ALEX KRILL'S SKETCHBOOK

MY GOAL IN THIS SKETCHBOOK IS TO

1. IMPROVE MY KNOWLEDGE OF ANATOMY.
2. CREATE A STYLISH WAY OF APPROACHING A PEACE THAT LENDS ITSELF TO DRAWING LIVE.


I just got back to Norway after travelling around the USA and attending the Reverie.
Thanks to everyone involved for a great time and a massively inspiring event. Seeing the mind blowing work
at Reverie also got me extremly motivated to improve, and post my stuff on this forum.
Feedback is both welcome and desired!

During the portfolio reviews, Lorne Lanning, El Coro, Marko Djurdjevic, Andrew Jones and Whit Brachna all said they
liked my visual style (with a possible exception of Whit Brachna) but that I need to DRILL ANATOMY. I have been thinking about doing this for several years, so here goes...

Good studies here :) What pulled me over to your sketchbook was your first colour life images and how they reminded me of Juan Uglow. Great style. Looking forward to seeing more.

Nice feet! Those 2 pieces in your first post are awesome, really show signs of the style you're talking about - they're pretty stylish. :) Good drilling on anatomy so far, keep on drilling. You'll find the gold.

Hey, Alex! This Alex#2! Nice to see your sketchbook. Your digital figure studies done at Reverie are my favourites, especially the very first one. You got everything right, me thinks....all the information with the simplest of strokes. Awesome. More, dude! I post all my new stuff to my sketchbook, so check it out, and some to my facebook. DIGITAL PAINT EXPLORATION:

When painting traditionally the brushes/palette knives make unique textures and shapes on the canvas.
Without texture brushes, digital painting lacks this random and unique quality. I see a lot of people have
made great texture brushes lately. Here is a set of 7 I made for exploration...

GOAL: A good mix of digital and organic patterns with a messy, play full feel.

- The scribble patterns are inspired by Fvallejo's sketchbook (great stuff here, check it out!)
- The panther and blood textures paced together from images i found with google image search.
- The paint smears are from cgtextures.com - probably the best free texture site on the web.

After importing the set to Painter 11, I did a quick test:

Then I worked for two hours straight on another hand study. Basic strokes in Painter and some
textures and final tweaks in photoshop.

And some more digital experimentation. I really get a kick out of drawing these quick digital images. could probably get as hooked on doing them as gamers get on World of Warcraft, just drawing till I collapse on the floor
from lack of food or sleep. I want be able to work faster and more precise, blocking in the forms without sketching them first.

I have been observing camera effects like blurs end depth of field. I'm going to figure out how to work them into my painting technique, so that rough/unfinnished areas of the canvase look like they are motion blured or out of focus.

sweeet stuff ! yeah thats that anatomy book by some guy named civardi right? i had that for a while,but i had to return it to the library then whoever the next person was who borrowed it lost it X_X. anyways, cool stuff man. more moremore! the digi experiment stuff is turning out nicely
