows that i get intimidated on this forum.
hereīs a couple somethings thatīre kinda old and you might have seen already, but Iīll post anyway since I wonīt be home for so long. Hope you guys like ém.

Oh and by the way, I know itīs kind of a privilege to get to travel, but anyone who wants to be a good concept artist needs to get to Paris at some point. All I have to say is Musee De Orsay and the motherfucking LOUVRE, but more on that when I get back.

Well I'm back home. Europe is a very good place for artists. And while I didn't sketch from life as much as I would have liked to, here are most of the things I'm willing to show from the last month. It's been so long since an update I'll try to make it worth your while :)
Thanks to the guys who did paint-overs! n0fish the sunset idea is perfect for that pic, I like how brilliant you made it. I'm not sure it's done either, finish it and post!!

n0 - glad to be back. like I said, trying to use this thread as an excuse to draw in my off-time. Most of the sketches were done in pencil, but see above reply also. The landscapes are hi-tech Cs.
Rusty - glad you like it man. It's a shame we haven't seen any new stuff from you dude..! Hope to see some soon, hope you're not too busy to draw :( - I didn't get my tdome thing done cuz of being outta country and all. The deadline was like the day after I got back :P

Hot damn! Some of you peeps are so friggin' inspirational! Makes me want to explore with different styles, which is always a blast. I love your pencils, they just kick too much ass. And your designs in general are totally doin' it for me! Please, post some more ass-kicking! I love it! Peace

Holy smokes - wtf is going on here? Shawn, that paint-over is simply awesome. You brought so much life and "oomph" to my drawing - It really makes me think I need to paint them more often, I hardly ever see potential like that when I look at my ownsketches!! :p Deep thanks for the inspiring contribution, the colors and style are soooo nice.
Jon - Thanks so much for stopping in again. Every time you reply to one of my posts I'm rejuvenated man. I'm flattered to know they are of some inspiration, truly. And hey, you post more too!
Cheers all - thanks again. Be back soon with more crapola. :chug:

i think it's a fantastic piece. i loved the drawing when you first posted it, and i think the colored version is looking great.
i see a lot of painters start by throwing in a neutral value background to set the mood & value structure, but what do i know... it's looking awesome anyway.

hmm..
I think it ROCKS! Value and details seems to be nicely balanced out, though some areas, like the staff, could have been a a little more refined. Anyway, I`m sure you are aware of that.
BTW, are these actual pixels?

Wow Kress, this stuff is really nice. What impresses me the most is the sheer quantity of unique ideas you come up with. Do you have any strategic means for inspiring your ideas? Any good sources you could share? Or are you just that good?;)
