"This pictograph was found near an archaological dig site in venezuela, which had penetrated almost 6 kilometres into the earths crust to find the cause of some strange seismic and radioactive readings. The site mysteriously collapsed almost eight hundred years ago, killing or trapping almost all of the researchers on the project. Coming to light only recently, the NUN have decided to begin a massive project to uncover whatever it is this image depicts."
An experiment with bad quality jpg settings.

Here is my first submission. It was a quick sketch on paper. The cave decends downwards. Comments?

Hope the loose work doesn't make the image confusing.
Vijil -I like that look. I'd like to see what it looked like before you compressed it.

Finals are finished. Good to be back. Tough getting into the groove again, considering that I haven't drawn anything for 2 weeks. :(
And I haven't posted comments for even longer! Here goes:
Carnifex- Looks like the objects are emerging from the darkness, nice feeling
vijil- nice b/w, I think that jpeg low quality helps give it that "old" feeling
topsecret- welcome to dsg! I like how you treated the cave, but if I could recommend one thing, it would be to fill in the rest of the inside of the cave, so that the un-shaded person will pop out against the dark wall of the cave.
awalloffire- nice textures and sepia colors. I really dig those sepia colors
kexe- I like the effect of light on that one, pretty cool.
odd- sweet. I tried to do mine in the vein of your painterly style but it looks like I've got a long ways to go :D
elekon- I like the camera angle, but I wish the character could read a little clearer as it seems he/she(/they?) are blending into the floor
hungerartist- I am really digging the brushwork on the left-most tree and I have no idea why :D
sabre- I like that robot, looking forward to the finish. (Is your capslock key on, btw?)
plaf- quite nice anyway, interesting idea with the letterbox format as well

I don't know about you but the ruins of Petra in the country of Jordan have always fascinated me.
My DSG today was referenced from a couple different photo's of a specific ruin in petra. All the photo's had a really bad perspective :| , So I changed it a bit.

So I thought I'd give this regular DSG thing a try instead of just lurking since I've got a month with no classes. I didn't realize how much I missed sketching until I did that Aphrodite yesterday, and I could use the practice...
Didn't have as much time as I'd like because I was doing the Christmas thing all day, so please excuse my cheap filters. Wish I could write comments and all, but I've got a mountain of presents yet to wrap so all I'll say is that there are some really cool takes on this theme today.

SABRE - It's okay if you wanna post in caps. I think Oregano's just jerkin' yer chain. If that all-caps thing is your modus operandi, please feel at ease to continue. ;)
Sorry Everybuddy for not participating lately... I've been sorta depressed. I'll pull myself together shortly, though.
Nice werks y'all.

This is a quick one from a thumbnail. More editorial than having to do with today's topic but decided to post it nonetheless. It is rough and could use some, er, refinement.

Other thumbnails/ideas included a wedding chapel, a Ford/Chevy dealership, and Shea Stadium (no offense intended but it is true).

Toaster -- I like what your doing in painter
Avalos -- this is strange to say, but I'm really moved by your picture...it must be the cat!
ihatecompulsiveliars -- a lot of work in your world. I found myself walking its paths in my head
TopSecret -- welcome to DSG! I'd love to see that shaded -- it has a lot of possibilities.
All of the regulars are doing awesome things with painterly textures. Thank you, Hunger_Artist, for sharing some of your techniques...I love multiply! And thank you again to Idiot Apathy for keeping me on track and posting -- your PM box is full, I can't send any messages.
PS- very eerie effect, Paper Slayer

Thanks TopSecret and Miau. I have to say though that everything nice about the picture came from the tips of others -- people who were kind enough to share how they made things happen:
dagreengo -- he shared the technique of making a straight line with the PS paintbrush by starting at one point, then shift-clicking another point. Granted, I guessed at a vanishing point, so my perspective is pretty jiggly
bkmini -- he told me about color dodge. All of the green is color dodge -- as I layer on, the color gets progressively whiter and I can concentrate the brightest part where I want. That made the glow.
Hunger_Artist -- he shared his use of the Multiply setting. As I layer a mid-ranged color on that setting, it gets progressively darker. I used to go to the color setting every time that I wanted to change value; but now I can get a wash effect without having to stop every two minutes and resetting.
Now...I can't wait for oDD to open up and share! *gets his notepad ready*

I'm late on this one, I was just going to skip it and do today's, but I still am in desperate need of work on my environment sketches so I figured I should go back and do this theme. It's for my own good! :) So here's a quickie.
