ROUND #155 :: DRA'LLK, LESSER DEMON

DESCRIPTION

Dra'llk, Lesser Demon

Dra'llk is a lesser demon, in charge of many important and noble temptations. That's what he says.

In fact, his list of responsibilities includes:

1) Tempting people to play bejewelled or browse facebook on company time.
2) tempting people to steal grapes or small chocolate from grocery stores.
etc.

He has many other responsibilities, all along the same level. He is determined to succeed as well as can be possibly achieved in order to move up into the 'tempt people to cheat on their wives with the landlady' category of sin.

------------

ACCEPTANCE TO POLL WILL BE BASED ON THREE CRITERIA:

Dra'llk is a stubborn demon, who has drank so much his hand is formed into a never ending wine bottle, and the smoking made his hide not dissimilar to a sweet smoking jacket.

I decided to model him on the demons from the Marvel X-books crossover Inferno. I found a number of photos of a couple of those demons by the person who designed a Goblin Queen statue, here:http://www.flickr.com/photos/foenix/tags/goblinqueen/

Good luck to all.

The idea behind this demon being blue is that he is a lower class of demon. As he grows into a higher class demon, his skin color will change to a purplish hue, until he becomes the highest class, turning bright red in color. His body mass and horns will grow as he develops his demonic skills.

In his off-time, Dra'llk enjoys such hobbies as spreading malicious rumors about the sex lives of his fellow demons, and has lately been studying shapeshifting -- two forms he's developed seem particularly effective when tempting humans.

651340

Note on demon development: like angels earning their wings, demons have to earn their horns, so Dra'llks are still a bit nebulous in his native form.

My vote goes for RichLyons with a great concept, design, pose, expression and execution (everything you could want in a good character, really).

Rezeroth a close second; I love the face and the clothing, and the rendering style is really nice.

I have too agree with Chate. My vote goes too Rich for those very reasons.
Sadly mine is right next too his. He's making me look bad :)

For me, this has been the toughest ChoW in terms of voting so far. I limited myself to four which was rough with so many great entries:

Anthis-The anatomy of your character was really well executed. You've done some great storytelling with your image, and I liked the perspective that you chose. The coat was a really nice touch, too...it brings the demon down to our level and adds a sheen of seediness to the whole thing. Great work.

Tommoy--If I could only vote for one, it would be this one. Those nips are priceless. He's got a fabulous expression, and for me this one captures the brief perfectly.

Rezeroth--I thought your character had the most beautiful rendering of all the entries. It looks completely professional, and I love your palette and clothing design. I think the text holds this entry back quite a bit, though.

RichLyons--Fantastic entry. This image is full of life and humor and his body language couldn't be more clear. Great work.

Hi all. Nice round. Here are some comments on each entry, in the order they were posted.

Dwinbotp: Totally cheesy. (That's not a criticism.) The, um, tail is a nice touch. The body and face are well rendered. I think the hands could use some work. For the one holding the chocolate bottle it doesn't look like the lower finger could connect to the rest of the hand. The hand checking out his cushion could use more rendering since, as I've been told, after the gesture itself it's the hands and face that make an image look complete.

Darthmarsh: Great concept, and I really like the dialog box (I'm a UI designer). The demon itself has good volume and lighting, but the pose is stiff. The bend elbow should be further down, and I'm guessing you didn't use a reference, which would have helped. I could also see having gone much more cartoony. If parodying the paper clip and that dog you see, I think the parody would be even better if the drawing was in that same style.

Skooter: I'd say at this point to work on drawing the basic shapes and volumes (spheres, cones, cylinders, etc.) under different lighting conditions and then hit anatomy studies. What comes through well is his rebel, "fuck you" attitude.

SAmkaa: I like the expression, posture, and the rubbing of the hands. Style-wise I'm not sure what you're going for. It looks kind of flat, but you may have been going for that. There's better volume on the horns than on the face and torso. I should be able to tell the style you're aiming for from the drawing, though. Anatomy studies wouldn't hurt, but we're all in the process of doing those aren't we?

scottmcd: Like I said, we're all in the process of doing anatomy. I think I could have nailed the back on my demon better. I didn't have time to render enough to drop the lines, but it would have been a better image if I had. I don't like the interaction of the hoof and the shirt either. I kind of like the expression I got on the demon's face.

Alandriel: I like the pose and the expression. The horns seem just kind of stuck onto the head - I'd like to see more support structure in the skull for them. For the arms I'd follow the principle of having one of the major lines curved and the other straight - they seem stiff. I'm not sure if the perspective of the trash can matches that of the signs the demon is standing over. Good job on the pile of paper and getting the feel of a wire trash can.

dirkvandulmen: vote I'm impressed by the fact that despite all the detail going on the overall figure still reads well. I like how the lighting and area of high contrast brings the eye right to the face. I'm glad you lost the top hat from the WIPs. What I'm not sure about is how this guy fits the concept of minor temptation. So the vote here is mostly for the drawing and not so much for the concept.

RichLyons: vote The pony tail cracks me up. This guy is thoroughly repulsive for all the right reasons. The lighting is good and of course the gesture is great. I also like how the greatest level of detail and rendering is the face. This gets the vote for concept and gesture. I'd like to see it a little more finished in other areas, but that's personal preference.

Rodimus25: Changing the kid's expression to a slight grin was definitely a good choice. I like the wings on the demon, and the crown is cool but I don't quite get what it's trying to say. There's good volume on the demon, but not as much on the kid - must have been a time thing. For some reason, my eye is drawn first to the highlight on the kid's cheek and not to the demon. A little more of a shadow under the demon's near arm would help, I think.

Rezeroth: vote I like this guy's attitude, posture, and rendering. The back leg doesn't seem quite finished. I'd probably have upped the contrast on it a little bit while still trying to have it less than the front leg to preserve the atmospheric perspective. The concept of this as an ad only just now hit me as I'm typing this. The logo in the lower right is far enough away from everything else that I completely overlooked it. You might have moved the text up and enlarged the logo some, moving it in a little more. Finally, you should either drop the grey sketchy marks around the figure completely or play them up a little more. I'd vote for dropping them. Very nice job on this one.

courtyard: Icky demon and good concept. The feet and square legs are hilarious. You've also got a pretty good pose going for a blob. The Bulk aisle fits right in. I'm sure time was an issue, but I think it would have been a lot more convincing to have a variety of products in the aisle, including shelves and other things. I'm not sure I like the aisle actually receding to the vanishing point. It pulls the eye strongly to that spot, but there's nothing there to look at.

Sulk-Sal: I like the non-humanoid take on the demon. Those teeth look nasty, too. Overall the image doesn't read for me. I didn't realize that was a person in the middle until about the 3rd time I looked at the image. Greater contrast between the figure and the demon might have helped that.

MJ Alcazar: My initial thought is to either push the values to get more volume or to go for a flat look purposefully. This looks halfway between the two styles. I like the horn, eyebrows, and mohawk quite a lot. I get the sense that you didn't draw from reference, and I think that would have helped. Get a friend to take a picture of you in the pose and go from that.

luke464: "Moral Consultant" is great. The steam and rim lighting is nice. Is that a tail wrapping around his hip - it's not that clear but I'm afraid to look closer. ;) The pushed together flesh on the belly isn't convincing but is headed in the right direction. The area with the spiral should be more affected. Very nice job.

timothee[b/]: I like his expression. Good job on the hands. To get better volume use darker darks and brighter highlights. I like the pose from the WIP better than the final, though I think this is another case where you should get someone to take a picture of you to use as reference. Or maybe hunt through the stock photos on deviant art. I like the leg braces, but being metal they should have sharper highlights with more distinct edges.

[b]DigitalShade: I like the style and rendering on this - good volume and colors. I keep thinking that the chocolate bar should be melting, which means good job on the fire. Personally, I'd have made the tail more curved. I get the chocolate aspect but think there could have been more having to do with the minor temptation aspect of the brief. Really strong drawing, though.

Jussslic: The shirt makes me smile, along with the goofy expression. There's a stronger sense of volume on the body than on the head. My main comment, though, is that he's just standing there. Start with a good gesture - the pose and position. It communicates even more than the face, and in this case there's very little sense of character in the pose.

Tommoy: Strong pose, expression and posture, and a nice drawing. Not my favorite style, but that's just personal preference. The only real critique I can think of is that I don't see the minor temptation aspect of the brief. That and the area of highest contrast for me is between his belly and crotch, so that's where my eye goes first. Yes, I'm going to blame that on contrast on not on my own mind.

Kelly X: Great action pose and hilarious expression on his face. I'm sure you could have used more time to finish this out, but degree of finishing on his face draws us right in there. Not sure how the weapons and dynamite-sausage fit in with the brief. I like the seams on the pants - they're quick lines but define volume and movement very well.

masque: I like the idea of earning ones horns. The two shapeshifted forms do a good job of showing people who think they ought to be attractive but aren't. These drawings also strike me as good examples of concept art that you'd show a client at early stages of a design project. The demon's left hand could use some more work.

Shehaub: Good expression and just enough background to show scale and setting. Ironically, the crisp clear font and image on the screen take away from the lack of crisp clear lines elsewhere in the drawing, like the base of the monitor. The pose is OK, but I think it would be more exaggerated. I think you could have gotten better volume with darker shadows and brighter highlights, particularly around the face and head.

Garth Cochrane: Great concept and character. My comments mainly would center around anatomy and reference. My impression is that you've studied muscle placement and structure but haven't had much practice seeing how they look in different angles and postures. Steady life drawing is great for that. I find the wide neck distracting. I love the way he's got his hand on the kid's head, and the kid's expression is awesome. The fabric folds are very nice, especially on the kid.

Ostrander: Wow, an icky little imp. I like the gender ambiguity, expression ,and posture on the demon. The woman, oddly, seems stiff even though we can't see much of her pose. I like the color and texture of the demon's wings. Good work on the woman's hair, particularly back down by the neck. I'm not sure, but I'd think about darkening the side of her face a little more.

ianthegeek: Another nasty looking dude. The horns don't work for me - there should be more of a support structure on the skull. Otherwise the anatomy looks good to me. How is the tie attached? It doesn't loop around the neck. There's a tangent with the pen and the tie, also. Nice work on the eyes. The pose seems a little static to me, but I'm not sure how I'd fix it.

Anthis: This is may favorite gesture and pose of all of them. The boy doesn't work for me - mainly his face and expression. It's more flat that the rest of the drawing, and the head seems too big for the body. Great coat on the demon. I like how even the tail is wrapping around the boy. The image shows up a little too dark on my monitor. Oh, and good camera angle on the demon - that's tough.

Kedrew: I think reference would help this one, but overall I think it's on the right track - just not finished. The skull needs to extend further in the back and have a little bit visible just behind the ear. I'm not sure what's going on with the mouth and teeth - I'd clarify that. I like the suspenders.

Thanks scottmcd! Hopefully the demon himself got though, and hopefully this kind of style works better then the one in my previous ChoWs.

The ones I voted for are:

RichLyons - This is such a great piece. The clothing, the expression, the lighting, pose, quite excellent.

dirkvandulmen - The detail and the lighting are great.

Rezeroth - very nice work, I think what I enjoy most about this is the pose with that smile.

Thanks for the comments. All valid. I'll intend too address some of them in the next CHOW I get a chance too do. Hopefully Joan of Arc. Not sure how I'll address the horn Issue with that one though :)

Keep em coming people. I'm hungry for criticism.

I only voted once because I was not aware that I could vote for more than one. I will pick my favorite 3 next time :)

The ones that got my vote were those I thought were most effective in accordance with the brief and design of the character were:

RichLyons: Great interpretation! I love his pose and expression, he exudes character. The office setting makes me picture him as a sales man which would be very fitting. I can just imagine him saying 'Heyyyy' from your piece :D

Dwinbotp: Awesome, I love the cheesy comedy take on the demon (nice touch with the tail :P)! It's cheeky and fun. I think the whole design is great as well as the fitting background and the extra touches like the chocolate sauce and speech.

Rezeroth: Really like the colours and style of this one. I think the simple background sets him off well too. The overall look of it reminds me of an advertising poster, one of the big ones you see on the side of buildings etc. tempting you to buy things.

Other favourites of mine were Tommoy's and dirkvandulmen's, both of which were fantastic designs but I just didn't feel they were the most fitting for the character.

Great work all! :)
