View Full Version : P.O.W.! Challenge 23--Warriors Never Cry...

P.O.W.! Challenge 23
Deadline: Sunday, May 10, 2009, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.
Topic: Warriors Never Cry...
This one is a bit more specific, but I think it leaves enough wiggle room to go in a lot of direction. Those of you who like battle armor and Frazetta-type characters, have a ball. Those of you who don't, show 'em how it's really done. :P You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color.
You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a tentative maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts
Standard Comic Book Size:
--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)
This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.
This one is three weeks rather than the usual two weeks to see if it will allow more participation or just cause a lot more procrastination. I'll decide afterwards.
P.O.W.! Challenge 24 will be posted before Sunday Midnight, May 10, 2009.
A little note here for all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges...thankyewthankyewthankyew...
Just a reminder--those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, or ran into deadline problems, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

Three words, and three words only;
I. Am. In.:yayca:
April 21st, 2009, 11:09 PM
i'd like to give this a try. need to get into the practice of panel-work.
April 23rd, 2009, 05:32 AM
I am finally set up so I can be in. I even have an idea. Whoo!
April 26th, 2009, 03:42 AM
I have about 80 hours of nothing to do. I've already done the sketches. My advice to everyone else who can.... do the sketches, no matter what. It helps get your speed up for later stuff.
The Warrior Never Cries...
Instructor: "Osu! Today we will test your Ki. Your spirit will overcome the body. This kettlebell shall represent the pressures of life"
Instructor: "On your knuckles! 1/3 down! 1/3 down! 1/3 down!"
Student (thinking): I can't hold on!!! My whole body's giving out.
Student (thinking): I have to move find somewhere in my mind to escape thi-"
Instructor: You must have zanchen. YOUR MIND WILL REMAIN! The warrior does not give up. The warrior does not fail. The warrior does not complain or cry.
April 26th, 2009, 09:22 PM
DeuceRok: Wow, that's already looking pretty good, can't wait to see the finished product.
April 27th, 2009, 07:30 AM
This looks really cool. I agree Kmadden, DeuceRok looks really tense, like it.
Will attempt a go, just finishing the stylized challenge, so might not get very far with it :D
April 28th, 2009, 12:25 AM
When you spend 6-13 hours a week in the dojo, you had better learn that the warrior never cries!
Inking is coming along. Looks like it's gonna be tri-chromatic since I don't have any painting skills yet. (Black, Dark gray, and light gray)
I'll replace the sketches as they're completed.
BTW! If anyone's wondering what a dojo looks like or wants to see stances/work check out: www.bushinkanwilliamsburg.com
One or 2 of the guys might look familiar.
April 28th, 2009, 08:19 AM
i hope it's not just too late..
I'm in guys!!!
April 29th, 2009, 08:01 PM
greetings P.O.W!.....and fellow CA members. it's has been one of my life dreams to make my own graphic novels....(who am i kidding that's everyone's life dream right!?) my goal is start working on one this year...so i figure what better way to get practice and feedback than p.o.w!
comments critque and trash talk are most welcome!!!
the ugly hoard of bandits hover around the house howling smelling fresh flesh inside. baby cry's mother becomes alert
the mother try's to defend herself and child but get's impaled in the process
the bandits grab child to strenghen their numbers...or too eat
ranger returns home with fresh kill.. dog barks ranger is suspects something is amis rushes to cabin
they've taking everything.....his peacefull life is over. oh! what's this ranger wasn't always a ranger he was once a great warrior....time to lace up...
becuase warriors don't cry they go out and kill things!!!
obvisouly it's rough....trying differen't things with pages no dialogue boxes yet but i'll get there!
April 29th, 2009, 11:02 PM
Hey homies, I've never entered any of CA's weekly challenges, but I'm thinking I'm gonna make this my first. It's finals week, but I think I'll be able to make some time. :)
BTW, mine is probably gonna be 6 pages. Just wanna make sure that this challenge is definitely making an exception to the 4 page limit in the Read First thread.
April 30th, 2009, 06:29 AM
theoryC: Welcome to the fray, friend!
May 2nd, 2009, 05:39 AM
I believe I can actually do this!
May 4th, 2009, 04:25 PM
I am emboldened to produce one of my more abstract/poetical efforts for this one.
May 4th, 2009, 11:02 PM
Inking is the bane of my existence. I think I need to sketch even more loose so that it's not so damn tedious. 2 pages of 5 are "colored" and inked.
I have a strong feeling that I'm gonna get beat like a naughty little circus monkey, knowing who else does these and seeing the other post so far. (=D)
May 5th, 2009, 07:24 AM
i guess i'm doing something wrong...... sorry!!!!!
May 5th, 2009, 09:59 AM
Hi J.S. Basically some of us have been very busy over in the team CHOW that just got done and really had no time to check in here. Ilaekae will be back soon, so look busy!:ilaekae:
Your action seems packed in kind of densly. Will you have many words to insert? I guess you will have room enough as long as nobody has a lengthy soliloquy.
Some mild trash talk at third parties: A lot of people who talked before are now hiding because they have realized this is hard and they are hoping nobody remembers they said they would do this. You're working hard and that is probably further intimidating them.
We are all having fun in here. It is a welcome sight to see all you newcomers. I am pretty sure Ilaekae will not have a problem with six pages, theoryC. Keep working hard and don't wait until the last day or something will kick your butt (whether it be inking or lettering or coloring).

May 5th, 2009, 01:39 PM
Thank you, Arttorney, as always...
Everything looks like it's coming together nicely. My apologies for lack of response for the last few days. Like Arttorney, I was sucked into that fiasco Daes' staged in CHOW to humiliate all of us :P...
I'm hoping to have mine in this one, too, if I can pull it off in time.
For those of you who have questions on pages--I have a minimum and a suggested maximum to prevent people from biting off more than they can handle. If you have the confidence to move further, do it. I'd say that ten pages is probably the absolute maximum that we'd accept, and even then, I've made exceptions.
Also keep in mind that you don't have to complete the entire comic start to finish. You can submit 2 to 6 pages of a much more complex idea that requires more pages to finish, as long as we can get a feel for where you came from and where you're going. I've had to hold a few of mine back because I have a tendency to end on a sight gag, which only makes sense if the entire comic is up in some form.
If you're short on time, you could show pencils on a few beginning pages finish three or four in sequence, then finish with a few more pencils to finish your idea. We don't have to have a complete finished comic to go to poll, just something that makes sense to the reader and has at least TWO finished pages for final style.
May 6th, 2009, 05:00 AM
Of course it doesn't HAVE to be finished!! It's more likely to WIN though if it's done though. While winning isn't everything. The process of completing is important!
BTW my next one (after this) is going to me massively cartoony, so I don't have to spend so long inking! Yes, I know I constantly complain about this, but it's because i have yet to find a quick method that matches my style.
May 6th, 2009, 03:32 PM
Just finished finals, now I can start finally start working a bit more on this. I may try watercolors. I'm about to head home from school, so I won't have a wacom anymore, but I've been wanting to do some watercolors anyways..
May 7th, 2009, 07:46 AM
My version of a Teaser.....
Page 4 of mine underwent significant changes while I was working on it. The previous pics weren't interesting enough to me. I think you'll agree that it's significantly better.
Overall, the process got a lot faster tonight. Even though I took lots of breaks. I got 1.75 pages done and ready to go.
My current goals:
Fri - Text/Post
Sat (day)- Critiques??
Sat Night - Post
May 7th, 2009, 09:52 PM
I'd like to give regular detailed crits in here, but haven't had the time since I'm working on a beast of a GN with a tight deadline. I will say this, though. Make sure it's clear what's going in each panel, and in what order to read the panels, and who's talking. Also, the strength of the drawing is really important, so just like in any other type of illustration, you're often going to need reference to do it right. Proportion, anatomy, and perspective need to be correct, or at least convincing and consistent. Sabastian, your panel borders are getting lost, make sure they're clean in the end.
I applaud anyone who takes this up; it's a lot of work.
May 8th, 2009, 05:09 AM
Hey Mickey (or anyone else who also finds this relevent) P.O.W. is hard because it's such a lengthy process. It's not just throwing a character down with its own nuances, but it's about creating a story, characters, organizing that story, and doing all the general art stuff on top of that. It's cool if you don't have time for it all. I think those who do get a chance to finish still appreciate the critiques. (I know I do.)
May 8th, 2009, 11:41 PM
Mickey walks the walk, so it's sad if he is too busy to talk the talk.
As for me, I've been drinking, I'm on the internet, and I'm not afraid to burn your eyes out with my entry tomorrow. (Let men fear!)
Seriously, I'm trying kind of a new direction with this one, and anyone who has seen some of my prior stuff knows how scary that is.
May 9th, 2009, 12:19 AM
Seriously, I'm trying kind of a new direction with this one, and anyone who has seen some of my prior stuff knows how scary that is.
Drinking and drawing.... this could get fierce.
May 9th, 2009, 05:06 AM
people drink on this thread i have found a new home! yeah!!!:mittenbop: :vodka2:
May 9th, 2009, 06:50 AM
You can't be a tortured artist without a little booze.
OK, so my "art" is done. I just have to do letters and words.
I hate the fact that you can see my transition and learning over the course of this piece, yet I'm still astounded by the changes in 5 days.
May 9th, 2009, 06:15 PM
Yeah. So I am kind of terrified of this open line minimalism stuff. Maybe I have good reason to be, but I kind of liked how Jackson came out.
May 10th, 2009, 04:46 AM
I am totally proud and totally disgusted by this comic. It's my 1st shot, so I'm stoked to have completed it. I'm disgusted by parts of it:
1. All the perspective errors
2. Lack of deep coloring
3. Weak anatomy in parts
4. Weak fold/fabric design
Overall, I guess I'm happy with my product. I hope Most agree.
May 10th, 2009, 06:05 AM
deucerok!!! you rock.comics in general are sold as a whole....i'd buy it...if you kept the story line true to the game!the thing i hate about CA is almost everyone you encounter here is a nay'sayer.
Mickeymao..... no offense but the majority of comics i grew up with perspective, anatomy. correct preportion. didn't really happen all that much....if ya know what i mean.
May 10th, 2009, 06:30 AM
as my first PS> comic thread i am happy all though i can see why the traditianal way's are superior when it comes to line work and such i also recognize the work put in to it. to be honest i'm tired of working on this shit!...whatever....bitches...
May 10th, 2009, 07:06 AM
J.S.: Solid work man. The script leaves a little to be desired, but there are a few panels here that I'd like to point out as sheer brilliance.
1. The top of page 1! Awesome start!! The characters feel gritty and the juxtaposition of color for the beasts/ogres/outcast orcs in the cold outside with the warm colors used on the inside are excellent! The perspective on the latter half of the page needs work in that it needs a more aggressive/dynamic styling. It reminds me of an example in 'How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way.'
2. The bottom of page 2 is fantastic. Great composition! The upper left is a great drawing, but I might have liked to see a stronger demonstration of uncertainty of fear. Also, you had a lot of great ideas, but they're really compacted.
3. The upper right and bottom left are great panels. The figures communicate well. The confident stride in the upper right, along with the uncertain, but strong entry in the bottom left. The faces leave a lot to be desired here. I might even recommend their omission in the upper left hand corner. His calling upon entry is pretty suitable to pique his interest. This would leave more room for his reaction shot to be fleshed out.
4. I like this panel because shows the warm home turning into a fiery hate. The dead woman in the upper left steals this page for me. It's well worked out. I would have recommended centering this and using the whole horizontal length of the top to really draw this out as a pause. This would help the reader by emphasizing the loss. A longer panel = longer time for the reader's eye to transgress the page.
5. The final is the final page... I would have liked to see either of the following: More of him burning his past//Arriving at the camp of the Ogres. It would have left me with a stronger sense of closure or an anticipation to see what this character would do to the beasts!
Overall: Your panels flow consistently. Except the last. What I mean by this is watch the progression that your eyes take as they're taking in the story... it's always a Z path. Your lighting in at times is really inspired. Great Work!
May 10th, 2009, 02:44 PM
dude that was freak'n rad thar be a grin on ma face thanks g'
May 10th, 2009, 03:05 PM
Welp, it isn't finished but I think you can get the idea clearly enough. Plus I kind of like the looseness working so quickly gave the whole thing... Anyway here it is!
I'm not sure how that last page ended up so small. :C
May 10th, 2009, 04:07 PM
Oh cool! A third entry so Ilaekae won't have to take my lame entry to poll if he doesn't want to. I like that we are getting all these new people.
May 10th, 2009, 07:04 PM
Artattn, it's not lame. It's solid. I'm going all cartoon on the next challenge. You inspired me to deviate from my classic style.
May 11th, 2009, 12:45 AM
My first POW challenge. God I'm glad that's done with. Ha ha. Challenge really is the right word. This is ridiculously hard.
May 11th, 2009, 03:05 AM
Beautifully done, everyone. I'll have the poll up tomorrow, AND will have a poll up for the LAST challenge, because it got left in the dust by my being humiliated by the CHOW team challenge. :P
New Challenge will also be up tomorrow afternoon...the subject/title should give us everything from schmaltz to horror to work with...
May 11th, 2009, 04:02 AM
dude i am so confused right now! i feel like i just walked into a bad plot in the middle of a shitty movie. what got left in the dust?and what does c.h.o.w! have to do with p.o.w!-oh yeah by the way i'm drunk off my ass! not that it matters...every other asshole got a
"thanks" by the thread leader just for saying they'd try the challenge but me....i guess that makes me the un-thanksed asshole......i'm going to go cry now in a dark corner and burn cigerrate holes in my arms!!!!!! i'm just joking..but seriously i see i perhaps spent way to much time on this than neccesary:(
May 11th, 2009, 08:03 AM
J.S. it took me FOREVER to get this thing done. I had to take 2 weeks and like 25 hours to do mine. Yeah... I know... it's sad, but my photoshop skills are SLOW! Don't sweat spending extra time on it. some of us work faster than others.
I definitely won't be able to give the next one THAT much attention. I'd probably be a bit faster if I worked in value, rather than line. I've always been more of a "draw-er" than a painter, so an unbounded shape is hard.
May 11th, 2009, 10:53 AM
What Ilaekae is saying is that he was so busy participating in a contest in another subforum that he neglected to put up the poll for POW 22 and now he intends to correct that little detail while he is making the poll for this the 23rd POW. Do not attempt to adjust the dials of your computer screen. Ilaekae is now in control. (and yes it was kind of humiliating over there in CHOW, but at least I'm used to it.) If you want to be humiliated, there is a big contest in IDW right now that promises to be intense. Gaius and Hideyoshi will draw circles around everybody in the Dracula's Castle EOW. Pick your poison.
People go ape over the detailed style. J.S. Don't stop pushing hard just because you've gone farther than the others. Go even farther. Do two or three pages rendered out superbly and next thing you know you'll be too busy with freelance work to hang out with us anymore. I think you could profit by doing a drawing or two for the "Official Draw from What Does Everybody Look Like Thread" stickied in the lounge. Slash has that kind of viking hairdo thing going on and so he would have made a great head study for you in preparation for working on your main character.
I'm an asshole and I don't think Ilaekae thanked me. I have to go back and check to see if I'm offended. (Edit: Yeah. No thanks for me.)
Oh. Don't burn your fingertips, J.S. You'll need those to sign checks with.
May 11th, 2009, 03:03 PM
i wish i could say that my head hurts but it doesn't....thanks for that explanation arttorney and confedence in my artistic abilaty's it means a lot...duecerok your words and and efforts alike....thanks.

May 11th, 2009, 06:07 PM
May 11th, 2009, 06:13 PM
Ha ha. They probably need to develop one of those ignition interlock things for the internet.
May 11th, 2009, 06:13 PM
HAHAHAHA!! @J.S. The anonymity of the interwebs!
Where's Ilaekae's entry? Shennanigan (I know that's wrong... don't remind me)? It's too bad Grief is off for the time being too. I was hoping to take down old guard.
May 11th, 2009, 11:15 PM
J.S., you either do POW! or you fuckin' drink. You can't do both till you're over fifty. I know.
Deuce, I ran into a a problem last minute and couldn't finish, but your ass is mine on this next one. I'm starting tomorrow, if you think you got the balls to take on an old yippy cartoonist who's gonna ream your butt from here to Saturn... :P
New Challenge is ready to post. Polls will be up in about 1/2 an hour.
May 12th, 2009, 01:21 AM
if you think you got the balls to take on an old yippy cartoonist who's gonna ream your butt from here to Saturn... :P
It's On Like Donkey Kong, in a thong, playing ping pong, against cheech and chong, whilst singing a song, and drinking something strong!
I got the balls to take you on, but not the brain or skillz (yes, that's skills, but with a Z).
December 19th, 2009, 04:14 AM
