Thought I'd start up a sketchbook and coerce myself into posting daily.
First a bit about me:
My name's Levi Gilbert and I'm currently a student at MATC, majoring in animation with more of an emphasis in illustration and concept art. My main goal is to be hired as a concept artist by the end of next year.
You can check out my art blog at http://bluefiasco.blogspot.com
Thanks for viewing and don't be shy; leave some feedback.

you definitely have an eye for gesture~!
and you environments are very stylized, im not seeing much real world observation in them, thats not necessarily a bad thing, but i always find that its nice to have something real to connect to

What were the times on these? You've got some very nice lines going on - getting some nice overlaps showing form etc, and it's clear you've got a relatively accurate eye, but there's a lot of white space going on that makes the drawings feel a little timid. There's so much more that you could be describing on the inside of the figure, in line or tone, that I think would make them pop a bit more.

Your anatomy studies are really nice, try taking it a step further and render them more fully :)
Keep up the good work :D

cae: Most of them are around 15 - 20 minutes. My figure drawing instructor doesn't want us doing shading yet because we're going to scan them and shade them in photoshop. The longest time we'll have a pose is 40 minutes. Usually it's less though. I need to get faster :D
Iddi: Thanks, yeh i definitely need to do some finished work.
Update on one of the environments. Still needs more detail and need to make it a habit of using reference...

Hey man, you have great stuff in yer SB.
The landscape in #31 looks a bit flat (the grass area) and the way the mountain peaks out of there looks unnatural, I would expect some highlights in the water too.
Keep at it and show us more!

Your line quality is awesome man, they're so confident and expressive! Plus your proportion seem to be pretty much spot on every time. Colour me jealous.
I know squat about environments so I cant be much help there, but I'm loving the whole layered shape thing you have going on with the non-organic elements.
Maybe try doing a fully rendered drawing or finish a painting? Would be cool to see what you can achieve
Welcome to the group man, I'll try to be more constructive next time

Welcome to the SSG!! I like your stuff. The abstract style paintings and environment ones are really cool.
Is that back torso study of the muscles from Paul Richer? I'm working on drawing back muscles of the torso and it looks like the reference I'm using.
Have you seen the weapon design video that El Coro did? If not then I think you'd like it.

Thanks! I'm really trying to work on my speedpainting/environment work. Yeah it's the Paul Richer anatomy book. I forget then name, but its a red cover. Awesome stuff for anatomy. The weapon vid with the guns was pretty cool. Coro's pretty funny at times and definitely has some great tips. I should check that one out again, havent watched it in a while.
Speedpaint for tonight. Roughly 2 hours so far.

good stuff dude, my only crit would be that all your environment painting colors are pretty dull, you should add some lively color in a few of them nature is rich in colors! might just be a personal thing but i think it would make your enviros stand out more with some more contrast.

Hello there, first of all those blue pencil sketches are beautiful!
With your pilot guy, I think his arms are looking a little long atm, and also his shoulders are unusually narrow. Actually, looking at it again I think his arms look long because of his narrow shoulders. The drapery looks great though, you really seem to have an understanding for how cloth behaves.
That first head sketch is great to, got some real character to him, and great lines!
Peace

Hey there,
What Danlambert said is true :) But i think there is also a bit of a problem with the size of his head :) remember that a standard is 8 heads..
So get a look into that :)
Those sketches with the blue are really great :o
They look awsome tbh, and the way you made them fold is just great :)
The face with pen?.. is rly cool to!
I hope to see more cool stuff in ur next update man!
Good luck!

Hey man Good update here!
I think it was mostly becuz hes so tall and thin, and with a helmet on..
Its like he has no neck or that his shoulders are rly high, but thats not possible cuz his hands end at a relaxed height.. I dont know if im very wrong, somehow it feels weird to me..
If you disagree then, no problem at all! :) I still think the design you made for the guy is rly cool.
Those flying machines you designed look rly awsome.. that rusty look is rly cool on the second one :)
I can only say,, More! :) Keep drawing! GOGOGO! :D

That pilot gut is coming along great, although I agree with Roger about the high shoulders, it almost looks like he's shrugging but his arms are at a normal relaxed position. The vehicles design looks great, maybe introduce some more materials just to break up the shapes a bit more, will also allow for more textures.
Peace

I agree with what roger and dan said about the pilot guy. Another thing I noticed is the cloth in some places needs some work. If you look at his right forearm area, the jacket beneath the bracelet things is a perfect cylinder. The cloth would probably at least bunch up a little. The straps on his pelvic area looks like it's not that tight, especially the back view. Actually, I think most of the straps need to show the cloth raising up around it to look like they're strapped tighter. On the guy's right leg for the front view, I think since it's bent forward there would be a little bit of stretch folds coming from where the strap is. I could be wrong though, since I don't have reference or anything. It would be nice to see more with the boots, like some zigzag folds on them or something. A really awesome way to show how cloth is behaving is to add some clothing seams on the arms/legs, but I'm not sure if this outfit would have seams like that. I like the seam on the shoulder area.

Great speed paintings le capitan. Your texture and environment work is looking solid. The only suggestion I have is to maybe experiment with color saturation. It seems like you are using variation in the warms and cools but I think it could be pushed. Keep it up!!

I havent actually posted in here yet, which i really should :P.
Some really nice work mate , The digis are coming along pretty nicely and you seem to be on the right track with everything.
I suggest doing some photo reffed colour studies, as your colour schemes feel pretty dull.
There isn't enough subtle hue shift in it

Love that bearded dude in the bottom right, although you're getting a lot of character in all the faces. I think I said this before but you have a really sensitive line quality when you sketch in pencil, I like it! Would be cool to see more.
