ROUND #156 :: Joan of Arc
DESCRIPTION
Jeanne d'Arc
Or Joan of Arc. Probably one of the most famous historical figures of all time, Joan really needs little introduction. But briefly: Joan of Arc was born a peasant girl in 1412 France and became a military leader who persuaded the King, Charles VII, she had divine right to expel the English from Northern France. After victories at Orleans and Patay she failed to take Paris and was captured by the Burgundians and sold to the English. She was tried for witchcraft and heresy, and supported by a tribunal of French Ecclesiastics who were in league with the English, she was burned at the stake in Rouen in 1431 aged just 19.
But for further information on her there is always Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joan_of_Arc
http://archive.joan-of-arc.org/joanofarc_short_biography.html
One of the interesting things about Joan is we know so much about her, certainly after she came to the 'authorities' attention. In fact the whole of her trial is documented almost word for word. However, don't feel restricted to presenting her in medieval attire. Feel free to experiment with her outfit and time period but that is not a strict requirement. Interpret her as you will.

you would not be considered a fool to think it's space marine joan, but it's not - it's steam punk joan of arc. I figured that every man and his dog will produce a scantily clad joan so I'm going in the opposite direction with the least form fitting suit of armor known to man, it's practically a mechanical fat suit!
This is an initial sketch if anyone is keen to critique anatomy my ears are well and truly open, let me have it!

My idea was a future Joan of Arc guided by the spirit of Joan of Arc of the past. I'm still working out the idea but here's a design sketch to start with - I'm glad I'm getting a little faster at this, maybe I'll actually finish this one *crossing fingers*
-I tried to incorporate the Joan of Arc cross as well as an overall larger cross into the design, I also gave her a fur hoodie that I thought could lightly hint at a "halo" as well as be a reference to Joan of Arc's beginnings as a simple farm girl (sheep's wool).

Nice topic!
Can I do a peice of her tied to the stake, about to be burned?
It's an open topic, so yes. Just be 'respectful'! :) As for cleavage, that too is up to the individual artist. Joan dressed as man probably for two reasons, practicality and to avoid male attention. In the end it was a contributing factor to her eventual execution.

Yeah, but we're allowing a little artistic license on this one, so it isn't a sticking point. :]

she did not pretend to be a boy in the battle:P

I'll go for something like this if I have time to finish. A really lousy sketch and an even lousier photo of it but my scanner died so... I made a mistake of not planning the armor beforehand so it sucks pretty much now, but that's the pose I'm going for.
As for the crits...
kisou - a pretty nice sketch, looks like her arms are a little longish though. I like her hair :)
Airborne - oh wow, that's one huge mother****er! The gender is not really visible yet but I guess that'll change once you develop it further
KleeWyck - I like it because she looks pretty gentle, love the face :)
-HAWK- - nice one! her lower legs look a bit short and weak when compared to her thighs though, but I like this one :)
Lt Action - nice armor! watch the balance, she's leaning over to the left a bit
Amber Alexander - right now, the lower abdomen + crotch is what's bothering me the most, it's too small, you just have the waist and then the crotch right below it... See the relation here

good luck! :)
dirkvandulmen - that's a mighty pose! I like it
Pixeltuner - not much to crit right now but I like what I see so far. Love the armor :)
daestwen - as much as I can see, nothing wrong with it :) I'm interested as to where you will take this one :)
Baxter-E Oh wow, that's LOVELY! My fav so far :D
t i m - tha face is lovely, I hope you get to do the rest of it
RichLyons - if I made out the pose right that's a mighty sword man! I like it so far, can't wait to see the progress
That's it, sorry if I misspelled anyone :)
EDIT
lkjhgfdsa - you snuck in while I wasn't looking :) That's an interesting armor but watch the balance, she's leaning to the left a bit

I know we're not going with a strict adherence to Medieval attire, but how strict are the guidelines when dealing with age? Because, for a girl who died at barely 19, I'm seeing a lot of hawt young women figures who look more like they're 25 or older.
She was a great heroine and general, but she was still a teenager. ;)
I think I may have to try and take a crack at this one, though I'm quite busy this week (damn you, finals!) if only because the picture I have in mind seems to be rather different from everyone else's...

I am a beginner, but, well, we all have to start somewhere...

redrew it. but i'm still not happy with this so i'll probably change some stuff digitally for her design and add some feet (my sketchbook page ran out at the knees)... as for the wings, they are more a metaphor for the extension of the spirit than a practical means of flying... those wings would be too pathetic to realistically get that weight off the ground anyways.
i've never been capable of drawing/painting realistic and practical armor so for this chow, that'll be my goal.

Hey all!
first time in character of the week, i hope this works out well :D
here is a rough idea, 3 hours photoshop. I messed around like crazy with all kind sof stuff, however i seem to be staying with the same old brushes all the time, darn i need to test more brushes.
I went for the classic setting, middle ages, i think this suits the character most. And i wanted it to get pretty nasty and bloody. The armor i invented is far away from known frnech armors i think, i based mine a bit more on barbaric older typed armors just to give her some more woman touch. But i'm having my doubts about this, it doesn't look right, so i guess i'm gonna change it to some kind of elite more closed armor. I'll see what happends after more testing and thinking.
critics are welcome of course ^^

SkooterNB: Be careful with your anatomy here - it's kind of all over the place. I suggest either taking a photograph of yourself in this pose and using that as reference, or finding a few photographs in similar poses online and figuring out the anatomy from there. Anatomy is really really important to the quality of the image - if your anatomy is really far off then you're likely to get cut. Also, be careful, she is very masculine right now, especially her face - if i didn't know who she was already, I would just assume it's a guy. :]
Evil comrad: Same crit as above, be careful with the anatomy, as right now it's off. Again, I suggest photos, or even asking one of your female friends to pose for you to get the anatomy down.
IKII: I like her face and expression a lot, but her limbs look very very uncomfortable. Try taking the pose yourself and see if you can hold it for more than thirty seconds - I'm not sure I could! Maybe it's because the legs are positioned just a little too extremely? (Angle wise, i mean) Or maybe it's just the arm holding the flag - why would she hold it backwards and upside down like that? As soon as she stood up, the flag part would point to the ground.
Jadishe: I hope you have time to compete! Right now the sketch is looking pretty good - her upper arm on the right (her left) is a little bit thin and I think her head's a little big but she's got a nice face.
SkooterNB
April 22nd, 2009, 08:39 AM
daestwen: Yeah, I'm going to work on a different pose, more sad and cartoonish. My anatomy is getting much better in my sketches its only transferring that from real life to imagination. I should get a sketchbook started here so I can at least show that I can draw people!! I think I will definitely use a reference photo until I can get anatomy down from imagination. I'm doing about 2 hours a day of figure studies, so It is getting better. The other issue of mine is color- I've always been a black and white person, as well as using pencil/pen/charcoal and paper, not my new tablet.

Thought I'd go for more of an action pose for this one after a fair comment that My last (and first) Chow had a wee bit of a static pose. I'm also trying to hold back on the feminity. She was a warior after all. And aparently one of her crimes was dressing like a man.
I'm currently playing about with the armour at the moment.
Crits are more than welcome. They are infact needed.

She was officially executed because of the cross-dressing, but this was largely just to have a reason to execute her, because the whole trial was apparently a sham and they couldn't really find any evidence against her. Most of the time she wore male clothing to avoid being molested. Which really just makes sense, when you have one teenage girl in an army full of men.

I preferred a mixture of religion and military attire to represent Joan. I researched French armor and found great appeal in the ornate designs which I will add later. Joan is a symbol of sainthood and self-sacrifice.

The flag pole is supporting her weight too. Though her pose is alittle too extreme, i don't find it impossible but i do feel that her left limb are bending too much.

Tim: I like what you've got, but see if you can extend it just a touch further down so you're not cutting off right at the knee.

wow some really great entries in this one...
Airborne: interesting idea, i can't wait to see how it turns out
Hawk: i love it already
dirkvandulmen: honestly, i liked you're first sketch better with the saints instead of angels, the cast shadow in front of her and it being on a battle field.
pixeltuner: she looks a little stiff, but can't wait to see more
daestwen: you're so good i just might hate you :P but it seems to me that her right hip would be jutting forward a bit more.
Baxter-E: love it
RichLyons: can't tell yet, but your sketch intrigues me... watch out for the uniform shape of her left arm
ikjhgfdsa: my only remarks are that i can't tell its a she... and for all that armor, she's in a very light pose... i don't know exactly how to say it the "weight" feels off
the Whistler: with the sword at that angle you might want to bring her left elbow up a bit in perspective
Wixxi: it looks as though she might fall backwards... watch her balance
hungryan: watch her hips, the don't seem to be at the right angle
i know i missed some of you, hope to catch on the next post...
and now for me, i usually keep to the "correct" time period, but thought it might be white noise in this go 'round, so i brought her into the current time.

Wow lots of great pieces already. This is my first chow. I was thinking how the heck can a 16 year old wear full plate armor, she must get exhausted. Feedback is always welcome.
I'll try to give some helpful feedback as well:
kisou: her armor looks a little too skinny for her calves.
Lt_Action: Very cool design. But her left shoulder doesn't seem attached to the same torso that her neck is attached to, I think it needs to be a little higher.
Amber Alexander: That's a good start, I think it would be stonger if you didn't hide her right hand behind her and instead had it resting on her hip.
dirkvandulmen: hawt!
Pixeltuner: I love her face! Her lower torso armor/clothing looks a little too skin tight, it needs some thickness.
daestwen: hawt, but I have to agree it looks a little "posed"
baxter: reminds me of this (http://www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/artn/ho_20.33.htm)
tim: love it
RichLyons: wow!
lkjhgfdsa: I love the armor, but her left leg looks much longer than her right.
Whistler: Great dynamic pose, but you might want to flip so she's right handed.. or not.
Iliada: I love the design of her hair, but its important to work out the basics of the whole figure before getting into any details. Try figuring out her armor and pose in a new picture and once you're happy with it, bring the face and hair in from the one you have.
GirlFlash: I don't know why there are purple jelly fish, but they are pretty cool.
KleeWyck: wow the armor looks pretty realistic to me, except I keep on seeing astronaut helmet instead of halo ^^;
hungryan: I like the colors.
Mephistoau: I love the pose and situation
Jadishe: I like her outfit, but the armor looks a little too skin tight
IIKII: I think the second pose is the most interesting. I think an angle from above or below would be really cool.
ianthegeek: wow.
SkooterNB: I'm confused with what is happening with the cross, is it under her skirt? I think her right shoulder needs to be more attached to her torso, right now she has no armpit.
Tok Love the outfit.
Arthemis IX: ooo looks very Final Fantasy
IceMoon: This somehow reminds me of Utena..
Wixxi: haha she's awesome and looks totally insane. I think her skirt could use a bit more detail, looks a little like a plain cylinder.
Void24 I like the contrast between her armor and the field, but I think her head is a tad too big.

Thanks for the crits guys!
maguinness - wow thanks! Can't believe I didn't see that myself!
konehita - been thinking of that myself too actually. It's really distracting this way, plus the sheath is on the wrong side of the body.
I'll fix these as soon as I get home from college in two days, and I'll crit a bit more when today is over :)
I just wanted to say, daestwen, her anatomy is awesome but something about the face is a bit weird, it's like her jaw is too jutting when compared to the forehead, and the hairline is too low on the forehead, might be just because it isn't colored yer, can't really tell right now...

Not sure which I'm going to go with. I'm leaning towards the little girl in the corner at the moment for several reasons 1. simpler 2. I'm having difficulty figuring out some compositional things in the other piece 3. I really kind of wanted to draw Joan as a little girl before she gave up little girl things
Eh. We'll see. Hopefully it will be done in watercolor. It's been AGES since I've done any watercolor and I rather miss it.
Going to try to make some helpful commenty stuff....yeah...try is the operative word here. ;)
KleeWyck I like the idea from your first post, but I'd flesh her out some and check her anatomy. It looks like some of the volumes are a bit odd. But I reckon that's a sketch thing more than a render issue. Can't wait to see it cleaned up.
Skooter Are you using photographic reference at all? Even if you take the pose yourself and snap a quick photo, I'd recommend finding some sort of visual reference for your piece. Also, I'd keep an eye on where that cross is going. At the moment between the costume and cross placement it look a bit...er...well potentially naughty in a very strange way. I guess the biggest suggestion I have is to really give the image some more thought and figure out a bit more what you're trying to attempt. Eg. time period, genre, etc. I think once you figure some of these things out and bring them into the piece, you'll be able to communicate what you're going for more easily. I'm not suggesting that you need to adhere to "conventions" of genre/time but keeping them in mind should at least help you find focus of your work so that it functions coherently. Good luck!
Lots of awesome stuff as usual from everyone! I always like watching pieces develop and change.

:punkgirl: Nice work everyone! I'm gonna try to give some useful crits:
Freddy Scribbles: Nice! Your style is refreshing, I'd love to see the final drawing.
darknight: Curious where it's heading, would love to see you sharpen it up!
Konehita:Nice scene, but think about the perspective of the environment, it feels a bit off.
maguinness: Like the style, are you going to add a background?
Void24: Nice colours. The proportions might be a little off, the head looks a bit too big maybe.
lkjhgfdsa: Like your interpretation! Maybe you can desaturate some of the armourparts? Because it's now bright everywhere, you don't really have a focus point.
dwinbotp: The face looks beautiful, can't wait to see the rest.
daestwen: Nice colours and the folds in the clothes look very good.
ianthegeek: Love the dynamic pose in your drawing. Her mouth seems to be a little too big maybe.
Girlflash: Pose is much better now!
Wixxi: Nice work, if you have time you can add detail to the floor, maybe add a stronger shadow.
dirkvandulmen: Nice composition, but Joan looks really like a man? Maybe add some female features?
Icemoon: Very nice armour! Maybe the proportions are a little bit off, the head seems a little bit small in comparison with her hips.
Baxter-E:Very nice and clean, and good colours. Try to make the metal really look like metal, stronger highlights maybe.

Sketches comped in PS. Just gotta transfer/clean up on proper paper and fiddle with a color palette. Most likely muted greys/greens paired with some stronger colors in her clothing.
Not sure if I'll keep the vague abstracty "angel" shapes in the BG yet. Will probably add that at the very end.

@ konehita - Thanks for the inbput!!
Figured i'd do a very quick update, and give some feeeeeedback.
Freddy - Interesting take on the theme man, looking forward to seeing more :D. Really liked that initial sketch where she was holding the teddy too
Rich - Looking sweet mate, fitting the sci fi imagery well
konehita - Liking the expression and posing so far. Maybe chuck down a grid to reference off for the perspective?
maguinness - Sick initial sketch :D I await with baited breath!
Void24 - That armour looks cool :) Grab some reference images for the proportions for the body, atm her torso is looking a little small in comparison with her legs, and because of that the head is looking a bit big. Keep going champ!
lkjhgfdsa - All i can say is that armour's design is crazy :D haha
dwinbotp - I'm really digging what you've done so far, just looking really crisp!
daestwen - Nice style! Can't wait to see how this one progresses
ianthegeek - Interesting pose! Maybe grab some ref for the face - just to tighten up what you've already got
dirkvandulmen - Haha sweet man, loving the look of it so far. Interesting background too!
IceMoon - ........... that looks wicked. That is all.
Arthemis IX - Looking awesome!! Must. Have. Final. NOW!!
Baxter-E - Really fitting style, i reckon the finished version will be really interesting. Reminds me of the kind of illustrations you'd get throughout the borders and stuff for old school books. Lookin good.
IIKII - That last pose is pretty spiffy. Which one are you gonna be working up?
Jadishe - That pencil work is awesome man, really looking forward to the final. The eyes are really powerful
Mephistoau - zomg that's me!
... and i'll stop there. Anyone i missed - just couldn't think of anything to say quickly sorry!
Anywho, the quick update - just refined the face a bit, wanted to make it a little more feminine. Really wanna put some more time into it, so i'll see how i go....

Apologies in advance to those I did not get.
Freddy Scribbles - I like the concept a lot. I couldn't tell those where angles at first though, just because it looked more like arms then wings.
RichLyons - Love the Sci-fi theme, colors look great, can't wait to see more.
konehita - I like that idea. She does look pretty tired.
maguinness - looks good, wanna see how this progresses.
Void24 - Like others have said the head looks a bit too big, but I would watch her legs and the way she's standing as well.
lkjhgfdsa - The armor is cool, but a few things I would watch out for would be the cloth on her right leg, her left hand looks off, a bit too thin, and her legs do look like their different lengths, but I'm not sure if that is a product of the cloth or the armor on her left leg
dwinbotp - I love the rendering on the face. You make me want to quit art and get a different job :p
daestwen - This piece screams for more energy but I don't think you need a whole lot more to bring it about. I think a bit of widening the legs, and bring the arms back could make for a cool turn-strike pose.
IceMoon - love the armor design.
Arthemis IX - love the armor and the simplistic background gives it a very classy feeling.
Baxter-E I like, very "stained glass"
GirlFlash - looking better, but her head seems small.
so here is my humble entry. I'm trying to design things a bit more, so lets see what happens. Halo and the flag need reworked a bit.

Trying to draw more humans so thought I'd have a go. heres a quick sketch of an idea, her left hand & sword need particular attention, didn't notice til I scanned! never drawn armour before - so much to learn so little time :p Still havent worked out the whole understanding light and colour thing yet so she is unlikely to be finished although I'll of course give it a go,

showing the whole figure seems to make the image less interesting (my first instinct was more of a portrait shot) maybe its just 'cause I was working on a small bit of paper. hmmm...

Iliada: Hey that is looking good as a start, i like the softness and subtle face. Also the hair i like, cool style.
For the further going, i'd suggest you blend out the costume to start with and maybe add some clouds or misty landscape in the background.
Try some colorshemes as well, to see what fits the start of this piece best before going into any surrounding details.
Maybe try some more decorations.
Also references are great for ideas and inspiration, like look up medieval landscapes, towns, woods, ...
I hope this helps you out a little and get you back in the tracks again :D

Need to give the actual character design some thought - have to turn it into a tall shot to show the rest of the body.
The idea is that Joan of Arc is in her final moments tied to the pole, uplit from the flames. The idea is that you (the viewer) are a young boy in the crowd of onlookers and she is very faintly smiling at you - as if to put you at ease.

here's another go. I'm shooting myself in the foot a bit because I flat out suck at environments(and weather, atmosphere, etc) and I have no idea how to draw armor. On the plus side I'm getting practice drawing environ and armor, which is great! I've been using a lot of reference and probably will be using more ^^;
Thank you Artemis and Mephistoau for pointing out my perspective. I have an attempt at a grid, but I'm wondering do you think I should make the hills closer to the horizon line?
Wiggers: I like how she's standing on something to make her stand out from the crowd, but it would help orient me if we could she what she is standing on (rock? pile of dead englishmen? soap box?)
Freddy Scribbles: what a doll!
Mephistoau:The nose seems a bit pinched or the mouth is a little wide, which can work, but right now she seems a tad too simian.
SkooterNB: First you need to plan a little more, decide is she outside or inside? is she in a corner of a prison? or someplace else? Right now the red background is confusing because it doesn't look like its outside, but the castle (which is too small to be a castle) indicates that she is outside. Also there are still some anatomy problems. For starters: her shoulders should be the same size, her head needs to cast a shadow on her shoulder, her neck is a bit short, and her foot is too small. Like others have said, reference would really help you out.
Artofinca: I like v2. Very saintly.
GirlFlash: I like how you're lighting her armor, but her right arm seems too long. How her skirt is flowing behind her isn't convincing either, the simplest thing would be to make it a bit shorter.
Joshaft: your armor has such wonderful volume!
meeatu: love the combat scenery!
Mara644: The strange armor is really interesting. Its a little hard to read that she's tied up, maybe more rope or chains around her chest/waist? Oh and I love how subtle the wings are!
Sulk-Sal: I envy your armor skillz
Atastrophea: hmm first bring her sword closer to her head and away from her left hand. That way you can draw the fingers of the left hand as they wrap around the hair without them getting cut off by a sword :) Also her ankles seem too skinny to me.
Iliada: hmm I find it a little strange that she's wearing green pajamas since that doesn't help me know that she's joan of arc. Try to think what kind of clothes a character like Joan of arc would wear.
hungryan:I really like where you're going, but I feel a little confused about the area where the legs meet the pelvis.
JaneM: anatomy looks great to me, color it :)
no_name_brand: someone has mecha skillz, I like the lower right because it looks more medieval and feminine to me.
davidmcleod: there is something wrong with her cheek/jaw use this for reference: http://www.posemaniacs.com/?p=21
agou:so much personality, love it!

Some progress... :) Because most of you've interpreted her as a warrior (which of course she was) I've tried to do her more feminine, what she might look like at home, a little sad (she probably lost a lot of her friends in the war). She's only a child after all.

Been awhile for comments, my turn, excuse the long list, i'll try to be concise:)
lkjhgfdsa, digging the sci-fi look, love the shapes you put in.
Iliada lovely style for the topic, hope to see more details soon.
Girlflash very dynamic pose you chose, i'm hoping you pull it off, the extra refs do make a difference!
Mara644 love the expression you put on her face, she looks fearless inspite of her being burnt at the stake and all.
t i m unique rendering style, I hope to see her face more blendedly rendered though.
Jadishe lovely pencil sketch!
ianthegeek lots of power coming from the pose and emotion from her face.
Baxter-E wonderful border, wanna see more.
Arthemis IX wind direction isn't bothering me much, i love the armor design, lovely!
dirkvandulmen i'm waiting to see more from this piece, looks epic!
Wixxi I'm hoping you can add more colors to your palette.
daestwen love the pose, anticipating more progress!
Void24 loving the muted pastel colors you used and the wings add a nice touch to your dainty piece!
maguiness curiously waiting to see how you handle your entry. i'd have a hard time if i had to use a gun instead of the usual sword for the topic, i'm really uncreative.
RichLyons another lovely sci-fi take on Joan, can't wait to see you slap on more stuff on her, looking great!
Freddy Scribbles interesting take and style. i want more!
SkooterNB I'm impressed that you're really doing all you can to improve on your stuff, having refs would be great and keep on practicing, you can only do better everytime:)
Artofinca love both poses really, looking forward to the finished look!
Wiggers loving the light source to bring her out from the bg. looking great man!
Sulk Sal It's wonderful to see how you've improved from the past few CHOWS. experiment more with other brushes and stuff until you find your niche, keep those hands busy and pencils sharp!
chirpingbee looks wicked, looking forward to see more!
HugeHarHar lovely pencilwork, do finish! very nice pose btw.
Joshaft i'm digging the cartoon stlye linework you have going! adding colors would be sweet!
hungryanlooking good so far, a bit wide eyed right now, i'm sure it only gets better!
no_name_brand wonderful concept! it sucks to have never thought about that kind of "suit". eagerly waiting to see more!
davidmcleod i'm liking the idea she's trying to calm some onlookers about her predicament, but the light source makes her look more intimidating and scary as opposed to the original idea you had. try making her eyes closed might help, just my 2 cents in:)
agou Great style! it makes me smile! more please!:D
konehita want to see more stuff added to better get a grasp of the Joan you're portraying, looking good so far.
kisoui like the white armor before but it's still a wip anyway, her feet are a bit inward right now, just something to look out for.
Molly looking great, more please.
klortho very interesting take, although she scares me a bit.
Arthur Two Sheds looking good man! love the underhanded blade!
The Whistler love the color choices on the green bg, loving the pose too, just finish it, haha!
Dan! love the textured armor! lovely colors too! more please!
IceMoonLove the armor design, i'm loving the looooong lance as well! or spear? bigger stick wins!
Rabies I don't see Joan in your piece, i love gore too but she's gotta be there!

Wow!! damn you guys are all so good :) next time I will have to take it up a notch:P
I have been spending too much time behind the computer lately, so I drew this straight on paper with ink and a 2B pencil... colouring on the computer though. Here's my stylised version of Joan of Arc. I added a map of france that comes bleeding out of the corpses head. And for the main colours I chose the red white and blue of the flag of france. Finished it all in one go
So keep up tha good work :)

Concept: In a pseudo-future Joan is the leader of an elite fighter squadron, "The Archangels". A genius strategist with god-like talent who became a commander at the mere age of 16.

Lalilulelo: Hey, looking good! Just thought I would warn you, but the red cross on white is the English Flag - no way she would wear the colours of her enemy! :P (I guess a future joan can get away with it though, i just thought it was funny!) Particularily, the white/red is the flag of St. George, so the catholics would avoid using it for her too. ;)

The cross with the circle around is a viking cross. The Circle symbolises the Norse mythology, since the vikings wasnt convinced christianity was the right thing, and didnt want to anger their old gods.

Take the comments with a grain of salt, I'm not good at giving feedback, but I'll try. Maybe I'll get better in time.
JaneM: She looks sad :o Bit flat at the moment, but with more values I'm sure it will turn out nicely! :)
KuGu: Make time for it, I think it'll turn out awesome
ianthegeek: great facial expression
Freddy Scribbles: That made me smile :) Lovely colours.
Ramza: That's sweet, love how dynamic it is so far. Looking forward to see it finished.
Lalilulelo: I was thinking England, and medic when I saw the red cross. Love the face and hair especially!
HAWK-: Cool concept, I'd go for the first one of those. I feel the other one has too much empty space.
sir Applejuicer: just by the face alone I could tell she was french. I think it's because last time I was in France I thought everyone had long noses O.O
rossipoo: pretty :) push the values in the skin :D the facial features seem a bit off though, I'd atleast move the eyes a bit closer to eachother (not more than a pixel per though at that size you posted) and maybe lower her left eye (though jawline tells me face is tilted)
Selkirk : Robot arm hooray! ;D
Lt_Action: I think the outline makes him look a bit pasted onto the background, maybe have a darker cast shadow near his feet would help though?
dwinbotp That's such a sweet face. I love the cold/warm contrast there :D Sweet as always!
Hideyoshi You make it look so easy. lovely texture and lines, impressive.
Now I must lay down a little
Been sick all day but now I just couldn't just lay down anymore, so started sketching some. Was reading Trevor's little tutorial in IFX so decided I'd try doing it mainly in gray scale first
Edit 1: gave up values only, I like working in colours :p
Edit 2: Ok maybe make in Joan of Arc instead of a character for lineage or whatever :P
Edit 3: More body armor, worked on background. desaturated a lot of it. Fixed the funny arm xD

OKAY EVERYONE READ THIS PLEASE AND RESPOND.
My week is looking really busy this week, so I'm shuffling some deadlines around a bit. Here's the choices:
Either, Joan of Arc ends on schedule, but there is no regular weekly chow for the following week (since Team Chow ends in the middle of the week).
Or, Joan of Arc gets an extra week,
Or, Joan of Arc gets two extra days and ends on wednesday, the Team Chow Deadline is pushed until Saturday, and the new chow goes up on sunday.
This last is what I'm leaning towards because it means I can space the work out and have it on days where I'm not working. The option I am *not* going to do is have Joan + Team Chow end on schedule and start the new round on normal schedule - It just isn't flexible enough for me to actually be able to handle it all this week. :P So choose from the three above please!

I vote: Joan of Arc gets two extra days and ends on Wednesday. This option will align the ChoW closest to it's original deadline. Certainly, we can all agree that no one wants a ChoW-less week.
Let me know what you decide on, either here or via PM.
PS - Technically, either means "one or the other of two", therefore it can only apply to two options. I hope this doesn't sound snobby.

rabies i know this brief hasnt been asked for a full on realistic interpretation, but i thought you may be interested, you've given the english soldier a union jack shield, the union jack is actually a pretty modern design supposedly to represent all the united kingdom countries, its more likely during such times the king george cross was the main english flag, and possibly even a totally different coat of arms was in use on the battle field.

Well, I'm GMT+1 and I usually end up posting to early even though I could've invested more time in the pic.
But I'm never sure whether the deadline has to do with admin's time zone or with the latest time zone or...
To be clear:
GMT -5 is my timezone, yes. This is the deadline.
Because I am a human being and I have to work and have other things to do in my life, often I let the deadline slip a few hours.
+ the poll usually takes me between half an hour to two hours to do, depending on the number of entries, so If I'm really busy my real-life work has to take precedence.
Usually if it's going to be a long delay, I will post here and let people know, but I don't always have the benefit of knowing in advance myself.
GMT -5 is Eastern time in the states, and the timezone for Ontario up here in Canada. so if you live in Asia/Europe/Africa/Australia/etc, as long as you have it up by about 10 pm your time, you should be safe. If you are in the States or Canada, you need to post before California and BC reach about 1 pm.
I will always post "No entries past this point, 15-30 minute grace period (# depending on entries", so you can always keep updating your post until you see this sign. I will not start saving entries until I put this sign up, so you are free to update until then. And if you were rushing to get in, see this sign up, just save and post otherwise you'll miss poll.
Hope this clears things up.

Back after a few days away, I'm very impressed with the entries this round! Thought I must have a go despite being most unlikely to finish.
Edit01: Thought I'd have a go at the slightly more dynamic one mainly for that reason! Don't like the colours yet though...
Edit02: Had a bit of time this afternoon. Bugger, I want to finish this now! :upset:

I really need a second opinion; I've been staring at it too long- do the proportions look right to you guys?

This Jeanne of mine never made it to Orleans... It was a great lesson for me at least... so there you go

Heliux: I think that the chest seems a bit crooked, and also her right forearm (viewer's left) is quite a bit longer than the opposing forearm. Other than that, really liking the pose. =) It's also helpful (if you're working in a program that will let you) to flip the canvas horizontally or vertically so that it's like you're looking at it in a mirror. Things will really pop out at you when you've been staring at something too long if you do this. Good luck!

Ramza - Good pose and sense of motion. Love the dark rawness.
2 Sheds - Beautiful. Love the clarity and warmth.
Worked on silhouettes/shadows, facial structure (thanks for feedback), and the costume. Still hope to do more - good luck everyone! Some inspiring work going on.

Looking great everyone. Unfortunately, I'm outta this one. I've got some serious deadlines for my schoolwork. Looking forward to the final vote, though...

fersteger, you won't be finishing? The stuff you have looks fantastic. :(
I have like, 60% of mine done, and will work without sleep till it's finished (or close enough anyways). Very cool round, the work so far is awesome.

good stuff folks!
i think i didnt manage to get my initial idea with the blood splattered english cross down too well, ended up looking just like, well a messy english cross...so i think i'll have to change that. i am okay with the rest i guess, but would love to hear what you guys think.
best!

This seems really fun. I'm very fond of drawing - or trying to draw ;-) - chars so maybe I'll join next week (depending on subject). Even if it ends up as "just" a sketch I guess I'll learn a lot from simply drawing (and maybe can get some feedback on anatomy etc.)
Impressed by the works in this thread. Well done by all participants! Bye for now :-)

Thx. I appreciate the clarification.
No more sleepless nights for me! :mod:
